Les Claypool, the founder of Primus, is known across all genres to be one of the best Bass players of all time. Especially Slap Bass! I have played Bass most my life in Heavy Metal and Les has always been one of my heroes.
@@tuffs4it the guitar work is incredible…..but it’s mixed back behind the bass in the mix…..bass is driving the cart! I never noticed before today but it seemed like the bass was panned to the left and guitar to the right…..that’s not typical. Cheers mate.
@@chrisfrench9257 Ive tried to listen and Ws big brown beaver and Jerry are the only ones I like. Tommy the cat is great playing but . I have a wide listening range and only a few Primus songs are in there. More of a Punk, Metal, NuMetal, Rap/HH, industrial, type of guy. Bad Brains, Oingo Boingo, Cure, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Pantera, Rancid, Agent Orange, Black Flag, Fugazi, Drop Kick Murphy, Pixies, Nirvana, STP, Ozzy, Judas Priest, Mushroomhead, Slipknot, MegaDeth, ....
The appeal of Primus is the combination of extraordinary talent, and the refusal to take themselves seriously. Some of the most unpretentious, pure musicianship in the industry. Something greatly needed and appreciated in its time.
@@stevenlaurin6059 Just don't you dare throw anything on stage or you will get a legendary rant about small peckered shit heads who throw shit on stage.
Les Claypool explained that the story was inspired by a fishing trip. "I was fly fishing with a friend of mine up in Lassen County (California), and the sun was going down and we were heading back to the car," he said. "He was off in one direction, and I went off in another direction. I come around this corner and I step into the creek. And just as I spied this thing, it spied me. It was this big, furry mass coming my way. It flipped and popped its tail and scared the s--t out of me, and I scared the s--t out of it. It was this giant beaver. I mean, it was huge. So it kind of got in my head. This big brown beaver, big brown beaver. Okay. Well, how can I make a song out of that? And then it became, 'Wynona's got herself a big brown beaver.' And from there it just built into this little mythological character that obviously had a little double entendre to it."
@@MycoGroove thank you!! I just saw Primus at the Hollywood Bowl last month. Maynard and his bands opened and jammed with Primus throughout the show. EPIC
PRIMUS did a full tour playing the entire RUSH album A FAREWELL TO KINGS (complete w/ kimonos and double neck guitar)s they said it was the hardest thing they ve done
Primus is one of my favorite bands. Been listening to them since the early 90s and had the pleasure to see them twice live thus far. Les Claypool is one of my bass idols!
Best concert I ever attended? Primus opening for Rush in 1993. Holy shit. The Roll The Bones/Seas Of Cheese tour. My college classmate and I took a midterm on a Tuesday afternoon, drove 5 hours, saw the show, slept 5 hours, drove 5 hours back, and took another midterm. In less than 24 hours. And made A's on both. And STILL got to see Neil Peart's live drum solo in between.
Along the same line as Primus and Bloodhound Gang is Green Jelly "Three Little Pigs!" You should check that one out. If you do more Primus, My Name Is Mud is essential! Love it so much! And now you know who sings the theme for South Park as well! 😂😂
I dig BHG and Green Jelly but Primus as a tier above... Simply because they have one of the best bassist of all time. Les playing alone takes their goofy -ish into the serious Conversations. Not taking anything away from the others... but it's like that video where the drummer is way overqualified for their job
Nobody sounds like Primus. They created their own lane. Them and Mr. Bungle are the two groups I respect the most in that regard. It's just unique and immediately recognizable.
Dude, I haven't listened to some Green Jelly since I was a teen. Can't believe I forgot about them. You just opened a hole worm hole for me to go back into today on RU-vid.
Omg!!! Hell yes!! I made Cliff react to this, and he about lost his shit! He 💯 thought I was trolling him!! 🤣 Les Claypool is your favorite bassist's favorite bassist!! Please dive down this rabbithole!! My name is mud, Jerry was a racecar driver, Tommy the cat, Those damned blue collar tweekers, & John the fisherman are just a few good one!! PRIMUS SUCKS 🤘
I scrolled down these comments looking for you! You broke cliff with this one. I’m waiting to see what BP and Don think of this one. But the look on BP‘s face immediately tells me it’s like what the hell? Lol.😂 like a fever dream 😂
les claypool is the lead singer and bassist. he is know as one of the worlds best bassists. he auditioned for metalica and they said he was just too good for them. Primus is just crazy funky rock....lots of comedy to their music.
Primus is very eclectic in their musical style. My Name is Mud, Tommy the Cat, Jerry was a Racecar Driver, Too Many Puppies, Mr Krinkle are most of their most well known songs, but I love their entire catalog. Les Claypool (bass) is considered one of the top bass players, Larry Lalonde (guitar) is considered one of the first death metal guitarists from the band Possessed, and Tim Alexander (drums) is one of the few drummers that can work with this band. Oh, check their covers of The Devil Went Down to Georgia and N.I.B.
These guys are so fun to watch and listen to live. I honestly was never a fan of their studio music and then I happened to see them live, playing their instruments, and just jamming out. It was an eye opening experience. These guys just get down and have fun, not giving 2 F***s about what people think.
I was fortunate to be living in San Francisco back in the early '90's when they were getting wound up. Probably saw them thirty times...always an incredible experience and the shows just kept getting bigger and bigger. My son just saw them a couple of nights ago, spanning two generations, he enjoyed them as much as I ever did. Primus (still) Sucks!!!
Primus is also the only band, last time I checked, to have their own genre on iTunes. None of their songs really sound alike but they all sound like Primus. They are the reason I learned to play bass in middle school. Cheers.
My name is mud is a must. Another obscure group is Presidents of the United States of America Lump and Peaches are the ones well known but kitty, and dune buggy are my favorites.
My 23 year old son Showed me Primus and I like them. I am 60. It’s weird and I like weird!! ❤️🤪 The look on your face made me laugh more than the song.🙄🥴😂
massive primus fan for many many years. a few things.... Funny you should mention the devil went down to georgia as they have a cover of that and its fantastic. A lot of people would view primus as a 'joke' band. They certainly are not. they are light hearted and certainly dont take themselves seriously all the time but there are tracks in the discography with a very real and serious message. Yes they all can really play, Les Claypool is widely recognised as one of the greatest bassists of all time and the things he can do with the instrument are honestly mind blowing. Guitarist Larry Lalonde is criminally under rated. To be able to write stuff to go with Les's basslines alone take enormous skill and he hits it out the park every time. They have had a few drummers over thier career and once again all are supremely tallented. Theres a real rabbit hole to jump down with primus for sure thatt will cover all moods and emotions and there are 'spin off' bands to should you wanna jump down those holes to haha. Stick with them and listen to something a little more serious would be my suggestion.
Primus is awesome!!! Les Claypool has a massively extensive catalog of music. Here are a few of his bands and this is by far not all of them: Primus, Sausage, OysterHead, Colonel Les Claypool's Fearless flying frog brigade, Les Claypool and the Holy Mackerel present Highball with the Devil, MIRV, Les Claypool's Fancy Band, that's all I can recall at the moment. I know I'm missing a couple but If you want a rabbit hole here you go. It won't disappoint!! Btw he does a cover of 'The devil went down to Georgia' as well. He has done many Pink Floyd covers in fact On the Frog Brigade 'Live Frogs Set 2' is the entire Pink Floyd album 'Animals'. But you should start with 'My name is Mud ' On the album 'Pork Soda '❤❤
@@chiefaberach you're absolutely correct. I knew I was forgetting something. Their live at the Boston House of Blues is a phenomenal performance. Thank you for reminding me of this and not letting this epic band go unmentioned.
There was also Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains, got to see them live once. The only time I've ever seen Les take a back seat on lead... Buckethead, could take my eyes off his playing.
So most of the comments are "Jerry was a race car driver" or "My name is mud" But I would have to argue that the live version of "Groundhog's Day" should be your next Primus reaction.
Primus has been around since the mid-80's. They have been doing this a loooooong time. Pork Soda was their best album IMO. My Name is Mud is probably their most well known song.
This was the first song on my youngest daughters bedtime playlist when she was an infant, The Bass in on another level and the rhythm is on it's own plane.
Primus used to play at small clubs all the time in Oakland and Berkeley area. I have seen them many, many many times. They never disappoint! Mosh pits were epic. The last time I saw them was during their Willy Wonka tour. I was a couple decades older but still danced my a&& off. Thanks for the reaction. So many memories. 💐
people who play bass and drums do like Primus , it's not a catchy mainstream music kind , but more about original and skilled musicians that appeal to people who enjoy their skills , riffs and techniques
One of the greatest shows of my life was at the Boulder Theater in '92 . . . lost my glasses in the mosh pit and 6 dudes got down on the ground and helped me find them . . . great times. Primus did an encore covering Peter Gabriel's "Intruder" . . . fucking epic!
What makes me like Primus? The uniqueness, humor, musicianship. As others have said, they have been categorized as their own sound. I believe it was on Apple Tunes that the category was "Primus". Most every video they put out has some humor to it and they all play the hell out of their instruments. Too Many Puppies, Frizzle Fry, John The Fisherman, Those Damn Blue Collar Tweakers, Jerry Was a Racecar Driver, Tommy The Cat, Is It Luck?, Southbound Pachyderm, Mr Krinkle, Laquerhead, Lee Van Cleef, and so many more are great songs by Primus!!! I have yet to really hear a song from Primus that I dislike.
Prius also does the theme song to south park, oh and primas has cover of devil went down to Georgia with a claymation video for the visuals of the story
Sweeeeettt!! This was my recommendation for a reaction request from you FUQ bois some time ago!! Hey, you don’t have to be a believer, to grasp the ol’ big brown beaver!! 🦫
Crazy fact that this film clip was filmed at a slower speed to make it look like it does with fast movements, so the actuality played it slower, so it matched in the end
Primus - Too Many Puppies, My Name is Mud, John The Fisherman, Jerry was a Race Car Driver, Tommy The Cat I saw these guys in concert. They opened for Rush
They have such a unique sound! The songs that always make my playlists are Too Many Puppies and Welcome to this World. They have so many fun songs, though!
I have seen Primus live 6 times!!! They are one of if not the most unique band out there!!! Each individual album sounds different from the previous one. Their older stuff is a bit on the heavier side, but still is all about that Primus funk!!! They are definitely one of the most eccentric bands in the music industry today!!
