During the 1980 slasher boom, many studios were trying to cash in on the success of ‘Halloween’ and ‘Friday the 13th’, by making cheap imitation slashers, with many, using a date on a calendar for a title and theme. One of these popular entries is 1980’s ‘New Year’s Evil’ directed by Emmet Alston and starring Roz Kelly. It received the usual panning from critics, some when calling it ‘bloody and gory’, when it had little blood, and unoriginal. Retrospectively, the consensus hasn’t changed, but is still a popular entry in ‘80s holiday-slashers.
During a televised New Years party, hosted by a punk icon, Blaze, in Hollywood, a killer makes threatening calls to kill someone at 12:00am, the start of the new year, and kill again, when every time zone strikes midnight.
