Out of nowhere caught this bracket series, and it's wonderful. Did ~25 years writing about musicians, and one of my favorite moments was doing a feature on drum techs, and talked with a gentleman named Lorne "Gump" Wheaton (Journey, VH, Rush). It went so well that I somehow got the opportunity to fly to YYZ and do the first interview Neil Peart had done since his family tragedies (R30 tour). Later on got to spend a day with the crew and set up his drums for the Snakes & Arrows tour. Fourteen-year old me still doesn't believe it. Huge respect to you, your work, and the great job you're doing of telling the story. Most people don't get how difficult this is, whether chronicling it, playing it, or setting it up and tearing it down. Peace.
@@TankTheTech hey tank, I've been a drummer and guitarist since 97..drums and 2003.. guitarist, I really would like to get into this kind of work, I live in Vegas, how would I go about getting some good contacts to do this, I've played in rock/metal/country bands over the years, but don't have any connections to production managers or people hiring roadies anymore.
@@GryHen-pg9iynone of that matters, connections is all that matters, asking RU-vidrs is not what’s going to get your job, going out their and talking to set guys will get you connections
This series was very interesting behind the scenes look at touring bands. The majority of us music fans only get to experience the performance we see on stage. Most of us forget or are not aware of everyone else that is involved with the experience of seeing a live music performance, so this was invaluable to me to remember this aspect of seeing a live show. Thank you for doing this.
Seriously. This little series was not only heaps of fun to watch, but it was also super informative whilst remaining respectful and discreet. Loved it! 🤘
Right on man. That says a lot about the good folks in the country genre. (and this is coming from a metal head purist, but as a guitar player I love all genres. Very cool that the country folks treated you like that. I'm a Wisconsin dairy farm boy that grew listening to George Jones and Conway Twitty, and now I've grown into Slayer and Machine Head. Love it all. Congrats bro)
The Dustin Lynch choice is no surprise to me after listening to your road tales of both bands. We (road dogs) know that the truth is, you don't even hear the music after the 3rd or 4th show. Our relationship with the tour isn't about how big the band or venues are, it's all about the experiences with the band and fellow crew. It's also about the struggles, adventures, and the joys that come with being a band of roving gypsies that fall into the tunnel of *_"Where are we today?"_* And until you actually experienced this, you can't truly explain it. But you've done a great job here bro. I'm not sure I could pick only one as my favorite ... and for *so* many reasons! While I'm not really into the hard metal you review (it's just not my thing), I've subscribed and set the bell. I'm looking forward to more of your road story content. There's a link to my website in the "about" section of my nearly empty channel if you'd like to see some of my voodoo. I've been out of the game while taking care of my mum until she passed. I'm looking to get back out, but Bobnet is barron (for me, so far) I'm seeking a band doing album cycles. As you pointed out in this mini-series, the industry is still trying to correct itself, and I'm not having much luck so far. Something will come along; it always does. Love the vibe of your channel.
I was friends in the '90s with Roger Capps, who was Pat and Neil's original bass player. He left the band in 1984, but was there for the heyday. (Things like the early MTV hits and playing gigs like the Us Festival.) He said touring the world with them was like touring with family, and he remained friends with them for years after.
Thanks for sharing your experiences! For me one of the most interesting topics I've ever seen on RU-vid. Awesome! At the beginning I didn't think it would be Dustin. But the way you explained it makes perfect sense. I could listen for hours!
I stumbled across your channel and I’m glad I did. I really enjoyed this series. I’m mostly a country musician, I even rodeo’d back in my younger days but hard rock is usually what’s playing in my vehicle or ear buds. Awesome series. I’ve been watching your other videos. Your now one of my favorite RU-vidrs.
Love that the winner isn't from a genre of music that you normally gravitate towards. Thank you for sharing, it has been great listening to all of your experiences!
Neil Giraldo deserves a lot more credit and admiration as a musician and guitarist than he gets. I remember him winning a Guitar Player reader's poll, for (I think it was) best new guitarist. (This was probably in 1980 or 1981.) The problem was the EVH came along about the same time, and just destroyed every other guitar hero for a while. Everyone wanted to sound like Eddie, and guitar fans only paid attention to Eddie and his imitators. It's unfortunate because so many other great players got overshadowed by Van Halen's playing.
Thank you so much for these videos which I watched back to back. I’ve always been fascinated with the road crews and that started for me when I was 10 years old and my mom took me to Cincinnati to see Molly Hatchet on the flirting with disaster tour with the outlaws opening in 1979. I watched the crews as we got there early and I was as fascinated with them as I was with my favorite band Molly Hatchet who literally blew the roof off of the place. Little did the fifth grader me know that I would grow up to be an obsessed Bluegrass picker. I could ramble here forever but I subscribed and look forward to more of your videos, thank you!
Loved hearing the stories about touring with these artists. You are living the life I wish I would have taken up. So happy for you and keep putting out the great videos!! Thanks man.
The only thing I wish you would've shared is an Eddie Van Halen story. I'm curious about any sort of interactions you had with him. Other than that, I'm very satisfied with this trilogy series. Lots of amazing incite & lessons to be learned.
I would have sold my soul to the Devil to be able to go on the road and tour with Van Halen. Nothing could be better for me - then touring with the Halen. Nothing. Cool vid. I like this kind of stuff.
@@ARUSApacecarHAMPTON No. Prolly not. I would have died of excess.... especially the Women.... LOL I'm not the best partier out there.. LOL... so yeah. Prolly would have bit the bullet... on tour with those guys - band & crew! LOL
I’m with you! Even though there are 1 million Eddie Van Halen videos here on RU-vid I was still hoping he would launch into some stories about Ed. I guess I just can never get enough.
Great series man, glad the gods of RU-vid (aka the “algorithm”) fed me your channel! Would love to see a head-to-head elimination bracket of your WORST tours! Lol
I go to see Brad Paisley when he's on tour. I remember Parmalee & Dustin Lynch. Both were great openers for his shows. Enjoyed your dissection of the different tours. They couldn't go on without the worker bee roadies!
I thought the final would be Pat vs Dustin, with Pat winning, just by the way you've been talking about them in this series and in other videos. Love the stories!
I thought that the winner would be one out of these three: Pat Benatar, Van Halen or Dustin Lynch. When VH won against PB I thought "Here we see the winner..." but well, Dustin Lynch is worthy of taking the top spot. I really, really loved this video series! ***** Thank you so much for sharing all these personal, funny and touching stories! Greetings from Germany! 🤘😎🤘
Tank: Not a lot of regular people really know who he is... Me: That muted raking riff he does on the Telecaster in A Little Too Late beat me sideways as a teen when that video came out.
YES!!! I commented after the last video that my bar buddies and I had each thrown in fifty bucks and had bet on this bracket...and somehow ( actually because of Lifehouse ) it's winner, winner, fucking roast beef dinner for me! Can you believe out of 26 people, only 2 of us picked Dustin for the win? Anyway, thanks..and if I ever get to Nashville, I owe you a landscaping job ( been doing it for 25 years ) on the house...oh, congrats on the E.C. tour, expecting lots of good pics😀
Hey Tank found this little piece, thought it to be very well done, but for me the best one you've done so far is the one on bus rental. That was an eye opener. I'm new to teching, but spent over 30 years in the transportation business, and I find it amazing you can't find busses! They are everywhere, here where I live. Would love to share some correspondence with you about that subject. Maybe your background in Merch, and touring, and my background in the transportation industry could develop into something. Who knows?
I go to a lot of concerts. It's my escape. To be in the room with and have the music you love just pass through you is somewhat spiritual, but It's easy to forget in that moment about all the people working behind the curtain to make 4 or 5 guys under the lights successful each night. I love hearing these behind the scenes stories. Maybe it's a bit on the negative side, but would you consider a "worst tour moments" series? Not necessarily a "worst tour/band" thing because it could cast a negative light on some cool people, but perhaps just select situations from tours that people might not let you forget! 😆
I was low key wishing Dustin would win. I’m a metal head that at some point got into country music and even now I still listen to some country from time to time
Thank you for the series Tank! I enjoyed it. I always dreamed of going out on the road with Pantera back in the early 90s and then having to have my body shipped home after about a week or so. Haha. I look forward to your Eskimo Callboy sotries! (Yes, I still call them Green Jello too).
Great story abt Pat benatar and nick giraldo…..they were hiring a guitar player so were auditioning. I heard an interview with her and she said he walked in to play and she thought to herself….”please let him be good, please let him be good…..”. Still rocking!
Pat Benatar sounds like really awesome crew. Dustin Lynch also. I even found them on Spotify, and its not so bad (I am black/death core vocalist and fan :P )
heh I got to do a show with Alan Jackson. I worked at the theater he and Deana Carter were performing at. This was like 1999-2000? Fortunately for me, I have background in literally every aspect of putting on shows. This wasn't my first rodeo, so to speak. I got the beloved 'purple shirt' 😂 which basically said anybody can grab me to help with anything. At least that's how I remember it. Got offered a job as a roadie after teardown. I turned it down because I was in school as a theater major at the time, and this job was tied to my classes. I should have jumped ship and left with them. This wasn't the first time I've had this happen, either. Back when I first started college, I was a guitar major, (yeah, you can major in guitar) and got offered to go out on the road, and was offered some good opportunities to be a session musician in Nashville. Again, turned it down because of school. One funny thing I learned from the Alan Jackson show was how much roadies out of Nashville loved sushi 🍥 😂
Orbit Culture just announced their US tour with In Flames! Green Bay 9.20 for this Swede combined with Bear week for my Packers! Louisville 9.23 for you I guess!
I had a feeling we will never, despite the title of the series (insert a mock indigant "Clickbait!" here), get the actual worst one. Not really complaining though, it's way better to listen to people sharing fond memories!
tank PLEASE do a reaction to Ana by Darko US. Has a feature from Taylor Barber of Left to Suffer. Band has been under the radar for a while now and they’re insanely good. Imo they just dropped their best song yet.
Ive always thought pat benatar played for my team. You have floored me with this whole husband ordeal. When my girlfriend gets home from work in the morning, i hope i get to shock her and she doesn't already know lol
We get it Tank...freeze you're the coolest and the man and you used to think you....wait used to think you knew it alll.....just kidding you're a hard worker with a great attitude! Thanks for taking us "behind the curtain"!
Hey Tank, I'm sure you know about this but In Flames released a new song and it's kind of a return to form of their older kind of sound. Love to see your reaction
"Old school [country] names like Garth Brooks and Alan Jackson and Travis Tritt ..." Ouch, Dude! How ancient are you trying to make those of us beyond a certain age feel? Cuz I got friends in old places ...
Maybe you'll never see this comment - but I am curious - where does Electric Callboy rank on this now that you've done that? My guess is based on the fact that it was a summer tour, it doesn't go past round 2, despite how much fun those guys seem to be. Seems like you "found" yourself more in those longer-lasting tours.
It would be interesting to know if you know Dell Furrano? He is the king of R&R merch?- He has been with Winterland back in the days when Bill Grahm was alive and still at least of the last 10 years that I know of.
Id have to agree, stating that actually just got me to unsubscribe as well. No proclaimed "metalhead" would choose a country artist over van halen, stories aside.
Nevermind, you answered my culture question on this video! I had a feeling and I agree. I don't care for that part of country culture either. It's regressive.
Bro I’ve been around confederate flags all my life and it has nothing to do with race, despite what people think. And I enjoy MULTIPLE music genres. Even hip hop (OutKast 4 Life)
Your wasting your time trying to inform this.i just heard this podcast too and I really liked it up until the homophope and racist bs. I believe we are a live and let live people we just don't put any group on a pedestal and kiss their ass because we're afraid of being canceled.
Not sure why the heck you would slam Trump supporters!! Touring with country artists that are mostly conservatives and you slam people that support that is just sad man.
Pro America 🇺🇸 may not be your thing. But you will be at a point where you come to a fence to step over. But this fight may be at your front door knocking when the freedoms are being taken away slowly but surely. And you will favor your freedom and take not granted for nothing. Just a FYI..
Dude is a complete piece of garbage. Typical liberal; “I saw a lot of terribly racist homophobic things… like… like… rebel flags and Trump flags. I guess he appreciates the stench of a couple of guys buttfu
@@johnh2349 right. Some of the guys don't get it. People get offended so easy. The spirit of offense is inside these people. Can't call someone by their gender anymore? Mrs. Mr. Him/her. Pronouns are woke-nouns!
