The Police have a lot of hits. I'd recommend; So Lonely, Walking on the Moon, Don't Stand So Close to Me, Synchronicity II, Every Little Thing She Does is Magic.

Can't Stand Losing You, and its cover by Steel Pulse
So many gems to choose from, 'Roxanne', 'Walking on the Moon', 'Wrapped around your finger', 'Every breath you take', Don't stand too close to me" to name a few.
Let's not forget that the silly drummer, Stewart Copeland, is a real beast at the drums (Top10/100 - Rolling Stone Magazine) and has composed a lot music/soundtracks for well known movies after the unfortunate breakup of The Police ... Nice reaction as well!
He’s a top guy. He’s just done an incredible interview with Rick Beato, it’s here on RU-vid. Rick has interviewed all 3 members of The Police in the last few months.
For me, it is easily Stewart Copeland, Neil Peart, Danny Carey, John Bonham, Ginger Baker... And I could throw in a ton who are probably arguably interchangeable in the next five or ten or fifteen on a list, but are all easily my "favorites" (Grohl, Hawkins, Portnoy, Taylor, etc).
Notice that Sting is the bass player and singer and band leader. Remind you of a certain 33yo of today? Message in a bottle is from their 3d year, or 2nd album. Their first hits were in their second year/first album: "Roxanne" and "Can't Stand Losing You". In their first year, "Fall Out" was their first single. Their biggest hit? Hard to tell. Maybe said Roxanne or "Don't Stand So Close to Me" or "Every Breath You Take" or "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic". The last one is a special nut case, it is hard to understand how they did that song when you are a musician yourself. It is out of key, it is somehow too fast, and for all that it sounds perfect. How did they to it?
Hate to do it but if I had to pick one I'd go with Every Breath You Take. Again this whole time frame was jr high school for me and we had MTV which the more ya saw it there, the more it meant it was getting exposure. Everything up to Every Breath You Take was appreciated by those who been there since their first, but for radio and airplay Every Breath You Take I would consider their break out. Again I hate pinning it to just 1 track. Yes they are that good :)
Without listening back, maybe they sped parts of the song up on tape bc they were recording separately and needed to tempo-match? Hearing it in my head it just sounds like they're using dissonant intervals for guitar and the vocal harmonies, a 2nd or a tritone. - Edit: I was hearing Synchronicity in my head, Every Little etc is in D major, but there's some detuning in there, maybe a wide chorus pedal on something
@@NotBenCoultry RU-vidr @RickBeato has a breakdown in his What Makes This Song Great series, I believe where he re-engineers famous pop songs. He gets down to the whole song having been sped up in post production. In his Sting interview, he asks him and gets it confirmed.
It reminds me of Philip Lynott. Not of the Boys Are Back in Town so much but as a 3 piece band it started out as. It kind of ties the rythm to the melody in a special way.
@@KozueMegami well, yeah! As long as he is paying Sting to use it then it’s okay. Artists do that all the time. Heck, The Verve hardly makes a penny off their biggest song due to using the better part of a Rolling Stones song with their permission.
@@mattsmith5609 if you get permission from the artist, or if you keep the sample short enough, it would not be considered stealing. There are many artists that are very talented with the use of samples. Ren, himself, uses samples at times and they are so beautifully incorporated into his song that you barely realize they are part of another song.
I will die on the hill that GenX still grew up with the most diverse and greatest music ever. My playlist round the time this was dropped and added to it.........Van Halen, Men At Work, ACDC, Afrikka Bambatta, Public Enemy, Depeche Mode, The Cure, Circle Jerks, Suicidal Tendencies, Jodie Fosters Army aka JFA, Minor Threat. Yep that was my playlist around this time frame. I've always loved all the music of GenX.
Totally agree. I was into late 60s stuff like Iron Butterfly. classic rock 70's, hair metal, 80's pop. I could be listening to Metallica or Culture Club. The music was so diverse.
Dont worry buddy, pretty much all older people die on the hill that the music of their generation was the greatest ever. its like a natural law, that only few are able to break.
not to mention Genx brought you everything from W.A.S.P. to Keith Sweat. Biggie and Pac, both gone way too soon. Not boomers or Millennials, they are GenX. Corey Taylor from Slipknot and Stone Sour....GenX. Maynard James Keenan from Tool, Puscifer, Perfect Circle...GenX.@@smilie-pm9gb
Sting: One of the greatest front-men of all time. Copeland: One of the greatest drummers of all time. Summers: One of the greatest guitarists of all time. The Police has an unmistakable sound, massive talent, massive charisma, massive integrity, and a massive discography of absolute bangers. I don't care what age you are, their music is timeless, so far.
The most played on song to date with 15 million+ plays… It is one of the biggest streaming legacy song on Spotify and with over 1 billion views on RU-vid
By the time the Police released Every Breath You Take they were one of the biggest bands in the world, selling out stadiums globally. This was off their second album when they were still a punk/reggae/new wave fusion. LOVED this period of the band.
They were the biggest band period my man- they were the Beatles of 1980s. They had the biggest tour till that time… Synchroncity was a massive successful album and tour
Amazing 3 piece band. Stewart Copeland is the drummer and he is one of the best ever. He's does a lot of composing now. Sting playing bass and singing...that ain't easy. And Andy Summers, great guitarist. All so accomplished. You really should listen to more of their stuff - they were highly influenced by Reggae and you can hear it in a lot of their early songs. Their biggest hit is Every Breath You Take but I would definitely not start there. Don't Stand So Close to Me, Walking on the Moon, Roxanne are just the 1st three I'd suggest for you. Then moving onto to some of their "later" stuff like Synchronicity. IT's a great band to discover and I'm a little jealous that you get to hear all for the first time :) Have fun!
You should check out some Two Tone (UK Ska, fusion of post-punk british music and Jamaican Ska) from the late 70s, a band to checkout is 'The Specials' and song suggestions 'Gangsters', 'A Message to You, Rudy', 'Too Much to Young' and 'Ghost Town'. You can hear the The Special influences in some of Ren's music. The Police and The Clash where around the same time when they started :)
100% I love the Specials! I was born during their heyday, so I didn't 'discover' them until much later in life, but once I caught on, they became one of my all-time favorite groups. I was also fortunate enough to see their reunion tours after I'd already become a huge fan. They didn't disappoint live either. There are so many great tracks to choose from! Ghost Town, Do Nothing, It's Later Than You Think, Blank Expression, A Message To You Rudy, Too Much Too Young, Doesn't Make It Alright, You're Wondering Now... They are not only ska gods but just great musicians regardless. I highly recommend them.
I bought a bunch of 80s soundtracks this week, and he’s got a song on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 soundtrack. It’s also featured on the blu-ray menu somewhere on the new 4K release.
I saw that when I was looking at the other soundtracks! I didn’t buy it though as I don’t remember the soundtrack to that one very much. Let’s not forget he also went solo under the alias Klark Kent. I always liked his song Don’t Care.
5 albums from The Police (75 million in sales)...The bassist, Sting, is on of the best song writers. All three members are amazing. Rick Beato interviewed them one at a time. GREAT in depth info to The Police.
Stewart Copeland ( the drummer who is american ) founded and named the band , probably inspired by his brother Miles III ( who became their manager ) and his father Miles who was a CIA agent."message in a bottle" was their first hit in Europe , back in 1980 and was from their 2nd LP "Reggata de Blanc" released in 1979 ; hits like "Roxanne" , "can't stand losing you" or "so lonely" hit the charts afterward although they were re-issued from their first LP "Outlandos d'Amour" in 1978
They blew up as a pop, radio, MTV band. Such interesting influences: jazz (Sting’s roots), Ska (Copeland’s beat), guitar riffs (Summers’ many adds). They reached across to alternative, rock crowds, too. And, as a three piece, had a huge sound for arenas.
All 3 artists in The Police, Andy, Stewart and Sting are master class musicians in their own right, combined in this jammin band was extraordinary. They were HUGE in my late teens high-school and college. I even saw Sting's Dream of the Blue Turtles Tour. Awesomeness
This music brings back such great memories. In the mid 80's I met a boy from another town while our families were on summer vacation. All year we mailed a cassette tape back and forth thru the snail mail and each one of us would add recordings to it. It was loaded with songs from the Police.
ALL THREE of these guys are JUST MASTERFUL at their craft!! ...and, I think you HAVE to be when you only have three people in your band!! Sting's vocals and bass....Andy' Summers guitar riffs...and, Stewart Copeland's FANTASTIC drumming....this band was FIRE!!! ...and, I still don't know any other band that has their sound, really.....ENJOY, BP!!! :) HUGS!
You MUST know some songs by The Police. You know. LOLOL I LOVE Sting since I was a kid. My mom listened to The Police and Sting and I just fell in love with him. He really is music genius. This whole album, Regatta De Blanc is awesome.
I had a cassette player in my car way back in the day, and I would blast the Police (and other mix tapes) when I hit the road to see America on my first vacation as an 18 year old adult. One of the (many) best times of my life!
The Police are an amazing band. I grew up listening to them. Every single they released was fire. Sting has a fantastically mellifluous voice, but Stuart Copeland’s drumming is truly genius he writes and composes brilliant music for movies too. Andy Summers is a very original guitar player who has a great deal of emotion in his way of playing, whilst keeping the punkiness in his style. Most people know tracks from the Outlandos D’Amour and Reggatta De Blanc albums, but my favourite album is Ghost In The Machine specifically the track Spirits In The Material World. My favourite single is Roxanne and this track Message In A Bottle.
This is from their 2nd album. Their first hit was probably 'Roxanne', but they have a string of hits. You'll probably recognise 'Every Breath You Take' from it being sampled by Puff Daddy. A lot of different sounds in their songs ranging from punk to rock, and love to incorporate reggae in there too throughout their existence.
Great to see you diving into one of Ren's heavier influences - they are great, but Sting is a living legend another classic Police song is "Walking on the moon" definitely worth hearing to see how Reggae creeps into the music and another enriching Ren puzzle-piece :)
Interesting fact about them; Sting was the band’s song writer. Sting is so talented that he would create these songs by himself, play the bass, guitar and drums as well as sing the songs, record them, then hold on to them until the band was ready to drop another album. Stew said he would hear Sting’s recordings and be like, “he didn’t even need us. By the time Andy and I heard the song it was already good enough to release”. Of course Sting didn’t do that and re-recorded his songs with the band until he was ready to leave them and become a solo artist… and history has shown just how successful he became on his own. The guy is like a musical freak of nature. SOOO talented
The name was because they came up in a punk rock scene. Other popular punk band names that look great on a flyer: "Free Beer", TBA, and "Millions of Dead Cops".
Was lucky enough to see their reunion tour about 20 years ago. My first ever rock concert. Remember being amazed how three guys could totally enthral a stadium full of people. The drummer played a contraption made of hanging bottles and other stuff (hope I remember this right), for "Caravan" I think - it was magical.
Synchronicity II is probably my favorite song, but then I'm always happy to hear Every Little Thing She Does is Magic. And there's a dozen other songs in between. 😊 Much love from Maine and keep doin what ya do ❤
Was able to see them live on the Synchronicity Tour around 1985. Love their music. I had a cool 10th grade English teacher, Mr. Appleton. He let us study the lyrics to many of their Synchronicity album songs in class. Epic!!
45 years old!!!!! 1979. We had good stuff. I think their first big song was "Roxeanne". They were totally unique. No one sounded like them. I know you have to know "Every Breath You Take" it's timeless, from 1983. Video is black and white, Diddy sampled it, but The Police are a classic early 80s rock/post punk band.
This song shows how The Police are the masters of repeating at the end of songs. I can listen to them ending a song for another minute or five. Such skilled musicians. Each repetition is so different! 🎧 💓 🎶
Roxanne, Every breath you take, walking on the moon and so many others. Honestly I love all their songs. I would listen to their albums without ever skipping a song.
I'm sure you're familiar with "I'll be missing you" by Puff, Faith Evans, 112; that song samples "Every Breath You Take" by The Police. I've listened to The Police for years but till now didn't realize how much you can hear the inspiration in Ren's style. Keep up the great content BP.
I loved these growing up. Quadraphinia was on our video recorders for years. My mum brought me up dancing around the house to ska, rock, reggae, soul, Motown. Our home was built around good tunes 👌🏻
“Roxanne” was their first big song (It wasn't their first single, but it was the song that got them really well known), and in the same year (1978) they released "Can't stand losing you", which was another really popular, big song by them. It's hard to actually say what their biggest song was, they had so many massive ones, but those 2 will def be on anyone's list of big Police tunes. Personally I really love "Walking on the Moon"
I love seeing people reacting to music outside of their comfort zones and experiencing more than just what they are used to. I am lucky in that I grew up in different parts of the country with many different friends with different tastes in music. I grew up in Texas and was exposed to country, grew up in Washington at the height of grunge, grew up in a Christian household that (at the house) was only exposed to either Christian music or Oldies (50s-70s), grew up in the 80s listening to timeless songs from that decade. All music should be experienced and celebrated. Keep up the wonderful work.
'Roxanne' was there first big song after being re-issued in 1979 reached No.12 in the UK charts, but 'Message in a Bottle' was their first UK chart No.1
I don't just appreciate your take but I'm 60. Your take on this took me to the next level! I've always loved it but you made me realize why! Thank you.
The reason why when you listen to a lot of these old/classic rock songs you're like "Damn I've heard this bit before! Where?!" is because rap/hip-hop samples A LOT of classic rock songs. There's at least like 20 different rap songs if not more that sampled this track. Puff Daddy sampled "Every Breath You Take" also by The Police for his farewell song to Biggie. On a side note though, while the song "Every Breath You Take" sounds like a love song, and A LOT of people misinterpret it as such, Sting said that it's one of those songs that embarrasses him because the song is actually about a guy stalking someone, not a dude in love.
I was lucky enough to see The Police 3 times here in Australia. The first two times at a average sized venue. The third and last time was an outdoor arena style venue on their farewell tour in 1983. It was an all day event with 6 other support acts. I love you too react to Roxanne which I would say was their breakout song. Possibly their biggest hit that you may even recognise is Don't Stand So Close To Me. But that's one of many hits the Police had in their fairly short existence as a band.
There will be a number of Police songs that will be in your subconscious - they were massive. Saw them promote this their 2nd album Feb 1980 in Christchurch New Zealand - what an amazing sound for three people on stage.
To try and answer some of your questions, as I understand it The Police were named by the drummer, Stewart Copeland, who named it as a sort of reference to his father, who was a CIA officer. Message in the Bottle is from their second album and yes they were on their way up at this point in their career. By this time they were doing smaller concert halls. They would ultimately finish off their careers, as The Police, in stadiums. I would say their first major hit was Roxanne, off their first album Outlandos D'Amour. Message in the Bottle was on their second album Reggatta De Blanc. Both albums are a great look into their earlier music which fused Rock, Punk and Reggae. The Police would follow up these prior releases with their third album Zenyatta Mondatta, which is probably my favorite album. The most popular song on this album is probably Don't Stand So Close To Me but I was always partial to Driven To Tears. Sting always incorporated meaningful lyrics into his song writing by using situations that were going on in the world at the time. The message I got from Message In The Bottle was loneliness and coming to the realization that there are millions of other people that are feeling exactly the same. Unfortunately The Police had a short life span, as did many bands in that era. They broke up in 1984 after only seven years together. Synchronicity was their final album that went 8x platinum.
They were my fav band back then, and Message In A Bottle is prob my #1. Edging out deep cuts like Does Everyone Stare, Contact, Omegaman, Darkness, Miss Gredenko
Every Breath You Take is an obvious suggestion but I won’t say why, I will leave that for you to experience when you listen to it and another suggestion is Roxanne as it’s the one Ren references in Losing It
I agree. I was also kicking up my heels in those days and "Roxanne" and "Every Breath you take" are the songs that made an American girl fall in love with an English band. I've followed Sting ever since and never been disappointed.
If you listen to Roxanne, you can hear the influence on Ren's vocal technique in Screech's Tale when he sings the line "Screech, dear boy, WHERE DID HE GO?" ❤
HUGE catalogue Roxanne one of the first big hits Don't Stand So Close to Me Every Little Thing She Does is Magic Synchronicity 1 and 2 Every Breath You Take Wrapped Around Your Finger (this last one is where you can really tell Sting used to be an English teacher... who else would reference the Scylla and Charybdis in a rock and roll song?)
More memories from my 20s... This song was played every hour on the radio when it was hot circa late 1979/early 1980. One of the Police (bunch of Aussies) early hits. This video was common to what I was seeing on MTV, back when MTV still did music videos. Great reaction as always... I really enjoy seeing you get off on the songs that I grew up on. Seeing the light in your eyes and the smile on your face when it connects with you. Keep on doing it BP, you're the BEST! OBTW, one of my favorite Police hits was Don't Stand So Close to Me... great "story song".
The video is a mix of soundcheck, backstage and live footage shot at the Lyceum on 06-17-1979. "Message in a Bottle' is a good song. That can move me. I like the idea that while it's about loneliness and alienation it's also about finding solace and other people going through the same thing. The guy's on a desert island and throws a bottle out to sea saying he's alone and all these millions of bottles come back saying, So what So am I! I like the fact that the whole deal is clinched by the third verse. It makes a journey." - Sting, Q, November 1993
Sting - All This Time dvd is a must watch. He gathered musicians at his home in Italy to remake a bunch of songs. The day before the final concert at his home, 9-11 happened. It captures all of them debating on whether they should even play. It is a fascinating dvd.
Sting really was a teacher and apparently this song is based on his personal experience. The shirt he is wearing is 'The Beat' an English Ska band from the early 80s. You could check out 'Save it for Later' and 'Mirror in the Bathroom'.
You HAVE to listen to more of The Police. They were serious musicians, and the drummer is a hugely respected top drummer and composer. Then take a listen to some of Sting’s music as it is superb and so varied. His solo album Dream of the Blue Turtles is seriously different in styles and is fantastic. I have all the music both Police & Sting. He’s a storyteller writer. Some of his songs really go on a journey..
There was a The Police album (possibly a greatest hits album) in the collection of CDs my dad would pack in the car whenever we went on summer holiday to the south of france. So this song just transports me back to the summers of my youth and its incredibly comforting and nostalgic. Even as an adult now, I love The Police.
Wrapped Around Your Finger is my favourite song from them, and one of my most favourite songs ever! Listening to this album zin the car on cassette with my bestie driving back from Sydney to Melbourne in 1993 when were young single and had no rsponsxxxalong with Midnight Oil 10 to 1 album. Still have both cassettes. Great memories of great times! So much fun!!
Feel privileged to have heard them on John Peel's radio show on a Sunday evening - my brother searched all over the place get hold of the Roxanne single in the shape of a NY police badge... My band..
Bro - The Police “Every Breath you take” is the most played song 🎵 on the radio to date with 15+ million plays. It is one of the biggest selling singles of all time with 10 million units sold- in my book, the ultimate pop song ever written for radio…
Ren used some of the guitar riffs from Message In A Bottle in his new track, Fred Again mashup. I can’t wait to see REN’s retake! The first time I heard REN…I said yeap that’s guy has The Police influence. Thanks for the reaction.
I love that song, too! (And this one since 1979)!!! Crazy! Also "BRING ON THE NIGHT" (!!!), "Walking on the moon" (all from the album "Regatta de blanc", and "Don`t stand so close to me", "DRIVEN TO TEARS" (Oh, please hear that!!!) both from the album "Zenyatta Mondatta". I promise it`s worth it!...
Probably the best pop/rock band of all time imho. They really fill their own niche though because what are they? Pop? Rock? Punk? Reggae? World Beat? Sounds as fresh and unique today as it did when I first heard them. The Doors and Sublime are another two bands that capture that uniqueness, obviously very different bands, but all carved out their own little patch of ground I would say.
