Mongolians are not the only ones who do throat singing though. Tuvans, Yakuts etc. also have their styles of throat singing. I would recommend you to check out an old Tuvan band named Yat-Kha. As far as i know they were the first ones to really blend these kind of singing with rock/metal sounds.
@@alamaniac There are also a lot of other artists who use throat singing as well. Til Lindemann from Rammstein uses it often, and there is a lot of throat singing in songs from Heilung and other 'viking folk' groups.
But at the end of the day ... what this guy is doing is not an "effect". While I can't imagine the training and skill it takes to do this in a way that makes me want to start sharpening axes - he's doing it. On some of their other songs, you can actually hear it much easier.
one of the best comments I read in some other reaction to this song: "Played this loud as hell.....now my house is on fire, horses are stampeding through my back yard,my Chinese neighbor is building a wall and all the women in the street are pregnant! " :))))
@@Ouwkackemann oh I'm sure there will be killing. Think DutchDude87 was wanting to clarify that it's not a "we'll come and kill you", it's more of a "if you attack us, we'll kill you".
I fell in love with " The Hu " about 2 years ago when I first heard them. All of them are classically trained musicians. This 60 year old woman loves them.
@@conforzo there is an Series on RU-vid from the Hu Titeld "Hu we are". There they talk about their live, trining and growing up in Mongolia. Its amazing cause they are so near to their Fans. They are all fantastically good musicians and very adept at their instruments and Mongolian throat singing
Same here !!! Listen to Beast in Black Blind and Frozen you might like it too..I actually introduced my daughter and son-in-law and they also love them!! Apples don't fall to far from the tree 🤣
Music is a universal language, means, every human would label a sad note, a sad note. You can speak through the feelings with music, thats why it is special.
As someone who is half Mongolian, it is definitely his voice. It is known as throat singing. All the instruments are traditional as they can be. Seen them live and their voices are as amazing as their videos
I saw them in Atlanta back in like November 2019 and holy shit it was fantastic. I got elbowdropped by a coked up groupie in the pit less than ten feet from the drums and it was an absolute blast

Thanks for the translation of the lyrics to a great song I am 69yrs old and after listening to this song I feel like 20 again I'm glad I got the idea of what was being said just from the sounds of it and I hope that we all remember that it's the Human Race in our hearts ❤️ we are the same
“They about to get into some people.” Yeah, the han chinese, Koreans, southeast asians, Persians, arabs, slavs, Indian subcontinent, and a whole lot more, and it ain’t gonna be pretty. The Mongols conquered so hard they lowered humanities carbon footprint. Literally the most metal people that ever lived. Also, small chance yall are direct descendants of the Great Khan himself.
yeah true. while the descendants of khan thing is a bit of a maths curiosity. you are also related to charlemagne, socrates, julius caesar and almost every other great figure of eurasian history. if you go back enough there arent enough ancestors for all of us, so we all have to be descendants of the same people
Mongolian guttural music singer Guttural singing, or also known as diphonic singing, is believed to be over 4000 years old and will have its origin in the area surrounding the present-day Republic of Tuva and southwestern Mongolia, this type of singing allows the human voice to perform up to three types of independent sounds, resulting from a refined technique that mixes various mechanisms of movement of the abdomen, throat, nasal cavity, lips and tongue.
You guys have us, don't worry! We Are here to pick you up...even though I'm talking about morale and not physically... But i think it still counts for something... I hope... And don't worry, the Horde doesn't care if you are disabled! You still get a horse and a bow and get to come with us to the road of victory! It's a must! You Don't get to choose 🥰
I can HONESTLY picture it now: an invading army enters Mongolia, suddenly sees the Mongolian Clans united under Ghengis Khan, then the invading forces say: "Ooohh SHIT!!! Wait...um...I think I left the oven on...um...or maybe I forgot to lock the front door...or...um...WHATEVER, we HONESTLY don't care. We're NOT fucking with those dudes"
The Hu opened a couple shows for Babymetal last year and they were just incredible. Fantastic bill. The song is a war song, and if you turn on captions there's translated lyrics. That is his voice, it's Mongolian Throat singing.
@@DarkSygil666 They played at the Roseland in Portland, then the Paramount in Seattle last October. Great experience. Great combination of groups, the testosterone of the Hu and kawaii of Babymetal. Great when acts compliment each other.
I'm from Poland. In our nacions till nowadays people are scare about Mongols and Tatars. Imagine, it was almost 500-700 years and we still remember battles with Those Riders.
Btw- if your nation battled with them you gain so much power after all. Im history Poland was preparing to their invasions via 200 years. You never know when they come, where they come but only why- to punish, to fight.
So here’s a crazy fact- they sound BETTER live. Saw them in Boston last year and both my son and I left in awe. Worked concert security for 2 years and saw a lot of great shows... they bested them all. Metallica, Elton John, and Iron Maiden shift down to honorable mention status now (although when I get to see Nightwish my guess is this changes again). All 4 lead men can Mongolian throat sing and each has a different tone. 2 drummers, who they rarely show, also fill the band with the percussion drummer and their main lead singer (not the bigger hosehead fiddle player who drives this song) playing multiple instruments including another unique cultural instrument; the mouth harp. The Gereg is an amazing record/work of art. Trust me - continue to journey with this band...
From what I understand this is an ancient Mongolian war chant, the instruments they play are traditional Mongolian, and the vocals are all the real deal(mongolian throat singing). Glad you guys enjoyed this amazing band!
I am a 56 year old female from Chicago and I just discovered this Mongolian throat singing metal band about 5 days ago while browsing on FB....and I absolutely love them!!!
As many have pointed out this is an OLD Mongolian War Chant from the time of the Great Khan. They just put music to it. More of these guys I suggest Chinggis Khan and Yuve Yuve Yu. If you want to watch them with subtitles so you can get the lyrics you can but you don't have to. Both are amazing pieces of music.

And fully comparable to the Horst Wessel Lied. In these days we should we be mindful who we idolize, and the Great Khan's armies killed more people than Hitler and Stalin combined.
@ Not really. During Stalin's total reign he killed between 30 and 40 million people. Hitler killed, just in his own lands now, about 11 million (5 million or so holocaust victims and 6 million or so of JUST German troops). That puts you at 41 or 51 million. Khan is estimated to have killed about 40 million people or so with his conquering. None of them hold a candle to Mao though. Also I don't know where you got that I idolize him. Still the numbers will always be hard to quantify and in any case yeah Mao takes the absolute cake in terms of numbers.
@@CorvusCorone68 um no while Persian and Mongolian does have similar roots the language of even old Mongolia doesn't come from Russia but rather influenced by the same root. One has to remember that while that scholars today mostly believe that the altaic languages homeland should be somewhere in the central Asian steppe. But a lot of this is conjecture and it could be that the north influenced the steppe.
@@Hollywood6IX Lol paraphrased! But yes! OMG Thank you so much! Your video was in my recommended list and I had to listen to the song before watching your reaction, and the Saaame way you guys were grinning and bobbing your heads, was what I was doing! I've been binge watching their videos for the past 2 hours now! NO regrets! I'm in love with this group!
saw them live back when they came to lawerence kansas back in october 2019 and loved every moment, the crowd packed the theater they were playing at and even though no one knew what exactly they were saying, everyone knew they loved the energy people were giving them, the enjoyment of their songs and music, their vibe, everything, so much so that they were practically shaking the entire theater when they left, they came back for an encore and played one of their best well known songs "Yuve Yuve Yu" people went wild, love them and have a lot of their stuff they were selling then, i dot buy much from concerts but did buy a lot then
@@christopherhanton6611 it's funny to think about how some animals' names sound in other languages. Like, how hippopotamus in greek means "River horse" or bat (murciélago) in spanish is roughly translated from its roots to "flying rat with wings at the tip of its fingers"
You should check out their song “Yuve Yuve Yu” The name is pronounced “who” for us Americans. Their singing is called throat singing and is not synthesized in any way.
Mongolian throat singing, also known as overtone singing. The real deal, no auto tune. Takes years of training to do it right, and if you don’t, you can blow out your voice.
@@tekiiy Overtone Singing is the catch-all term for producing multiple notes at once. Several different styles exist even within each category, for example according to Wikipedia the Mongolian tradition has seven or eight different styles depending on where in the body the harmonic overtones are being created.
The lead singer uses kargyraa. This is the same technique used by Blind Willie Johnson and the old Popeye the Sailor cartoons. Overtone is the sygyt style, where the mouth is used as a resonant cavity to produce harmonics.
You could have added subtitles to understand what they were singing. But you basically guessed it: It's a warsong. Basically they sing that they don't care how the enemy will come at them, they will be kicking their ass.
It is pronounced "who" and you are right, it is a battle chant, its all about bring everything you got and not only will we meet you in battle, we will win. The instruments were traditional Mongolian instruments and the singing is real, its Traditional Mongolian Throat Singing. The reason you kept feeling a Native American vibe is the fact that the two cultures are cousins. Same ancestors, ancient historically speaking, you should check out the lyrics, its so similar to Northern Tribes here in The Americas. I'm from a North-Eastern tribe, where many of us still have that Mongolian look to this day. My ex looks like the singer's brother. LOL I was even born with a birth mark (that disappears after infancy) called "The Mongolian Spot".... LOL
The Hu always blows me away. One of favorite of their songs that they did more recently is Song of women ft. Lzzy Hale. You should check it out. Her voice blends surprisingly well with the throat singing.
Fun fact : The Hu opened for Babymetal on Babymetal's US tour. There's a picture of them together if you Google it. It makes me happy seeing these badass mongolian dudes hanging out with Babymetal on tour. Globalization has its downsides, but different cultures coming together through music like this is definitely not one of them!
The pics of the girls and Slipknot are pretty cool too. Quite the juxtaposition. I'd like to see them with GWAR (in a pic...I don't think I could handle a show!)...both the bands enjoy performing for kids. I know GWAR has a child friendly show (props to them for figuring out how to pull that off).
I first heard this band the other day and found myself completely addicted and bought their album "The Gereg" and what a great decision. The whole album is great. Just proves that language is no boundary for great music.
Yes that is his voice - to learn more google Mongolian Throat Singing to learn what they do. They are not the old Who but the new Hu (both sound the same)
You two really seemed to enjoy this one, so here are a few more. This other version of what you just watched is harder, & Jacoby kills it with the call & response. check this out....the lead singer of papa roach joined them on this song....there is some English signing on it....."The HU - Wolf Totem feat. Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach (Official Music Video)"
Tuvan throat singing is one of my favorite styles. Absolutely beautiful and engages your voice to do things you never thought you could. Ladies, if you’re having a hard time with gutterals, vocal fry, dual tones and certain notes, please try to train yourself in throat singing, it’ll engage you to get out of head voice. It’ll take time but it’s so rewarding once you are able to do it.
And they are one of the absolute best bands I’ve ever seen live and from the front row last November. We were supposed to see them again in May but Covid stopped that as they were stuck in Australia for months. Absolutely amazing and they sound even better live.
This is definitely based on an old Mongolian war chant. You missed out on the awesome lyrics by not have the subtitles on. Basically, the say, if you come looking for trouble, they will start by striking you like thunder, and conclude by handing you the wrath of heaven. That is some serious trash talk.
I love The HU, I'm so glad you guys reacted to them! You should Definetly react to the song Sugaan Essena, another song by The HU, which translates to The Black Thunder. It was made for a Star Wars video game, and it was reverse engineered from Mongolian into an entirely alien language.
I luv the traditional old school Mongolian musical instruments...and the beautiful traditional Mongolian throat singing ...it just adds to the edginess of the song...❤️❤️❤️❤️
The band's name The HU, is the Mongolian root word for human being. They call their style “Hunnu Rock”… inspired by the Hunnu, an ancient Mongolian empire, known as The Huns in western culture. Some of the band's lyrics include old Mongolian war cries and poetry.
This is the HU they are the coolest awesomest band on the planet check out all of their songs and videos they are all awesome and they keep getting better with time. Mongolian throat singing at its finest. If you ever have a chance to see them live take it. They are a Motorcycle Club not a gang that is called a Morin Khurr and in some somgs he makes it neigh like a horse and the guitar like instrument is called a tovshuur if you turn on the captions you get the lyrics in English on some songs.
Saw them live a couple of months ago in a small venue. I can tell you they sound even better live. No effects, no nothing, just amazing human voices. Nobody understood anything of the lyrics, but damn, the atmosphere was amazing.
Farrar not always built beautifully, it was a homemade instrument, quite often very very basic, The HU have made changes to their Horse Head Fiddles for musical differences and of course for the look
It’s called “Morin Khuur” in Mongolian (Horse head Fiddle in rough translation). It’s supposed to mimic the sound of horses. If you listen to Morin Khuur solo, it sounds like singing horse. It’s quite beautiful imo
Nice reaction, guys. Now try the Hu's "Sugaan Essena"; a version of their "Black Thunder"...reprised for a Star Wars game. You'll get to see the whole band.
Turn on cc, it is subtitled in eng. They ARE saying hu (who), it is short for huunan meaning human. They have 5 more official videos, 3 of which are collaborations. Throat singing/overtone. No electronics. Instrument is morin khuur (horsehead fiddle), 2 strings made of horsehair, as is the bow.
It's called "Throat Singing", and Wolf Totem means that they are part of the Wolf Clan... it's not necessarily a war cry, but a really strong statement of who they are.
