I got only one pick in my ranking: METAL !!!

Considering you're in a quest for metal, cand you do a tier list of every metal in the periodic table?

My top genres and bands: 1. Funeral doom: Mournful Congregation 2. Atmo Black: Krallice 3. Death/Doom: early Swallow the Sun 4. Progressive Metal: Opeth 5. Folk black metal: Agalloch

Great S-tier! Mine would be very similar- would drop 2nd Wave Black out and move Folk-Black + Pagan up. Respect the roots, but I rather prefer what it's morphed into over time. Some of these are pretty tough though since there's outlier bands that really bring up my opinion of a genre. Like Sulphur Aeon & The Ruins of Beverast for Blackened Death & Blackened Doom, respectively.

neue deutsche harte is a term for a new wave of industrial rock and industrial metal from Germany. Rammstein is the best example.

Neue deutsche Härte is kind of a word play. In the early 80s there was a thing called Neue Deutsche Welle. This was the German version of new wave. Maybe you know 99 red balloons. This was the most successful German music style ever. When Rammstein came on the scene, there were a lot of copycats, like Schweisser or Weißglut. So the music press coined the term "Neue Deutsche Härte", which translates to "New German Heavyness". But most of the bands apart from Rammstein and maybe Oomph didn't really catch on. As a German Rammstein is the only band from that genre that kept my interest.

At a quick glance I didn't see this in the comments. Neue Deutsche Harte is a style of industrial music that's sort of on the poppier side of industrial while still maintaining the hard rock sound. Bands like Rammstein, Oomph!, Megaherz, Zeromancer, Eisbrecher, Null Positiv, Raubtier, would fall into that category. If Rammstein aren't your thing in particular, a bunch of bands that sound like Rammstein probably won't catch your fancy. The reason for the distinction, I think, is because on a list of metal genres "industrial" could also include bands that don't fit that sound. Ministry, Pig, Leather Strip, Celldweller, Circle Of Dust, Cypecore, and to some extent even Samael could be considered industrial, but definitely don't fit the whole NDH thing.

Epic metal was coined to differentiate manowar-style music from power metal, which in fact is distinct :) at least, as far as I know

Epic metal refers to heavy metal bands which lean into a doom and power metal direction. This creates a sort of epic feel. Some early Manowar songs, Manilla Road and Cirith Ungol are epic heavy metal.

Well, I don't think I'll be getting a Faith No More album ranking soon :). I nearly choked when Faith No More and Linkin Park were mentioned in the same sentence. For what it's worth: Faith No More is the most important band in my musical history. But of course, de gustibus and so on.

Funk Metal I believe is a combination of Heavy, Alternative and Experimental Metal. The first band that comes to mind for me is Primus.

For me: S: Black Metal (literally any type), Funeral Doom A: Death Metal (and tech Death), Grindcore They'd be my top picks, It would take too long to think about the others.

My favorite genres are, 5. Thrash (favorite bands, Megadeth, Testament, Metallica, Sepultura, Kreator, Vektor) 4. Black Metal (favorite bands, Darkthrone, Inquisition, Deathspell Omega, Emperor) 3. Prog Metal (favorite bands, Opeth, Periphery, Mastodon) 2. Death Metal (favorite bands, Bolt Thrower, Deicide, Death) 1. Classic Heavy Metal (favorite bands, Iron Maiden, Dio, Motörhead) Would’ve said Deafheaven and Mercyful Fate are my favorites for black metal but idk if they count. Blackgaze would be 6 on the list if I added more btw. Alcest Deafheaven etc. Funeral Doom, Death Doom, and Deathcore are close as well

Funk metal - Mordred, Living Colour, Infectious Grooves...

NWOAHM is Avenged, Trivium, Slipknot, God Forbid, Chimaira, LoG, Killswitch etc, not Skillet haha.

I guess avant-garde metal could also include stuff like Fleurety, later period Manes, some Ulver and even Peste Noire

Dark Metal is supposed to be a genre kickstarted by Bethlehem’s debut album with the same name. I wrote “supposed” because it’s not a real thing, just like many other subgenres.

Grindcore - try Plebian Grandstand - like a grindcore version of Deathspell Omega

By the early 80s we were calling Mothers Finest Funk Metal & later in the decade the FM genre would run from the softer end (Bon Jovi meets Prince) of Dan Reed Network, or the hippy glam funk of Electric Boys to Living Colour, 247 Spyz, Stevie Salas Colorcode and Fishbone, which led into early Chili Peppers and FNM ...... by the 90s Bay area thrash band Mordred had added slap bass and DJ Pause, Suicidal Tendencies offshoot Infectious Grooves, Bootsauce, Limbomaniacs and the avant garde funkiness of Primus. ...... in retrospect not many of those bands fit in the same genre. Weirdly Parliament were never included although they undoubtedly belonged.

anything that has to do with "avantgarde" is really hard to rank because every band is pretty different from eachother and there is not a certain unified sound that would make it easy to put into a mold also im guessing cybergrind is grindgore mixed with electronic music?

still kinda disappointed in the fact that you don’t like drone metal that much, but i can 100% see why you don’t like that genre, it is definitely not something for everyone.

When it comes to Alt Metal I’m with you on not liking Deftones and Linkin Park, but Faith No More is amazing! Truly one of the greatest and most unique bands of all time. Totally respect your opinion if you don’t like them. You should definitely give them another chance sometime. Angel Dust is a masterpiece of an album!

So New Wave of American Heavy Metal to me isn't what you mentioned, but more like new heavy metal bands from the US that reproduce that classical 80s heavy metal sound. I'm thinking bands like Eternal Champion or Visigoth (check out both btw, amazing stuff). Neue Deutsche Härte is just German arena rock. Basically Rammstein and similar. Dark metal and Epic Metal are meaningless terms. I agree with most of your choices, although Industrial Metal I'd put way, way higher. I love Deathstars and such. All Deathcore belongs in F tier, as does metalcore.
