Here’s a story to make you weep. David Coverdale used to live down the road from where I grew up in London in the early ‘80s. One day when I was around 14 I went into an electrical goods shop near me wearing a Whitesnake t-shirt. The owner was a very sweet Polish guy who seemed old to me but was probably only about 55. He said he had something for me and went out the back of the shop. He returned with an object that made my jaw drop to the floor. He had in his arms the statue from the cover of ‘Saints and Sinners’. “This is for you,” he said. I couldn’t believe it. Coverdale had given it to him as well as a band sweat shirt and he then passed them on to me. I imagine the statue was a promo item and that a few had been made, but at the time I reacted as if I’d been given the very one from the cover. Anyway, it proudly adorned my bedroom shelves for a while until I had a party while my parents were away (you can tell where this is going...) During said party, drink was taken. Lots of drink. Drink and Whitesnake statues don’t mix and at some point in the evening (morning?) it was smashed into a million pieces. If you’d heard my language at that moment, I was definitely more of a sinner than a saint...

It isn't just about the hair though, I think it has got more to do with a genre that never wanted to be mainstream becoming just that. All these goddamned ballads everywhere ! So many bad albums came out back then. I was so happy when I listened to Show No Mercy by Slayer for the first time ! And then Thrash was pussyfied too, Metallica and Anthrax being the guilty party in that.

Their creative output has been on hiatus since 1987 when Coverdale fired his whole band including the excellent John Sykes. They haven't released anything remotely iconic since 1987. Coverdale is the ultimate control freak and John Sykes doesn't want to work with him again after he was mistreated because Coverdale was jealous and insecure about losing the spotlight. I don't blame him either, John Sykes is too good a musician for Whitesnake. I like the Blue Murder album better than every Whitesnake album. I always thought Coverdale was a Robert Plant imitator and not unique like Rob Halford, Freddie Mercury or Bono as vocalists. Coverdale made the band solely about him, like putting only him on album covers and denying John Sykes the ability to tour their biggest album.

“Come An’ Get It is my favourite of the early Whitesnake albums. It’s down to the band’s performance and the consistency of the songs. Production’s good from Birchy too.” - Coverdale “Come An’ Get It is a great album. It’s the zenith of the ‘classic’ line-up. Ready An’ Willing is very good, the live album is pretty good, but overall Come An’ Get It takes the biscuit. Who knows? Ask the fans, really. Don’t ask me. I was perfectly happy with the way things changed later on as well. The 1987 album was great too. I’m very much on the fence when people say Whitesnake were crap after Saints An’ Sinners, or when they say they hate all the old blues stuff. I can enjoy a lot of it, right across the board.” - Neil Murray

Can't argue with your ranking. I would rank them pretty close to what you have with a few albums switching spots. I first heard of them when Slide It In came out but it was the 1987 album that made me love this band. I found out that David Coverdale was the singer for Deep Purple a few years later and I have to say after In Rock, Burn is my favorite Deep Purple album. Anyway, back to Whitesnake. After 1987 hit big all the previous albums started popping up in the record stores so it was fun picking those up and discovering how awesome Whitesnake really are! Love your work, Pete! Keep it up. P.S.-I would love to see your Werewolf video.

Another great ranking list. To hear you tell your love of this band reflects my own. I think I drudged through the snow to buy when the 87/self titled album came out too only I was living in the Midwest. But, my love of Whitesnake came from being a fan of Deep Purple. So the albums like "Ready and Willing" and "Come and Get it" with Lord and Paice in the band made me a fan. I originally bought "Slide it In" on a cassette and it was the perfect combination of their old school blues feel with the new heavy rock energy that Sykes and Cozy Powell would bring to the band. I originally saw the video for "Still of the Night" while I was visiting my sister and her family while I was on Spring break from college in 87 and I knew I had to have the album. I was in a huge Tommy Aldridge kick at the time and to see in the video solidified it. Obviously, I'm aware he didn't play on the album. But, I didn't care. Over the years, I still get people who give me a hard time about liking the band and those people who lump them in with the "hair" bands of the 80's. It's so refreshing to see videos like this and fans like you who appreciate them and the music for more than just "Here I Go Again" and "Is this Love".

Great recordstores in every city. In mid -70ties when I was around 13 a class mate introduced me to DP. Before that I had som LP´s with Elvis, and some great R&B from the 60ties. I was blown away. From that day heavy rock became my music for 3 decades. Now as 58 I listen to all kind of various music, but hey bro I am an expert on all of the guys from Purple, Rainbow, Whitesnake, AC/DC, Kiss Aeorosmith, Nazareth, Blue Öyster Cult, Thin Lizzy and for and example Judas Priest. All those bands that set example for later bands. One of my uncles drove me from Stockholm to Gothenburg in -76 and he constantly played "On Your Knees or on Your feet"-the classic double LP with BÖC. It was not possible to get around it. Love your passion and knowledge. Real nice to see your rankings and comments. Of course I disagree for one album to the next but hey that´s why we are here right? God Bless.

It was my 2nd ever concert and I remember it vividly still today. I never managed to see them again. While I had tickets for their show in 1987 they cancelled the gig some days before it actually happened and I never really got the chance to see them live again. But I am soooo glad I did in 1981. I like them stil until today but the Coverdale/Paice/Lord/Moody/Marsden/Murray line up was their best IMO. Have seen The Company Of Snakes with Moody/Marsden playing these songs live again however which was a great compensation for not being able to see DC with WS, but DC's vocals were missing of course. Therefore my favourite albums are Lovehunter/Come and get it/Saints&Sinners in no particular order.

My top 3 favorite albums from Whitesnake have always been: 1) Slide It In 2) Come And Get It 3) Ready and Willing. I could never get into the 1987 album, as much as I tried. It just didn't do anything for me, apart from 'Still of the night' and 'Here I go again'. Some people I knew loved it but not me.

Coverdale is really underestimated. He is an unbelievable songwriter, all the way through his career right up to Flesh and Blood. He always writes memorable hard rock numbers and beautiful ballads, deserves far more recognition for the nearly 50 years hes been in the business!

It always makes me laugh when David puts on that ridiculous accent, apparently when he talks to people he knew in the old days in the North East he goes back to his real voice.

I never have gotten tired of hearing "Still Of The Night". I also have a great memory of that song forever burned into my brain. 🥰It involved my girlfriend at the time, me when I was 17, "Still Of The Night", the 1987 album & the back seat of a new Mercedes my parents let me borrow that night. Even though "Slide It In" is my favorite Whitesnake album, "Still Of The Night" is my favorite song.

So in the summer or 1983 I was 18 and Slide It In came out. There was a place in Albany, NY called Worlds Records. Every Friday I would drive there to get whatever heavy rock metal record was released as an import and of course there was Kerrang mag. So that day I brought home Slide it In which was much anticipated. So it was taped off the LP and cranked out the windows of my 67 Firebird every day as loud as possible. A few weeks later maybe September I go and the manager knowing how much I love my rock grabs me and says “hey the new Snake with John Sykes is out and you need to hear it” so of course I had read that Sykes had joined but her was the remixed and re-recorded product here in my hands, I went home and listened. That night I taped it and went around to all my friends to have a listen. This was truly earth shattering stuff! Fond memories and my pals still mention to me how they remember me calling or visiting them to share the remix with Sykes. It’s funny how we have similar experiences from all over about these musicians and their work in our youth,

Hey, David Coverdale has always been one of my favorites, since his performance at Cal Jam , his purple years are superb... Whitesnake has been great ever since they began, I wished some of the lineups stayed around longer, the top three , are all great music “ Ready & Willing “ especially with Lord & Paice” on board ... check out David doing the unboxing of the deluxe set of “Slide it In” hilarious 🎤🥁🎸🎸🎹

Ain’t no love in the heart of the city. I prefer early ‘snake but love that DC & Co. is still bringing it. Caught them in ‘80 with Lord & Paicey when they blew Jethro Tull off the stage at MSG. Also saw them on The Purple Tour where it was wonderful hear DP Mk.IV numbers live. Love that you’re rocking the old logo tee, Pete! Top Five: Saints & Sinners Slide It In (UK version) Love Hunter ‘87 Trouble All Time Fave: Live In The Heart of the City
