Pete, I'm feeling a bit emotional as I write this. Brad Delp's death by suicide in 2007 hit me really hard. Not only did I worship that man's amazing vocals - at his peak, he had a full 6-octave vocal range and is still, in my opinion, one of the ten greatest Rock singers ever - but I actually got to see him live with the band, in the Summer of 1997 at the Jones Beach Amphitheatre in Wantagh NY. That's right; I saw Boston in 1997, and it was fucking amazing. Both Brad Delp and Fran Cosmo were there, and the show was just as amazing as you'd think it would be. As testament to how humble the great Brad Delp was, on the first song break (after song #2, I believe), Brad Delp introduced Fran Cosmo as "my vocal savior" as Brad was down to maybe a 4-octave vocal range with Fran Cosmo still at his 6-octave vocal peak. Subsequently, they did "More Than A Feeling" with Fran Cosmo singing all the high notes with Brad Delp jubilantly pointing to him with a big smile on his face, basically telling us all, "See what I mean by that man being my vocal savior?? 😊" I miss Brad Delp SO much. I really wish he had sought help rather than making the sad, ultimate decision to take his own life. 😥 Suicide is NOT painless. And Brad Delp left a lot of sad fans in his wake. I know I'm one of them. One of my all-time favorite singers in history, and he will not be forgotten. 🔥
Bob Schneider I saw them on the same tour in Bonner Springs, KS at the old Sandstone Amphitheater. Great show. Same scenario between Delp and Cosmo. Never thought I’d be able to see them live. Thrill of my concert-going lifetime. Delp was still on top of his game, and clearly humble as ever. $25.
Bob Schneider I've seen Boston 4 times, twice in '87 Third Stage Tour, once in '03, and the most memorable in '04 which I took my son to. I won tickets off the radio and it came with a meet and greet, got to meet Tom and Brad was very cool got an autographed Greatest hits CD! I live in NH close to where Brad lived. I knew him, met him several times, a couple of times were after hours in a restaurant owned by a close friend of Brad's, which I worked at the time. Brad was a very private person. He was known as The Nicest Guy in Rock 'n Roll. Unfortunately, his personality was the type where he played peacemaker within the band and he let a lot of the troubles and problems bottled up inside and it ate away at him. There are many things that led to his decision to take his life, it was not just one thing. I've heard that he suffered from depression and even before Boston he had thought of suicide a few times. Brad's suicide was totally shocking, it hit me very hard also, as it probably did most of Boston's fans. Your right he should have sought professional help. Seeing how much Brad's passing affected you and being a fan of Fran's early years' vocals, I was wondering if you were aware of Goudreau's solo album from 1980? If not you need to listen to it. Brad and Fran share vocals on it, Sib on Drums and of course Barry on guitar. Many of the songs could pass as Boston tunes, and are very good. One song was a hit and was often mistaken as Boston when it received airplay back in the day, "Dreams". Remember this is before Orion the Hunter and RTZ. It came out shortly after Don't Look Back, during the years Scholz put the band on pause due to CBS/Boston lawsuit. check out the album if you have not heard it, it's awesome! everybody knows the first is pure genius but i think the second and third are dramatically underrated simply because they're so totally outshined by the first.
Boston was the first album my dad ever played for me when I was around 5 years old. 19 years and about 700+ vinyls owned later...it all started with Boston. Truly a legendary band and that debut is one of the best. Also, I couldn’t agree more with “A Man I’ll Never Be”. It’s easily one of the most underrated songs ever.
Scholz' perfectionism was perhaps the main reason why the first album is such an outstanding piece... and a handicap immediately afterwards with the wait for Don't Look Back, which is still a solid release. Afterwards, diminishing returns- nowhere to go after such a phenomenal debut.
Hi Jose, yes agree although i would go so far as to say the first 2 albums to me could be "bookends" The third album is still not bad though it took years to come out with a 36minute only play time?
(1) Boston - One of the greatest debut albums of all time. (2) Third Stage - Probably my favorite top to bottom, but I’ve got to acknowledge how groundbreaking the debut is. (3) Walk On - Probably their most underrated album. (4) Don’t Look Back (5) Corporate America - Their first relatively weak album - but it still contains some solid material. (6) Life Love & Hope - There are a couple of great new songs here, but the album as a whole has the feel of a demo rather than the polished output of a band - or someone with the studio chops of Tom Scholz. This album also gets demerit points for reprising three so-so tracks from Corporate America.
I agree as well. Third Stage is my favorite too. Constant airplay of tracks from the first album keep me from having to listen to it as a whole. Walk On is a comparative masterpiece to the musical landscape of the 1990s. When that came out it gave me hope that good music from other bands was still possible. (Turns out I was wrong on that though) 😋
RIP Brad Delp... Boston was my first favorite band... That delay between the second and third albums killed me but I saw them live in Worcester MA for the first time and loved every minute. Seeing them live ever since has been amazing even though there albums have gotten worse and worse through the years
Met and saw Brad Delp quite a few times when I was a kid in the '90s, he and his Beatles cover band had a practice space across the street from my dad's shop in Malden,MA, so I'd hear and see him all the time....True class act, super nice guy...
I wish more people would talk about Third Stage, such a great album with some outstanding guitar work. I also agree Something About You is under-appreciated track. Great video.
Let's be honest. If it wasn't for *Amanda* (kick off Hit Single) after the 8 year hiatus (lawsuit with CBS).Third Stage would of died fast. Along with the band.
@Scott Leoski - yes it is. But I was in high school when *Boston* album came out. Was in the military when *Don't Look Back* was released. Was a civilian when *Third Stage* came out. Was so EXCITED when it came out. *Amanda* was a great song. Rest of the album didn't live up to *Amanda.* In my opinion.
45 years later the production on the first album still amazes me!! No album has matched it!! And the songwriting, vocals and instruments were largely all done by Tom and Brad other than the drums if I remember correctly!!!
It's a sonic masterpiece. I was in college when it came out and I'll never forget a bunch of us sitting in a friend's room in the dark with that album cranked up, doing nothing but listening. Chills.
Some of the Pink Floyd and Yes albums from the 70's are the only albums I can think of that had the same attention to detail as the Boston debut. Incredible production.
You'd be correct basically Boston is was Tom Scholtz and Brad Delp. He had to gather a bunch of friend musicians when they had to perform live for their record contract signing with Epic because a band did not exist, it was all Tom overdubbing everything in his basement Studio. In fact, only one song on the album has the full band on it that they recorded for Epic's Producer at their LA studio. A sort of diversion, while Tom finished enhancing the previously recorded demos at his home studio. Tom ended up splitting the producer royalties with the producer, for allowing this, Epic originally wanted the whole thing produced by their seasoned producer at their studio.
The Launch from Third Stage is the track I used to test Stereo Systems it has the greatest levels on an equalizer I have ever seen! Tom is the greatest Sound engineer I think that has ever lived.
I'm from Boston originally and always was proud of this band. I do think Best debut Rock album of all time or at least in the top three. Every single song is a killer song. Every single song should have been a pop hit a rock hit.
without question, their debut album is one of the best debut albums ever. Not a bad track on it. Great songs and killer melodies. And of course, the incredible vocals of Brad Delp. A home run right out of the gate.

My oldest brother got a black 55 Chevy. Installed a eight track stereo sound system second to none. First eight track was of course Bostons first. I was the youngest of three and sat in the middle of the back seat while we were cruising. I've never heard a more perfect first album in my life. He wore out more Boston eight tracks first recording than anyone I know. Tom Shultz sir - You are a genius hands down. Brad Delp-The most incredible voice and talent that ever walked into a studio. It takes an entire rotation of people to do what Brad Delp handled alone. You hear Bostons first two albums and you seem to have the best day. Thank you Tom Schultz for making my youth so much fun.
Pete, you are working your noble parts off!!! I know there is quarantine, but you uploading videos as if there is truly no tomorrow. On behalf of all of us music fans, thank you. I agree totally on your ranking, perhaps with Boston is hard not to. The debut album was THE soundtrack of my youth (I am 55 now). I consider it one of the 10 most important records I have ever listened to. Keep up the good work and stay safe.
19 years old stationed at Ft Campbell KY - went to the mall music store ( maybe a record town) in Clarksville TN and they were selling tons of the debut and had it playing in the store - a new band was exciting-was good times man !!
I haven't seen Sea of Tranquility's ranking the Boston albums yet. I googled "Boston Albums Ranked" and went DIRECTLY to Sea of Tranquility because I love watching his commentaries on rock bands.
This just shows how good that first album was. Aside from the song don’t look back, every other memorable Boston song is on the first album. And just because of that first album Tom Schultz is able to release an album under the Boston name every eight or 10 years and it will still sell really well just because of the strength from that first album. One of the greatest albums of all time.
Tom Scholz is a guitar god, keyboard god, bass god, and a production/engineering god. One of the most talented people in the history of rock music imo.
He is overrated and a control freak....6 albums in 40 plus years....i could understand if they were good but after the first 2....his albums are just avg.
@@randytaylor220 Lol he absolutely is a virtuoso guitar player. His solos are not easy to play. They're actually pretty technical. Most accomplished guitar virtuosos will tell you that.

Well done Pete. Tbh I've only really listened to the classic Boston (their first 3 albums). Never really got into the later stuff. The debut is one of the greatest albums ever produced IMO. I never tire of listening to it. I'll bet 100s of years from now it will still be revered for the musical masterpiece it is.
Few bands made such an immediate and huge impact on the '70s rock scene as Boston. As a kid of that decade, they were part of my youth. Worth searching for that's related to Boston: 1985's Orion the Hunter and 1992's RTZ.
Their first album was one of the earliest records I ever bought and I have owned it in some format ever since. I'm a huge fan along with their various solo projects. RTZ and Orion The Hunter still get lots of play in my car. 6) Corporate America (The songs seemed a bit forgettable to me.) 5) Life, Love & Hope (About half of this was really good, with the rest being servicable, if forgettable. 4) Walk On (A pretty good album. I was really into the RTZ album tha came out around the same time and gave that most of my attention.) 3) Don't Look Back (Nearly perfect.) 2) Third Stage (This is a HUGELY nostalgic record for me. I love everything about it.) 1) Boston (I've listened to this album hundreds of times and still enjoy the hell out of it.) Thanks, Pete! funny you should mention Curly Smith, I just happened to be listening to early 70s band Jo Jo Gunne, who Curly Smith played for. If anyone wants to hear an unbelievable, hard rockin song with an incredible jammin rave-up ending, check out the song "Rhoda' from their 2nd album. It features an incredible little drum solo from Curly, one of the first times I heard a double kick drum bashing that wasn't a jazz-fusion drummer, check it out.

Basically Pete’s ranking mirrors mine. Debut is a front-to-back listen and probably in my Top 10 albums I listen to most often even though I was two when it came out! Third Stage is when I stopped listening but I still want to see them live.
On a Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters run......literally everyone I'm into was into them or did covers of their songs or somehow was influenced by them...back in the day I kept reading that and then when I read how Keef met Mick at the train station and how he thought he hit the jackpot because Jagger had sacred Chuck and Muddy albums from America under his arm and how ecstatic he was I started checking them out and it didn't disappoint....seriously got into both big time.....I'm a huge fan ...a lot of my peers back then were like that's old...but I loved it....like I was let in on something super cool....thanks Pete....

Third Stage is my #1. When TS was released I was in high school and working at Walmart. I remember when the cassettes first arrived and unpacked. I made the purchase as soon as my shift was over. I'm not a big ballad guy, but A Man I'll Never Be (from DLB) and Hollyann are easily two of my all time faves.
Hitch a Ride is probably my favorite Boston song. Those guitar solos are executed so perfectly. Every note of the song is wedged in my brain. Needless to say, the first album was perfect. It has it all. Don't Look Back was very good but, alas, the first one was impossible to top.
As for my favorite Boston studio albums, I only ever had the first 4, and I order those albums - *Boston, Don't Look Back, Third Stage,* and *Walk On* - in the same exact order as you. On this, therefore, I agree with you 100%, except that you like *Walk On* better than I did. I did play the entire album right after I bought it in 1996, and I would never play it again. Like you, I liked a couple songs on it. Unlike you, though, I don't even remember the "Walk On" medley, as I had basically checked-out by that point. I remember the first couple of songs being somewhat decent, but that was about it. I really could not get into the rest of the album, and even the first two songs I didn't think were all that great. I had already known that Fran Cosmo had officially replaced Brad Delp as lead singer, which had made me somewhat hesitant to buy the album, which is why I ended-up waiting 2 years post-release to buy it. Still, I had remembered Fran Cosmo from *Orion The Hunter* - I *LOVED* (and still love) "So You Ran," and really wanted to hear what Fran had just done with Boston. Verdict: His vocals were great, but the songs weren't. Too bad. I really wanted to like the album, but I couldn't. *Boston* is one of the ten greatest albums ever made, and is probably *_the_* greatest debut album ever made. *Don't Look Back* is a distant 2nd. It had 3 great songs on it (title track, "Feelin' Satisfied," and "A Man I'll Never Be"), but - as Tom Scholz himself said - it was a rush-job that was too short by at least one song. Fortunately, Tom Scholz's notorious perfectionism produced an incredible album, *Third Stage,* that was an extremely close third in the Boston canon, even as it came-out 8 years after the sophomore release. Unfortunately, said perfectionism came to be the bane of his existence, as it took _another_ 8 years to produce *Walk On* which, simply put, isn't a very good album. I've never had either of their 2 remaining studio albums, but I will take your word on them. If anything, I'll check-out some songs on them on RU-vid. Rock On, Pete. 😎
We would be remiss if we didn't acknowledge Tom Sholtz's influence in rock music. The Rockman he invented can be heard in lots of music from that period and after. It is evident in Pink Floyd's A Momentary Lapse of Reason. You can hear it in lots of things. UPDATE: 6 days later. Since watching this ranking, I have been stuck listening to Third Stage non-stop. Tom Scholz's orchestra of guitars with the help of his Rockman invention is just incredible. I had forgotten how good that record was. It has been so long since I heard it straight thru. Great songs there. Cool the Engines, Hollyanne, Can'tcha Say. Good stuff. Thanks for bringing this little gem back to me.

So many things of Boston rated in my general top 5 of things. Band, album, guitarist, vocalist (Brad obviously), character (Tom obviously, dig the way he is showing celebrity status and record co the finger and his love of music), instrumental songs, album covers. The most underrated artists but I think out of choice if that even makes sense. Not really hunting the financial and fame prize. Love it.
I grew up in the 80s so Third Stage is somewhat nostalgic for me. I got the (record) single AMANDA as a kid which I still have to this day. I love this album. I especially love Hollyann.
I was sadden to learn when Brad Delp passed away. I remember his group "RTZ-Return To Zero" and I loved that album. Did not know Delp was with Boston. Gonna have to check those out. I bv stopped listening to Bostons' "Third Stsge". I'm an 80s guy. Im getting into the 70s rocl scene here. Missed out on that asesome decade. I was born in 76. Great list, brother.
I know most people don't agree but Third Stage is my favorite Boston album. I think the songwriting matured a lot on that album both in the lyrics and composition. I get really emotional during the climax of Hollyanne. Otherwise my list is identical to yours, I'd just move Third Stage to the top.
Actually, Amanda leaked out in late '84 about 2 years before Third Stage's release. I have a copy of the song in question. It sounds very much like the finished version, but with a different mix and different drum parts. Same vocal. Here is the rumored source info back in the day . . . In late 1984 a raw demo of the song was leaked to radio stations via a syndicated satellite feed. Despite the poor audio quality the first new studio Boston song to be heard in 6 years became the most requested song at AOR (Album-oriented rock) stations that played the bootleg. Here is what I have heard and believe to be true. . . It was WBCN Boston where Tom Scholz and Fran Sheehan were both very friendly with all of the on-air staff. I doubt it is was leaked but most likely given to the station on cassette. Did other stations copy it off air from BCN, hence the poor sound quality, perhaps. I do know that there were members of Boston, J Geils band, Aerosmith, The Cars and several other Boston area bands that would hang out at WBCN and they would bring demos of working songs and those were aired occasionally. The version I heard and taped off the radio is nearly the same as the released version (NOT a raw mix as mentioned by some). It's a bit less polished, perhaps for the better, with fewer vocal overdubs during the choruses. Depending on the stations you listened to depends on the quality of the song. I live in NH about 50 mins from Boston and listened to WBCN "The Rock of Boston" daily.

The idea of Tom Scholz finding time to build Hyperspace pedals, play all the instruments and literally splice together the debut demo in a tiny basement while working full time as an engineer at Polaroid is mind blowing. Obviously the dude didn't sleep. When seeing then in Camden NJ in 95, Brad shared vocals with Fran what a great show,. then again in 97 Allentown Fairgrounds , sadly the day after Princess Dianna passed. An awesome outdoor show. Man I'll Never Be also one of my favorites, however didn't care for the slow live version of that song. Boston isn't Boston without Brad.
I pretty much agree with your list here. Here's my ranking: 1. Boston 2. Third Stage (I like this a lot!) 3. Don't Look Back 4. Walk On 5. Life, Love & Hope (I got rid of this, as I couldn't stand the bad production) I have never heard Corporate America, so I can't rank that, but I think you're pretty much right when it comes to this album.

Boston . . . The Platinum Basement Band!! One of my favorite bands. I actually like all their albums. Anyone who has not listened to Barry Goudreau's debut solo album back in 1980 when the Boston/CBS lawsuits were going on and Tom the perfectionist was taking 8 years in between album releases. Do yourself a favor you gotta listen to it. Has the Hit Dreams, that was frequently mistaken for Boston back in the day when it received radio airplay. There are quite a few songs on it that could easily pass for Boston and they're all good! The precursor to Orion the Hunter, and RTZ. CBS had frozen all royalties from the 1st 2 albums, trying to force the release of a third. Tom had to invent and market various guitar audio equipment, to fund money for Third Stage while fighting court battles with record company CBS and manager Paul Ahern, who was originally receiving songwriting royalties. The remaining band members were bored between Boston albums and also needing money released material without Tom Scholtz. Good review Pete. I would agree with your views but I would swap positions of Don’t Look Back and Third Stage. I’ve always thought Third Stage received a lot of unfair criticism and is a stronger release than its predecessor.

Great vid! I totally agree with your order. I wish Michael Sweet from Stryper would have stayed for the newest album. I think that his writing and vocals would have lifted that album up a bit.
One overlooked single that many of you may enjoy was the final Delp & Goudreau collaboration, Rockin' Away. Written in the summer of 2006, Barry and Brad wrote it in honor of the 30th anniversary of the 1st Boston album, in hopes it would rekindle Barry's relationship with the band, but it failed to do so. Barry released it In Oct of 2007 after Brad's Death. It is an awesome song, just as good as Dreams off of the Goudreau solo album. I remember being in college and marking on the calendar the date Third Stage was coming out. My friend and I drove to the nearest shopping mall to pick it up. I still remember that release and Iron Maiden's Seventh Son of a Seventh Son being the releases I had been most excited for as a young adult. Third Stage ended up being slightly disappointing, but still decent.
Do you recall that Somewhere In Time and Third Stage came out right at the same time? Start of 10th grade - my friend bought one and I got the other. Still love them both. The other thing I remember from that exact time was Cliff Burton dying. UGH.
I did not remember that SiT came out at the same time as Third Stage. I actually don't remember where I got SiT. I just remember the trip to the mall for Third Stage, and then a year or two later, working at an internship and having the release of Seventh Son being one of the only highlights of that semester!
Third Stage is a great album that you have to listen to several times to really get the vibe of good production it has .. I 2 3rd Boston albums are my my fav albums combined as the best ..The first is one is always going to be the standout with everyone.. Walk on is the second fav but it took a long time to get use to it,.
Don't Look Back was the first Boston album I heard in its entirety. Feelin' Satisfied is my absolute favorite from it and I was disappointed they didn't play it when I saw them back in '95. UNTIL THE ENCORE!! OH YEAH!!! I was loving it. And Something About You is probably my personal favorite from the debut with Rock and Roll Band a very close 2nd. You can't touch those first 3 Boston albums.
Walk On I feel is under rated. It has some of my favorite tracks. Also love Third Stage. Obviously the first album is the best, but there are great tracks across all the album's. If you say there isn't any good songs after the first album, you don't know Boston! Great job again Pete!
I just have the two top albums: Boston and Don't look back. For me they really are a tremendous band with an unmistakable style. I dig them a lot till today.
