Ranking Every Star Wars Movie: What is Your Opinion? 

Middle-aged bloke here too. The best thing about the sequels is that it really makes you appreciate the story of prequels if not their execution.

I just saw The Phantom Menace at cinema yesterday during its 25th anniversary and i was 6 years old when that film came out and it was my introduction the franchise what made me a fan and watched all the other films ever since.

I was a HUGE Star Wars fan as I kid, as I can still remember getting to stay home from school during my 6th grade graduation practice to see Jedi in 83. Sadly, it's been all down hill ever since, as I couldn't stand the prequel trilogy, and I didn't even bother to watch episode 9 from Disney, as episode 8 killed what was left of the series. Lucas made the franchise "sick" with the 1, 2 and 3, along with all the useless additions and changes he made to 4, 5 and 6(I can no longer watch those, got the unchanged versions off the net, and I'm all good). And Disney came in and killed off what little interest was remaining for me(Rogue One was solid), but for those still in to the franchise, it's all good. My rather short rating list is: 1. Empire Strikes Back 2. New Hope 3. Return of the Jedi 4. Rogue One I wish I could "unsee" all the movies not rated, but sadly that isn't my reality, but I still recognize the OG trilogy and am happy to Wsh EVERYONE a Happy May 4th, if for no other reason than so many great memories.

I was 11 in 1977 so of course A New Hope is my favorite. It was only called Star Wars back then. Phantom Menace wasn't all that bad and I think the pod race and Ray Park carried it for the most part. These are also the only two Star Wars movies I've seen in a theater. I do own most of the movies on the various media forms they were released on over the years. I was a bigger fan of the expanded universe novels and still think the franchise would have done better making movies out of them.

Hi John I live in Scotland got to play your game on my evercade through the game of the month and I loved it. It's such a great concept You really should look at a doing a sequel and expanding on it and making it tougher.

Ok, now John, this may turn into a book, I apologize. So, a little bit on me, I’m 40, and really got introduced to the trilogy in 95-96 when my older brother bought the trilogy from Columbia House (remember that?!) just in time for the ‘97 rereleases. I’ll also say, I was content with three movies. Here we go A New Hope, I rank 3rd, great start to a franchise, but like most intros to big franchises, needs to be slow to set up the lore. Still great revisions give it a great coat of paint, but the original effects were cutting edge Empire Strikes Back, of course is 1st place. The only thing I can say the Special Edition in ‘04 did fix the “monkey-lady emperor” Return of the Jedi, 2nd place. This and A New Hope were neck and neck, but the conclusion here was grander, I feel the Special Edition didn’t help this any, the musical number was dumb. Either cut the idea of Ewoks getting the best of an army, was geared towards kids. Still great, didn’t care for the Hayden shot, I could do without that Prequels now Phantom Menace: setting up this timeline meant a lot of trade and taxes…(Y’know what I mean?) however, action scenes were super (best Light sabre battle in the saga) and that Damn Jar Jar. But it’s not the worst I put it no. 7 Attack of the Clones. The most boring of the prequels, lovey dovey crap. No. 9 Revenge of the Sith. Easy 4th place. By far the best of the Prequels. The duel was awesome, but again Episode 1 did do that better. Sequel trilogy now Force Awakens. Was awesome! I put it 6th. Better than Episodes 1 and 2 for sure Last Jedi. 11th. Oh buddy, the force “gets stupid” here. Rise of Skwalker: 10th, better but not by much Side stories now Rogue One: easily the best Disney Star Wars movie. Cool idea, the “many Rebels died retrieving this information” was a great movie. And does something different, 5th place Solo: it was fine, I enjoyed it more than some, didn’t need it (I wanted an Obi-Wan movie, we got the mini series) 8th place

All the latest trilogy should be at F below all the prequels at D, apart from that good list!

We were all spoiled by the Empire Strikes Back being so amazing and timeless that it set up unreachable expectations for the rest of the series. I would say The Rise of Skywalker took more heat than it deserved because of The Last Jedi. And it's great to see some love for Rogue One, the most underrated film of the series.

Loved the video, John! What a great idea! You'll laugh but my wife and I got married on May 4th, 2013 and even though I'm a Star Wars fan, I didn't even know that day was Star Wars Day until after the fact! Sad, huh? In any case, I'm close to your age and my list would likely be very similar to yours. Empire is my favorite Star Wars film as well and the original trilogy for me was by far the best trilogy. However, I actually have grown to enjoy the Prequel trilogy much more over the years and Revenge of the Sith in particular is a real dark horse. It could very well be my 3rd favorite film in the series after Empire and A New Hope. Rogue One was the biggest surprise on your list because for me, I honestly found it to be good but pretty forgettable. The ending was AWESOME though...I'll give you that! ;) In any case, thanks for doing this video, John. I'd love to see more videos like this one! Perhaps the Indiana Jones trilogy or even a fun iconic 80's movie list or something like that?

Oh, my. I'm a Gen X'er too, and I rank them as follows: Against all other movies, ALL of them are S-Rank. I love them! Amongst themselves, S Tier: The Phantom Menace, Return of the Jedi, Rise of Skywalker A Tier: A New Hope, Revenge of the Sith, The Force Awakens, Rogue One, Solo, B Tier: Empire Strikes Back, Attack of the Clones, The Last Jedi That is to say that they are ALL great, and even the worst ones are a lot of fun. I can't even give them less than a B, and even that's a stretch. I will never get the hate for the Prequels, or the Sequels, or any of them really. They all worked for me, and I'm old enough to remember it back in the day. Don't assume that my age will dictate my tastes.

Solid list John. However, I personally love return of the Jedi. For me, that's S Tier with Rogue One. But you can't go wrong watching the original trilogy or Rogue One.

Episodes IV and V, S-tier all day long. VI is Lucas being a control freak, cutting financial corners, and puppeteering an inexperienced TV commecial director to film a two-hour toy ad. III is just about tolerable (although waaaay too long), I and II can get in the sea, and the sequel trilogy fell right off a cliff after VII. Rogue One is bloody awesome, though. :D

Hello John, I'm 51 years old and like you I watched Empire Strike Backs and A New Hope in cinemas here in Brazil. I'm impressed that your opinions are exactly the same as mine and I would have given all the films the same grades, including the S for Rogue One and Empire Strikes Back. By the way, I really enjoyed this video, a little different than usual, do more!

Here is my list from favorites to worse, and this is my opinion, and thank you for the sharing as well... Best to Worst... 1) Return of the Jedi Tie for Second and Third because I could flip flop either way.... 2) A New Hope 3) Force Awakens Tied for Fourth and Fifth for me 4) Attack of the Clones 5) Empire Strikes Back 6) Revenge of the Sith 7) Solo Story 8) Rogue One 9) Rise of Skywalker Tied for Last Place 10) The Phantom Menace 11) Last Jedi It is hard to remember all these titles and why I liked them or dislike them when I have to do it from memory...

I feel your force John. Rouge One is an Ausome film that looks, feels and sounds like Star Wars unlike the prequels which I just. Can't bring me self to watch ever again . For me Rouge One is where Star Wars begins and It flows beautifully into a new hope.

I have (or had) a very similar Star Wars T-shirt. As for the movies, the original trilogy (whether the original version or Special Edition) are the best of the franchise--though I haven't seen ROGUE ONE or SOLO yet.

Say what you will about The Last Jedi, that scene with Luke and Yoda is one of the best in the franchise.

As we're on age, im 44. I've always been a fan of The Phantom Menace! It would be a B for me. I'd probably go S - Empire A - Return of the Jedi, Sith, Force, Star Wars B - Solo, Phantom, Rise of Skywalker C - Clones, Last Jedi D - Rogue one (man its dull)

I love Star Wars video games but watched the orignal 3 films when I was a kid because the films where really popular and I was excited to see them and I thought they were horrible. I actally thought the prequals to be a bit better though still nothing specail. I havn't watched any of the newer films. I might watch rouge one though since your not the first person i have seen praise that film so highly.

Not a bad list, very close to mine: The Great (in order best to worst) Empire Rogue One Star Wars Return of the Jedi (still a lot more good than bad, but you can tell George was starting to care more about the merchandising than the film making) Solid to Mediocre The Force Awakens The Last Jedi (Gets a ton of hate, much of it earned, but there is also a lot to like. Luke’s redemption, Kylo and Ray’s relationship development, Yoda’s lesson, Holdo Maneuver, and it is the only movie in the saga to actually demonstrate “from a certain point of view.”) Revenge of the Sith (Mostly bad, but the opening space battle was damn good, and the closing duel was visually stunning, but technically weak, also order 66 is the best sequence of the prequels). Solo Bad, just bad, the order does not matter Phantom Menace Attack of the Clones The Clone Wars Movie Rise of Skywalker (they should have never listened to the fans. People hated Empire too, but they stuck to their guns, and stuck the landing).

Force Awakens,I didn't think too much on at the time,now it stinks. A New Hope was just excellent if not perfect next to Return of the Jedi for obvious reasons. 🌟

I actually thought Rogue One was the best of the newer Star Wars movies, as well, and I really like the original trilogy a lot. I haven't seen the prequels since they came out in theaters so no comment there. Maybe I should watch those again. As for Episode VII-IX, I'm not really a fan. There is some entertainment there but I'm not a fan of what was done with Luke Skywalker, and he, Han and Leia just seemed to be phoning it in the whole time there were on screen. Also, the whole "I'm all of the Sith/I'm all of the Jedi" thing in Episode IX might be some of the dumbest dialogue in any movie I've ever seen, even dumber than the whole sand thing in Attack of the Clones. What do you think of the Ewok TV movies (Caravan of Courage/Battle for Endor)? I vaguely remember those from when I was a kid.

Bringing back the Emperor was dumb? Have you read the books? The Emperor that died on 6 was a clone not the real one. And the real beginning of 7 is the beginning of The Book Of Boba Fett. But Disney has messed up everything with the movies and tv series. I'm more of a horror fan I'm not too much into sci-fi except Star Wars and Star Trek. For me: I - B, II - D, III - S, IV - A, V - S, VI - A, VII - B, VIII - B, IX - C, RO - S, Solo - B. I was less harsh on the sequel trilogy than most. For me, II is easily the worst of the movies. I blame the bad acting in the prequels on George Lucas being a bad director rather than the actors and there is some bad dialog for sure, but that's also on George Lucas who had nobody to treat the scripts. It was in the early days of full green screen sets which made it hard too. The problems with the sequels I blame more on Kathleen Kennedy's horrid leadership. The sequels are good on their own, but are a masterclass in missed opportunity. I hate holding that against the sequels though because that's just head canon. Fair ranking by John though.

I generally agree with these rankings, though I’m a bit more forgiving to the first two prequels. I think they’re excellent at world building, Tatooine in Ep1 feels a lot like Star Wars to me. Otherwise I take much more umbrage with Rise of Skywalker than TLJ, because the whole film is a train wreck. TLJ at least feels competent on its own. I have to try very hard to ignore this film in order to enjoy the ending of the original trilogy. Otherwise it’s preposterous to think the emperor outlives Luke. Just not for me.

As someone that's a big science fiction and fantasy fan who's a little younger than John, I love "A New Hope," I think that "Rogue One" was solid but not spectacular, and I thought that the original trilogy of "Thrawn" novels by Timothy Zahn were decent. Over the years, having read a lot of other science fiction and fantasy as well as watching other films, the rest of the "Star Wars" franchise just doesn't interest me. I love that it's inspired a lot of others to sit down and write their own science fiction and fantasy, but when watching the other "Star Wars" films, it just feels to me like they're trying to take me to the same place that "A New Hope" did, and it just doesn't work. I realize that's a little harsh, but it's just how I feel about "Star Wars" at this point.

My opinion on the star wars saga is almost exactly the same, with empire strikes back being the best. However I did not like rogue one or solo. The characters in rogue one were not memorable , I couldn't even remember their names at the end of the movie.

Empire is my favorite, then Star Wars, then Return of the Jedi. Episode 1 was kind of ok. 7 was actually pretty good. The rest, I don't care enough about to order them. **edit** Haven't seen the Rogue Squadron movie, and the trailers for the Han Solo movie just looked awful.

I'm a couple of years older than you. I saw the original Star Wars in the theatre, but I was too young to remember it. My mother says that I cried because of the scary monsters and explosions. My ranking is pretty similar to yours: Star Wars: B - I used to love it, but I find it hard to watch now. Empire: S - Absolutely fantastic, despite the scruffy looking nerf-herder dialog. Return of the Jedi: A - The Ewoks pander the kids too much, but lots of good scenes. Phantom Menace: D - Not much good here. Attack of the Clones: D - Dreadful dialog, boring story. My memory is a bit fuzzy because I couldn't be bothered to ever watch it again. Revenge of the Sith: C - Some payoff, but still not very good. Have also only seen this once. Force Awakens: C - Terribly generic, only saw it once. Last Jedi: F - Made me never want to watch another Star Wars movie. Rise of Skywalker: ? - Didn't watch it. Rogue One: A - Reminds me of a great WW2 movie, like the Guns of Navarone. Solo: ? - Didn't watch it.

I havent seen the last Jedi because the first two Disney movies in the series were trash i already knew it was going to be terrible. The Disney sequels make you really appreciate the prequels.

I honestly like all the movies with the exception of Rise of Skywalker. That one is a real mess.

My 3 favorite Star Wars movies are: 1 The Empire Strikes Back, 2 Revenge of the Sith and 3 The Force Awakens. The worst was Solo, although i didn't really like The Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker either.

The prequels were great stories told poorly. The sequels were awful stories told really well. At the end of the day, I’d have to take the former over the latter because that’s what sticks with a world and franchise like that.

episode 1 high for me bcouse lightsaber battle better than episdoe 3 and maul is enemy.also have space battles with new ship n1. episdoe 3 space battle on start was huge disapponted its like trailer battle short. bcouse of end battle roque one high too . force awakens good but endin need more death star like battle which kinda we get on last jedi and rise of waleker battles but movies other part suck. solo attack and clones worst for me. roque one ı put under new hope. roj and empire kinda equal but bcouse of endor ewoks empire alone on top. jar jar was bad yes but it not involve destiny of movie or battle so much but ewoks they basicly change everything. you can remove jar jar and episode 1 become same beter movie buy you cant remove ewoks from roj. empire not have grand space battle but its have great space actions longer than episode 3 space battles. space battles important for me bcouse we called star wars not groundwars. bcouse of that ı give some credits for episode 1 end battle and last jedi start battle. the biggest probelm of rise of skywalker battle should be in space not exogol in planet. episode 3 bcouse of dark tone it can be best movie after empire similar dark vibe but staying anakin until end of movie bascily blue lightsaber fights failed for me. somethnig like roque one end can be done in episdoe 3 second half. the clone wars should be end in episode 2 end. kylo ren kinda miss used too. we didnt see jedi temple descrution and kylo ren knights. too much focuse on rey. luke ı dont mind too much it was clear to luke not gonna stay same luke . they can use dark emipre comic book with dark luke and young emporer return with acutal sith fleet not copy paste 100 star destroyers.

Wow, you rank Rogue One an S? I know a lot of people like it, but I really might have to give it a watch. I'll never see Solo though. The actor for Han just does not sell it for me at all, and like I said in another comment, the trailers just really looked awful.

For me, after George Lucas Firesale to Disney, the Star Wars-Franchise died☠️ Rogue One was not so bad (hoped for Rogue Squadron) but in Line with all the horrible Series (incl. boring Andor) there is nothing for me to wait for.

The Original Trilogy is TIMELESS. The Prequel Trilogy is GREAT. The Modern Disney Trilogy does NOT EXIST to me. Rogue One is FANTASTIC. Solo is a FUN movie. 😎👍

I'm gonna buck the trend and say that everyone orders the prequels backwards. Revenge of the Sith is the worst. The first of the prequels is the best. Yes kid Vader was annoying, but teenage lovestory Vader was worse. The pod races are infinitely better action scenes than the nonsense where they free fall in space missing all the flying cars for 5 minutes in the AOTC. The lightsaber fight with Darth Maul and the two sided light saber is better than the final fight in ROTS.

The Last Jedi would be an F minus x4 for me. Terrible movie! As a kid that loved Luke Skywalker growing up, what they did to his character was awful.

The Last Jedi killed Star Wars.

The Prequels had good moments but weren't great. They would probably get a B or C, even a D maybe. But the 3 latest ones, oh god. I cannot stand them. #7 was really bad but I held out for the next one because Luke was in it. I went and seen #8 for free at the museum I worked at. I nearly walked out halfway through the movie. It was absolute trash. #7 and #8 get a D- and an F- for me. And I've actually never seen the third one and have no interest in seeing it. Absolutely unstomachable.

Giving Last Jedi a higher grade than TPM and AOTC is a crime. The Last Jedi absolutely ruined the fanbase and lore. It has to be an F

age 40 4, 5, 6 = good (not great, especially when compared to something like dune or on a sliver globe) 1, 2, 3 = objectively bad but at least in line with the original trilogy. 7 = inoffensive soft reboot. potential for good things 8 = absolute dog shit. ruined everything star wars related. 9 = cant salvage the shitshow that rian created. better than 8 but still sucked every other new star wars related media = fuck you disney

I love The Last Jedi. I consider it to be a truly beautiful film, and a brilliant deconstruction of what makes Star Wars what it is. Rogue One, however, I don't love. While the spectacle is some of the best in the franchise, the story and characters are quite bland, in my opinion. Not a bad movie, but not my favorite. But at the end of the day, I just plain love Star Wars, and there isn't a Star Wars movie that I don't enjoy.

Star Wars = S Empire = A Jedi = A- due to stupid ewoks and rehash of same death star threat. These are the original theatrical releases, not the garbage ones that we were released as the special editions in the 90s and then overwrote the originals. Phantom Menace = F for the stupid little kid and jar jar binks. Clones = F for the cringe love story and no real protagonist. Sith = F for the stupid long ending fight scene and lame story. Episode 7 whatever it is called = F due to Mary Sue character who never struggles and is just amazing at everything. Last Jedi = F- for obvious reasons. I never watched one after that. And never will.
