So, as a British trans woman, let me tell you about my experiences trying to seek trans healthcare on the NHS because it has been far from easy to transition for me. I have been on the waiting list for NHS gender identity services since August of 2019 and have yet to be seen. And there is a further wait of nine months after that for me to get a second appointment where they will actually prescribe hormones. This is long before any talk of surgery and the NHS does not cover surgeries like transfemme top surgery or FFS. The effect of this on my mental health was not good, to put it mildly. As a result of the wait time and being repeatedly refused bridging hormones by my GP, I ordered HRT online in April of 2023. As a result I have been significantly better off mentally. This is not an ideal situation and I would prefer to be prescribed and monitored by my GP, but they refused, so this is for now the least worst option. I have been offered blood tests but not for hormone levels. I am younger than Oli London and at no point was I pressured into being trans but instead pressured into being cis. Learning more about trans experiences online did not make me trans, but it told me the truth, that I was having the same feelings and that I was lying to myself about being cis.

@lizb7271 When I came out to my friends, I got asked a lot, "What made you realize you were trans?" and I'm like, bruh, the signs were there since I was a child. I just had no idea what was wrong with me until I got a lot older and started to figure it out on my own. Most of the attention I get for it is negative too, so it's not like I'm doing this to fit in.

@Pipkiablo Cis society wants us to be cis, even if some prominent people are supportive, a fact transphobic berks refuse to understand. For me, I did a lot of policing of my own gender, so I don't think my transness was that obvious as a child. A lot of my really trans memories are things that I thought inside my own head rather than things visible to an observer. In my heart of hearts, I probably always knew I was trans but that knowledge was inconvenient and uncomfortable, so I supplied a bunch of lies to explain that away. Until I was an adult, those lies held up.

The weird thing about Oli's rant about how S. Korean culture has firm lines between men and women and how nobody in S. Korea is trans because of it is odd when I distinctly remember a S. Korean trans woman who made news after she passed by suicide because she was forced to be in the military due to laws. While I don't recall her name, I remember watching her speak about how horrible she felt and how she wasn't able to present as and be the woman she is. It just feels... Orientalist to be like "the Europeans are ~gender confused~ while the Asians know the TRUTH about gender. This is why transness isn't a THING in Asia!!!"
@mommaneganhobbystuff2409

There are literal cultural roles trans women used to fill in India before British occupation or reports of genderfluidity and transition in southern Asia(I do not recall the specific country, but if I pressured, the Polynesian Islands)
@thetribunaloftheimaginatio5247
That's because it IS Orientalist. Oli London thinks K-Pop is the only thing worth a damn in any Asian country, and the only reason we even know this dipshit's name is because He Went To Vegas To Marry A Cardboard Cutout Of His Favorite K-Pop Performer. He literally reduced an Asian man to an effigy so he could wed that effigy in a blatantly-obvious publicity-stunt, and we let him get away with it until he finally decided that the REAL money was in riding on the coattails of British transphobia.

At first being "transracial" gave him clout, until it didn't, so he went to the "trans" part, and it gave him cloud, until it didn't; and since the """"""left""""" won't give him any clout, he plays the right-winger for clout.

The waiting list for gender identity services in Ireland is estimated at ten years, so even if you were an 8 year old when you got put on the list, you won’t get seen until you’re an adult. The absolute abandonment of the trans community in ireland means that most trans women (including me) self medicate. We literally have a secret list of doctors who we go to for blood tests (blood tests being an essential part of safe HRT) because we know that the medical establishment will attack doctors who offer to help us self medicate. This is the same medical establishment which is responsible for our healthcare, and thinks a ten year waiting list is acceptable btw. They won’t help us, but they will attack doctors who do help us. The idea that Oli has that he, as an adult, with fukken influencer money, can just travel the world and go get surgery in fukken Thailand - the fact he thinks that *this* is the trans experience and it’s not actually a would full of gatekeepers, bigots and grey market healthcare just demonstrates to me that he’s completely fucking unqualified. I’m amazed he said even spoke to one trans woman in his life - because if he did he certainly didn’t listen to her.

I also hear from some people "you are such a hourglass". People who like me often tell me "oh its not so big" because they try to be nice and give me reassurence. I am objectively fat and only fit in 3-4XL trousers. My body is very non proportional too, because i can wear european L t shirts. And when i had dysmorphia, i truly thought my face is the ugliest face on earth and planned multiple plastic surgeries. And now i think my face is amazing and i cant see things i used to see like ten years ago

@@aurelfrompluto2434so would one of the big differences essentially be that w dysphoria you don't actually mind the size of your hips/chest it's about how the size is perceived as feminine ? While my dysmorphia was just me seeing my face... incorrectly. I saw things that didn't exist in reality.

Oli wanted to be Korean. He called himself trans Korean. He appropriated a word in the hopes of protecting himself against backlash for something that does not exist. It didn't work. And so now, he is anti-trans. As if, like you said, getting the wrong treatment for his problems is the thing at fault, not him not seeking true medical care. I don't think he ever truly thought of himself as trans, I just think he used the word for his own benefit. But then, this is the guy who also said he chose to be gay, cause that's how that works. The idea that all types of media response are good overall ignores the real-life harm such exposure can bring - for example, Oscar Wilde learned that baiting his lover Bosie’s aristocratic and notoriously violent father into a court case landed Wilde in jail doing hard labor - which meant he died far too young and we were robbed of a literary master far too soon. It also means that amoral creeps like Ollie can spends thousands on facial surgeries and making absurdly racist comments about how he became “Korean” etc and then attack a very vulnerable group (trans persons) that will result in danger and potential suffering for members of that group - NOT for Ollie himself. Hence my issue with the old “all attention is good” idea so popular…

It's so weird how grifters who "speak from experience" are always the kinds of people who were themselves the problem, and not the thing they're grifting against. Ex-gay grifters would be all like, "I was SO gay that I tried to SA my roommate." And it's like, no dude. You didn't almost SA your roommate because you were gay, you have issues. Or those people who talk about the "horrors"of being a girlboss talking about how when THEY tried it, they were assholes to the people around them. Again, not an issue with girlbossing, but an issue with the person themselves just not being a nice person who managed their relationships in a healthy way. In Oli's case, it's not society, the medical world, or even trans people who are the problem when he detransitioned. HE was the problem. HE threw a tantrum and didn't seek the right medical help. HE did all he could to NOT do things properly. It's so frustrating how he's pointing his finger at people who "didn't help him" when HE MADE IT SO THAT THEY COULDN'T.

Trans guy here. Love your explanation of dysmorphia versus gender dysphoria. I didn't realize I was trans till 40 and spent my life hating mt body. I assumed I had dysmorphia to some degree because I deep down knew that no amount of dieting or working out would ever make me happy with my body. Then I figured out I was trans. A 5 year process. (Some seriously slow hatching!) Suddenly options to change my body became available and I took them. And I am _so_ happy with my body for the first time ever. I can see the flaws, both real and dysphoric. I'd like to lose some weight and the feminine hips are never going anywhere. But in a fundamental way I am actually okay with my body as I've never been before now. One anecdotal proof that dysphoria is essentially different than dysmorphia is the fact that I've never met a trans masc person who received top surgery to get further chest surgeries such as pec implants or shaping. Every post-top surgery trans guy I've met is super happy with their chests and proud of their scars. If it was dysmorphia we'd all be wanting ever more extremely masculine chests and yet we don't. It always seems to be just one surgery leading to happy results. (Discounting truly needed corrections. Know one guy who went in for a revision on a pretty extreme dog ear. But that's not more surgeries. That's trying to get a reasonable result on one surgery.) Thanks for the excellent and very knowledgeable insights on specific aspects that indicate Oli was never trans at all. It almost seems incorrect to describe him as a detransitioner.

A book debate is a place where subjective opinions can be equally valid to one another, a debate over human rights has only one answer and that is “yes, humans have rights” There’s no reason why cis people should think they know what the trans experience is better than trans people, so why even try have this debate?

An extra little thing I noticed as a Christian is that Oli London's conversion narrative is extremely vague and doesn't make a whole lot of sense. He's Catholic, not born-again (which is a subset of evangelical Protestant), but you wouldn't necessarily know that from reading the book, which tends to just refer to God, the Bible, and churches without specific associations. I can see why Savy thought he's born-again. I'm sure this can largely be explained by just saying that he's just not very theologically coherent, which is normal and fine, but I find it telling that he expresses thanks to the "wider Christian community" for rescuing him. In the US, conservative Catholic groups are big players in the anti-trans religious space, but not the biggest. In the UK, where he is from, Catholic groups play a negligible role in anti-trans politics - the funding and organisational power is with evangelical groups. These are the ones behind much of the detransition media frenzy. By not being specific about his Catholicism, Oli avoids alienating them and increases his value as a token detransitioner. It just comes across as super transparent grifting. He also dodges tricky theological questions. There are differences of interpretation, but does he believe like many Catholics that the soul has no sex? And does he believe that Sacred Tradition (i.e., the traditions of the Church) is an authority in matters of faith alongside Scripture? Does he read a Bible with the additional books that are in the Catholic but not the Protestant canon? These things are kind of important in the context of the narrative he's trying to tell. I genuinely feel sorry for Oli London. I get the feeling that his faith is genuine, or at least that there's a genuine core underneath the grifty exterior. I agree with Savy - if he had woven his faith story into a bigger narrative about overcoming plastic surgery addiction and dysmorphia, this book could have been legitimately interesting.

I wonder if Oli's argument about pronouns is just lazy pandering or complete ignorance. Korean doesn't mark gender on pronouns. Most of the world's languages do not. It's a super common feature of Indo-European descended languages, but very rare otherwise.

@erichamilton3373 7 месяцев назад
Indo-European languages also have gender: giving us that term. Spanish has 2 genders, Latin had 3, German still has 3. English, curiously, and un-indo-europeanly has no gender. Its pronouns correspond to (perceived) sex.

I can’t remember if I actually commented this the last time you had a video that you spoke about the difference between dysphoria and dysmorphia, so forgive me if I’m repeating myself, but I have the opposite side of the story with the large breast issue. To your point, you had dysphoria about your chest size, and having a reduction got rid of the issue, thereby resolving the dysphoria. I also have a large bust. *objectively* a large bust. Like, middle to latter half of the alphabet sized cups. But sometimes when I look at myself in the mirror, my dysmorphia makes me see my chest as average or small. Getting implants or making them bigger is never going to fix my issue because my issue isn’t real, it’s just how my brain reads the image I’m seeing. Nothing but working on my mental health and self image is going to resolve the issues I have with my body

I had dysmorphia when I was younger. I saw myself as super skinny no matter what other people saw me. Also, as ugly, haha, but who knows. Oh, and because I was also an extremely dark nihilist, I lacked the dedication to work out trying to fix it, so I was just depressed for a while. Like extreme depression, the kind that makes life unbearably painful to live through second by second. I haven't experienced anything close to it, in terms of pure agony atomized and made structural to existence, ever in any time since. And im a connoisseur of pain one could say, haha. So I know that it could have led to some pretty strange behavior if I'd had potentially had access to the resources that I, in fact, lacked. At least Ollie is making money right. I hope you don't mind me asking as you seem to be very open about it, I have always been curious about your breast reduction as a cis woman who also suffers from large breasts. How were you able to get your breath reduction especially at such a young age? I've been fighting my doctor for years now and he still refuses to even give me a consultation, I've even approached completely new doctors to try and get a consultation and still I haven't been seen by a surgeon. I have 36M sized breasts which cause daily discomfort and pain but I am also 250lbs at 5'3. I have been told I need to lose weight before I can see a surgeon but the breasts cause weight-loss to be dangerous and painful. I also went up at least 5 cup sizes since losing 20 pounds. That's a lot of personal information I apologize, I guess my question is do you have any advice on how I could advocate for myself and receive my much needed surgery? How did you manage to receive it? It's hard to find people in a similar position to me so I'm just really in need of some advice from someone who understands you know?
@SAVYWRITESBOOKS
@SAVYWRITESBOOKS Год назад
Thanks for asking! So, for one thing, I'm not sure what constitutes "young" here, but i wasn't able to get my surgery until age 29. I was almost 30. I know some people get them at age 19-20, and I wish i knew how THEY did it, haha. What I did was, my mom's friend's daughter had a successful surgery, so I had them refer me to the surgeon. Then, I went in and consulted with them. I was lucky because I was connected with a good surgeon from the start. See if you can ask around for anyone you know who has had a good experience with a surgeon and if they can recommend that person to you. If you're in the Illinois area I can recommend you my surgeon. Regarding the weight loss, I'm not entirely sure how to navigate that, but I do know some plus size women who have had the surgery done as well so perhaps I can reach out to them and see. It seems counterproductive for them to ask you to lose weight first, when the size of your breasts makes it almost impossible to do most exercises.

@raynebowmo2223 Год назад
@@SAVYWRITESBOOKS for some reason I was under the impression that you had it done closer to 20 and I started to feel as if i was going to miss some arbitrary cutoff. I'm glad to know I don't have to be in a rush (though the sooner the better for sure!) How much did your surgery cost? I live in Canada so the government can cover the cost for me but only if I fall under certain requirements, though it's extremely hard to find what those actually are. Yeah and as for the weight loss thing it does seem like bullshit to me? I've definitely seen plus size girls get reductions and completely agree that weight-loss is nearly impossible as of right now. I can barely go to the gym without pulling a muscle in my chest and am physically incapable of running without injury, I honestly think my doctor is kind of a bully but I haven't been able to find a new one either so I've felt quite stuck.

Love your videos so much. Sadly one of my roommates has liked some of his stuff on twitter and some of the stuff I’ve heard her say and posts sounds a lot like stuff that he’s saying and believes. She says that she’s an ally of the LGBTQ Plus community she just has opinions on the issues. She also accidentally shared a link to an anti-trans article by a group called independent women’s voice on her instagram story before shortly removing it. She’s also an extremely evangelical Christian who acts like she’s more liberal when she’s actually more conservative. I will never understand why she thinks the way she thinks and it hurts to hear her say or post hateful things. But I don’t feel comfortable with confronting her about it because of how I’ve seen her interact with people she doesn’t agree with. Once I graduate from college I plan to go to extremely limited contact with her because of her beliefs.

Great commentary. As terrible as his book sounds it still points out the problems of not fitting in in society. His anger at his rejection has led him to take the villain route. The problem is strict gender expectations and conformity and not people's choice of identity. He may have other mental issues aside from body dysmorphia that needs attention. Religion is not the solution and may compound his issues because Christianity has a strict expectation to adherence to gender roles.

I only ever saw the name randomly appear on social media but never paid any attention to it.. What a ride. Good video but hell, this was upsetting. Hope he heals and that people stop generalising about one case. It's important to take mental health and several conditions such as body dysphoric disorder serious so that this doesn't happen. But he literally speaks of how he circumvented the system because it tried to do that. Then he goes around and says the system needs to get better bc it pressured him into his path and let him make these decisions when really, it didn't. He's just avoiding responsibility for his own misery that he caused by himself by not acknowledging his mental health struggle. I just wonder - was there not a singular person in his life that cared enough about him to.. try and talk to him about this and help him? I don't wanna blame someone for making mistakes while ill but I do blame him for knowing this was a mistake, criticising influencers in their role and influence/ authority just to do the same (potentially recreating this experience for several people due to his large following). That's so tragic.
