Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has one of the most spectacular rosters in video game history and nobody could ever argue otherwise. This is thanks to bringing back every character in the series' history, all the way from Smash 64's Mario to Smash 4's Bayonetta, and then adding a boatload of DLC ending in Kingdom Hearts' Sora. DLC has wound down and the series is done for now, but...what if we just kept going? With some help from the MockRock community, today I'll be going over 100 Smash Bros. characters and putting them on a worthiness tier list. Which I'm sure everyone will wholeheartedly agree with and solve all Smash arguments for the rest of time.

There are a few reasons for this. First off, this is a discussion above all. Yes, you could make any character work in Smash if you were willing to bend them enough, but approaching a list like this with that mindset makes for a much less interesting video. I might as well just sort characters by sales numbers for their series. More importantly, however, remember that this is first and foremost an opinionated list, and for me, moveset potential _is_ a huge consideration. It's not the only consideration, but if a character can feel like they were ripped right out of their home series, that's a huge benefit in my eyes. A recurring comparison is Master Chief to Inkling, i.e. how can I say Master Chief wouldn't work well when Inkling is already in the game? Well, ignoring the fact that Splatoon emphasizes closer ranges than Halo does, I'd have said the same thing about Inkling if we didn't already have them. And now that they're in the game, I'd have been validated, I think they play perfectly fine as a Smash character but don't feel like a particularly faithful translation of their home game, which is a detriment for me. I don't dislike Ganondorf in Smash because he's weak, I dislike him because he doesn't represent the character I enjoy from Zelda. My main is Dark Pit, and I like how he plays as is, but I'd still prefer him if he played closer to Kid Icarus: Uprising. I talk about Smash for a living; I spend a lot of time thinking about character movesets and they matter a lot to me. *Isn't Octoling an Echo Fighter candidate:* Yes, but less so. I'm not a colossal Splatoon fan, but trying to put myself in those shoes, I think there's enough unused Splatoon content that if Octoling was announced and they were revealed to just be an Echo Fighter, I think there's a lot more room to be disappointed than with someone like Akuma or Birdo. *_______Corrections_______* *Raiden:* My Discord server informed me that I mispronounced Raiden's name throughout the video and it's never addressed, whoops! *Credit:* 2 Clips of Bandanna Dee are sequentially credited to Marc626. I feel like with Octoling, the main reason people want one is to represent a variety of other weapons not seen in Inkling's moveset. Sort of like how people would rather Dark Pit represent other weapon types from KIU that Pit doesn't use. There are still a lot of weapon types, sub-weapons, and specials that one could pull from, or in some instances change what move a certain weapon is associated with, like a Slosher aerial somewhat similar to the G&W forward air bomb rather than a Slosher down smash. In this regard, the Octoling acts less as a Character of their own, and more as a vessel with which to explore and represent game mechanics and abilities that were passed over the first time around.

I think they should be like inkling but with more of a focuse on supers as the octo expansion had super based levels Also stuff like f smash being kraken roller so also different weapons

I’ve always imagined Octoling using a Brella for their side special to replace the roller as a Splatoon 2 rep, and I’ve wondered about how it would interact with everything else in the game.

Yeah, on top of that an octoling could show off more of the Splatoon 2 and 3 options like the rolls could turn into dualie shots or brella for the shield. Inkling only uses Splatoon 1 stuff and not a lot of it. Theres a lot of extra moveset potential.

Even if Ravenbeak didn’t end up being a playable smash character in the next smash bros. game, I’m sure Ravenbeak would serve as a great boss, Hades from Kid Icarus uprising would be a cool idea for a boss as well, especially if we got a new subspace emissary if we get a new smash bros. game in the future.

a lot of characters become invalid for him because he doesn't like original movesets like duckhunt and wii fit, but i personally LOVE them and think they make the game so much more wacky and fun. that's why i pull so hard for characters like cooking mama, sans, etc. the moveset can be themed around the original games but not everything has to be 100% pulled straight from them

@@snuffysam I could totally see them justifying a unique insult for every character, that would be hilarious. Could be that she'll fill the entire stage with neurotoxin and the only way to survive is to take her out her cores before that happens. Also could totally see GLaDOS setting up a bunch of turrets in addition. And maybe after insulting you there's a possibility Wheatley takes over and just self-destructs instead. And if you defeat her, there will be cake.

I like how he took the gameplay of the character into account. That’s something most people I’ve seen don’t do when ranking characters for Smash, so it was cool to see it

Well, not for all of them. He had a bad take on the shooter characters thinking all their potential boiled down to being zoners. Like Master Chief, Heavy or THE Leon Kennedy. Which if you know anything about their home series, you know that's a massive misrepresentation of their potential in Smash.

@@MoonGhostDoodles Nah he's definitely correct. Even if they technically have some melee moves, they are still generic punches or kicks or sword/knife swipes. Now I've only played a bit of TF2 and Halo, and absolutely love RE4, but still, their move sets would just feel very 'eh'. Doomguy is the only one in this list that I feel does a shooter character well. Doom is about closing gaps, constantly moving, and just straight up being meaty and in your face, not to mention how batshit insane his arsenal is compared to these guys.

@@vgggyu9vhji981 Nah, he’s not. By that logic Snake and Joker are “Eh” because their non-defining moves are all generic punches, kicks and knife stabs. I can understand the argument against Master Chief and Heavy to an extent. But for Leon, without getting into too much detail. Many have figured pretty creative movesets that would make him play a lot more uniquely from a typical zoner. And represent the series pretty well at that.

It seems weird to rank octoling as a separate character when I've only ever heard them discussed as being an Echo, in which context they'd make perfect sense representing other weapon classes in the same way Dark Pit does - Octobrush in place of inkbrush, Luna Blaster in place of the regular blaster, etc

Even as a semiclone like Isabelle the Octolings would work great. They can change specials mobes by using different weapons like Dynamo and Burst Bomb, or smash attacks like Octobrush. They could even add completely new stuff from the new games like the Brellas in Splatoon 2 or the new squid (octo?) roll from Splatoon 3.

@@VMan776 the side special dynamo could be a cool but impractical 2-frame tool or shield break, either the neutral special or rapid jab could be dualies and allow the octoling to perform two dodge rolls while using it, burst bombs could be used more as a harassment tool than a trap setup, the up special should probably just stay the same. The f-smash could be an octobrush, the u-smash could be either the range blaster or Luna blaster, and the d-smash could be the tri-slosher and all could be slower but more powerful.

@@jcplays5831 if we're making the downsmash into something stronger but slower, wouldn't it make more sense to have it be a sloshing machine? Also, I really like the idea of burst bomb being a combo tool, like it is in Splatoon.

One way I could see the “blank slate” player character issue being overcome for a Dark Souls rep would just be to make it an NPC from the game. Oscar, Anri, Solaire, or even Lucatiel would all play nearly identical to the player character, and would have more defined personalities, making them better possible fits for smash.

My choice for a Dark Souls rep is Soul of Cinder who is basically the player but is an actual character. I think it fit having a boss representing a series that is well known for its bosses

I think it would have been a good idea to add a "D Tier" to differentiate between "bad" and "unworkable" options. Hat Kid, Heavy, and Cuphead do NOT belong in the same tier as Agent 47, GLaDOS, Eevee, and Fall Guy. Speaking of GLaDOS, I'd have liked to see discussion of Chell instead, the actual protagonist who isn't stuck to the ceiling. Also seconding another comment about how it's disappointing Quote wasn't mentioned.

Chell would be pretty interesting… obviously the portals which would be a unique movement option that no character in smash or any of the ones on this list could compare to (Orcane is the only one that comes close), but also having access to other puzzle elements like turrets, and gels, and lasers, would all make for a really interesting trapper move set. And heck, Glados can even be the final smash

Chell seems gimmicky at best and unplayable (at least from a competitive standpoint) at worst. The portal concept is interesting but most stages (especially omega stages) are open ended making use of the portal gun kind of limited to the stage. You can incorporate the gels to give her interesting mobility and she might be able to get a turret/laser or 2 making her a weird keep away/trap character but that just doesn’t sound fun. If we were looking for a valve rep I think Gordon Freeman would be more doable if uninspired but that’s just me.

honestly he would be such a good character, throw all that "too many sword fighters" talk away we all know its really "too many fire emblem characters", hes got plenty of moves and abilities in rising and id love to see a zandatsu ultimate. metal gear 100% needs more reps and raiden is perfect for it.

My argument for Phoenix Wright being in Smash: 1. Someone "not feeling like a Smash character" hasn't stopped them before, look at ROB, Wii Fit Trainer, and Duck Hunt. 2. He already has been in a fighting game, and I really disagree with the take that they pulled his moveset out of nowhere. If you play the games, you can very heavily see the inspiration. He has enough of a basis that you could reasonably make a moveset for him. 3. Smash is about the biggest gaming franchises coming together, yet there are no visual novel reps. Obviously someone like Monika or Makoto (Danganronpa) wouldn't work that well, but Phoenix Wright would make a good VN rep, especially since AA is one of the biggest Visual Novels of all time. 4. We NEED the AA music in Smash. I'm really shocked that not a single song from AA made it in.

to represent an underrepresented genre. smash at this point is a celebration of games as a whole and the fact there's no VN/mystery game rep is mad to me, especially when Phoenix (and Layton, on the mystery front) became one of the faces of the DS era. just feels like a big gap personally to me, but I'm biased towards the genre and Phoenix in smash tbf lol

Watchin' this dude struggle to see how many of these characters would work when half the existing cast in their canonical games have astounding abilities like "jumping" and "existing" is quite entertaining. I mean, I know there's the "without creating a moveset from scratch" element, but that seems different than "I can't see how this would work." Bro, they got Game and Watch to work. They got a toy that didn't even work to begin with to work.

I think one of the best ways to tone down a Mortal Kombat rep would be to use Sub-Zero. Freeze/ice is a fairly underused mechanic in smash especially when compared to fire, so it would be cool (lol puns) to see another ice user as well. Maybe including both Sub-Zero and Scorpion as pseudo-clones?

I'd say the issue is still that the character is from a franchise that is basically banned in Japan. While there aren't really many well known video games banned for sensitive content in several western markets, you can still imagine that it would be a complete PR disaster for any company to try to sneak in content from a banned series, especially in a children's party game. Additionally, what is MK even known for beyond extreme violence? That's what 99% of people know the series for.

@@gebis8515 The MK games are actually not banned in Japan, it's just that the age rating laws (CERO) are very strict there, so it'd take a shit ton of work to remove most of the gore (which is basically removing the series' entire essence) to localize the game to an audience that is barely even interested on them. For that reason, Warner Bros. simply doesn't sell the games there. Japanese people can still import them, but most of them would just play other games like Street Fighter, Tekken or Guilty Gear. So Nintendo wouldn't actually get into any legal problem by including a MK character. However, they probably would not add a character that is practically unheard of in their own country of origin. Sure, they did include Banjo, but he's actually pretty well known in Japan, and at least his games were sold there.

I’m not a big Hat in Time fan, but I definitely think Hat Kid should at least be D tier, because even if there’s not much, I can see a unique moveset with the umbrella and certain hats like the potion or ice one.

For a Hat in Time rep though, I personally think The Snatcher would be a much better choice. His attacks are way flashier and he's pretty malleable too since he's just a floating ghost. The billboard move he has during his boss fight could be like a unique counter similar to Bayonett'a witch time or something.

I feel like just shunning characters for being "gun" characters is just as shallow as hating on sword fighters. Master Chief for example has a variety of weapons and tools in his arsenal that aren't guns and could be applied really well to a smash moveset imo. Gravity Hammer smash attack, energy sword lunge, grenade varients like sticky, grapple hook for recovery etc.

Hell, a lot of the guns in halo have bonuses to melee damage. And for Heavy, he has a very wide arsenal of weapons to draw from, not even counting multiclass items The sandvich, buffalo steak, dalokohs bar, second banana, shotgun, family business and panic attack could all be used for his down special His side special could be using either the killing gloves of boxing, warriors spirit or eviction notice His up special could use the grappling hook His neutral special would definitely be the minigun His basic attacks would all use his default fists Smash attacks could either use a selection of all class melee weapons, or he could use the holiday punch of the fists of steel Aerials could make use of his unused secondaries that aren't used in his down special His final smash would have him call on the rest of the tean to obliterate the enemy in a kritz-boosted barrage from all kinds of weapons. Ideally, it'd be a cutscene final smash

There's a weird recency bias in this tier list that I just can't get behind. Rayman's placement basically just tells me that he's never seen clips of Rayman Origins or Legends, because he dismisses the games as "just jumping", but a) that's a perfect fit for a 2D platform fighter, and b) No. Just no. Rayman basically has all the punches and kicks already in his games that you could almost lift him 1:1 out of his own game into smash. He has been punching and kicking things since his original game in 1995; the main reason behind his design is how his floating detached limbs would make his attacks easy to animate. Agumon's placement seemed weirdly dismissive to me as well. The Digimon franchise has a massive assortment of games and media, but he remembers this 1 anime from his childhood (which Pokemon also had), and says "nope". Also Akuma, Dixie Kong , Funky Kong, and Impa are all A or S tier solely because "They could be echo fighters", but Octoling, Birdo, and Springman are rejected even though all the same logic applies. Jonesy from Fortnight gets in because he's got all the toxic awful traits that make Master Chief a bad fit for Smash, but he is bumped up to B tier, because ALSO has all the toxic awful traits that make Steve a bad fit for Smash, like being able to place his own platforms in a platform fighter.

I don't personally care that much about half of these characters but I feel like you really did some of them dirty. "We're not getting Among Us in Smash". Really? The game made more money then a good portion of the games on the roster already, is more iconic than some of the characters we have in the game, and has quite a bit of potential for an interesting moveset. I also know a great number of people who would unironically love to have them on the roster, and the reveal would generate an incredible amount of hype and publicity. The only reasons people don't want it on the roster is because of over-popularity or memes, and that hasn't stopped other characters from getting requested, like Sans or Jonesy, or in Steve's case added. If the game is still popular and fun, is still getting support and has a strong player base to this day, other then personal bias, there is literally no reason it couldn't happen. And that's just one of many characters that I could talk about, not even the most egregious examples (some of which you fixed yourself later). I mean you have your opinions my guy, but goddamn. At least we're on the same page with the Mario + Rabbids character being more interesting than Rayman from a moveset standpoint.

I think you're heavily underselling Master Chief, Heavy, and Cuphead by saying "they only have ranged attacks." Every character moveset in smash has at least some attacks that you never see them do in game, and lots of characters have almost all of their normals and such improvised. Cuphead could especially easily have a melee moveset adapted to him because he's based off of rubber hose cartoons, the incarnation of slapstick comedy. Just make his neutral special a weaker fox laser you can move while shooting and bam, you've got a Cuphead that plays just like in his games. Heavy also has a high emphasis on punching and being physically strong in every official depiction aside from gameplay.

Agreed, especially with Master chief. Newer Halo game features liek the grappler and even classic staple’s like the combat AR or the meddler definitely heavily emphasize up close combat due to their lack of use case at range. I think Chief could most certainly be in smash without being overly campy.

I think the point he was trying to make was that this is a very slippery slope. Banjo had a couple good projectiles in his home games, so his gameplay centralizes on them in Smash. Then you have the characters that have a million projectiles in their home game

Heavy's purpose in TF2 is about tanking hits and zone control. Bam--heavyweight with zoning, give him a grappling option or two to help this. Between punches, guns, a grapple move and sandvich, that's a fun character that holds true to source material

He only appears in UMVC3 and that's it. You probably did not pay attention because he mentioned it. Also, Pheonix in smash would be boring because he IS in UMVC3. In that game, he was hilarious because he was completely unexpected and the idea of "standard person in fighting game" was completely fresh at the time. In smash, not only would it feel like they would be retreading ideas from UMVC3, but also the archetype I mentioned has been done to death already. WFT, ROB, Plant, Duck Hunt, you get the point. And at the very least, Game and Watch was added back when smash was just Nintendo characters. The charm is no longer there like it used to be before.

I love the idea of Raven Beak having a taunt where he just RIPS off one of his wings and tosses it aside. I also like the idea of him using slow-moving projectiles like the black hole to block opponents from dodging his burst movement attacks. And either the dwarf star attack or Raven Beak X would make for great Final Smashes.

If Sans becomes playable, then he should have a gimmick that is basically getting instant-killed by anything, since Sans has no defense and literally 1HP. Dr. Eggman is a character that I would see more as a Boss rather than playable (If we want a playable evil character from Sonic, then use Metal Sonic) because the best moments of Eggman are his boss battle with his big machines (just like you said).

I'm a little puzzled why Akuma is ranked so high when Ken already covers the echo fighter slot for Ryu, while Octoling ranks at C when a second Splatoon rep could help represent more of the weapons Inkling doesn't already cover. Outside of an Echo Fighter, you could even go the Falco/Wolf route of making them semi-clones so they have more room to stand out form the established Inkling moveset.

I honestly feel like a character's source material not having much to work with in terms of a moveset is kinda irrelevant for Smash. The Star Fox characters, Captain Falcon, Wii Fit, Duck Hunt, G&W etc. had basically nothing to work with and they still adapted them well enough. So I think it's kinda silly to still see that as a limitation.

I find the Chief argument of "he'd just shoot" weak, since Inkling has plenty of melee attacks in it's moveset, and Splatoon doesn't even have a melee mechanic, yet Halo has a universal melee mechanic, and it's a core part of the design of those games (being one of the parts of the "golden triangle" of combat, as said by the original devs).

Crash Bandicoot is my single most wanted character for Smash, and I can't believe he wasn't picked for Ultimate considering his resurgence. I grew up with him but I don't think it's just my bias tbh, he is an icon and he deserves to be in alongside Sonic, Megaman and Pac-man, also he does have good moveset potential considering some of the more genre-breaking games in his roster

Hiss at Bomberman. You don't know how long the series has been around nor how many games he has had. Bomberman even been in a crossover with Wario so he most definitely is deserving of S rank. There was a reason why he was one of the first Assist Trophies revealed. They knew people wanted him in but they had to opt for an Assist Trophy instead (since, remember, all the characters were already chosen ahead of time by Nintendo)

1) Hollow Knight in S tier that makes me happy 2) As a massive Dark Souls fan, I think a far better representative than the chosen undead or ashen one would be one of the more iconic bosses. Considering that the game's difficulty is by far the most iconic part of the series, and the bosses generally provide the largest source of difficulty, I'd argue some bosses are more famous than the playable character, and would make more sense. My top choices would either be Artorias, Nameless King, or Gael. 3) Kinda sad that my personal biggest smash hope, Commander Shepard, didn't make the tier list. He would be a zoner character, but I think combined with the biotic attacks he has at his disposal, and how maybe there could be some creative work around to include some of the dialogue stuff in the game (maybe a powered up paragon and renegade mode or something), I think he could work, and I'd love to see my personal favourite video game character get into Smash lol

Everyone outside of the Kirby fanbase doesn't seem to understand why Bandana Dee is the most asked for Kirby character... its because he started out as a side character, and later in Return to Dreamland became one of the four MAIN characters. He's seemingly just a normal Waddle Dee yet he's just as capable as the other big Kirby reps Dedede and Metaknight. He's been consistently showing up as Kirby's number two, like Luigi is to Mario. In Kirby Fighters he's Kirby's default ally and in Forgotten Land he's literally the only option for player two. He's basically the ultimate underdog character, and he has a LOT of moveset potential with his spear, his parasol, and even the beam wand to represent Waddle Doo. Aside from that, Waddle Dee's are very iconic. They've been around since the very beginning of Kirby and are basically the franchise's secondary mascot. The very reason Piranha Plant was added is more viable for Bandana Dee since he's actually identified as a legitimate character instead of just a basic enemy, and Plant was added for being iconic and well known (apparently). And if he was added it would finally break the always-present "Sakurai Bias," where the vast majority of Kirby rep is from the four older games Sakurai designed. And no, he's not just a Goomba with a hat... Goombas literally just walk and on rare occasions fly/hop. Goombas don't use spears.

If a generic piranha plant from Mario is in Smash, then Bandana Dee deserves to be in Smash for *literally the same reasons but even more so* But honestly, I think Kirby deserves even more than one extra character. Get Bandana Dee in first, absolutely. It feels fundamentally wrong that he's not in the game. After that, I'd go with Dark Matter Swordsman, because it'd be awesome to finally get one of the eldritch Gods that Kirby has defeated in Smash. After that, regarding the Dream Friends, here's what I think for all of them: Rick, Kine, & Coo: honestly would be better suited as either an assist trophy or being added to one of the other Kirby characters Marx: I think he works perfectly as a boss, so not needed Gooey: Maybe? I don't think he has enough time in the spotlight to justify a full fighter, though Adeleine & Ribbon: definitely would be an interesting fighter, but there are other characters I'd like to see more. Dark Meta Knight: Technically has the potential to be a unique fighter or an echo for meta knight, but I just don't think it makes sense, and both Galacta Knight and Morpho Knight would be better echo fighters for Meta Knight Daroach: I think he would work better as an assist trophy with the whole squeak squad Magalor: Definitely has the potential, and definitely is iconic enough to warrant a spot Taranza: Maybe? I think his moveset would be either grappler or trap-based but I don't think there's quite enough material to pull from Susie: Absolutely. Love everything about the character, and would make for an excellent fighter regardless of if she played like a simple fighter or had a "powerup" state Three Mage Sisters: I think they're too new to be totally justifiable, but they could do a Pokemon Trainer thing where the characters had similar normal attacks, different specials, and of course, elemental properties

He's a fan favorite to many, and Return to Dreamland was a big turning point for the franchise (There's a reason it got a remake on Switch so soon). Magolor also starred in his own side story in Magolor Epilogue. Usually they only do that with the big characters like Dedede and Meta Knight (not counting Star Allies, where the side mode featured EVERY ally). To put it into perspective, almost every bit of Kirby representation in Smash Bros. (outside of spirits) is from the first few games that Sakurai made... Yet despite this Kirby's Final Smash is a reference to Return to Dreamland. (Magolor could also be a good rep for the Kirby Clash games, since he would likely have a shopkeeper alt, and use gem apples in his moveset).

To say it isn’t still in the newer games either isn’t accurate either. He might not be a dream friend, but that’s because Void Termina is frankly just dark matter. (And honestly there is no real way to justify Dark Matter working alongside the same you could with the other friends, but besides the point) Not mentioning it appearing directly in Robobot, or more indirectly in Magalor soul. I think it’s more ambiguous nature and personality are a boon more than anything. It allows a lot of room to be creative, as you can pull from nearly every boss in the series history and it would make perfect sense. In fact the soul fights in Kirby consistently pull the majority of their attacks from previous bosses, and Dark Matter would be a perfect representation for all of them. You are truly able to build a character who’s a love letter for the whole series. Dark matter might not be as much a fan favorite, but I think what it represents is more important to the series.

Bandana dee as a reluctant A… I’ll take it. Personally I really like the idea of another floaty puffball with a disjoint. It’s kinda like meta knight, but I think the added range of his spear would make it feel more like a proper disjoint. I don’t want to piss off MK players, but a MK with less gimmicky special moves and less of an emphasis on ladder combos, but instead a more bait and punish play style with added combo ability sounds really fun.

I hope you've seen the SSF2 design then :> Not quite in the more combo ability aspect, but it does succeed in trending him towards bait and punish by making a bit of a zoner, but not to a degree that makes it his winning strategy, as his kill moves are very committal and need either a hard read or a kill confirm. He does make up for that slightly lacking kill ability by having a very good edgeguard game, with a deadly throw that sends down and away if off-stage to easily set this up, along with a massively disjointed dash attack that can also uniquely hit off-stage.

Cynthia is arguably the most beloved non protagonist character in Pokémon, and Lucario is feeling kind of dead in Smash. The solution? In Smash 6, add Cynthia with the team Roserade/Lucario/Garchomp.

That's a cool idea, but Lucario's aura mechanic would be entirely unbalanced if you got to select when you use him (ie only at high percentages).

Very very true. Perhaps they could change it so that Lucario gains aura when he takes damage (not based on percents) and he loses it when he switches. And then balance that. Or they could ditch aura.

Yeah I think they'd just need to ditch the aura mechanic if he became part of a Trainer-type. And to be honest the Aura stuff doesn't have anything to do with the actual Pokemon games, so I dont have any problem with them dropping it from Lucario's toolkit. There have been a lot of other comeback mechanics designed since Brawl so I don't think we'd lose all that much.

I have to say, a Smash Bros that prioritizes canon moveset potential the way your tier list does, over creative interpretations of characters, would be a pretty disappointing Smash Bros. Not only would we not have funky characters like WFT or Rob, characters like Fox or particularly Captain Falcon would never exist. I don't hate your tier list, but that's a boring world I don't want to play Smash in. Why can't we give "pulled out of the ass" movesets for popular characters a chance? If we didn't, We wouldn't have some of the most popular character movesets in gaming, and honestly, we wouldn't have a Smash Bros.

Poorly designed movesets a pass when they come from a 20+ year old game. Everyone and their dog wishes that the older characters got new movesets the same amount of love as the DLC characters.

I don't think full movesets need to be inspired by a character's canon. But I think they need at least some semblance of representation of their franchise. Terry, as an example, has every single move in his kit derived directly from his games. Except his Up-Air. Since there was no elegant way to take a move from his series and incorporate it into said aerial attack. In saying this. Captain Falcon moreso represents F-Zero as a series. Fast. In your face. And that's fine. There's not too much to pull from there. I think characters should strike a balance between made-up and canon. Personally I find Tracer to be a good candidate for a character with a mix of canon abilities and creative liberties. You could easily pull from some of the Overwatch cinematics and comics. Alongside the game itself. Whilst making up a bunch of moves to make her in-line with Captain Falcon's playstyle. Rather than a typical zoner as most shooter characters would lean towards.

@@andyblanton6570 just because a moveset doesn't shove references everywhere doesn't mean it's poorly designed. Fighters like Captain Falcon and Fox are much better designed than many newer fighters with more references, as they perfectly translate their games into a fighting game moveset, while also propping those characters up in ways that wouldn't be possible without Smash. I'd go as far as to say that a fighter like Captain Falcon would be designed worse if he was designed with an Ultimate mindset. Not because Ultimate's designs are bad (quite the opposite, in fact), but because Captain Falcon likely wouldn't have gotten this flashy superhero interpretation that added so much to his character.

Whoever mentioned GLaDOS for this list instead of Chell either hasn't played Portal but thought a Portal rep would be cool, or just thinks she's funny so she should be the fighter. Chell is my most wanted fighter atm and GLaDOS would be a good background character. Maybe an Assist Trophy at best lol.

The way I've always envisioned it was that the main character would be Chell, but various attacks have GLaDOS moving panels or deploying hazards as well as criticising chell's performance in place of proper voice acting

That Master Chief assessment is hilariously short sighted dude. He could absolutely be an Inkling style character that switches between weapons depending on the move without relying on projectiles like Samus or even Snake. The energy sword is so iconic it could be his neutral/tilt weapon and the gravity hammer could easily be used for Smash attacks.

You could absolutely do that, yes. Which would be a huge misrepresentation of how Master Chief actually plays. If you need to do that, I don't consider them to be as good a candidate as someone where you don't need to do that.

@@MockRockTalk how is it a misrepresentation? Is the idea that you normally start off with an AR/BR/magnum so innately Master Chief that using the other iconic weapons from the series is so clashing? That same argument could be made to Snake who is normally outfitted with and uses firearms in his games while hand-to-hand is not the go-to weaponry. Not only that, the assumption that if Chief started off with an AR that he would default to ranged, campy gameplay is extremely presumptuous. It sounds like you haven't played Halo in a long time and while I fully understand you are covering a wide range of characters you aren't very familiar with, please understand that your current assumption is not accurate in what would be a faithful representation of the character.

Pretty old video, but I have ideas I want to talk about. I GREATLY disagree about Heavy. From your perspective he might just be a guy with a gun and that's all he can do, but TF2 is a very colorful game with a lot to draw from and some interesting ideas to bring to the table. Heavy has 4 distinct weapon types, his miniguns, shotguns, lunchbox and his fists. The shotgun can be fairly easily ignored if necessary since most Heavy mains don't run it, since the lunchbox is more important. To make a moveset for Heavy, I think its important to first identify the core of TF2. TF2 is, at its core, a team oriented game that is remarkably well balanced. Over time, however, as more additions has been made the wackiness of its taunts and player interactions has also become a core of its identity. We can't include the "team" aspect but we CAN include the wackier taunt ideas. So, I would suggest giving Heavy fun taunts that encourage silly interactions, and at least 1 special centered around a taunt. My suggestions for his taunts are as follows: High Noon, a finger pistol tauntkill with surprising range but excessive startup that can nevertheless be cancelled, dealing high damage and knockback if it lands. Schadenfreude, a laughing taunt very common in TF2 that's also an actual taunt. Lastly, rock-paper-scissors. This is unique and the most interesting. This is a unique endless cancellable taunt, except this one causes the Heavy to challenge the enemy to rock-paper-scissors, which the enemy may accept. Both players input a button to choose which they pick, and the loser (if any) takes high damage and knockback if they lose. The Kazotzky Kick has no lag when cancelled, so the Heavy isn't disadvantaged by using it. Kazotsky Kick could also be a taunt, another endless cancellable taunt where Heavy can move slowly while he dances, but there's stiff competition from High Noon and Schadenfreude. For his specials: Up Special: Going off of the idea of taunts, up-special is based on Flippin' Awesome, a taunt where the player stops in place and flips another player who taunts in their direction. When used, another class will appear in front of the Heavy, based on how long the button is held. These are Scout, Soldier, and Heavy. Scout will fail to throw Heavy, dropping him straight down as a Stall-then-fall style attack. Soldier will struggle to throw Heavy, sending him on a more horizontal angle. Heavy will launch Heavy upwards, sending him on a vertical angle. This allows for two different launch angles based on situation, and a goofy attack that directly pulls from when Heavy is thrown in Flippin' Awesome. Neutral Special: This will be his classic minigun. Since the minigun is hitscan, I don't think it makes sense to use this as a zoning projectile-based tool, but at the same time I don't like the idea of using it a serious attack. I would suggest that the minigun will be a long-range attack with 52 frames of startup (matching its .87s rev time in TF2) with an additional 1 second of charge time before it can deal maximum damage. It deals low % at long range (no knockback), decent % at mid range (no knockback), and high % at close range with high knockback. It can be aimed 360 degrees, is hitscan, and hits the target instantly. The main purpose of the Minigun is to encourage the enemy player to approach you, since the damage the Minigun deals is significant for how non-committal it is, and at closer ranges its low speed makes it a classic unusable Big Move. Down Special: Glove Swap + Sandvich. In TF2 Heavy has a variety of melee options, and since in Smash these will represent a not-insignificant portion of his toolkit, Glove Swap will represent these by allowing Heavy to switch his gloves for different effect, similar to Monado Arts. These effects will be: Stock: No special effects. Not picking another option will select this. Gloves of Running Urgently: Increases Heavy's speed, but causes him to gain temporary % up to an additional 200 % that slowly drains while not in use. Eviction Notice: Smaller speed boost with slower % gain, but additionally speeds up his punches at the expense of damage, and further boosts speed when an enemy is hit. Warriors Spirit: Increases damage and knockback taken by both Heavy and the opponent. Fists of Steel: Reduces damage taken from most sources, but greatly increases damage taken from melee attacks. Sandvich/Second Banana: Eats a Sandvich that recharges on a 30 second timer, restoring some % OR a Banana that recharges on a 10 second timer that restores notably less %. Either one or the other, but not both. These give Heavy the ability to adjust how he plays, but come with significant downsides that naturally limit their use and can backfire tremendously. Side special: Equips a Shotgun, an item that is similar to the minigun, but with much lower % at close-mid range, no knockback at all, but very little startup comparatively. Has 6 shots, those shots can be aimed, and it can be thrown like a regular item. It has a 5/10 second recharge that starts when the shotgun disappears from the field. The Shotgun is more usable at midranges, encouraging approaches at close-mid range where the Minigun encourages approaches at mid-long range. Unlike a Zoner who uses their ranged tools to try and keep the enemy OUT, the intention of these tools is to draw the enemy IN. Their damage can't be dodged and can rack up % quickly, but do nothing to stop them from approaching to a distance where those tools aren't as useful. The Minigun is of use against enemies who try to stall, the Shotgun is of use when the Minigun is too slow, and a few of his gloves are of use in approaching the enemy. The sustainability offered by the Sandvich is also intended to draw the enemy in, discouraging passivity that gives Heavy time to heal. Heavy isn't fast even with the GRU (and the GRU does the enemies job for them if overused), so he's generally incapable of stalling himself, even against slow characters like Ganondorf and Inceneroar. Besides those, Heavy fits the mold of your standard heavyweight, but with a focus on drawing enemies into his effective range with harassment tools. I have some other ideas, like Down Smash being the Huo-Long Heater fired at the ground in front of Heavy with some ground protection in the form of a ring of fire, his forward tilt being a two-part downward punch combo based off of Meet the Scout, his grab animation based off of Meet the Scout a crouch animation based off of his squat in Meet the Spy, jab and forward smash being his punch and crit uppercut respectively, etc. There's a lot to draw from, admittedly with some blank spots (aerials in particular), but to say Heavy has nothing at all is blatantly untrue.

Kinda sad about Rayman in C tier :(. I actually feel like he has alot of moveset potential. He has no limbs, so you could give him long range attacks without any hitboxes in between. Kinda like marth, except there is no middle part at all. But whatever, I'm probably just biased

Well, you're better than me. I thought his reasoning for Rayman ("he only really works as a platformer") uses terrible logic. Logic that could also apply to Crash, Spyro or Shantae above & would be just as wrong. His boomerang-like appendages alone lend to potential fun attacks with creative liberty, but add onto that with stuff like the plum, the walking shell, the lum swing & the power-ups in Rayman 3 & that's a potentially well-rounded fighter in my book. Fanworks like Rivals of Aether & SSF2 showcase how well this would work. And to put him beneath Rabbid Peach (no shade at her as a character or her game), who mostly has stuff already used by characters in Smash & would, at best, have guns that alter stats, or Lloyd Irving who has...an extra sword? Come on! I like MockRock's content alot, but his reasoning for some of these character spots here makes me glad that some people don't control who gets in Smash...

I think an interesting way to do an eevee rep without it being a gimmick would be to go the Kazuya demon form route, with certain attacks quickly evolving eevee before de-evolving them after the attack, I dunno, could be cool

It was only in the Manga but there was an eevee who could control its evolutions. The process was painful.. but it could freely change between Flareon, vaporeon, Jolteon, and back at will. Manga Team Rocket did some messed up stuff.. but VEE was a legitimate and very intelligent threat

28:31 Now hold on, a character having the ability to fly is a bullshit reasoning, there's 17 characters in the roster than can canonically fly/float, although that does include the pits, who can only do so for 5 minutes- unless we shove medusa's verge of death corpse into Pittoo's wings again, actually heck, the pegasus wings remove the time limit for pit- so that's entirely 17 characters that canonically have the ability to fly. Not including most of the mario characters because, that just means giving everyone a clown car, and Bowser Jr. Is the only one rockin one. Y'know how all the characters that can fly/float have been handled? Bigger air jump, or multiple jumps. The ability to fly, cannot be used against a character, smash has already handled that well.

It makes me sad that of all TF2 reps, people clamour for the heavy. He's so slow and the minigun would be so boring to play around. Compare that to Scout, whose best ranged option is a pistol or a baseball while being a speedster with a built in double jump Soldier (rip Rick May) who has a more dodge-able rocket launcher that could also be used to set up "market gardens" through rocket jumps Pyro who's primary is a flame thrower which could uniquely build him as a damage character who might struggle to kill (also built in reflector with airblast) Demoman who could play similarly to snake, but could also spec into a demoknight in places to make him more in your face Or even Spy whose invisibility and backstab mechanics would focus him as a character about out manuevering your opponent and faking them out. I'd argue that every TF2 character is iconic and that just because heavy is the poster child, doesn't mean that the other mercs just lose out on their opportunities. I'd expect the TF2 community of all communities to be more creative than this

I do think other tf2 characters also have a lot of potential, but saying the Heavy would be inherently boring is also underestimating his potential. Yes, he does have a minigun, but there are a ton of other ways he could capture the feel of tf2 as this casual and goofy shooter. If the idea of Heavy sounds boring to you, then you're probably not getting creative enough with him.

Heavy is sorta seen as “the face” of TF2 by many players so it kinda makes sense as to why people want him. He is the guy who is front and center on the box art after all. But I am in agreement that there are better choices for a TF2 rep mechanically. As I think TF2 absolutely deserves as Smash rep.

The 2 best options imo are heavy and scout Heavy could be a really fun heavyweight if they get the moveset right And scout also has some really good options and cool mechanics like: using the winger for his first 2 jumps to make them highter and also pull out the atomizer for a 3rd etc…

For me a lot of the fun of seeing a new character added to the game is finding out how Sakurai and the team have interpreted them, And how that might surprise me or differ from my own perspective. I think that's where a lot of these off the wall pics come from, the desire to see just what they would do with it. I can certainly sympathize with the perspective that you bring, but as an example imagining what they could do with a fighting game character that is more tightly focused on rhythm as a mechanic I think is exciting even if I can't quite imagine it myself.

I think Steve is an incredibly interesting character! You can talk about balance or playstyle, but in terms of skill ceiling and personal expression through a character's moveset, Steve is at the very top of the pile.

Everytime I hear the "weapon" argument of Fire Emblem reps, I groan. What the heck is the actual difference between a big sword and a big axe? That you can "pull" stuff with the head of the axe? Ike swings his sword in the same way he would do for an axe. You can trade Ragnell for Urvan and he would still look and feel the same, is just now we can finally stop considering that dumb 1-2 range argument for giving him a projectile. People want FE characters reps despite that character archetype already existing too. "Lyn could be interesting because she has a bow, is quick and very agile". That is Pit, my dude. Besides making Lyn extremely quick and speedy, what you want is just faster Pit. I really DO NOT get FE reps in this category.

Holy shit someone finally gets it, thank you so much. I never understood the hate for swords, the problem was always WHO it actually is. Like Byleth is barely a swordfighter (and I love playing as them and FE3H), but that doesn't change the fact that they are just another FE character, which is just a franchise with moderate popularity at best and already had 7 other characters.

Octopath specifically is really weird to think of in Smash because the whole deal is that it's a party of eight. Bringing one into Smash and not the rest wouldn't be meaningfully representing the game and a stance change character with eight modes would just be awful to play

Definitely agree there. It’s difficult to justify picking one out of eight characters that, for all intents and purposes, are treated equally in the game itself; no one stands above the rest and that makes picking a theoretical Smash rep tricky.

32:58 I don't think i specified that the Mii Mage i requested would have had a moveset from Miitopia(my bad) In Miitopia the Mii Mage alone doesn't have the most original moveset you can give her but are the mechanics of the game that can make her interesting but she has some original stuff like the personality skills and the types of magic she can use can work in a moveset, i immagine her with the Sprinkles mechanic: she could have a MP meter just like Hero but it doesn't restore when you hit an opponent, instead you can restore it by waiting(same as Hero) or you use the MP Sprinkle(by pressing Shield + B) to restore her MP but the Sprinkle has a limit and can only be reused after you lose a stock. Also team attacks could work with a Mii class joining during the Smash Attacks (Warrior,Cleric and Cat are the main ones used in the trailers and in the cover of the games) and they are treated like projectiles but they stop helping when they are hitted 3 times and they return only after losing a stock(just like in the game) That could make a Zoner that is not only focused around THROWING projectiles but also WHEN and HOW to throw the projectiles, the Projectiles themself would obviously be very strong but they cost a lot of MP and the ones that don't cost MP like the Smash Attacks(You can move during a smash attack kinda of like Olimar but with visible animation and a big start-up to the attacks) are risky if not used correctly and the 4 good moves that are completely safe (F-tilt,Fair [using the animation of the normal attack from Miitopia] Nair and grab) have trouble killing,they are slow and they are only good for resetting neutral(Also i want some more Miitopia content than just 2 songs). But that doesn't matter a lot because i'm still happy you put her in C tier and not in F Tier. Anyway great video and keep up the good content!!!

Even taking inspiration from Miitopia, it's hard to make a Mii's moveset SUPER cohesive because Mii's need to have customizable specials. I get that you just want it to be a Miitopia rep entirely with only the skins being custom, but ultimately the point of Mii's is to sell Mii costumes, which means you need a more "generic" archetype moveset so any character can fit over it. Same reason I doubt a Mii would ever summon assists in a moveset... that's a major thing that wouldn't really be customizable (at best, it would be clones of the base Mii wearing different outfits... not really very "generic" though). With that said, I don't dislike your idea of "when & how to use" being the main concept behind Mii Mage. With rushdown/grappler, disjoint, and zoner being the three archetypes already taken, "trapper" is the big archetype not really used yet. IMO, the way Mii Mage should work is to have fairly weak normals, but all the specials have weird utility that can have huge benefits to the fighting style. Specials similar to Pac-Man's bonus fruit, Dedede's Gordo, placing mines on the stage, Sephiroth's Shadowflare, and perhaps a special or two that does fit the "really strong but limited use" idea (though it would be ammo instead of tacking on a mana mechanic). And Miitopia could be referenced in the moves' animations, though avoiding any assist summons as I mentioned. That would be a character who's really technical to play as, and absolute hell to fight against if you haven't memorized the weirdass combo trees of every Mii Mage loadout.

@@snuffysam I disagree, Miis are famous for being able to add family, friends and characters from other series into Nintendo games and Miitopia does the same thing. My idea would be to have the option to choose which Mii you have on the team instead of choosing special attacks and costumes, imagine you have the Shrek face mii warrior using F-Smash. I agree with your moveset idea, but I think the projectiles should go straight to the point with a few exceptions. The fire would be the same as that of Hero MegaFire would be a long-range projectile with good kill potential Tower of Flames would be a bullet that must touch the stage to transform into a pillar of fire that has incredible kill potential but costs a lot of MP. Explosion / Mega Explosion and Giga Explosion is a very similar move to Zelda but it costs MP, you can't angle it and it moves slower but the hitbox would be much bigger (depending on how long the move stays out the explosion changes shape and costs more MP ) Lightning / Mega Lightning / Giga Lightning is the recovery that starts with a jump in the air and then pulls down a lightning bolt, this move is similar to Mythra's Ray of Punishment but does not have the initial hitbox so it makes the move quite useless outside the shield, like the side b and neutral b boosts depending on how much it loads And the last one is Barrier which puts a barrier in front of the Mii Magician which halves the damage obtained but costs a lot of MP and can be broken if the Mii Magician is hit from behind or is grabbed. More than Trapper, I was thinking of a resource based zoner that uses bullets that seem simple but with many ways to use them but without creating a wall of projectiles Sorry for the text wall btw

Personally, some characters I would love to see in the Future Smash are: -Crash or Spyro for the PS1 Platformer Rep -Ratchet and Clank/Sly Cooper/Jak and Daxter for PS2 Platformer Rep -Dante -Noah or Mio for Xenoblade 3 rep -Raiden from MGR -Persona 3 Protagonist or Mitsuru Kirijo -Megaman Zero -Tidus or Zidane from FF10 and 9 respectivly

After seeing that new Xenoblade 3 trailer, I think having Noah and Mio as a duo would be very interesting, especially considering the new mechanic where they fuse and transform into a literal Gundam. Would be very cool to see that happen on a Smash match.

Rayman is my personal top pick, I'm mostly affiliated with him through the Rayman Rabbids games, which are just great. I think neutral B being the plunger gun would complete my life lmao. I think he has mostly American fans, and those who are fans of him are huge fans. But he's slightly on the cult side. I'd give him a B tier personally, though. He is frozen in Battlefield after all! I also never thought of Maxwell from Scribblenaughts, but that's now my second pick! He could have something like a Hero scroll wheel, or a hodgepodge of funny abilities like G&W or Villager. I agree that B tier is a good spot for him. Edit: he could be pretty cool with his own customizable options before the game like a Mii fighter. But they could have more creativity with his movesets by making him his own fighter, I'd say.

Zero's Z-Saber being a multhit energy sword should give an entirely different feel to him than almost any other fighter. Tons of source material + fighting game movesets to pick from, more than one iconic design to pull from, and a strong legacy makes this my number one pick.

King Hippo could be a grappler in role, but punches that launch then combo instead. (A weirdly common archetype, grappler but grabs are replaced with combos that function like grabs) But Aran Ryan’s sheer chaos from his cheating and powerful glove flail (OH BABY A ~~TRIPLE!~~ QUADRUPLE!!) would be amazing, pair it with Mobility and He would be perfect. Aran Ryan literally drags you to him, but can work as a zoner. He has this sheer nigh unrivalled Stage control. Also, a ton of projectiles. And theft. Limited by his getting in being risky for a rushdown (very powerful if he does) and if you play him as a purely a zoner, it could work, but the endlag and cooldowns means you’re better off as a stage control-stance character with more mixups, plus Jack of all trades, master of none. Or stance as a extending hitbox zoner for racking up damage, then close up for knockback

he didn't do that for bomberman.... he has more like rooeys which are kangaroo creatures he can ride on and they do different things like dashing and jumping, a jetpack, elemental bombs like ice and thunder, maybe a skull powerup move where he can throw on people (or maybe himself) to debuff people like movement speed or poison damage, remote bombs, rubber bombs that move back and forth, landmines and charboms that can do various moves like electricity and fire

I am so glad Knuckles is in S tier, I think he has so much potential with just his mobility options. The Sonic series in smash has pretty terrible representation, a single character with the single worst moveset in the game, two very samey stages, and a weak music selection considering the pedigree of Sonic music. I kinda disagree with Shadow being an echo, not because it doesn’t fit, but because it'd just add another character with the same awful moveset, and if they’re gonna differentiate him them it’d be better to just use that effort to fix Sonic

I think he was too harsh with Dr. Eggman’s placement, even if he appeared kind of clunky like he mentioned, I’m sure he would work as a fun character to play as, plus Dr. Eggman is one of the most iconic of all video game villains, with Bowser, Ganondorf and Sephiroth who are also among the most iconic video game villains, already being in the game, we really should get Dr. Eggman, if I could only pick two sonic reps to add to smash bros. ultimate I would definitely choose Dr. Eggman and Shadow, but if I could choose 5 then I’d add Knuckles and Tails, I just care more about Dr. Eggman and Shadow over those two personally.

Something I don't see any of here is just how insane a Monster Hunter rep could be. Monster hunter has such a large amount of weapon types to pull moves from, all with their own unique traits and movesets. My ideal Monster Hunter character would be able to swap weapons with down special (or even in the start screen, but that might be too crazy for a smash character) between a few classic weapons from the series, like dual blades, longsword, hammer, and maybe something more off the wall like hunting horn. Final Smash could be a chargeblade amped element discharge or something referencing nergigante or Zorah Magdaros. Even if that wouldn't work or would be too intensive, you could give them the Byleth treatment of using different weapons for different moves, like bow for neutral special, longsword for forward tilt, etc. The amount of moveset potential for me is just too good not to pass up, especially with the craziness that could come from swapping weapons.

I feel like you could have most weapons in the moveset. Jab: Dual Blades. Dash attack: Dual Blades. F-tilt: Long sword. U-tilt: Long Sword or SnS. D-tilt: SnS or Switch Axe (if you wanna go wild) F-Smash: It has to be Greatsword I think. U-Smash: Charge blade I think extended the sword up would look cool for this. D-smash: Hammer. Dunno about throws atm. N-air has got to be Insect Glaive. F-air could be interesting, depending on distance or something you could either insect glaive or dual blades. B-air could be insect glaive or something spicy as well. D-air I feel like being able to pogo with insect glaive is necessary for d-air. Neutral special could be a mix but I feel like the coolest options are Iai counter or Bow. Down special could be a two part move hold it down to use heavy bow gun and charge up a shot or use it immediately and put down a bomb. F-special has to be either another zoning tool like LBG or something like Lance charge I feel like Lance charge would be cooler. Up-special might have to be something to do with wirebugs but it could still intergrate something like a gunlance rocket jump that’s made up or it could just be an insect glaive thing. I think it would be cool for the shield animation to be one of the three shields too, they could even add in a unique mechanic where depending on the direction you hold when you shield you can switch to that type and do something unique out of shield. SnS quicker move out of block or parry, Lance letting you do a hop backwards and going for a punish and Gunlance letting you attack with it afterwards for the first attack. I think the final smash has to have the Dragonator in it for the meme at some point. This was way longer than I should’ve typed. I forgot hunting horn but maybe that could be used for b-air or in a special like up special instead.

I think the biggest problem for Dante in Smash is surprisingly liscening issues. Since it would be hard to put in a character from a game called "DEVIL may cry" and he would have abilities like "DEVIL trigger". it's not that I think it would be bad, but hard to put in a E rated game. They even called his mii skin from the game "Dante". he is my top pick though.

The thing about the ability names makes... no sense. Kazuya literally has multiple moves with "Devil" in the name, and even a move called "Gates of Hell". They're clearly not afraid of naming moves like that. The thing about the game/series name I guess makes a little more sense, but I have really a hard time believing it'd be a dealbreaker.

Thought I'd throw out a couple characters I like that didn't make the list, but I've seen people ask for (like me) - Quote (Cave Story) More or less the granddad of modern indie games. Could make Curly a costume too. Has a number of neat weapons including a sword (he only throws the sword in game but uses it like an actual sword in Blade Strangers), and I think the leveling up system could work. In Cave Story you get exp from defeating enemies (the exp drops as little items you pick up, but you could just make it so you get exp from hitting people with melee attacks), so having to power up your weapons before you can get strong projectiles could be interesting. Vaati (Legend of Zelda) This one isn't happening unless Nintendo actually brings the guy back, but I can dream (please nintendo throw me a bone here). The only character besides Ganon to be the main villain of more than one game, can do magic stuff, could probably transform between his eyeball monster form and humanoid form. But again, not happening unless Nintendo decides to bring him back. (no, he is NOT owned by Capcom just because they worked on the games he was in) Adeleine, probably with Ribbon (Kirby) I do want Bandana Dee in Smash, but Adeleine is my most wanted from Kirby. You could have Ribbon with her like in Star Allies, being able to do more standard attacks with her like their spin attack in Star Allies, but since Adeleine can pain all sorts of things either to ride or just go fight for her, as well as just being able to slap things with her paint brush (that thing where she just runs forward and flails the brush all over is an obvious dash attack), you could do interesting things with her moveset. Sub Zero (Mortal Kombat) Scorpion is already on the list, but I think you can feasibly make one of them an Echo Fighter if you base them more on their MK 1-3 appearances where they're pallet swaps and share a lot of normals, and change their specials a bit. You can even have them both use swords in their movesets as while Scorpion has his swords, Sub Zero often makes ice swords. Their specials I can imagine being pretty functionally similar while still feeling unique, with a projectile (Spear/Ice Ball), teleport recovery (Scorpion always has a teleport, but Sub Zero can teleport too, he just doesn't always have it as a move in gameplay), side special can be sorta similar with Scorpion having his summon fire move while Sub Zero can have the ice puddle, and then down special can either be some sort of gimmick or just be a more unique move like Ice Clone or a fire buff that isn't similar to what the other has at all. This list, overall, is pretty damn solid. A majority of the placements made are pretty much where I'd end up putting them, but there's a couple of issues that I have with certain placements/choices and reasons why. #1: Heavy - The explanation for Heavy sounds like you didn't put too much time into looking how Heavy or a majority of Team Fortress 2 works, because I feel disregarding a character with having no moveset potential when the character has not only a plethora of melee weapons to pick from, but also the aspect of using team-based combat and utilizing assists from the other mercs is absolutely underestimating how much identity Heavy could not only have as a character, but Team Fortress has as a franchise. It was just a rotten take, and I feel needed some more time in the oven. Same for characters like Leon Kennedy (a character who shows he can utilize close-range combat options thanks to not only his knife, but general use of close-range combat with punches, flips, kicks, etc.) Master Chief and Agent 47. #2: Branching off from the first point, I honestly think your disregard of creating original moves/content for a character is kind of jarring. Considering Smash's most iconic and popular characters, Fox and Captain Falcon, are just that, I think you need to think a little more outside the box. An over-assumption about how a character could/would play is also really off-putting and really took me out of the video at times. Speaking from experience, creativity is a wonderful way of not only breathing new life into a character's potential, but also making a great design even greater. Think less "Oh, I have to make up new moves" and more "I can take this aspect of the character and represent in a way that's yet to be done." #3: The remark about Rayman not having much powers is simply untrue. Rayman in both Legends and Origins is basically a platform fighting game character in a regular platformer, and that's even taking into account the abilities the character has utilized in his 3D adventures. This feels like a comment that needed a bit more research put behind it. #4: On the topic of Eevee...listen, I absolutely loathe self-plugging, mainly because I don't deserve the publicity, but I made it work and made it work well. #5: Krystal's moveset potential with her staff alone is already incredible, and it would add so much to Starfox both in terms of representation of canonical material and just playstyle differentiation. It's literally endless creative freedom and I feel she deserves at least A tier. Other than that, everything else is fine. I'm glad you pushed Doom Slayer upwards and I am totally behind you when it comes to Raven Beak. Definitely one of my top newcomer requests for Smash 6 as well.

An interesting thing to note about #2 is that both Fox and Capt. Falcon were introduced in Smash 64, which was back when Mr. Sakurai just wanted to make a fun mascot fighter and wasn't at all aware of what kind of direction the series was going to take, and there weren't any Smash fans who would be disappointed with movesets that took great creative liberties. A few more notable examples of similarly "contrived" movesets would be the Ice Climbers, R.O.B., and Duck Hunt Duo; these each happen to be somewhat obscure(?) retro first-party picks without a lot of source material to go off of. Mr. Sakurai came up with really cool, unique ideas that excellently communicate the charm and key concepts of the source material, but it's important to keep in mind that he didn't really have much of a legacy or clamoring fans to satisfy in doing so. So while I largely agree with your point, I'm unsure of how worthwhile it would be to try to pull off another "contrived" moveset quite as iconic as that of Fox or the Captain for a popular pick with lots of source material. It seems difficult to think of coming up with something entirely new for a character like that, now that the Smash series has built up such a reputation for newcomers that essentially carry the perfect essence of their home games in with them. TL;DR, faithfulness to the home franchise has become such a lauded, enormous focus of the Smash series overtime, that outside of edge cases with relatively small and obscure franchises, it's really quite jarring to think of them being anything but extremely faithful, for better or for worse.

Like i imagine Riku being a more grounded speedier version of Sora, which isn't much diff than most swordies. I would say Ansem would have an extremely unique moveset & he makes the most sense for a villian pick since the Sora we have in Smash is his KH1 incarnation.

Phoenix and Hat Kid in F tier seemed really harsh. I get that Hat Kid isn't an extremely popular character and A Hat in Time isn't an extremely popular game, but the moveset potential is way greater than you made it out to be. And for Phoenix, someone else in the comments already pointed it out, but the large majority of his moveset in MVC3 directly references moments from the AA games and various actions he does in those games (even most of his normal moves are direct references to the game) so to say that his moves in MVC are "pulled out of nowhere" is just ignoring the source material entirely. I get that these moves don't exactly make the most sense for a fighting game, but characters like Villager and Isabelle are perfect examples of this concept working well in Smash. Other than that, I think that a case could be made for Conker, Ratchet and Clank, and Rayman to be bumped up a tier. I don't think Conker would have to be toned downed as much as you think (certainly not as much as characters like Doomguy and Scorpion), and the Smash 64 Remix mod has actually done an amazing job at giving us a detailed, playable glimpse at what his moveset in a Smash title could look like. I'm not too familiar with Rayman outside of the most recent games (Origins and Legends), but I'm sure there's no shortage of abilities and powerups from the various side games and spinoffs that can used to fill out his moveset, particularly his specials. As for R&C, I honestly think they could potentially end up being a more interesting and nuanced take on a trap/zoner archetype. Think Snake, but with much more dynamic and unique projectiles. Also I personally think that Crash could squeeze into A tier. There are a few entries in the CB series that have a 3D beat 'em up style of gameplay (Crash of Titans is one of them that I myself have played), and I think taking inspiration from those games could help prevent most of his normals/overall moveset from just being variations of spins and punches. Plus if they really want to get wacky with his moves, there's a lot of stuff from the spinoffs to draw from, similar to Rayman in that sense. Besides that, great video. I think you did a pretty good job of rationalizing and explaining each character's placement even when personal bias bled through. Jonesy in B tier hurts a lot and it hurts even more that I don't entirely disagree with it. :(
