The Chevrolet Suburban is not only one of the most storied brand names in automotive history, it is also the longest running nameplate as it was originally launched in 1935. Chevrolet launched the seventh-generation Suburban for the 1973 model year. Originally internally named the “Rounded Line” of light duty trucks, ironically most enthusiasts now call them “Square Bodies.” For the seventh generation, both the Chevrolet and GMC divisions adopted the Suburban nameplate. Growing nominally in size over its Action-Line predecessor, the seventh-generation Suburban completely abandoned its three-door CarryAll past, introducing a station wagon-style body with four full passenger doors (more than a decade after its Wagoneer and Travelall rivals). As the term “sport-utility vehicle” was more closely associated with off-road vehicles (such as the K5 Blazer), GM designated the Suburban as a truck-based station wagon.
From the rear of the passenger doors, the Suburban shared its bodywork (both its doors and roofline) with the C/K crew-cab pickup (a new configuration introduced for 1973). The 1⁄2-ton and 3⁄4-ton 10 and 20 payload series made their return alongside the rear-wheel-drive C-series and 4×4 K-series. Alongside the long-running twin-panel “barn door” rear doors, the Suburban adopted an optional tailgate-style rear door with a retractable rear window (lowered manually or electrically).
The current caretaker has owned this 1985 Chevrolet K10 Suburban for the last six years. Not only does this Chevrolet Suburban for sale feature the desirable and rare rear barn doors, but this example benefits from an Imperial custom conversion interior. This custom interior features a wood console and wood trim throughout, four captain chairs (with the rear ones fully reversible), fold-down/removable third row seat, four-wheel-drive, V8 Short block (350), lots of interior lighting (mood lighting in the rear uppers), AC upgraded to R134, new copper heater core, Bilstein shocks and seven leaf springs added three years ago. This Suburban for sale also features new M/S tires, original rims, original engine, original automatic transmission, matching curtains on the rear, tinted windows, power windows and door locks, headliner intact, rear side liner has some rips, carpet in excellent condition, one small rust scab on left rear fender, no dents but some minor paint scratches.
