There’s an Aussie show called “every family has a secret.” They have mostly non celeb people with interesting family. Here in Australia we mostly get who do you think you are mostly British and Australian versions. Occasionally we get the US version. We also get finding your roots and long lost family. Thank goodness for SBS, cable tv (Foxtel) and the occasional RU-vid.

Both Jack Thompson and Ron Barassi’s story are similar. Jack lost his mum as a toddler and the Thompsons took him in. Ron was 5 when his father was killed at Tobruk. Ron’s story is still very emotional to watch every time you watch it. Both admired Jack (an actor) and Ron (a former Aussie rules footballer and then coach). Sadly Ron passed away last year.

There was a New Zealand show a few years back, that used DNA to make surprise discoveries in people's lives, and said people had to go on a journey to find out what it all meant. Just can't recall the name of it. I'd put it in C-tier at best, from memory.

My favorite show so far is who do you think you are. However the one called genetic detectives sounds quite interesting. I'm going to give it a try.

I’m a total geek for all the shows, but I think they can have an “NCIS” effect. Science based cop shows have had the effect of making people believe that DNA and science can solve all crimes in a few days. I hate when people spit in a tube and join a large public network, and then are disappointed when they don’t have their book of life laid in front of them. To me that totally misses the point of genealogy. It’s the process and the history of the specific areas that’s fun for me.

Bloodline Detectives with Nancy Grace was the 'missing link' between what I've read but never had the chance to see of CeCe Moore's show, and then Forensic Files, First 48, and Dateline. It was good but tended formulaic, for the 4-6 episodes I saw. The latter shows were more varied, engaging, and the next step better produced or two, although not immune to what I said either. I believe CeCe Moore guest-appeared on an episode, or was cited there perhaps. I'd look forward to compatibly parallel approaches being presented, in additional seasons, if such a thing could exist. Caveats as I say, like those to the Nancy Grace show, above. She was not always my cup of tea, but I transcended it well, when I caught some of her show episodes.
