Too many singers today think that just belting, being loud, doing runs the whole song is selling the song. No, the quietness, the strength, the storytelling, the drawing you in to listen to every word. That is the power.
No one could have said that better. Maybe it should be required for aspiring singers to listen to some of the legends who could stop people in their tracks, hanging on every word, every breath. It doesn't get any better. The power in stillness. Another great song from Patsy is Faded Love. It haunted Patsy's husband after the plane crash that killed her. He played it over and over, telling friends "I can hear her take a breath at the end. How can she be dead?"
That's why I prefer Dolly Parton's original version of *"I Will Always Love You"* over Whitney's version and why I prefer Carol Kings jazzy version of *"Natural Woman"* over Aretha's version, now I love all 4 versions, and Aretha was the original version that was released, even though Carol and her husband wrote the song.
And possible worse. They think hitting perfectly square on the note is correct and desirable, which is why music sounds so drained of all feeling. Being slightly flat or sharp is not an error that needs to be fixed; those small errors is why a voice sounds emotional and if you tune that out in post you get something bland and emotionless.
At 13, Patsy was hospitalized with a throat infection and rheumatic fever. She said after she recovered she had this booming voice. 1973, she was the first female solo artist inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. On the night Patsy premiered "Crazy" at the Grand Ole Opry, she recieved three standing ovations.
Crazy, Sweet Dreams, I Go out Walking (after Midnight), I Fall to Pieces, etc were all absolute jewels from the wonderful, legendary Country singer Patsy Cline.
Have you noticed how so many 'old time' singers just stand and sing, letting the song and the voice do the work. And compare how modestly the women dressed in those days compared with today's singers. This is such a beautiful song.
I don't know about that. Dolly Parton has always said it takes a lot of money to look that cheap... :) Check out clips from the TV show "Beste Zangers" for other singers who rely on voice and connection to the audience. Each season they invite a mixed group of Dutch talent to perform each other's most-loved songs. One year, that included operatic baritone Henk Poort performing "Phantom of the Opera" with Floor Jansen, lead singer of the metal band Nightwish.
@@HobDobson Fair point. But Patsy predates Dolly. I think the comparison is most apt to the big band singers and the likes of Rosemary Clooney, Doris Day and Connie Francis.
Patsy is the QUEEN of Country,..even though she's been gone for so long. RIP Patsy. I've never met anyone who doesnt love this song and the lady who sings it.
Patsy was a country star and best friends with Loretta Lynn. She was in a terrible car crash, and in this video, her scars are healing from plastic surgery. Patsy died as a young woman when her plane crashed into a mountain. Someone in the business told her slow ballads were her best thing. You would have liked her dude. The lady was a force, and way ahead of her time. ❤
@margaretswearingen2371 You didn't read my entire post. I said the scars on the video were from her brothers terrible car crash, but she died when her plane hit a mountain.
Just for historical accuracy, her plane didn't go into a mountain as portrayed in the movie Sweet Dreams. That was for dramatic affect. Actually, it went down in a forest. In the unlikely event that you find yourself in the area, the address of the site is 2904 Mt Carmel Rd, Camden, TN
The world said, 'no. It can't be over' when she passed so you're not alone BP. Loretta Lynn couldn't believe it because they had plans for the day she found out the plane went down. She was only 30, had a husband and 2 small babies. So sad.
Didn't Loretta name one of her daughters Patsy? I'm thinking she was pregnant with twins when Patty died? I could be totally wrong because its been awhile since I've seen the movie.
Loretta Lynn was her best friend. The song was written by Willie Nelson. She had been hospitalized right before see the band on her head hiding stitches. She died in plane crash soon after.
This woman is a country icon! One of the early break out female artists, she became incredibly popular and tragically died in a plane crash. I believe she was good friends with Loretta Lynn (another country singer worth checking out) and Loretta did a tribute album to Patsy.
She did straight country for a couple of years and it was mostly unremarkable. Her last two albums someone figured out her voice was magic and put the jazz vibe behind it. That has kept her alive for the last 70 tears. No exaggeration her voice is top 5 female.
I'm 70 years old and have loved Patsy since the first time I heard her sing! Truly one of the greatest voices of all time. Please check out; "I fall to pieces", "He called me Baby all night long", "He's got you', "Sweet Dreams". You can't go wrong . . .
The one and only Patsy Cline ! She could belt yodel cry in a single line . She was still recovering from a car accident ( that’s what the band is , the tv people didn’t want to show her scar. Like we would have cared about that . Her music is on every decent jukebox everywhere. WALKING AFTER MIDNIGHT-SWEET DREAMS- I FALL TO PIECES are among her hits
She was the first crossover. This woman could sing a ballad like no one else. An incredible talent whose light was extinguished way too soon. RIP Patsy your music lives on.
This is one of those songs that cannot be done again. Patsy Cline singing "Crazy" ranks up with Judy Garland singing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." Both are perfect and cannot be improved upon.
Today kids need to really listen to the music from the past, I taught our son to listen to all music and he now is passing that on to our Grandchildren. I love this because they to will pass it onto their kids. Love me some Pasty Cline!!
Patsy Cline is an icon!!! Her music 🎶 is off the charts!! But passed away way too soon.. that clip is over 60 years or more.. And she still graces us with her singing because of you young people for keeping it alive today.. thank you!! Every song is heaven❤❤
Certain singers ' voices always make the hair on the back of my neck stand up because they are just SO incredible. Patsy's is one of them. And there has never been anyone SINCE who's voice comes even CLOSE to sounding like her.
"What IS this?" ---- It's the torchiest of torch songs. And you're right, knowing that she is restraining the power in her voice makes the performance even more powerful.
Patsy was one of a kind. She also crossed over stations that were not country. She was gone way too soon. And yes, she was definitely a country artist.
Patsy Cline (born Virginia Patterson Hensley; September 8, 1932 - March 5, 1963) was an American singer. She is considered one of the most influential vocalists of the 20th century and was one of the first country music artists to cross over into pop music.[8][9] Cline had several major hits during her eight-year recording career, including two number-one hits on the Billboard Hot Country and Western Sides chart.
I lived in Winchester, Va until I retired in 2022. Patsy was our hometown hero. They made her home into a museum and she is buried there. She’s a legend.
My family and I live just 25 miles from her birthplace in Gore. Our daughter was born in Winchester, and I work in Winchester. She was a long-distance cousin of my mother's stepfather who was a Hensley.
The look on BP’s face says it all. Patsy Cline never fails to put goosebumps on my arms every time I hear her sing. Legend. Icon. A rabbit hole worth exploring.
I absolutely LOVE Patty Cline and have all my life!! And im pretty sure the background singers are The Jordanaires who were the background singers for Elvis Presley!! 🎙🎶✌
That is indeed the Jordanaires singing backup and the great Floyd Cramer on the piano. Hard to imagine that level of legendary in the same place at the same time today
Patsy is considered to be the most influential female singer of the 20th century. She was the first female cross over artist to hit both country and pop charts. She only had an 8 year career as she died in a plane crash at the ago of 30.
I grew up with Patsy's music. This was one of her biggest hits & I still love it. And NO electronic adjustments - just pure voice, like the Righteous Brothers, Drifters & other greats.
Always a kick to watch people hear Patsy Cline for the first time. Usually 5 to 10 seconds in they know they are listening to perfection. For those of us old enough to remember and to have heard the great natural voices of the 40's and 50's and 60's she was a star among them. Tragic to lose her at 30.
This song takes me back to my Grandmas kitchen. There's a pot roast in the oven, the house smells amazing and she's cutting the tomatoes she picked out the garden. I can still hear her singing along beautifully. Thanks for the memory. ❤
My daughter was born in 92' she played my Patsy Kline greatest hits cd often. Always started with announcing ladies and gentlemen please welcome Miss Patsy Kline with her little wave to her make believe audience I past away in 2020. God what I wouldn't give to see that sweet little performance again.
She was/is 100%pure country, was best friends with Loretta Lynne, and was one of the hearts and souls of old country music. She sang effortlessly, and mesmerized you. R.I.P. Patsy, and Loretta ( who named 1 of her twin daughters after her), and all of the other older genres of country music who have left us.
Yes, this was what country used to be. Patsy is a legend and was (and still is to many) the all-time queen of country music. Her voice is as haunting as it is captivating - and she knew it and knew how to use it.
She was one of Loretta Lynn's best friends and passed away in a plane crash. I imagine she and Etta James would have been awesome doing a few songs together. Walkin' After Midnight is a great one by Patsy. She's Got You, I Fall To Pieces...... her voice is amazing.
Patsy Cline is a Legend!!! She sang ""BLUE" You should listen to. Decades later LeAnn Rimes sang at age 13yrs old. Everyone said it was too Big of a song for such a young girl...but she nailed it!! Patsy & Loretta Lynn are Phenomenal in Country Music too this day. You should LISTEN to "BLUE " By both PATSY & LeAnn ,as well as "COAL MINERS DAUGHTER" Loretta Lynn!!!❤ ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Sorry to offer you a correction but I believe Blue was written for Patsy but she died before she was able to record it. Decades later it was offered to LeAnn Rimes to sing.
@@Sweetfarmers Good with the correction, but neither is true. Bobby Mack wrote and recorded the song in the 50s, 58 I believe. He didn't write it for anyone (nor with Pasty in mind). Leann was the 3rd person to cover the song after Bobby first released it in the 50's. I believe Kenny Rogers did a version in the 60s. When Leann debut with the song, Country Radio started with the Pasty comparisons, and then the story took shape from there, it was completely fabricated.
Patsy was from Winchester, Virginia. Her songs were powerful! She had a turbulent relationship with her husband. As a result you could hear the frustration and regret in her songs. She died way too soon at the age of 30 in a plane crash March 5, 1963 the year I was born. If you enjoyed this one there are many more just a mesmerizing as this one!
DEFINITELY Classic Country! Patsy was one of the OG Country Queens! Timeless!!! One of the reasons I LOVE watching your reactions, being completely new to rock and country) is that it refreshes my appreciation. I grew up with this music in my house from day ONE...lol! So, I think I get complacent to how pure Patsy's voice actually was. Watching your reaction and seeing your expressions and hearing your analysis reminds me!
Patsy Cline is my all time favorite female singers and in my opinion, the greatest voice of all time. She was a Winchester, Virginia native and tragically died in a plane crash on March 5th, 1963 near Camden, Tennessee. The crash took her life, along with Cowboy Copas, Hawkshaw Hawkins and pilot Randy Hughes. The memorial there is absolutely magical and I would recommend it to any music fan. RIP queen ✌️🖤🎶
In my younger insane years, espesinally when the sunsets my mom would play Patsy Cline to calm me... Then she took me to see this lady in concert... She has several hits...
