Pascal came out on FIRE in the finals, going 14/17 with 32 points to lead the Raptors to a win in their first ever NBA finals game. The Raptors won this one with team defense, getting contributions from Gasol handling PnR action and protecting the rim, Fred VanVleet chasing Curry relentlessly, Siakam flying all over the floor, and Kawhi roaming the lanes and helping out.

GASOL did a tremendous job by reading plays and pressuring shooters even at 3ft away from the arc 🔥

How Lowry hasn't made an all-defensive team is beyond me. Either way this teams defense is a masterpiece, and should be talked about more. Great video as always.

Yeah Lowry has had a great career defensively, especially when you consider his size. Thanks a lot!

A lot of media people just don't acknowledge Lowry as a threat defensively. Players know that he's dangerous though. Dudes are scared of his paint protection.

This was probably the best game of Siakam's career to this point, especially when you take its importance into consideration! You can see how effective FVV is on Curry at times, and that set the stage for the rest of the series. Fred's ability to get around screens is huge on a guy like Curry, and his on-ball defense makes him formidable when Curry does eventually get the ball into his hands. But really, the defense the Raptors played was a total team effort, with multiple guys stepping up to try and keep Curry and Klay from getting open, and then the rest of the defense helping and rotating to fill in the gaps. Gasol was particularly incredible in that aspect.

Marc's pick and roll defense is why Masai makes that trade 10/10. One of the first things I noticed when he first came to Toronto was how elite his gapping and recovering on pick and rolls are almost a breath of fresh air compared to JV. One underrated part of the finals was how GSW couldn't play either Marc or Serge off the floor which has been something they normally do to other teams
@TooMuchHoops

Totally agree. Gasol was/is so huge in the Raptors' defense.

@@TooMuchHoops This is why I'm worried if Gasol leaves because I really don't know who can replace him since Marc is such a rarity in the NBA. And having Marc and Serge as our center rotation has always been overlooked when people talk about our success

I wonder if Fred ever gets an All-Defense nod. It looks like Lowry won't get one despite being one of the top guards on that end of the floor but part of the reason why Fred got his FMVP vote was because of how well he guarded Steph. Fred's elite defensively, probably the best little defender since Chris Paul.
@TooMuchHoops

I think Fred's close this year, and I hope he gets it. In future years, even if he improves, it's hard to have a higher profile than stepping into a starting role as the reigning champs.

@@TooMuchHoops I look at forums online and only see Fred and OG on raptors sites. Kinda worried that they won't get their awards. The chances of the Raptors having 0 All D players is low but I think voters will give it to Pascal over anyone else.

I think the warriors were ready and had a gameplan on how to deal with all the raptors players, but i think they overlooked vanvleet, they didnt think he would be such a physical and annoying defender, they also thought because of his size he wouldnt be able to keep up with them, but he never backed down

As suffocating as the Raptors Def was, I gotta give props to Steph and Klay. FVV was Steph's shadow for practically the entire finals and he still manages to put up numbers. I swear every time Steph took a 3 I had a mini heart attack.

Yeah those guys are so deadly. It's really impressive to see Curry working off-ball. As tough and relentless as FVV is on D, Curry is just as tough and relentless on O. And Klay is pure fire. Every time he shoots it feels like it's going in.

I see a lot of people saying a healthy warriors team would sweep the raps or beat them in 5, but this vid shows why we would have an actual chance. Unlike most if not all teams that faced the warriors, the raps defense can manage the warriors stars to a much higher degree. Assuming everyone on the raptors is healthy (considering we’re setting the parameters that the warriors are completely), the raptors would have siakam, kawhi and og (three 6’7-6’10 wings with 7’2-7’3 wingspans who have the whole package defensively) ready to defend 6’11 kd and contest his jump shots. Not to mention the plethora of high iq, high quality guards defending curry and Thompson with the paint presence the raps have and the warriors lack. Also dint forget what nick nurse would do in terms of adjustments. A healthy raps vs healthy warriors would go no less than 7 and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the raptors come on top
@bri12345ification

You know people don't understand that the championship is not just the finals it's the culmination of every series played so when they call us a fluke I say what about going all the way down to the last game and last shot against Philly or what about that comeback against a favourites Bucks team down 2-0 like those wins don't mean anything in the bigger picture? And it's quite common that the finals opponent is weaker than a team you played in your own conference. Take 2002 for example no one can tell me that New Jersey was a better challenge for the Lakers than Sacarmento was. But in the end what makes those people corny af was the fact that they had GSW sweeping or winning in 5 even with KD out so they basically shot themselves in the foot making these excuses because they just made themselves sound even more stupid than they were

@@TooMuchHoops OG is honestly such an underrated aspect of the team. I really think it can't be overstated how key he is to our defensive identity. His ability as a big wing player to cover other 6'8 forwards, like kawhi/lebron etc... as well as his ability to cover much smaller players such as John Wall. Even play center A BIT (given that there aren't many large big hulking centers anyways), is really a marvel. The kid just needs to work on his footwork a bit and play a bit more bully ball down low and I believe his sealing is multi itme all defence and MAYBE an allstar level once in his career. He definitely has the ability to be a defensive player of the year. The beginning of the year and throughout he was getting multiple blocks and steals per game at a rate that was unheard of. Matching the likes of bruce bowen but without the karate kick.

@@hostjoe and the beauty is he doesn't really have to create his own shots. We have 2 great point guards in Lowry and Vanvleet to do that for him and not to mention our centre in Gasol is also an elite shot creator. Siakam emerged as an allstar player this year and hopefully a superstar next year and Powell dispute his injuries this year as been play out of his mind. OG is in the perfect condition for him to grow as a player. They allow him to play to his strengths (defense) while allowing him to develop his offensive capabilities

Warriors were caught unprepared. They never thought how good the raptors defense was. The best defense they faced was probably the rockets and never really faced a good defense (Cavs defense was atrocious and terrible). They never faced a defense like the raptors. Raptors had long defenders and mobile defenders. And they were unique

Yeah, but let's be real they were also injured as fuck, put KD or even just get an healthy Klay for all the series and it's not the same at all. I'm not justifying them for losing or trying to denigrate the Raptors, all I'm saying is we can't really compare what the Warriors faced with anything that came previously because circumstances were different.

1st offensive possession for the Golden State Warriors. 😀😀😀 Ball passed to Power Forward off a Zipper Cut, fake Dribble Handoff and tries to attack then kick-out pass to Andre Iguodala = the spot that would have been Kevin Durant. Iguodala doesn't shoot 3-pointers like Kevin Durant. GAME OVER.
