Oftentimes the best gifts are from those who have no obligation to give, yet as small as they may seem, are cherished beyond others. Johns mug is a perfect example.

My guy, you are preserving this beautyful tool for the next generations and decades. Imagine how many persons used and cherished this pair of scissors before you. And now, thanks to you, these scissors will be around for another 200 years, and many, many people will love and cherish them. BTW I love the accent.

I bought a cheap set of taps and dies for a job and it had a thread pitch gage in the case. I use the gage 3 times as often as the taps or dies. Sharpening scissors is a favorite gimmick sales opportunity. I occasionally find a pair that have been ground to destruction. Rippled and crooked because someone used the "sharpener" on their electric can opener. Your drawfile and stone method is the way to go. 😁😎
@ScoutCrafter
@ScoutCrafter 3 года назад
Dave the steel is so hard on scissors that draw filing is a very slow process but stops you from taking off too much metal! (Which I have done more then once!) LOL!! Thanks!

Very nice rescue of a beautiful pair of scissors. I inherited my father's Wiss shears which he used in commercial artwork. Really good quality and still very sharp. They also have black handles. My grandfather had a saw sharpening business for many years in CA. What you called the "burr" on the edge of the blade, he called the "tang." Thanks

Funny thing... I recently added another rather large US General Toolbox to house the many tools I didn't know I needed until seeing them on your channel. I think I learn something every video. Geez, you know how many scissors I've destroyed in my youth? Now I sharpen them and have to watch my fingers, even the pre-school little guys are sharp as heck. I used to sharpen hair cutting scissors for the inmates and they would ask who sharpened them and I'd tell them I did so they can cut hair better. Oddly enough, never had a brawl during hair cut day. They rather enjoyed it. Those scissors turned out better than new. They cut marvelous, great tips to sharpen them. Don't lose a finger!

The guy on Hand Tool Rescue has a recipe for japanning. I've watched him do it a couple of times. Ingredients are extremely inexpensive, too. I like a pair of straight shears like that. Among other things, my son got me a pair of Klein electrician's scissors for Christmas. Love them!
@ScoutCrafter

Most japaning was done with after the 40's and enamel paint was the preferred product used. Now powder coating is big but the 400 degrees needed to set the paint can mess with the temper of the blades!

When I hear those siccors snip it reminds me I really need to find a good pair of siccors for the shop. But again, when I'm looking for a pair cheapskate me quickly steps in 😂 The shops you have a in the US are so incredibly well stocked. The supplies a Walmart holds for car parts or paint, it's amazing too me. We are lucky to find any two part epoxy at all. If I was to want something slow setting I probably can order it, but I would need to pay around 9 dollars in shipping, wich makes things expensive quickly. Anyways great start if the week!! We've had such a beautiful day here weather wise :) Thanks you, I look forward to Wednesday's!!

You could always keep the mug and use it as a pen holder, or “bit pot” where you put little small things you don’t want to lose. I have pen pots in nearly every room in the house, from mugs the kids have given me over the years. Interesting watching you cutting paper and then talk about cutting fabric. A seamstress would never cut paper with fabric shears. It’s considered a crime heh heh.

When you cleaned the surfaces to be glued on the mug you used denatured alcohol but when you cleaned off the excess you used rubbing alcohol. Why do you use the different types ?
@ScoutCrafter
@ScoutCrafter 3 года назад
Denatured alcohol has no water so it’s great for prepping the surface. Isopropyl alcohol has water but is a great economical cleaner for overflow areas. Denatured could be used but it’s become quite costly as of late. 😃👍

Great video John. I just bought a lot of 3 vintage industrial scissors. Two came apart fine. The last one they peened the screw after they put on the nut. I had a hell of a time getting the nut off. Now I’m trying to figure out if I can find a replacement screw and nut, or maybe get a tap and die to chase the threads. It looks to be a 1/4-28 so I’ll need to buy a tap and die as I don’t have that size. Do you have any special suppliers for replacement scissor screws?? I may be able to salvage the original but not sure. The peen was very deep.

@@ScoutCrafter Yup, unfortunately my lathe is a 1939 Craftsman Atlas which is in pieces on my work awaiting refurbishing. I’m planning on a full takedown, cleanup, repainting worthy of the “John Quality Approach”. Actually both of us have very similar views on that. So first the tap and die approach. If it works I’m golden. If not then that pair may need to wait for the lathe. Best Regards, John
