He needs to listen to the same version we heard on the radio back in the day. In my opinion, the original is usually the best. Remakes come about through an artists admiration for the original, and even then, popularity comes down as a matter of personal taste.
I agree, you have to check out her breakout hit "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". She's quoted as saying: "It's a perfect song. It's the kind of song that has two unique & distinct qualities: it tells a story, & it has lyrics that mean something." "I wish more songs I had chosen had moved me the way that one did. I've loved [most] every song I've recorded, but that one was pretty special."
Roberta Flack won the Grammy Awards Record of the Year two years in a row. First, at the 1973 Grammys for First Time Ever I Saw Your Face then for Killing Me Softly.
Roberta Flack's duets with Donny Hathaway in the 70s are really special. They include "The Closer I Get to You", and "Where Is the Love." Now, Donny Hathaway is someone you really should check out. He was an amazingly gifted singer. His versions of "A Song For You" and "Someday We'll All Be Free" are transcendent! 😊 Sadly, as is too often the case, he died tragically in 1979 at 33 years of age, after falling from his 15th-floor room in New York City's Essex House hotel. RIP Donny ❤
I like the studio version better, too. But you can listen to that anytime. To see her in person singing it live would have been an absolute privilege, though
Roberta Flack is one of the greatest voices ever. Others have mentioned “First Time Ever I Saw Your Face”. That song and her delivery of it is something you feel to the depths of your soul. Pure greatness. I recommend the studio version of that one for the full effect.
What a crescendo. Don McClean impressing someone so much that they wrote a beautiful testament to him. That was delivered with utter soul and perfection by Roberta. All those forces joining together to create a masterpiece.
This song was written from the reaction to Don McLean's song Vincent among other songs of his. Vincent was also Tupac's favorite song, his sister played it in the hospital the night he died according to a news report.
The song that inspired this was 'Empty Chairs' which is about the end of a love affair and obviously Lori felt he could have been singing about her and her pain.
I'm a 64 year old disabled Army Vet, loved both Roberta and Don but this is the first time I have heard of the connection. Thank you so much for educating me. This is a song that's hard to forget.
As everyone is saying, The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face is absolutely a must. And I agree with the person who said the studio version would have been better for you to hear first. Love Roberta, such a sultry voice. Peace
I just listened to Lori's recording. She and Roberta have two very different voices. Lori strikes me as a quintessential 70s voice. Roberta takes it and like anyone who covers someone else's work, makes it her own. That's the trick with covering someone else's songs. Thanks BP for giving a shout-out to the writers of this song, sometimes they are the unsung heroes. Without these talented people writing these melodies, harmonies, and lyrics, a lot of singers who don't write their own stuff would not have much to do. The singers and the songwriters both deserve our respect.
You've never heard any song like Roberta Flack singing The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face. You are left speechless. And, it was played full length on the radio when it was released. No one could talk, you just listened. You were in awe.
My introduction to Roberta Flack was this song in 1973, by my brother (I was 15 yrs old), Brooklyn New York. She's one of the best vocalists EVER!!! Saw her in concert in the early 1980's in Toronto, she's a total dream. Not a bad song in her catalogue. My brother introduced me to Marvin Gaye's music at about the same time as well.
I was 12 and still in primary school in Melbourne Australia and loved this the first time that ai heard it. I studied classical piano at the time and could play this by ear back then. Beautiful song!
I love her voice❤ I heard her sing this before the fugees… and while I love their version of this song, there’s some thing pure and beautiful about the way Roberta does it.
Yup, gotta hear "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" - what a fantastic rendition by Roberta Flack! First became familiar with this song from Clint Eastwood's movie "Play Misty for Me". ("Misty" was the first film Eastwood directed back in 1971). I was waaaay too young to see it then but saw it as an adult many years later. "Fatal Attraction" before "Fatal Attraction."
@@mariajobson739 well the Wrecking Crew were the first call musicians in Los Angeles and worked in many different recording studios around LA.....Mussel Shoals was a recording studio only.....a lot of the songs he reacts to it was the Wrecking Crew doing the music tracks.....
Al B. Sure covered this song. His entire 1st album was crazy. Errry track. He's a great producer & song writer. He wrote Jodeci's song Forever My Lady for Kim Porter. Al & Kim were married & had their 1st son Quincy. Beautiful song. Roberta's son Bernard Wright had a song called Who Do You Love in the 80's. It's still 1 of my favorite songs.
Roberta Flack is a QUEEN!Next up is The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face! The most amazing love song of all time! Gladys Knight is another QUEEN,Midnight Train to Georgia!
Love me some Roberta. As I mentioned in another post she had some panty droppers. This is considered the best version. Roberta dropped this in 72. Fugees dropped theirs in 90s. Roberta performed this with them in 97. That video is available on the RU-vid. No one ever heard of Lori whatever her name was
I remember 1973 hearing Roberta Flack over and over again singing "Killing Me Softly". I was doing my military service then, and everyone listened to this.
I loved this, I first heard it in a film, " play misty for me " with Clint Eastward, and ran to the record shop to order it, in the UK. Love Roberta Flack ❤
I got fulll body chills when i read the title. Clicked immediately for one of the greatest songs ever written, along with The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.
The two most beautiful songs ever recorded are Roberta Flack first time ever I saw your face... the studio version... and the Righteous Brothers Unchained Melody.... Great reaction. Thank you.
BP and commenters, I'm 73 years old and have been listening to Roberta Flack since she debuted in '72. She's been one of the best female singer's ever. I'd like to list her best songs that many of you may not know about. 1) Only Heaven Can Wait (Duet with Donny Hathaway) 2) And So It Goes 3) More Than Everything (Duet with Peabo Bryson 4) Tonight I Celebrate My Love For You (Duet with Peabo Bryson) 5) Set The Night To Music (Duet with Maxi Priest) 6) Feel Like Making Love 7) Making Love (Great song!). Roberta also sang the song "This Side Of Forever" in the Clint Eastwood movie "Sudden Impact." NOTE: Maxi Priest had a great hit song named "Close To You".
Roberta’s version is what I grew up with in the 70’s and would sing it all the time. Back when we wore out records. Then when Lauryn sang it with the Fugees I was blown away how great she did. I love the Fugees version, but Roberta and her beautiful voice that captivated me as a very young boy, nothing better.
We saw Robert Flack live several years ago on the South Terrace of the Biltmore House in Asheville. She was born in Black Mountain just east of Asheville, and grew up in Arlington, VA. What a show she put on for the hometown folks. Her version of Ewan MacColl's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is just incredible.
So many artists who simply stand and sing with beautiful vocals, but don't dance around and gyrate, never reach the broader audience or the next generation. So glad you reacted to this!
I fell in love with Roberta Flack after the release of First Time Ever I saw Your Face. She is one beautiful talent. I've bought every album ever since.
This story is really about what it takes to create gold. It reminds me of how Dolly Parton wrote the song "I will always love you" then she heard Whitney Houston's version of it over the radio. I guess we are grateful that song writers allow their songs to leave their nest. In time through another singers interpretation it is transformed into something so memorable, that we would have sworn that the version we know was the original. Thank you for sharing the history of this song. Knowing it has made me appreciate all the people who helped to make it possible. The next time I hear Roberta Flack sing it, will remember how none of us are alone while we are creating.
I remember when I first heard this song as a young girl. I fell instantly in love with it. I thought it was one of the most beautiful songs I'd ever heard.
Written by Ewan MacColl an English folk singer-songwriter, Socialist activist. His daughter Kirsty MacColl also singer-songwriter sang with the Pogues on ‘Fairytale of NewYork’.
My parents would play Roberta on their Hi-FI system when I was a kid. I stayed in my room with my JVC boombox listening to ACDC/IronMaiden/Ozzy/etc.....but the beauty of her voice did seep into me. Great voice!
She became known worldwide in 1971 due to her version of "The First Time Ever I saw Your Face" being featured in Clint Eastwood's "Play Misty for Me", a thriller he directed and starred in. Eastwood takes his music very seriously and chooses songs carefully for his films. He is a great pianist himself. You need to react to that one of hers.
Wow!!!! Roberta and Barbra the same day. Two of the very best ever. And this is Roberta's song. Nobody else can do it like her. You might want to check out "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face".
This was a big hit for Roberta and yes it was written about Don. A few years earlier in 1971 another hit song written by the late, great Leon Russell and Bonnie Bramlett titled “Superstar” was released by the Carpenters (another hit for them)… same type of vibe lyrically and musically, that one needs a listen too!
Fun fact: I used to work at the Broadway Arcade in NYC in the 80's and 90's and Roberta came in quite frequently and her favorite game at the time was Centipede.
OH, MY!!! I used to try SO HARD to sing this song like Roberta, in my teens.....one of my FAVS from back in the day...or, her First Time Ever I Saw Your Face!! SO, SO GOOD!!! ENJOY, BP!!! HUGS!
