Reactors shocked that in the 60s, 70s, 80s we actually listened to music that talked about sex and drugs. 😂 Cracks me up every time. Try The Police “Don’t Stand So Close to Me.”
same face as if he just found out the girl he's on a date with at her house has herpes or something 🤣 he doesnt want to react in any positive way after 'the younger kind' line lol
He's 25 and fell in love with a 17 yr old "Sharona". They dated for four years and, were engaged though never married. They stayed friends. She visited Fieger frequently while he was dying of cancer. She is now a realtor in LA.
"The Knack's lead singer Doug Fieger wrote the song for the then-teenager who would become his girlfriend, Sharona Alperin. Fieger died last month... Alperin, who stayed friends with him, was one of the people at his side during those last days." Excerpts from "The Woman Behind 'My Sharona'" an interview with her on All Things Considered in 2010: " I was madly in love with my boyfriend at the time, and so it took a year for me to leave my boyfriend." Alperin remembers the day when she first heard "My Sharona" - before she and Fieger were an item. "One day, on my lunch break from my clothing store, I went to their [The Knack's] rehearsal," she says. "And I saw maybe Burton [Averee] or Doug [Fieger] say, 'Should we play it? Should we play it? All right, let's play it for her.' And I sat down. Cut to: I'm driving back to the clothing store, and I'm thinking, 'Did I just hear a song with my name in it?'" The cover art of the single "My Sharona" actually features Alperin posing in a revealing tank top and tight jeans. For some time, she was famous in her own right. "That was, like, my normal outfit, what I wore all the time, by the way," she says, laughing. "I guess I didn't look at myself as a celebrity, but people were very excited when they met me. And I remember going on tour, and seeing sometimes people dress up. And I'd say, 'What are you dressed up as?' And they would say, 'Sharonas.' "Not everybody knew that Sharona was a person, or they thought maybe it was a thing. I think in Japan, they might have thought it was the male organ - that's what I heard." Fieger and Alperin eventually got married to separate people, but they remained in touch. Fieger died on Valentine's Day this year, but Alperin says she went to see him frequently in his final months. "A lot of his idols, people that meant so much to him in the music industry, came to pay their respects to him," she says. "And it was really beautiful."
I'm here to change your mind man! I was 27 when I met this girl, and fresh out of a 5 year marriage, I was lonely so asked her out. First thing on my mind other than her, was the age as I knew she was young. She stated she was 18, but a friend later told me she was 17! I'm like WHOA! I called her, and asked if she'd mind bringing an ID to our date, and she said sure. She did bring the ID, she was 18, and we've been married now for 35 years so never judge a book by it's cover as they say! 👍✌🗽
"Dad Brain" as i call it, is what you have, especially as you have two little girls. It's that super protective side you didn't know you had until you become a father xxx
Doug Fieger was 27 when My Sharona hit #1 on the charts in 1979. He was from Detroit,MI and the band was founded in 1978 and was from L.A. California. Doug was 25 when he met 17 year old Sharona Alperin and inspired him to write this song.He passed away on Valentines Day 2010. R.I.P. Doug
BP, Sharona was a real person. The lead singer did fall in love with her and there was an age gap of around 7 or 8 yrs. She was 17 when they started dating and they were together for a few years. I think they may have gotten engaged or married but I'm not sure about that. They broke up tho.
No she was 17 when they met.....he didn't start dating her for over a year. He did however they to ask her on a date lots of times during that year. Fieger was 25 and she was 18 when the began dating. People always try to make it sound worse than it is. I still think the age gap is a bit much.....but that's just me. Nothing creepy about it in truth.they were both adults so it just comes down to my personal distaste rather than a moral thing.
@@thomasdalby8420 I didn't think it mattered if she was 17 when they dated. I wasn't passing judgement at all. The age of consent in many states is 16 or 17. I'm sorry if you read more into my post than what is in my heart.
@@karensilvera6694 no not passing judgement either....hell I am British and the age of consent here is 16 so it matters little.just pointing out that the pair were not some dirty clandestine thing.in fact the pair were friends until he died.no bad blood.its just that people see 17 and start raging. I knew you hadn't done so but I suspected someone would read your post and start. Unnecessary impotent rage bores me so I thought I would head it off before it happened haha.
And I was 16 dating a 23 yr old ,right? Not raped...parents knew it was fine. The worse thing you can do too is be over protective of the girls( the boys always get to do what they want) . I've known girls in school or just even 19, 20 and they were raised so sheltered that they're the ones that had things happen because they didn't know enuf about the world ,TOO naive and easily preyed upon.
@@thomasdalby8420 TY for the in-depth explanation. I personally don't have a problem with 17/18-year-olds dating 25-year-olds. The song made the age thing sound really creepy to me...like little kid/grown-up creepy...if you know what I'm saying.
I just literally had one of those moments when you actually pay attention to the actual lyrics ..😳😳 that you never heard growing up listening to the song 😂
"My Sharona" is about Doug Fieger's real-life love affair with Sharona Alperin, who inspired the song's two-month writing process. Fieger, the band's lead singer and rhythm guitarist, met Alperin when he was 25 and she was 17, and they dated for four years. Fieger said he fell in love with her immediately, and that she was inspirational and moved him on a basic level. The song's production and guitar-bass combination also reflect sexual tension.
It's amazing how having daughters changes men's outlook on things. I was 19 when this song came out. I only sort of heard the lyrics and never saw this video. When this was written, Sharona Alperin, the actual person who was the song's subject, was 17 years old.
I think the difference between older stuff like this & more modern music is not only did the audience view this stuff as fantasy (not reality), but lyrics were more of a secondary characteristic of most any song. Today, most, like yourself, are more lyric focused. Stuff feels more like relatable poetry behind a beat in modern music. Back then, I think it was more melody & harmony.
Rock and Roll singers have always sang about teenage girls... Billy Idol's Rock the Cradle of Love... Stray Cat's Sexy + 17... KISS's Christine 16... Neil Diamond's Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon... etc.
Oh wow! Yes, it definitely was. Miss those days. Billy Squire was also played a lot when I went to the rink. I wonder, has BP reacted to Billy Squire, yet?
I have fond memories of The Knack and the one and only time I became an "accidental" groupie. I was about 16 when the song came out, and they were doing a concert in my town, so a friend and I went to see them. It was a great concert! When we left the Coliseum, we just happened to leave the exit nearest where the bands left the arena. We stopped to talk to some other 16-17 yr old girls and guys that we met at the concert. About that time a couple of security guards walked by and one of them said to the other, "Just a bunch of groupies!". We all just looked at each other, and then one of the guys said, "Well, if we've got the name, we might as well play the game!" A minute or two later the limo with The Knack came rolling out. We all proceeded to scream and chase it! They rolled their windows down and started shaking hands with all of the kids. I got to shake Berton Averre's hand! The limo then pulled out of the parking lot. It's probably one of the tamest groupie stories ever told, but it left me with a great memory! I can't hear a song of theirs without thinking about it.
@@Stephanie-ik1vq they put on an absolutely great concert. They had 2 drummers and were in sync the whole time. We were around 21 and wearing our best Joan Jet clothes - ROFL! How crazy 🤣
The band member who cowrote the song said it took about an hour to create it. They recorded the entire album for less than $18,000. In a Freakonomics interview last year, he said of the income derived from My Sharona, "it’s easily over $100,000 a year, and less than, I’d say, $300,000. I still make a very good living off of that one song." What he had to say about the creation of the song: AVERRE: “My Sharona” was one of the first songs that Doug and I wrote together when we started playing the Troubadour. Doug was always saying, “We should have a song that’s like the end of the set, that makes them want us to play an encore.” I was a huge fan of Elvis Costello’s. And the drum breakdown in “Pump it Up” was, like, so … just feral and exciting. I picked up a guitar and I started playing the riff that we know as the “My Sharona” riff. BUH-bah BUh-bah BUH BAH BUH BAH BUH BAH-buh BUH-bah BUh-bah BUH BAH BAH-bah BAH BAH! And I thought, “This is pretty good. I like this.” So, we went back to Doug’s apartment. And Sharona was this young woman and Doug took a shine to her. He just, just off the top of his head, came up with the kind of stuttering, the “m - m - my Sharona.” He was channeling Roger Daltry in “My Generation.” And we cranked it out, you know, I’d say maybe an hour. Best hour ever.
Wikipedia-When Doug Fieger was 25 years old, he met 17-year-old Sharona Alperin, who inspired a two-month-long run of songwriting, as well as eventually becoming his girlfriend for the next four years. Fieger recounted that "It was like getting hit in the head with a baseball bat; I fell in love with her instantly. And when that happened, it sparked something and I started writing a lot of songs feverishly in a short amount of time." Fieger and Averre worked out the structure and melody of the song. Averre was originally averse to using Alperin's name in the song, but Fieger wanted it to be a direct expression of his feelings; Averre ultimately relented. Fieger claimed that "My Sharona" was written in 15 minutes; moreover, it was purportedly mixed in an additional 15 minutes after the recording of the song was made in a single take (not including background vocals). Fieger and Alperin were engaged at one point but never married. In a 2005 interview, Fieger said that they remained "great friends"; additionally, she would visit him frequently as Fieger was dying of cancer. Alperin went on to have a successful career as a realtor in Los Angeles.
Oh Man! lol I can't believe I'm seeing this! I actually saw them in Berkeley in 1979.. They opened for Greg Kihn (who showed up pissy drunk!) They were awesome. That Monday at work in SF Just as talking about them, I looked out and WOAH There was Doug Fieger and Prescott Niles walking down Market Street! I ran out and yelled KNACK! lol They came in and hung out for a few minutes. Their record was JUST about to drop. They couldn't believe anyone already knew them lol They gave me a pin that said "GET THE KNACK." Great memories!
I disagree with anyone & everyone who says that "Good Girls Don't" is a "good song." It isn't (and it is flabbergasting how many people (who know ZERO about song-writing or music) think that it, somehow, "isn't." - I have never been able to comprehend! 🤷🤷🤦). ...However: "Lucinda" is a *BRILLIANT* "deep cut"/album track and, yes: this album, overall, is a gem! WAY better than it gets credit for! [and let's not even get into Bruce Gary's drumming!!!! Kid could take out: Dave Lombardo, Tom Hunting, Lars Ulrich ...pretty much anyone!! 🤪😋😛🤘🤘]
This isn't the worst, by far. "Girl You'll Be A Woman Soon" by Neil Diamond, "You're 16" by Johnny Burnette, "Young Girl" by Gary Puckett & the Union Gap.
When I was a kid in the early 80s my mother bought a tape of Alvin and the Chipmunks that had _My Sharona_ on thar was sung by them. It was released mid 1980. I played it until it died.
I don't know if I'd rate it so high but they were definitely making music that was before thier time and I believe if they had come out maybe 5 years later, they would have been much more successful.
This was one of the 1979 songs that ended the disco era. Styx " renegade", Nick Gilder " hot child in the city", Nick Lowe " cruel to be kind" , the Cars " just what i needed", Rickie Lee Jones " chuckEs in love", 3 Supertramp hits, Led Zeppelin " fool in the rain", all were the songs that put the nail in the disco coffin. From 76 to 79, radio was all about disco
@@justdone1068The Stroke is not dirty song. It is,about the music industry and the "stroking" the egos of the music industry producers/executives for musicians to get their music published and aired on radio without being told what or how the artist was allowed. At the time Billy Squire did this song artists were being manipulated by executives of the industry or record labels. Most think it was a dirty song but it was a misinterpretation. You can easily google it.
The guitar solo coming out the little bridge really was one of the best solos in a early 80s massive hit. And yes, this was very much a weird and creepy song, but it was everywhere when it came out because it had the trifecta for a pop song -- a rhythmic hook, a melodic hook, and a lyrical hook.
Your facial expressions are EVERYTHING!! The first time he said "the touch of the younger kind" your face was priceless. I always got that vibe from this song.
I actually appreciate your "Dad Vibes". I'm a mom and a grandparent so I get it. 😅This song came out when I was 14. Back then I just enjoyed the music, but ignored the lyrics....until now, 😂
My husband went to school with Doug Feiger. They were in bands together. during their school years We saw the Knack in 1980 on tour when we lived in San Francisco. We met Sharona backstage. She was 17, Doug would have been 26. He wasn’t know to be a pervert. Unfortunately he passed away from brain cancer about 15 years ago.
I read an article about this song once and it’s about an underage hot chick that was a real person. In fact, Sharona is like a 60-ish year old real estate agent in California now. At the time I read the article I looked her up online and she’s still hot.
I think this is my favorite song from 1979! An important year for me as I graduated from High School and started College. You're right the lyrics are creepy! It is the music that carries the song and the words "My Sharona" - I have pretty much always tuned the lyrics out.
Lyrics aside, this whole first album was/is amazing. The song writing, clever lyrics and awesome melodies, harmonies, the musicianship, especially the lead guitar and the drummer. The drumming in almost every song is some of the best I've ever heard.
It was entertainingly creepy in *1979.* Still is. Also, local radio stations were dropping like flies and being taken over by corporate radio, who ruled with an iron fist. They wanted to make money, but they were also *way* conservative... *snowflake-like.* They also had a hard time competing with MTV *(1981).* A few years later *(1985),* Tipper Gore, along with fellow “Washington wives”, went on a crusade of sorts against 'explicit' lyrics. Keep in mind that the *1950's* were over run with *'snowflakes':* the fear of rock n' roll, kids moving their hips when dancing, ELVIS THE PELVIS!, White teenagers playing records by 'Negro' performers, beatniks...
1963: 'Louie Louie' by the Kingsmen was almost banned from the airwaves because some *'snowflakes'* couldn't understand the lyrics on the recording and thought they *must* be salacious. Dirty. Oozing with innuendo.
As a female we were VERY AWARE of what we were getting up to. Nobody was crying in their cornflakes the next day saying "He touched me inappropriately!" There was literally a movie called "The Last American Virgin" celebrating debauchery.
Same boat, 52 with a wife that's 12 years younger, and a 5 year old! I laughed a lot at your reaction and maybe it's different for me because I grew up on the song... 🤘🤘
In 1980, “The Chipmunks” (you know, cute little Alvin Simon and Theodore) had an album called “Chipmunk Punk”. Last song on the album was My Sharona and to me it didn’t sound like they changed the lyrics. In my mind I can still hear Alvin singing “I always get it up for the touch of the younger kind” for little kids whose parents would have bought this album for them.
Yeah, it sounds horrible, and it was intended to be shocking. Still he was 25, and Sharona was 17 when they met and they were together for 4 years, and still friends when he died in 2005. I really think 16/17 was not an issue back then. Ted Nugent did something similar (he was 30, she was 17) in the song "Jailbait", which is way more explicit. (Just got to the end and HOLY ISH - yeah creepy!!! LOL)
Wow oh wow does that sound take me back. This and the song Rosanna I’m right back to Panama City Florida with my girlfriends on senior spring break vacation. Love it love it love it. Thank you.
I've honestly been listening to this song literally my whole life & I never have thought anything about it 😂 in fact it always brings me memories of being in the car with my mom jamming & the volume blasting 😂😂 🤷🏻♀️
Parody king Weird Al Yankovic owed his career to The Knack and their 1979 hit 'My Sharona'... When he was still in college, Weird Al was making tapes of parodies to send to radio show 'Dr. Demento'... and he recorded the parody 'My Bologna' on his accordion and it became popular on air... Doug Fieger (vocals/ guitar) of The Knack who wrote 'My Sharona' heard 'My Bologna' and found it hilarious 😂Fieger told his A&R at Capitol Records to sign Weird Al in '79 and release 'My Bologna' as a commercial single... Fieger said that he met Weird Al at a Knack concert and Al showed up w/ a huge bologna 😂 'My Bologna' was released as a commercial single and it sold well... but Capitol Records didn't know what to do w/ a comedy artist like Weird Al and he was dropped shortly after... But that was his start. Weird Al followed it up w/ an accordion spoof of Queen's 'Another one bites the dust' ('Another one rides the bus')... and formed his own live band. Thankfully, Weird Al was signed to a struggling label Scotti Bros. Records in 1983 and he was off and running ... The Knack became a one-hit wonder but 'My Sharona' became a hit again in 1994 when it was remixed & re-released on the soundtrack of Winona Ryder's movie 'Reality bites'.
This song was punishing the airwaves for almost a year. From 1979 and into 198o, you couldn't get away from it. But if this threw you for a loop, just play the other song that revs up the testosterone. It's called GOOD GIRLS DON'T. As a father of two daughters, the devil is in the details. And try this video gem. The group is Romeo Void. The song is called NEVER SAY NEVER. SCHOOL BOY CRUSH should send shivers down.your spine. You have to remember that most rock music was aimed at teenagers and their thoughts about love and sex. The fact that adults are delivering the words and music can make it a bit awkward at times. Ok, Pegasus. Get after it. The next move is ALL yours.
A great song that most who grew up with still love but can confess that it did not age well based on the topic. However, one must understand the era as well. At the time and even decades prior there was an acceptance by some (not all) for older men having relationships with younger girls in their teens or what we would call jail bait. This was common at the time until around the 90's I would say. Many songs were written about underage relationships, including: - The Beatles - "I saw her standing there" - Ringo Starr - "You're Sixteen" - Kiss - "Christine Sixteen" - Winger - "Seventeen" - Stray Cats - "Sexy & 17" Elvis Presley dated a 14 year old Priscilla whom he eventually married. Jerry Lee Lewis, who sang "Great Balls of Fire", dated & married his 13 year old cousin with the approval of her parents. The list goes on and on but the point is that every era has flaws and things we can look back on and think was bad. This generation will as well. As an 80's generation kid I can look back on many of the hair metal and rap songs & videos and think that the songs are great but the videos were definitely an issue because they glamorized slutty woman, using woman and men simply thinking with their dicks. I wouldn't change a thing about it because we were what we were at the time. But we grow as a society & as people and we know better today. It is called evolving.
LOL! I did that too. I got it from Cheech Marin from a Cheech & Chong movie. He was singing it like that when he was driving his van and the song came on. LOL!!!!
My classmates and i changed the lyrics . We never paid attention to theirs. And to this day i still sing along using ours. Th music part is good and no your not tripping, It's creepy that look , and action of thrusting his hips after the change up makes it look like he's a sexual predator. That's what's creepy about it.
1979 The Knack "My Sharona" and Gary Newman's "Car" signaled to me that new music was coming for my generation. I was a preteen then and absolutely loved My Sharona. I probably didn't totally understand it but loved the music. Saw it on some Saturday morning show.
Many of our states allow children at 16 to get married with parental consent and even Mass. allows 14 year olds to marry. It's all a matter of perspective but yeah, everything in 2024 can be perceived as creepy.
Doug Fieger was 25 years old, when he met 17-year-old Sharona Alperin, who inspired a two-month-long run of songwriting, as well as eventually becoming his girlfriend for the next four years. Wikipedia 16 was legal consent then. and they didn't really get going till she was 18. They got engaged but never married and stayed friends till his death a few years back.
Im one of the 65+er's. I totally agree with you. I've heard this song since it came out, great music and beats, that's where it ended for me. I considered them a 1 hit wonder.
At 59 I am seeing this video for the very first time... They didn't have MTV when this song came out. I was in tenth grade. And during the summer we would drive up to the radio station, that was up on the top of the hill. And park..( The boys told us the reception was better up there near the station) where you weren't supposed to park, on the drive there they were always playing this song... What wonderful summer memories! now I get to put the video to that song... I never would have imagined 40 years later. I would be watching a video reaction! What an amazing world do we live in? I would like to add. We were good girls and boys and nothing happened other than good music and a midnight drive.
My first 45 I ever bought from Golden Rod Music Dayton, Ohio late '70s and though I didn't understand everything they were singing I played it and played it over and over and fortunately my parents couldn't make heads or tails about what the Knack was singing and that was a good thing or it would've ended up in the trash as being devil music lol.
I totally understand your "DAD" reaction; with daughters I felt that way too. However, back in '79 when this came out I was in high school and we all just loved it ... yeah ... younger, different me.
I enjoyed your reaction! Being young when I heard this, I just loved the beat and didn't pay much attention to the lyrics. It thrills me to see that father instinct come out. He was 25 and fell in love with a 17 yr old Sharona, 8 year difference. It's okay not to like the song. It's how you feel. I am happy for your daughter.
I was lucky enough to get to meet them in person when they played at our E-club at Kaneohe marine corp air station (KMCAS) Hawaii 2 mo. after they recorded this song 4/79 they even gave me a signed hat with the wings on it.
