Slayer doesn’t use green screen. They filmed this in Egypt. They have filmed videos in really difficult places. One video was filmed at the Mud Flats in Turkey. Ice-T did a cover of Raining Blood that you should check out. South Of Heaven is also an awesome song.
This was actually filmed on location in Egypt. Supposedly Slayer had to sort of beat feet and leave the country quickly after filming because the government was not to happy about the entire thing. Slayer and their imagery often expose shocking but true human history and real-life atrocities. Sort of like a horror film, it is meant to shock the senses.
Slayer is a great band but keep in mind, this song is Slayer Lite. A lot of their other music is a lot faster and heavier. They touch many subjects that other bands would be taboo. They are not condoning Satan, serial killers or killing. They are showing what you can see in the world Another thing to think about is two members of Slayer are Christian. One of their drummers is Christian and was born in Havana. The singer is Catholic and was born in Chile
Catholics would have an issue with you calling them Christian just a heads up lmao my Latina wife would have a few fighting words with you for that. Regardless I agree and you are correct.
I wouldn't say Slayer Lite, but Slayer Mellow. :) This is heavy and groovy, but much more laid back than the typical slayer track. One of my favourites.
Public Enemy sampled Slayer song “Angel of Death” for “She watch Channel Zero.” Ice T Metal group covered Slayer song “Raining Blood” and also Slayer song “Post Mortem.” Slayer guitarist Kerry King played lead guitar on Beastie Boys songs “You’ve got to fight”(For your right to party.” Kerry King also played guitar on Beastie Boys song “No Sleep til Brooklyn.”
They are one of the 4 bands that started this style.. Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer are known as the core 4 that came out in the early eighties that shaped metal since.. These 4 were my childhood, and still prominently in my life musically! Good reactions.
@@pikyarte Sepultura just took longer to break onto the scene. They werent super popular in the states until 89 with the release of BtR. if you wanna include more in the "Big 4" it would be more guys like Exodus, Testament and MAYBE Overkill. Tho Seplultura is SICK AS FUCK. Love them.
There’s a couple different interpritations of this song but the more common ones is that its abbout a certain sect of Egyption slaves that after a pyramid for a pharoe was finished and the pharoe was put inside the tomb, these certain slaves were basically thrown in the pyramid as well with 4 seasons of food (1 year) to protect the tomb from raiders…. well what happens? People go insane from the constant darkness with no escape… like an abyss… deadly fights break out and after 1 yr when food is low…. cannibalism and certain death…. and yes, with much political & local bribing, the did film this in & around the pyramids of Egypt…
For the true Slayer experience, the entire Reign in Blood album is required listening. It will take about 30 min to listen to the whole album, and take about 30 years off some peoples lives. Its the best thrash metal album ever.
Slayer are NOT Nazis. For one, Dave Lombardo is Cuban(born there)& Tom Araya is from Chile. Jeff was just fascinated by WW2 imagery. He also collected WW2 medals
Their drummer is incredible. This is my favorite Slayer album. Lots of bangers. Also, the lead guitarist, Kerry King plays the guitar solo for the Beasties song "Fight for your right". There's your rap connection. ;)
I can't wait for this..I was in a band 33 yrs ago and we use to play this while rehearsing..such n enjoyable song to play on guitar and our drummer was sick as f##k.
The song is about what happened to the slaves and wives of the Pharos in Egypt who died. According to their culture, they were put in the tomb with the dead Pharo and sealed in there alive to die. Crazy stuff back then.
I think the song is inspired by Aleister Crowley's idea/concept in thelema of "the abyss." Oh and the skull, the guitar player Jeff Hanneman was a big collector of German WW2 items and interested in history. His father fought in WW2. I doubt he was a national socialist, was maybe trying to be a little edgy.
That and the fact that he was a big fan of punk. Overkill LA, (not the metal band), had that on their Triumph Of The Will LP cover. Good chance he was a fan.
Horns way up!!! SLAYER!!!!!!!!!! I hope you are ready, Slayer fans are a very different breed. Yo speak to what Don wax saying about the iconography in the video: the ss borrowed a lot of their symbols from ancient Egyptian iconography, so there is that.
I would suggest South Of Heaven as it's a banger, somewhat mellow with some speed inserted but typically enjoyed by new people. Also, I would say maybe Raining Blood, normally I don't recommend this one to newcomers of Slayer as it has some very fast and aggressive parts, but you guys may have heard the main riff sampled before. Lil Jon sampled it in Stop Fuckin' Wit Me.
Public Enemy sampled “Angel of Death” for the song “She Watch Channel Zero” and Kerry King Played guitar on Beastie Boys “You’ve Got to Fight” (For your right to party” and “No Sleep until Brooklyn.”
I bought this on cassette the day it was released, an absolute banger of an album. Just like 'Reign in Blood' and 'South of Heaven' there were no weak tracks, just listen to the whole thing start to finish. 'War Ensemble', 'Hallowed Point', 'Dead Skin Mask', ''Skeletons of Society', one ripping nasty track after another.
Slayer is pure energy, they set the bar as the heaviest, most extreme band of their day, and I don't think anyone has topped them since. Think of NWA (I'm not a rap expert) or the most extreme gangsta rap outfit, and that's the corollary to Slayer. They were so shocking and so pure in their vision that I think of it more as art than music. Suggestion, there's a great thrash band just up I-25 from you (Denver) called Havok. I would recommend their video "DOA" or "From the Cradle to the Grave". Would love to see you do more Iron Maiden as well, that's a deep rabbit hole. Go Nuggets!
They are definitely not the hardest anymore imo, Cannibal Corpse and many others are way "harder" that being said give me Slayer over that any day, CC is amazing instrumentally but I'm not down with the vocal tones, just my two cents not that anyone asked lol. Also fuck yeah brother Havok is sweet. Iron Maiden is amazing too and so much fun to play on bass (I suck at guitar)
If drum patterns are your thing then you need to listen to more Slayer because Dave Lombardo is pretty much the gold standard for metal drummers. There’s his drumming and some of the best riffs you’ll ever hear dotted through Slayer’s back catalog. And yeah they do go into some delicate subjects but it’s opening people’s eyes, not promoting joining the far right
Slayer has been accused of Nazism (unfairly) based on the song Angel of Death that was about Mangela. It wasn't a song praising him. It was a song about the atrocities he committed.
I know you guys probably get a lot of songs pushed, but I don't see how you have never checked out Amon Amarth, August Burns Red, or Sabaton. They are the kings of metal. I would highly recommend checking them out
Daves syncopation in a speed thrash band is what stood out to me the most and what set him apart from other thrash bands back in the day. When South of Heaven came out and i first heard Behind The Crooked Cross, I was blown away. His playing on that track is so fluid.
Im sure you've in an indirect way havr heard Slayer before without even knowing it. Guitarist Kerry King did the solos for the Beastie Boy's songs Fight for Your Right and No Sleep Till Brooklyn.
This is a quote from the net.. to me it seems accurate in my opinion. "song "Seasons in the Abyss" by Slayer is about the descent into madness and the struggle to survive and make sense of the darkness. It is a warning about how quickly life can spiral out of control in a chaotic world, and how humans can become desensitized to violence. The song is a metaphor for the willingness to ignore suffering, pain, and destruction in order to be able to find moments of peace and joy, while the imagery and chorus remind us of our mortality and how quickly life can be taken away. The song encourages us to make the most of life, appreciate the “seasons” of our lives and remember to be mindful of our mortality, so that we can make the most of our limited time."
...and, yeah. this is a song MTV friendly, likely written for that soft market. By all means, listen to the rest. I say them on their last tour and it was a life long bucket list event
Kerry King played guitar on Beastie Boys “You’ve got to Fight for your Right to Party” and “No Sleep til Brooklyn.” Beastie Boys are Jewish. Rick Rubin Slayers famous music producer is Jewish.
That's no green screen. They went to Egypt. Money talks money. Will get you to do a lot of things. Especially if it's gonna line the pockets of the government.
Regarding your point about the long song intros. Trash metal trend always has been known for having long instrumental intervals of solos, that create the atmosphere, highlight the story. You'll find these concepts with almost every band - Slayer, Metallica, Antrax, Testament, Megadeth, all took time to showcase their technicality and talent. On the other hand there is a fabulous video of interview with Frank Zappa. During the time, when MTV and music video culture got so popular he brought to light the reality of the insane video costs. In the late 80s early 90s to create a video itself was very expensive - we're talking 100 thousand $'s, plus the fees to be on the promoting music channel. The music commercialisation became more about advertising and selling song like a visual product with a hook rather than musical piece of art for listening. Man had a lot to say... He was an amazing, funny and singer and guitarist, and was the front runner fighting against the music and lyrical censorship in the USA music industry. Thanks to him the EXPLICIT sign on the albums were invented. Worth checking out.
And then people wanna pee in their pants over Doja Cat dressing like a demon... bands have been doing crazy sht looooong before 😂😂😂 and SLAYER is one of the OGs
Slayer band members are Christian and Catholic btw. A lot of their songs are religious themed. It’s just from a different perspective. Like the song Angel of Death or Raining Blood or even South of Heaven.
Angel of Death is not religious themed at all. It's solely about Josef Mengele, Hitlers Angel of Death. And contrary to what all the anti slayer people say, it's not pro Hitler at all. It's just about the atrocities that we're committed. SLAAYYYEERRR!!!!!🤘🤘
From what i remember back when this came out, they had to use mirrors to recreate the inside of the pyramids. I've always thought of a lot of heavy metal was the past or current news set to music. As far as the skull, Jeff Hanneman the guitarist was a huge collector of WW2 memorabilia.
Yeah my friends jeff"rip" grew up in so Cal San bernardino. I love the thin Lizzy intro mistake.thats the beauty of thrash.mistakes are always welcome 🤗
Glad to see you reacting to Slayer.. I hope to get a reaction to Sepultura.. The same era.. In my opinion the are almost equal to Slayer... Should start whit dead embrionic cells..
That entire album ("Arise') is absolute FIRE. It's one of the few albums I owned growing up that I could listen to beginning to end without skipping a song and it never got old. So I'll agree with you and say start with 'Dead Embryonic Cells', but definitely also check out 'Arise', 'Desperate Cry', and 'Infected Voice' from that same album.
You pretty much called it on the out of body experience, into the abyss as decribed by Alistair Crowley. Rock and metal lyrics are many times purposefully open to interpretation. Not always a literal exact definition of the song. Tom lombardo the godfather of double bass drumming is one of the best, very creative. This very mellow Slayer song gives the drums time to shine. Its ok to just listen to the instruments and or vocals. Unlike rap where you have to pay attention to the lyrics more :)
Fuck yes! All hail the horns of rock! I am so on board with BP and Don Wannabe axe-ploring hard rock and classic metal! It was my life until I opened my eyes to all genres of music! Slayer is GOATs! p.s One of my best logtime friends is adopted from columbia, so I identify alot with you guys friendship!
Nope. Not a green screen. If you look at at him while he's singing and his eyes are moving all around, he's actually looking out for the Egyptian cops because they aren't supposed to be filming in and near those pyramids.
The whole song is about letting go of the collective thought. Most of us have “our” opinions but if one really thinks about it…”your” opinion is typically something you heard or read from someone else that you either admire or hate. It WILL kill your individuality. They’re simply saying let all that go………..while being allowed to play the song in front of some ancient structures. C’mon. Fkn metal 🤘🏼

You want a real Slayer experience?….jump ahead a few years to a more recent trilogy they made. “You Against You + Repentless + Pride In Prejudice”. You will even see a few better known celebrities in them. Danny Trejo, Tony Moran, Derek Mears to name a few. Enjoy Guys! Love Ya!
Oh boys you stumbled upon one of metals legends!!!! Slayer is definitely NOT pro Nazi, but they do talk about very horrifying subject matters that others often shy away from, thus they seem particularly hard and sometimes even "evil" in some opinions.although the latter is not true either necessarily, they do have some disturbing and definitely darker lyrics than most, but that in no way means they are evil...simply that they are interested in discussing darker subjects and topics.however,Tom and Kerry have a great taste in horror themed stories and tales....art in general I suppose. They collect horror themed stuff as far as I can tell.them is my peeps!!I love them!their ability to write and PLAY their instruments....holy crap, the drums on this track are my favorite on the album!!!I've been lucky enough to rock at a Slayer concert in person and i can honestly say that it was SUPER HEAVY!!loved it!🎶❤✌
It was that symbol! But it's not a sign of Jeffs's allegiance to Fascism( The guitarist ).., It's a reminder that it happened! His father fought against the Nazis and returned home to the States with a few trophies that he got from kills. Jeff became obsessed with that period of history. I'm glad he did these things, Slayer and especially Jeff were never into Nazism or any kind of repression but they were constantly accused of it simply because they had the tenacity to, openly and brutally describe what happened within a genre of music that was always going to be a poster boy for Evil in a closed-minded (mainstream)society like the USA in the '80s and '90s. They've written many songs about War, Religion, and Societal denigration. They have always reflected the worst of humanity back on itself without ever supporting it. But like a deadpan comedian, it takes an audience with intelligence to get it and not be offended. I challenge you to listen to "Behind the Crooked Cross" or "Angle of Death" and then come back and tell me that these guys are fucking Nazis instead of unfiltered truth-tellers of the horrors of Fascism. .
Slayer (and many more metal bands) often has layered lyrics. This means they can write songs from the perspective of a nazi, a serial killer,.... This makes people think they are "this" or "that" while they are actually exposing ugly stuff in society. That can be lyrical, through symbols and imagery,... And it's provocative too yes. Something rappers definitely could get behind I think. This song is about the dark side of your being, taken from a book I think? Definitely an occult 19th century thing. Dark thoughts are often a subject in metal as it is not a thing we avoid but embrace. It deepens your being but sometimes is a nasty path.
You should watch Dave Lombardo (slayers original drummer, the one in this video)playin "war inside my head) w/suicidal tendency with is a band you guys would really like. It's his drum cam video if you look it up he's a legen of a drummer
You mentioned this video being shot to make it look like it was somewhere in the Middle East… It was the late 80s and early 90s. These records, like Seasons In the Abyss, Rust in Peace, etc, reflected the times, and the current state of the world, both politically and socially. So much of the content on these records revolved around what was going on in the Middle East, with Desert Storm, as well as the social unrest in the streets in cities across the US. If you wanted to know what was really going on, you definitely weren’t tuning into the mainstream media and their lies, which was the only option we had for news and current events, since social media didn’t exist yet. Kind of sad when you think about it since the same shit is still going on in 2024.
