I really recommend you to listen to Hybris by Anglagard. It was one of the albuns you didn't know. It's a delightful and epic symphonic prog. Also Remedy Lane by Pain of Salvation is a banger. Great video!! The list was fine!
Good list Niamh, and I can definitely agree with most of your ratings, though for me Wish You Were Here isn't quite at the same level as Animals. I would highly recommend the Riverside album, they are a really solid band, and do give The Raven That Refused to Sing a chance when you get a chance, I think you will really enjoy it. My only suggestion was even if you didn't know a record, I wish you had named it, as there are several there I don't know either, but might want to check out.
I definitely agree with a lot of your rankings like Pink Floyd and Yes, however I guess I would be in that select group that thinks Tales is an underrated album that is actually great but is still divisive amongst fans and critics. I was initially bored with the album upon first listen, but I guess once I started listening to it more and more, I started appreciating the profoundness and aesthetic of the album even more regardless of how long the songs are. I would definitely say it's their most beautiful album. But it is one of those albums that you need to listen to multiple times to fully appreciate it. And if it isn't great to you, then that's fine. It's understandable.
I basically said the same thing as a reply to her comment at the top of this thread. I was 15 when I heard just 3 minutes of Tales and from that moment on, Tales became my favorite album which made Yes my favorite band. A year later I bought Tales with money from my first paycheck. It was expensive for 1974, but worth every penny for confirming my first impression of it. Still the finest music ever written or recorded in all music history.
Hi Niamh! Tiermaker/Tier List videos are always fun! I love watching them and I've made several of them myself on my channel in fact, most recently with another RU-vidr. I agree with some of your ratings, but certainly don't agree with many others. But that's cool, and to be expected. It's probably worth adding that you didn't know any of the Pain of Salvation albums. I would love to hear your take on some of those, and some of those Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson albums included but were only vaguely familiar with or didn't know. But whenever you have time and motivation of course. Pain of Salvation is a massive favorite mine and many among Prog and Prog Metal fans, and given your appreciation for Metal, Tool and Dream Theater, they very well could be a band you could enjoy.
Ok Niamh, I very rarely comment videos and I know it's quite out of subject but PLEASE take a listen to the new Earthside - Let The Truth Speak. It's been released 2 weeks ago and it's an absolutely mindblowing album ! Peace from France
Sounds like you didn't create the list? List would have been better if each group was limited to 2 albums max and included more artists like: Jethro Tull, ELP, Rush, Deep Purple, Gentle Giant, Tool, Queensryche, etc. Appreciate your content though. Always on the lookout for something new, or missed/forgotten.
Great choice's Niamh, you have your own selections, everyone have their own right what they like."Dark side of the Moon" is my favorite, but I love all the Pink Floyd albums.Their are others albums on the list that I have.Great job!👍
Hoping you'll dive into those great "unknown" albums. Also, if it's still unknown to you, I think you'd love the progressive/symphonic rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar - album version, with Ian Gillan (pre Deep Purple) as Jesus. Phenomenal album!
Just a helpful hint...you should identify the albums you don't know for the benefit of those who don't recognize the album cover. They are kind of hard to see.
I missed to see Awake by Dream Theater in your list, that is my all time favourite Dream Theater album. Also I suggest give more listens to Foxtrot, this album for me is their most consistent and strong work by far. Love it until today. Nice video despite of these two details lol. Cheers . PD: I forgot it but in a next video like this you could add some Gentle Giant and Jethro Tull stuff.
Hey Niamh. Wgat about ranking the 'Canterbury' albums or maybe your favourite Kraut Rock or Italian Prog selections? I know many disagree, but I'd rank all the DT albums under 'meh'.😊 Sorry but i just don't like them. And I'd have put both VdGG's in the top ranking. Just my opinion. Great video btw.
“Still Life” and “Ghost Reveries” by Opeth are two masterpieces, Still Life is a deathmetal masterpiece but with less prog than Blackwater Park. This is where the connection comes: Blackwater Park is a very good deathmetal album with prog and Ghost Reveries is masterpiece prog album with deathmetal. And I think your Tierlist needs more Mastodon. Bloodmountain and Crack the Skye are "prog must haves"in my opinion.
Very strange selection of records. I m a huge Pain of salvation fan tough, prog metal elite in my opinion. You also skipped Second Life Syndrome by Riverside and Ghost Reveries (Opeth best and proggiest album). You should really dive into the modern prog scene. P.S. Godbluff is definetely greatest hehe.
Why no ELP? They used to be one of your favorites. You had their pictures on your wall and you wore a Keith, Greg and Carl shirt (I think that was you). And where's Tull (Aqualung, Thick as a Brick)?
I think there are a lot of prog fans and Yes fans that secretly think (and they don't dare say in polite Yesfans company) that Tales From Topographic Oceans would be a competitor of Close to the Edge if 50% of the "fat" had been trimmed, as you say. I tend to agree. Then it would have been a single album. Someone had put on youtube their own edited version of TFTO that was about 45 minutes long and done a really good job. It really was a night and day improvement.
My BIG 5 of these: 1. Animals by Pink Floyd 2. Yes Album 3. Fear of a Blank Planet 4. Tales From Topographic 5. Foxtrot but gosh it should be Close to the Edge haha.. ✌🏼🎧 And den.. 6. Close to the Edge 7. Dark Side 8. Pawn Hearts 9. Blackwater Park 10. Sell England but gosh it could be In Absentia 😅
rushhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh caress of stell🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
@@the_prog_nerd Just out of curiosity; where DID the list come from ? I too was surprised by no ELP, given your previously stated love of their stuff. Did you consider at any point adding or subtracting albums?
@@andrewhoag6167 it was probably just someone's list on Tiermaker, listing the last 50 Prog albums they checked out or some sort. It does seem pretty random with the titles. Also the fact I don't believe there were any albums from the 80's in there.
