There is something so haunting, beautiful, distant, and lonely about this song even in it's tone alone. Never mind the lyrics, I can't put it into words even as a songwriter, oh wait, I just did. Epic.

I always come to think of all those serial killers that were hunting around California at the same time as this song was popular. The hippie era had a very dark backside.

The members of this group all came out of the folk music scene of the early 60's which is why they all could sing together so well. Plus John Phillips was one of the great song-writers of pop music. Note how the acoustic guitar at the intro mimics a leaf falling to the ground then you hear 'All the leaves are brown...' Sadly personal conflicts and drugs caused their break-up after a few years. Mama Cass, what a voice!

The song was written while the band were in New York, longing for home. Amazing harmonies. You should have a listen to "I saw her again (last night)". Mama Cass died way too young. Also, if you like the Mamas and the Papas, have a listen to Australian band The Seekers - a song like "Georgy Girl" is well worth a listen. (And the Rolling Stones are still going!)

Beautiful song. Another folk band from the era is Peter, Paul and Mary that had many songs but there most know well known is probably Puff the Magic Dragon. I want to suggest you react to 14 yr old Taj Farrant. He had 2 songs debut #1 on the iTunes blues charts Crossroads and Cruz. He's videos are good but watching him play live at one any of the shows he's been playing at his current tour in the US are great. He's going to be a future superstar.

John Phillips (with guitar) and Michelle (blonde) were together. They did have a couple kids ... one being MacKenzie Phillips, who played the older sister on the show "One day at a time". The others are just friends in the band. There are sad stories with these young people... but I won't go into all of that now. Great song, all of theirs are. Have you heard of the group Wilson Phillips? Two sisters (Carrie and Wendy Wilson)were the children of the beach boys Brian Wilson. Chynna Phillips was the daughter of John and Michelle Phillips of The Mamas and the Pappas.

The M's and The P's have at least one more big song, "Monday, Monday". Michelle Phillips was the mother of China Phillips, who was in the MEH group Wilson Phillips, with the daughters of Brian Wilson from The Beach Boys.

They did mama Cass wrong. She was in love with the tall guy since she met him. the blonde loved the short singer. Mama Cass told the blonde she liked the tall guy and the blonde instantly started dating him. The short singer loved the blonde and also dated her. Which left mama Cass out by herself. She like most big folks was lonely. Thats one of the main reasons they broke up is they hurt her heart and it bothered her deeply. She died alone in her bed by herself some years later. It was sad that one of the greatest folk rock singers was loved by so many for her singing but had nobody to love.

It’s not exactly true. Michelle and Cass were close friends and raised their children together long after Michelle split from John. Michelle’s daughter has a RU-vid channel called California Preaching and has Cass’ daughter on as a guest, they’re close friends!

@@joy88867 Sadly you are wrong. Mama Cass was in love with Denny but Michelle had an affair with Denny (while still married to John). Mama Cass was so hurt and the affair broke up John and Michelle which eventually led the break up of the group. Mama Cass died in 1974 so Michelle and Cass could NOT have raised their children together.

The man you said was a Peter is actually Denny Doherty who was from Canada but the rest were from America. Cass died at an early age of 32 from a heart attack with autopsy showing no drugs in her system and 4 years later, Keith Moon died in the same room she died in at the same age of 32

Metallica formed in 1983 in Downey / Norwalk CA. Both cities next door to my city. The Rolling Stones formed in the early 60's and are still touring today. They are releasing a new album this month Hackney Diamonds.

I've been listening to this song for over 50 years and never get tired of it, Yes, it's a song that can be on constant replay. It's about not only missing the California weather, but it's about missing the California lifestyle and living the California dream back in the '60s.

The 60’s was an absolute blast guys,shame you didn’t get any of it. I was 10 in ‘64 so I greedily soaked up ALL of it and on into the magnificent 70’s and the crazy 80’s. My hippy mum had Mary jane all over the house,parties every weekend and fantastic,awesome music. WHAT a vibe. Damn,I miss those wonderful,carefree days.

do y'all know the rolling stones have a new studio album set to be released this week? they released albums regularly until 1989, then they started taking longer between albums, but never stopped. they released an album in '94, '97, '05, '16, and now '23. and for the record, they formed in 1962 and released their first album in, i want to say, 1964.

THE MAMAS & THE PAPAS were JOHN PHILLIPS (guitar & chief songwriter ), DENNY DOHERTY, MICHELLE PHILLIPS(skinny blonde) & CASS ELLIOT(plump red head). they were originally formed in NEW YORK in Greenwich Village. in 1964-65, they did decide to relocate to L.A. because that was the new hub of the new music scene. JOHN was married to MICHELLE, she had an affair with DENNY, while CASS was in love with DENNY. it all became a big cluster fvkk & they disbanded in 1968.

Y'all should check out Carl Sagan, the Golden Record, and the Voyager spacecraft. Chuck Berry made it. Mamas & Poppas didn't. But "California Dreamin'" is virtually a state anthem today all these decades later. PS. Michelle Phillips did make it into space as a guest star on an episode of Star Trek TNG.

The Lead singer Denny Doherty from Nova Scotia Canada, the Mamas and Papas mostly used a famous session band The Wrecking Crew when putting music to vinyl. The mamas and papas were prominent in instigating The Monterey Pop festival in 1967 which featured Janis Joplin coming out party Singing her now famous Ball and Chain with mama Cass sitting in the audience watching Janis perform in amazement. ✌🏻

1:15 Paul Di'Anno is the original singer for Maiden. He left after their second album Killers. 2:30 Technically it's B as he did not leave of his own accord. James and Lars came to him in April '83 concerned about his drug abuse and violent behavior and told him "We have to let you go." ❤ this song it's been in a lot of movies. In the live Janis Joplin I think it was when she sang the song Ball and Chain Mamma Cass real name Cass Elliott RIP was the woman that they kept showing with her sunglasses on and her mouth hanging open in disbelief. Mamma Cass could sing ,but the band member I think is name is John the tall guy didn't want her in the band due to her weight, and he used to make comments all the time about it even when she tried so hard to lose weight.

I havent done any "illegal" stuff for almost 30 years, and i still go there when i hear Pink Floyd: Smoke is right, the muscle memory is strong than dr*gs, hats off to the power of music....with u there H6...but maybe work on the Brit accent😅😂
