Oscar winning composer, multi grammy award winning musician, who literally birthed a GENRE of music, on his own, while working as a handyman and engineer at a sound studio in Cleveland... a work arrangement where he specifically was allowed to use the sound equipment only when he was finished his other work, and wound up creating (entirely on his own) the masterpiece Pretty Hate Machine.

The way you fellas reacted to this song, you should DEFINITELY jump down the NIN rabbit hole. Trent is in the group of folks like Maynard (and all of Tool) and Pink Floyd that are great at setting the atmosphere of a song. Trent’s difference is he can make you comfortable with uncomfortable rhythms and beats.

From what I kinda remember during this time, Trent was suffering from severe writer's block when he made this song. His grandmother had passed away from old age between The Downward Spiral album (1994) and The Fragile album (1999), and I think she raised him as her own son, so he was super close with her and he fell into a deep depression. Perfect Drug was his first attempt at making a song working through that depression, and I think Trent says he hates it because the song doesn't represent anything to him - it was just an attempt at making music again. You should check out The Great Below, which was a song he wrote about his grandmother's passing. I think it's what he's said he secretly used as the doorway to not get over his depression, but as a step towards dealing with it =)

Trent Reznor is really a creative genius. On the recorded stuff, everything you're hearing is made by him. When he tours, he invites people to play with him. The stuff he comes up with is really incredible. This song was actually made for the film 'Lost Highway', so this is just what he comes up with for a movie soundtrack. I've been listening to these guys since the mid-90's, and NIN has just continued to make new and amazing music all the way into the present. I think if you guys wanted to get more of his early stuff, the album 'Pretty Hate Machine' is a great place to start with. 'Head Like a Hole', 'Terrible Lie', or 'Sin' are all bangers. And if you want slower/sadder stuff off the album, 'Thats What I Get' and 'Something I Can Never Have' are favorites of mine.

Hey, muh dudes! I'm so glad you two chose to react to this song! It is truly a diamond among the precious gems within Trent's body of work. Personally speaking, I find NIN to be just as iconic and legendary as Tool, probably even more so; and that's not an easy statement to make. You guys could easily dedicate a day each week to NIN reaction videos, and Trent will take you on a wild ride. From album to album, his records are always evolving, interesting, engaging, thoughtful, and a demonstration of the genius he possesses. Strong recommendations include: Down In It Terrible Lie Head Like A Hole The entire 'Broken EP' Mr. Self Destruct Ruiner The Becoming Reptile Somewhat Damaged We're In This Together Please Only Survivalism Me, I'm Not Burn The list goes on.. and on.. and on..

@neuroticgothguy 3 года назад
I'd start your NIN deep dive: Wish ---> Terrible Lie ----> March of the Pigs ----> Closer -----> Hurt ----> Starfuckers, Inc ----> Survivalism there's more but those are good places to start. also Ministry and NIN came onto the scene about the same time or at least within a few years of each other, though Ministry was far more metal than NIN was which meant that they did cross over very often. I don't know if Trent was influenced by Al or not, but Trent is definitely the musical genius of the bunch. also if you're diving into Industrial music, you need to check out Skinny Puppy as they floated in the same circles are these 2. as for songs, i'd say: Spasmolytic ---> Killing Game ----> Candle ---->Process ----> Jaher

Reznor is absolutely a musical prodigy. My favourite thing about NIN is how they make music with sounds that you wouldn't expect to sound good together - music out of noise. Dude even treats his voice as an instrument - "Just Like You Imagined" is a great example, though you might've heard it already on trailers for '300' back in the day. Nine Inch November maybe?

So what I like about Nine Inch Nails is that he is the only musician I've seen who can duplicate the kinds of emotions I grew up with, and I find it comforting. It helps that the music is so complex and fun to listen to.

Reznor makes all of his beats too. Classically trained, he dropped out of the prestigious Julliard School of Music to start a rock band. I've always described his sound as dope beats with rock riffs laid on top of them. "Piggy" "Eraser" Reptile" "Burn" "Somewhat Damaged" "The Wretched" "Just Like You Imagined" "The Four of Us Are Dying" are all worth checking out.

Check out the song Reptile! However, The Downward Spiral is a concept album, so you may want to listen to it in order. More NIN for sure! Definitely got some influence from Ministry as well as Depeche Mode. Trent was at a Mode concert in his younger days and said to himself "This is what I wanna' do for a living." Trent plays EVERY instrument himself and writes all his own music. Only has a band for tours. Check out the band My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult~The Days of Swine and Roses Fun and Funky industrial. I've heard the same about the Nine Inch Nails is the length of the Nails for Crucifixion.

Trent has always produced with Pro Tools and a lot of engineers consider him to be an absolute genius. NIN is probably my favourite band, as dark as it gets, messy, chaotic, beautiful and fragile; all at once. Try "Right Where It Belongs", "Wish" or "Somewhat Damaged". The members of The Dillinger Escape Plan are huge NIN fans (they played full NIN records before they came out to do their show) and also recently Corey Taylor from Slipknot covered live one of his songs. Not to say that Johnny Cash himself picked up the song "Hurt" to make a beautiful cover of it. Johnny Cash interested in an industrial band. That's how good Trent is, musicians can just tell.

1000 Homo DJs was a side project by Ministry. They covered a song by Black Sabbath called Supernaut. Trent Reznor originally covered it but the Ministry one was released first, not sure on the details but both covers are pretty much the same and both awesome! Trent also does cool instrumentals. 'La Mer' is beautiful. Love from Australia

The guitarist started Filter which had the song with the crystal method is worth looking into on the side of NIN. He left the band pretty early as it was Trents baby and he wanted his own and Trent supported that.

To the best of my knowledge, this song has only been played live once. The running joke in the fan community for ages was that they couldn't play it live because the drummer's arms would fall off during the solo.

It’s only recently they’ve been able to perform this live due to the drums, there’s a few you tube videos of this available

One of my favorite songs and music videos from my favorite artist. Trent is a genius. Have you guys done a reaction video for Wolf Like Me by TV on the Radio?

Nine Inch Nails are an absolute beast. So many great songs in many different styles The introspective Hurt and Something I Can Never Have to the brutality of Wish or March Of The Pigs. Then classics like The Becoming or Closer. Have fun dipping into a wonderful catalogue

I saw a video a long, long time ago of Trent saying where the name "Nine Inch Nails" came from. He basically said that he made up a list of names, and the one that didn't suck after a few days was what he went with. But yeah, NIN and Tool are my two favorites, have been for many, many years. Trent is on the same level as the members of Tool, you should definitely do more NIN. I know you've said how Tool has changed over the years, heh... NIN has REALLY changed over the years, would be a fun journey.

It always fascinates me how rappers, who's genre's history is entrenched in sampling, miss out on so much ideas that may be hidden or wide open on other genres

This whole soundtrack is awesome. It's one of my top albums of all time. The Marilyn Manson covers are genius and the instrumentals...just amazing.

Reznor actually produced the soundtrack for Lost Highway. Fucking incredible movie too; one of my favorite David Lynch films.

Same for The Social Network. The music of this movie actually made me research Trent, find NIN and discover a whole world of brutal honesty.

He was into Skinny Puppy, Depeche Mode, Front line assembly, Front 242 and Big Black. And yeah I've used a fax machine before. When when it comes to industrial the true heart of it has to do with a lot of sampling in the field picking up a stick and banging a metal sheet.

There are so many great Nine Inch Nails songs that you could easily have a "Nightly Nails" and react a different Nails song every day and still have content for over a year.
