Something that really annoys me is when I go into a record store and the employees treat me like dirt and look down on me because I'm a 19 year old girl, and they assume I'm there just to buy pop top 40 records. Its infuriating. Not necessarily going along with the video, just a thought of mine. Loved the video, Jon!

The reasons why I bought a vinyl record when I didn't have a turntable are a couple. 1. I wanted to support the artist. 2. I loved the artwork, and having a vinyl record with that big artwork on it looks nice. Especially when placed on your wall. 3. If I ever decide to splurge for a turntable in the future, I already have my favorite albums on vinyl. 4. Collection purposes. I do have a turntable, but I do see why people would buy records without owning a turntable to play them on.

Just remember to give them a good ol' clean once you get them. Even new vinyl that has never been played before/not opened from its packaging gets a lot of dust and shit from the places that made them and sold them. I totally get your point, though! I bought The Fragile DE and Deviations 1 on vinyl just for the sake of collecting them and supporting Trent & Atticus, but thought to myself, "woah woah woah.. why would I spend so much money on vinyl and not play it? i've always kinda wanted to get into it.. might as well do so now!", so I picked up an AT-LP60 with some powered speakers (Micca PB42x, to be precise.. love them!), the turntable's seller gave me cleaning solution and a brush and such.. and I have been crazy about buying vinyl whenever the chance comes along. I plan on upgrading here to an AT-LP120 or a U-Turn here pretty soon. Maybe even a Technics or something.

The people who buy vinyl only to resell at insane prices annoy the fuck out of me. I've only started to collect vinyl recently and as a broke af student, people who buy vinyls and resell them at a minimum of £150/£200 a piece on ebay just piss me off.

Agree with everything here except for the Crosley comment. The way Crosleys are built can fuck up your records over time, making buying the records pointless. You can buy many record players for the same price that don't fuck up your records.

I hope you don't mind me asking this, but about how long does it take for the record to be fucked up? And could I buy a needle or something that wouldn't cause this to happen? I have a Crosley player and I don't want my records ruined, but I'm too poor to buy another player
@theyungcujo
@theyungcujo 7 лет назад
Fairly Løcal Dreamer I couldn't tell you. Check online forums. The records get fucked up because the weight on the cartridge is way too heavy and it literally digs into the grooves into the record, therefore losing Fidelity. If you can't afford any new TT's, I would lean towards vintage equipment, just make sure you do it right. again, check forums, they're great for info.

You're so right about resellers. There's a record store in my town that I go to all the time, and the owner gave me a really good deal on a near mint copy of sgt. pepper. It really irks me when I see records being sold for an absurd price online because those people care nothing about the music. When I go to the record store, I can tell that the owner really cares about music and sharing it with others. Records should be accessible to everyone, not just the rich.

To be honest, I'm the one who buys the CD's (No Vinyls) and doesn't listen to them. When I buy a CD, I directly rip it to my digital collection and listen to it there. I know it may sound stupid to a non collector but for me it's pretty normal. I love to collect things and I'm also a lot into Cover art. So to present the music I listen to digitally, in a physical way, I buy some CD's of bands I really like eventhough I only listen to them digitally. That's why I kind of get the point with people who are buying Vinyl but aren't listening to their vinyls. As long as they listen to the music they bought on vinyl in some way, no matter if it may be digitally or actually on that vinyl they bought, it makes sense to me.

I grew up in the 80s before CDs took over and records were just a medium for listening to music with. We never thought much about the actual vinyl discs the music came on at all. The way people get all anal about handling records and the perfect turntable setup and how they sound so much better than digital seems ridiculous to me. When CD finally became popular and affordable we were stoked. We could finally dump vinyl with the skipping, popping, crackling and having to get up to turn over to Side B every 20 mins. and spending precious money to replace styluses every 6 months and so on. In 1989 CDs were the hippest thing ever. Vinyl was dead. Digital sound was cleaner and clearer than anything we'd ever imagined before. It was like a light switching on. Vinyl didn't sound "warm" to us at all, it just sounded muddy.

about the crossley.... i'm 35. i've been playing records since i was five, i dont live online (especially in previous years) and i missed all the stigma about the cruisers and bought one, it was kinda crappy but hey at least it played although i had problems when trying to connect it up to my stereo system. it ended up being a complete waste of money though as a few months later i bought a second hand pl-112d pioneer deck, it was a small amount more than the original price i paid for the cruiser but man... the difference is outstanding!!! if you only buy thrift store vinyl, have a collection of old cheesy singles or just enjoy the sound of lo-fi crackly music in your bedroom a crossley is fine. most everyday people in the 70's and 80's that i remember had cheap horrible all in one record/radio/cassette players that as a rule weren't a lot better than the crossleys, however if you're spending serious scrilla on new, rare or collectors vinyl you'll want to invest in a nice deck to play it on. you'll also get the most out of the amazing sound of your music! happy collecting guys!!
@fortunamajor7239
@fortunamajor7239 6 лет назад
david hatred THANK YOU. I'm 21 and over the past few years I've gotten into collecting vinyl, and I honestly feel like the crossley hate is so overblown because my parents also grew up using similar all-in-one players back in the day. So it doesn't make sense to me that so many people assume that the modern equivalent is automatically gonna just chew through records. Some have, but the majority cases I've seen from friends/family/online have not put a single dent in their stuff

All valid points except for one: Crosleys are not OK for anyone, period. Crosleys DO ruin records, I know from experience. Much nicer setups can be purchased for around the same price. No need for 1000 dollar setups, but no need for Crosleys either.

With respect, you're constantly contradicting yourself. You're OK with people spending a ton of money on records to play them on a cheap TT that will truly destroy them (because physics) but not OK with people spending a ton of cash on vinyl just to own a physical copy of their favorite records (circling back to your own point about "it's their vinyl, let them do what they want with it"). You diss on "hipsters" going to record shops and buying obscure records that they might genuinely love and cherish then immediately get defensive about YOUR own collection that probably has some records like that as well. I also never understood why people (mostly young adults and teenagers) get offended when someone gently and intelligently tries to educate them on record care especially if it's super apparent that they have no clue about it (yet). "Let them do what they want, it's their album"... Well, looking forward to these people getting their kids a bike one day. Who are you to tell them what to do with it, just let them figure out how to ride it themselves, no need to give a little benevolent guidance. Let others listen to what they want to listen to and educate them (and yourself) on the actual process of playing and caring for vinyl. No need to discuss it further.

>Please stop calling them "vinyls". Thats not a real word. Yes, it is. Just as soon as hipsters started referring to a record as a "vinyl", it became a new sense of the word, and it is a sense which needs a plural form. "Vinyl" when used in the normal sense, i.e., to refer to a type of plastic material, is uncountable, thus it has no plural form. The same goes for any word that's being used to refer to a type of material. For example, there's no such thing as "aluminums". However, when the name of a type of material starts getting used as the name of an object, it becomes countable and needs a plural form. For example, "tin". There's no such thing as "tins" when referring to the element, but when using it to refer to canned food, it needs a plural form: "I have two tins of corn in the cupboard." Another example is "canvas". There is no plural form when referring to the material, but when referring to the thing that artists paint on, there is a plural form. The latest trend among hipsters and people who ride the same bandwagon as them is to point out that "the plural of vinyl is vinyl". They think they're clever and "in the know". They are neither. They're too stupid to realize why the traditional sense of "vinyl" doesn't have a plural, and too stupid to realize that that reason doesn't apply to new senses of the word that people make up.

Treat your records however you want. If you fingerbang them before giving them a nice needle fuck on a suitcase player, go for it. As long as you enjoy yourself and the music, that's what matters. *Just don't ever bring those records back into circulation on the used market. That's when it does affect others.* Vinyl is a lossy format. If i buy a used copy of something that looks fine, but was played on your Crosley for 2 years, it's going to sound like it when played on a nice system.

To be fair, handling your records badly is not looked down upon because its different to how others do it, its because its objectively bad and viewed as a sin kind of. Its not about controling others to be the same way, its about doing it a better way. But then I find it funny that in the very next topic you tell other people that they should buy a record player if they have records. Pretty Ironic :^) Music is sacred, so its not ok to buy records for money, but it is ok to handle them badly? Seems legit.

We get mad about the Crosley players because those pieces of shit actually ruin your records. Well I've never gotten mad at someone for thinking a Crosley player is a good place to start, I've definitely tried to advise people new to owning vinyl to just save up for a little longer, and then buy a nice, moderately priced record player from Audio-Technica, which makes terrific entry level players for only around $200.

While I appreciate the time you took to make this video and I respect your personal opinions, what's the difference between you and the "vinyl collectors" your ranting about? Is your opinion on these things more important? I watch a shit ton of vinyl collection videos and although I come across a few things you've mentioned(especially the crosley thing) but for the most part "vinyl collectors" seems to be a pretty broad classification. It's entertaining to me to see and hear other people's opinions but to get upset about it is a waste of time. Wait, why am I commenting? Fucker! You tricked me!! Great video man:)

As an old man of 51, from my PERSONAL opinion, I prefer my music on vinyl. I would encourage anyone who wanted to buy LP's rather than CD's. I would allow anyone to handle my records, you can always clean any marks off later. As for the Crosley Cruiser thing, I wouldn't recommend playing new records on them, but they ARE start. If you decide you want to buy new LP's, THEN I would advise to get a half decent used set up. I'm in the UK and my late '70's Sony turntable was 97 GBP on eBay, a Marantz PM-4000for 60GBP also on eBay and my Eltax speakers brand new for 70GBP. You have there a complete HiFi set up for less than the price of a second hand Technics 1200. IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BREAK THE BANK. I've never bought an LP for the sake of it, that IS a total waste of money. And I would NEVER tell anybody what they should buy. Music is as personal a purchase as it gets. I would NEVER criticise anyone's taste in music, that is arrogance beyond belief. If you DO want to get into this wonderful medium a bit more, then I would recommend getting a half decent system. tbh I never understood why vinyl is so fucking popular. I mean mp3 for me is cheaper,easier, it takes off less space and you don't have to worry about the record being chipped and damaged. edit: and also CDs edit2: I'm guilty with no.2. I have a Abbey road album by the Beatles but I don't have a turntable yet.

Your talking about records man. I completely agree. I hate that everyone today calls them vinyl but who cares. When I was younger, if someone said "vinyl", they would have though you were talking about your kitchen floor tiles or something. They're records, they're meant to be played and that vintage copy of Pink Floyd The Wall you found, had been touched and abused hundreds of times by wasted teenagers despite how "mint" it looks.

Too your point about people buying records without playing them, I actually did that for a while, it's not really a big deal, I wanted too buy music too support my favorite artists, and the concept of records are just cool, they have cool big art, come with tons of physical extras and hold their value more than CD's, also what better way too support the artist than buying the most expensive version of their product.

Good points! I see vinyl elitists on YT saying 'factory sealed and I'm never going to open it.' I get it, you know, it's like Star Wars action figures new in the factory sealed package coveted by someone forever. Dudes, play your damn records! Also, never buy pricey 'audiophile' records without first listening on YT or like I do, Amazon unlimited. If it's that great, yeah, go for it. For example, I got Pink Floyd's Relics on audiophile vinyl. Why? Because in my humble opinion, it's in my top ten favorite albums of all time and I own the CD, too. So, like, if there's an album you love so much you can play it over and over a million times, yeah go for it, get it.

Gotta be honest, I don't really care about these people. Like what you like, be what you want to be, but recognize that every purchase or post you make is a choice. If the choices you make on social media or with regards to physical media don't fulfill you, then it's entirely in your power to change them. If these people aren't fulfilled, they'll change. If they are, it's best to leave them be, otherwise you're just aggravating yourself.

As a future archiver and collector for libraries I feel like the last point is what really gets me beyond ticked off. Like they sell it to someone for a ton of money and it's a continuous cycle until either it gets into the hands of a hoarder (sorry if anyone here is one of them I do not mean any offense!) where it isn't going to be seen again or in the hands of someone who is going to play it nonstop because they don't understand how it works. There are times when a record especially vinyl should be given up to a special collection/archive. Just my thoughts, as a future librarian I get a little nerdy and touchy. Great video John or is it Jon?

I love vinyl A LOT, but if I ever get to the point that I correct someone on the way they handle their stuff, feel free to put me back in my place! Because I don't want to become a snob collector! I just want to collect! We should only give our advice, not tell someone they CAN'T! Give your opinion respectfully, and never demand! I will show my LP's on RU-vid and facebook, but I play the hell out of every record I got! That's what's so interesting about "record videos", you get to see other collectors taste, and maybe I can discover something new!

I do understand the bias against crosleys but I want to modify mine anyway. The only problem I really have with it is the tone arm is too short leading to the last few songs having a bit of noticeable distortion, to combat the I want to add length to it somehow. But yeah all these points are valid. If you think music listening vinyl heads are bad, you should hear the vinyl head DJs.

My dad has a crazy vintage setup probably 2500 records, and doesn't have an elitist attitude about it. A lot of his vinyl is in pretty bad condition (since he's had some of them since the 70s). He'll leave loose vinyl in stacks of records and it actually drives ME nuts. But he has a nitty gritty record cleaner so he doesn't have to worry about them getting dirty cuz he can clean them to be better than new.

all good points - the reseller people annoy me so much - there was a vinyl box set that i really wanted and it came on pre order at £90 (about $130) and i didn't have the money to buy it for quite a few weeks- anyway when i went back to order it it had sold out and a couple of months later it was released and within a few days people had listed copies online at 4x the price - it's so lame :( I understand people wanna make money but when they only make 500/a few 1000 copies it seems really crappy when the people who actually want it can't buy it because greedy people are just buying them up to sell on for ridiculously high prices..

Vinyls weren't available here until the big craze started so unfortunately it's hard for me not to feel like someone following the trend. I disagree with your reseller point. For one thing, they are actually doing other collectors a service by finding and making available, records that are desirable and possibly difficult to find otherwise. Not to mention that they most likely have a deep appreciation for the records and use it as a way to expand their own personal collections.

Well, for me I do like digital because I can just put it on my mp3 player and take it anywhere, but with CDs and Vinyl, it actually feels like you own it. You can pick it up and look at the disc, flip through the lyric booklet and enjoy all the art that went into it, you can read the lyrics while you listen to the album instead of going online to look up the lyrics. And that is why I like physical copies of albums. Besides, a wise man once said "there's no romance in a mouse click - Jack White".

I bought a record for 90€ once ("Eros" by Dun) and it was already the second pressing (first one from 1981, second one from 2014) but was sold out so fast that the resellers ask horrendous prices for it. And 90€ was the cheapest offer. On the other side I bought the first Offspring album (s/t) on vinyl (first pressing) for 5€ from a classmate 15 years ago... and by this time it already was worth way over 100€. But I played the shit out of it. Luckily many labels release new pressings of older and sold out stuff, so that people don't have to pay the high prices (ofc the labels want their part of the cake)...unless they really want the original one. If newer records are mastered from the original master tapes they will even sound better (like the "Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of the Moon" re-mastering from 2016) than the original ones. So sometimes I get weird looks when I go for a remastered newer edition instead for the original one.

I only have those bc I like those bands, and to me they look pretty cool on the shelf

I buy most new albums on vinyl. Sometimes if an artist doesn't release an album on vinyl I won't get it. I love going to shows and buying the openers records if I like them and if they have vinyl. I try to listen to records as much as I can I have over 300 so it's tough to put them all into rotation. There are some older albums I don't listen to much like Beach Boys, Queen, Zepplin. It's actually kinda funny I look for a specific record to listen to and end up taking out 10-20. My worst habbit besides buying way too many records, is listening to only on side of an album and just stoping.

I buy physical copies in general to own a piece of music that i love. In a world where i can listen to most music for free, i do just that, but if i really enjoy an album i buy physical. Physical is good for several things like the album art, the ability to fall back on them when you cant listen digitally, and the fact you are giving artists you enjoy money for every piece of art they put into the release, not just a disposable digital file. Vinyl album art and liner notes are the best to own, way more substance for your money, they honestly don't always sound better. Sometimes people buy old cheap records not only to bolster their numbers as you may think but also because its a piece of underrated music history. But most personally my music collection is a gallery of timestamps. A guide to what music has has emotionally effected me through the years. They serve as memories of me and my high school friends searching through music sections of the Hastings we used to frequent before they went out of buisness. My music taste and its evolution on display so i never forget where i started.

@nofuture104

Eh that has nothing to do with physical copies of albums.I never said i don't do those things, which I do when i have time and a ton of money to spend on gas AND merch (I live in a tiny town where the nearest venue is a warehouse 2 hours from here and barely any good non-local artists play at it.) My best explaination of why that isn't enough for me is concerts happen but once and Tshirts aren't the same as album art. A lot of artists put effort in their physical releases, way more effort than they put into their shirts. Also my brain works in a way that it's almost obessed with collecting, i can't really explain that.
