Nice tier list. I love Caravan, Gong, Camel, Kansas, Gentle Giant, Nektar, VDGG, PFM, Le Orme, Banco, Klaatu (very Beatle-esque), Renaissance, etc, a lot of Krautrock and underground Italian bands as well, all their 70's albums are very good, you know. I still didn't get Magma after years of trying to like them. I love this bands but get bored of Pink Floyd, Rush, Yes, Genesis, ELP, King Crimson, Alan Parsons, Styx, Supertramp, because people plays them and talk about them always, all the time on social media and youtube, that's boring after years and years of that same thing on and on, just like when people only talks about Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Guns N' Roses, Metallica, Foo Fighters, Marilyn Manson, Queen, AC/DC, Limp Bizkit, KoRn, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, or Yngwie Malmsteen. * I prefer Sepultura's early albums (1986-1993) before Roots (that's one of my least favorites like Bestial Devastation EP, Roorback or Dante XXI) and like some with Derrick Green like Against, The Mediator, Machine Messiah, or Quadra. I like a few Max Cavalera's Soulfly albums. Nailbomb was a great project.

Nektar and Kansas are highly recommended. For Nektar, Remember The Future and A Tab In The Ocean are good starting points. Kansas, their first 6 albums are awesome, but for their biggest prog album, thats their self titled debut. The last 2 tracks, Apercu and Death Of Mother Nature Suite, are just magical.

Hi Niamh !! I liked your video!! A young girl who knows a lot of progressive rock especially the seventies (the best phase), uauh!!. I would put Jethro Tull in the S, Camel in the A, Rush in the A, and the other stuff in general I agree. Genesis, King Crimson, and Pink Floyd are outstanding!! The best progressive rock albums ever for me are: Selling England by The Pound, Foxtrot, Fragile, Aqualung, The Dark Side Of The Moon, Animals, Trilogy, In The Court Of The Crimson King, Larks Tongues In Aspic, Red, Moonmadness, Free Hand. If you don't mind can I give you some suggestions (as a much older person who has loved rock music since the early teens)??!! for old groups: Barclay James Harvest (Try the seventies albums, not much the 80s), Manfred Mann's Earth Band (all the seventies albums and early eighties, fantastic!!), Procol Harum (not all prog but some albums are), Focus (seventies great Dutch band), Premiata Forneria Marconi (aka PFM) (Italian band, perhaps the best Italian prog rock group), Strawbs (UK folk-prog rock), Gryphon (UK medieval folk prog rock). Bands still playing and formed this century or very near the end of the XX century: Wobbler (Norwegian band), The Flower Kings (Swedish Band), Agussa (Swedish band) Big Big Train (UK band), Spock's Beard (American band), Agusa (Swedish band). See you!!

ELP are like Marmite…not because you either love them or hate them, but whether you like them or not depends very much on how thickly you spread it. Too much it makes you sick. Camel, Caravan, Yes, Genesis, Tull are all S Tier for me.

Great list. I highly recommend you listen to the first 5 Kansas albums, you'll really enjoy them. Their debut and self titled album Kansas is great. Song For America has some great epic tracks like "Song for America", Lamplight Symphony" and Incomudro-Hymn to the Atman". Masque is great, the song "The Pinnacle" is a masterpiece. Leftoverture is one of the great Progressive Rock albums of all time in my opinion "Carry on Wayward Son" was a big hit for them but rest of the songs are even better. Point of Know Return is excellent the songs are little shorter but the whole album is really good. They have other good albums too but these 5 are the go to albums for me. First time seeing your show good job.

Nice to see Renaissance included! I see such lists often. Two of the very best '70's bands (for me anyways) are always missing, maybe because UK audiences never embraced them (I'm in California). I'd include Horslips and Strawbs on any list of progressive musicians.

The Moody Blues should've been on the list as well. Also, give 'LeftOverture' by Kansas a listen. And BTW, begin with track #2 ("The Wall") as track #1 ("Carry On Wayward Son") has been overplayed to death for decades on classic rock radio.

A short and "classic" list but it is just a bit of the point of the prog iceberg, i see also that you still didn´t dig enough on the Italian(a world of their own) and Escandinavian prog for example, so i leave you some names for you to listen, i am sure you will like, from Italy there are so many and many of them with only one or two records, i leave here just a few, Area, Locanda delle fate, Semiramis, Osanna, Moseo Rosenbach, Arti e mestieri, Quella vechia locanda, Balleto di Bronzo, from Escandinavia Anglagard, Anekdoten, Wobbler, Arabs from aspic, Jordsjo, Ring van mobius, The chronicles of Father Robin, lars Froislie, from France, Shylock, Ange, from Germany Pell mell, Novalis, Triumvirat, Frumpy, from Spain Crack, Triana, Iceberg, Gotic, from Canada Sloche, from USA Cathedral, Babylon, Hands, Yezda Urfa, from Portugal, Tantra, Jose Cid(10 000 anos), and this is just a litle tip of the prog world you can discover, so enjoy the ride

I can highly recommend Kansas's classic albums like Leftoverture, Point of No Return, and Song for America. Kansas back in their prime delivered the proggy complexity and virtuosity, and they could rock really hard. They are really good beyond just the hits. When I got to see them live during the 90's and 2000's, they were fantastic in concert.

A solid B on these valiant efforts, but a solid A+ on your intelligent choice of genres. As they are all technically proficient, weight has to confer upon pioneers of the form, which was pretty well complete by 1974. King Crimson, Early Yes, Pink Floyd, PFM, Moody Blues, Zappa, Sgt. Pepper, Gong, Early Genesis, Strawbs, Gryphon, VDGG and Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull all deserve a place at the high table. Most of the others, if honest, will concur, generally, if threatened with having to listen to Nickleback or Ye. ELP also deserves a seat at the high table, although it was long fashionable to poke fun. "Pictures at an Exhibition" alone, puts them there, just as "Close to the Edge" and "Awaken" and "Tales" put Yes firmly there. Rush strikes me as pretenders, and that voice is like nails on a chalkboard. I was told that 2112 was their "Close to the Edge" but so far, I don't hear it. It seems late to the game, historically.

Good music is good music . I try not to limit my listening choices by giving it a category . I have always thought that Yes was the best , full stop , but Rush was only three guys. Jethro Tull was so diverse , but Todd Rundgren broke so many barriers with some of his work . I've listened to , and loved Zappa , and I'm not even sure if he has a category. Music is music . Good music is good music , and great music is so precious it should never be L I M I T E D !

I have no argument with that. I'm not much of a Rush fan so that'll be my only quibble. Down with Rush! 🤣 I like Yes more but I probably would have put them in the A category also. The only change I would have made was Jethro Tull would be in my S section. And do get to Nektar. They're a little more harder edged than PMF. They can get to Jethro Tull levels of prog rocking hardness and the early albums mix psychedelia into it. PMF has folkish/classical guitar parts and if you love mellotron you'll enjoy almost everything up to Jet Lag.

Have heard them and at first I was hopeful, but then I came to realise that the more I heard of them all I was hearing was every trick in the Rush catalogue. Even worse is the fact that they lift complete themes, riffs and ideas and if Rush weren't the super nice guys they are then they could probably use for plagiarism.
