Ranking High Schoolers by GPA | Assumptions vs Actual 

GPA in high school really isn’t about how smart you are it’s sorta like how much effort you put in to your education

Literally every single one of these kids have sweet/approachable personalities. Also, group ranking is actually 100% right for once!!!

I don’t think we talk enough about how tremendously quarantine has effected students today. It seems to be such a recurring theme of people losing their motivation and dealing with so much burn out.

They literally needed to be intelligent intellectually, emotionally and socially to rank accurately; they were all lovely

Once you leave high-school you reevaluate what being smart actually means. It really doesn’t equate to how well you do in school.

I understand what Jasmine was saying about stereotypes, but I think they moved her up because NHS has a (fairly high) minimum GPA requirement.

If these kids represent our future, I have high hopes for it. The humanity in these kids was refreshing. Loved it.

I would love to see a 5 or 10 year follow up with the same people and see where they are in life. As a high schooler, I always wanted to learn business (like Daniela) but parents pressured me to learn things like AP Latin. 😕

I knew people in high school with over a 5.1 GPA and it still boggles me today how it is even possible. It made me think mine (while perfectly fine) was horrible. Looking back on it now, it was incredibly damaging to my self-worth! I'm really glad to see these kids understand that GPA doesn't define your work ethic.

The idea that people can get a 5.0 is just bonkers to me. At my school, you could only start taking AP classes Junior year and Sophomore year if you had special recommendations. So, the max you could typically get until Junior year was a 4.0. It was nearly impossible to get a cumulative GPA higher than a 4.5 and 5.0 was completely impossible.

Glad that these Gen Z kids are so aware and not brainwashed by the current academic system.

It was sooo refreshing to see people being understanding. These past two years, I've burnt out terribly and I've struggled my physical/mental health after having a perfect GPA in school for years. It's just nice to know that I'm not alone. :)

I was one of the careless kids in school and still got a 3.5 now that I look back I regret not getting involved in clubs and such not that gpa really matters in the real world but getting involved in stuff and taking initiative at a young age definitely helps when you get older trust me

They were all so extremely cute in everything but I loved David especially. He seemed kinda confident and let himself get pushed upwards but also didn't say much at all and just spread his wholesomeness. It seems like he's emotionally and socially very intelligent.

I just want to say, as a person with usually top rang and high grades, the years spent in quarantine have really affected my grades and overall studies. I feel like a lot of people have faced this and I truly sympathize with them.

I got better grades being at home than I ever did in school, went from F’s and D’s to Honor roll. I could just turn down the volume on the teacher and actually think for once. Graduated with the best grades I’ve ever gotten

the fact that they got the order 100% correct shows that these kids are really smart, even if some have a low gpa 😂

My valedictorian had a 4.96 GPA with a perfect sat and act score, most of the “athletic” group didn’t know who they were when they were announced

I knew some of the AP were going to have a lower GPA. Testing can negatively impact AP students as well. I had a higher GPA than some of my classmates without taking any AP classes. It happens.

The GPA is a symbol of dedication, not necessary “smartness” level. I graduated last spring with a 4.0. While it sounds impressive to some, to me the GPA was all I felt validated by. I didn’t have any friends, I put everything into school. I definitely don’t consider myself massively intelligent, but I am motivated. And the people with the most motivation get the farthest in life. They can take negative experiences and make something beautiful out of it. Intelligence only goes so far without motivation. Edit: after reading some of the comments, I’d maybe say motivation AND hard work. They go hand in hand.

i felt what david said, i was a student that ofc cared about my grades but when i decided to not focus too much on class rank and gpa i actually shot all the way up from rank 26 to rank 4 with a 4.9 gpa. just have fun and take classes you WANT to take and not what'll boost ur gpa

Aww Jaelle. This reminds me of myself except I graduated before quarantine and I realized how much I actually missed out on. They all seem like such amazing students/alumni. I wish the best for them all.

I’m a senior in college right now. Graduated high school in 2018. I had a 4.6 GPA weighted (3.8 unweighted), top 10% of my class, and decent test scores (1270 on the SAT, 26 on the ACT. Not as high as I wanted at first). Involved in extracurricular activities and AP/dual credit classes which got me some scholarships for university. Ended up going to the university in my town that has a huge acceptance rate (like 90), very affordable school, and a great nursing program. Got early acceptance to nursing school and will graduate debt free with a 3.6 GPA. I’m a commuter student too, which many people kind of looked down on. People used to ask me why I didn’t aim higher and choose the “college experience” somewhere more competitive. Sometimes it’s not all about that. As a first generation student, I just thrived off academic validation. I had a great high school experience, but just because I’m book smart doesn’t mean I’m smart! The education system is designed in a way that many people may not thrive in. People also have hard life experiences or responsibilities going on outside of school. At the end of the day, this stuff is kind of arbitrary. It was important to me at the time, but it’s not everything! There’s more important stuff. Plus my school district doesn’t have the greatest point system. My school had like 14 valedictorians my year and like 5 salutatorians just because they went off gpa. That’s when I realized it’s all kind of meaningless 😂 ooh also my friend is insanely smart. She got a 96 on the ASVAB and a 34 on the ACT. She dropped out of college because lectures are hard for her. Doesn’t mean anything bad!

It seems like a serious oversight to not have accounted for GPA calculation differences. 4.6 is only possible on a 5.0 scale...

I had a 4.0 GPA in high school, but in college my GPA was more like 2.7. People talk about effort a lot when it comes to grades, but honestly I think everyone has a limit. Some people can push themselves to their limits and still not get a 4.0 GPA, but it doesn't mean you've put in any less work. At the end of the day, tests are designed so that only a certain number of people get a certain grade. I believe as long as you've tried your best, you'll have nothing to regret.

Im from Wisconsin and my school didn't weight our GPA's from AP classes so actually most of the kids in the AP classes had worse GPAs than all the people who breezed by taking the regular classes.

A students GPA also has a lot to do with how the school calculates it!

When Jaelle said that she suffered from chronic illness and it could be hard to judge intelligence and school grades based on that I understood completely. I have the same issue and it was hard missing like a month of school or a couple weeks every so often and then coming back and being dropped in the middle of everything. A lot of the times I was confused for the math classes but everything else I did well in. A lot of people were surprised when I would come back and ace my exams having been there so little and still keeping up with them or getting better sometimes. However, it’s not to say that my gpa didn’t still suffer because of it. It was a lot😩

They are all smart and have great intuition and they pay attention to details and what others say, wish them all success!

It’s much more than gpa, APs , honors. There are also mitigating factors such as technology access, family surroundings, iep/504 status, internet access, food security, vocational training. I’m a student with a disability (autism spectrum disorder)- I’m about to graduate a distance learning program in June of this year. My classes are 100 percent online with class once a week in the evenings. My grade is currently a b average. In fall I’ll be transfer over to a community college. The founder of the college internship programs - transition programs started out at community college and ended up getting his doctorate degree. The college internship programs are one of the top transition programs for hfa adults

High school is really about how well you play the game. I was never more than in the top 40% of my class but now I’m a doctoral student at Johns Hopkins. College was where I really found my passion for medicine and dove into it.

jubilee, next time when you do a video like this, use unweighted gpas! weighted gpas vary a lot by the school grading scale and the availability of ap classes. unless these kids all go to the same school, it's not a fair comparison.

I graduated high school with a 4.83 GPA and it stressed me out sooo much. Don’t stress like I did. Your grades do not define you nor what you’re going to do with your life.

I’m curios how you can have a 2.0 and be in four AP classes. Most schools need a higher GPA (like a 3.5) to be placed into them. Although, I know online learning has messed things up a lot. I’d love to know more about Joon’s backstory.

It is hard to compare GPAs across schools though. At my school the top GPA is 5.0 and there are several there. But in others the highest is 4.6 ish because scaling is different

I was a straight A student until my junior year when we started doing online learning and quarantine-ing. I failed 2 classes that semester. Then my senior year I started missing a ton of days (40 absences and 39 tardys), luckily I'm still graduating though.

This is definitely the first time I've seen the ranking done correctly. The entire time I was watching the video though I kept wondering why they didn't have any shoes on thinking it will come into play as the video went on but it didn't.

I was totally what David described- I never really tried too hard in high school (or college) and just kinda went with the flow. Yes I did my homework but I never studied a lot or put in extra effort, and I had a 4+ in high school and 4.0 in college (not trying to brag, I don't even use my degree really, I run a home daycare lol). School just came really easy to me, but I was also super lazy and socially anxious so I never joined clubs or anything. I literally remember being in second grade and pretending I couldn't read as well as I could so that in class for assignments I could read the easy "Biscuit" books. Meanwhile, in my free time I was reading The Babysitters Club and Matilda

I don’t live in america but I get why Siena was surprised she was at the top because I also go to a competitive ish school and I got all 7s and 8s (A and A/A*) on my mock exams and you still manage to feel slightly disappointed almost everyone around u is doing better than you. I told myself at the start of this year I’ll be so proud if I get all 7s and a few 6s.

I wasn’t the best student in high school from my freshman and sophomore year I had a 2.0 gpa then my junior and senior year I maintain a 3.5 due to sports lol- my coach did not let us play unless we did well in our classes. But after I went to community college and transferred to university and honestly looking back it’s so interesting to see how grades in high school meant so much when it really didn’t..! I know it’s different for everyone especially individuals going to university after high school high school grades do matter but honestly I seen myself doing so much better in college compared to high school.

We had a really weird system at my high school. Since the 4.0 GPA was the highest achievable GPA, we technically had 8 valedictorians out of 200 graduates.🙃

I was homeschooled and didn’t go to public school because I flunked all of middleschool. I dropped out of homeschooling when I was 16. I went to the technical center for Mechatronics, though, and ended up getting a public school student of the year award and was the top of my class. They made a glitch in the Highschool I was districted for and put me on the graduation roster (I didn’t go to the school and wasn’t a public school student)- I had found out at midnight the day before. The next day I walked the graduation stage without a diploma or a GED. I also passed the Highschool requirement test in 9th grade and started taking college courses in 10th grade. I’d consider myself very average intelligence. School does not tell you how smart you are, trust me.

As much as quarantine sucked, I’m so thankful I help me realize what actually matters when it comes to education! It’s easy to get caught up in societal/cultural expectations and forget to LIVE the teens years that we won’t get back. We’ve got one life, so time is of the essence ‼️

GPA does say a lot about a person but doesn’t automatically equal intelligence, it mostly says how competent, responsible and strong willed you are; Which makes sense for the system to be that way, because being intelligent would serve no meaning if that person is incompetent and irresponsible. (Sorry for my grammar this isn’t my first language)

Well I study in the British curriculum ( a-levels) which is very difficult but I love how positive these teens were!

They didn't specify if it was unweighted or weighted. Weighed cap at 5 I believe and unweighted at 4. Unweighted count the weight of the grades you get in AP and regular classes to be the same.

I graduated last year with a 1.8 GPA. Most people think that means in a dumbass who didnt apply himself but I tried everything possible to be successful during Highschool. I went to every tutor on school for help during my Junior year and I had a 2.4 GPA. But when we had online school for my entire Senior year my grades slipped really bad bc I couldnt handle doing school work without a actual teacher in front of me. Hopefully when I apply to schools in later on this year I can get into one. Bc I refuse to even entertain the fact that I peaked education wise in Highschool

I remember when I joined cyber patriots, speech & debate, and mock trial. Everyone was so shocked when they found I was actually a straight C student. The freshmen were so disappointed when they were hoping I was gonna give them advice for AP and SAT testing. Since I told them I just took mainstream classes.

Great to see that these kids understand that GPA really does not matter… or at least not the most important thing. It was my driving force in high school and instead of actually enjoying my education, I fell victim to trying to be the perfect straight A student. Wish I had learned this sooner, luckily I redeemed myself in college!

I wish they had more of a gradient of GPAs- 2.0 to 3.8 is a stark difference. It's cool they got the exact order right though
