My father was a missionary in Rotuma in the 30's . His name was Rev Dr C M Churchward. He was a brilliant South Pacific linguist and he wrote the Grammar and dictionary of the Rotuman language , translated folk tales into a book. Tales of a Lonely Island, translated the Hymn Book into Rotuman. When he was in his seventies he went to Suva to translate the Bible into Rotuman for the Rotuman congregation. He died there in 1968 and the Rotumans honoured him by calling their new church "Churchward Chapel"
Got emotional when I heard the Rotuman singing, bought myself a dictionary to teach myself while studying here in NZ. Noa'ia e mauri to all New Zealand rotumans out there!
I'm half Maori and I love hearing about different cultures and langues. This sounds abit like if Maori and a native American language where mixed. Anyways this language sounds so beautiful xx
Noa'ia, what an excellent story! It is so true of how much little we know of our island, its history and language when we move abroad to the likes of Australia and New Zealand. I am happy to know that there are families trying to keep the culture alive away from Rotuma and Fiji. We have a small community of Rotumans here in Dubai but the family is growing. Foak'sia, Geoffrey Tolo
Faiek'sia ma noa'ia (greetings in Rotuma). Otou 'asa se Sophia (My name is Sohpia). Ma gou hän Pepjei,Faguta,Rotuma. (I'm a woman from Pepjei, Faguta, Rotuma) ☺
i like languages and their history i would like to learn at least a bit of each of the languages of pacific.there must be many languages there.muy greetings to pacific islands
Rotuman language is completely different from other Pacific languages. It's more like Malay language which quite beautiful. It's a shame that I dont speak my great grandfather's language.
Rotuman Language needs to be documented and put into teach format. Especially for them little ones born abroad. Must preserve the languages. Links to past. Who we are and where we all going. Arohanui.
My grandads Rotuman, last name Wesley and my great grandfather couldnt speak samoan but married a Samoan beauty (grandma). his name was Ramukau? or Liamukau how we say it in samoan. Im in NZ and would love to learn the language and find the Rotuman community.
Love is our truth and truth will set us free with love for all things I love you brothers and sisters listen to your heart our said we will find him there, how true he really was, he said don’t look for me where I was he said for he was in us all our reo
Hmmm quite different from other Pacific Island languages. I would love to learn this Beautiful language . My great grandfather is half Rotuman/Irish anyway...
Actually, two of the rarest languages in the world, are spoken in Vanuatu. So Vanuatu and the island of New Guinea -- divided between Papua New Guinea and the Indonesian state of West Papua, is the hotspot for the loss of linguistic diversity in the Pacific.
Brothers sisters of triangle we must bring ourselves together again as one nation good times peace in him forever I’m proud to be tangata of the triangle
it's because they are most related to the polenesian people than the melonesian people, they migrated from the east pacific islands of polynesia (said this video)
Thats because many have come to NZ and intermarried. And they are POLYNESIAN, not Micronesian. They are not the same as Fijians so they are fairer skinned anyway.
@@tanacz5505 wrong that's why we r known as the cross bridge of the pacific. Most of us r mix blood because of how our ancestor interacts with other islanders in the pacific. Indian people just come in now.
@@neumisavua5879 I think you mean crossroads but yeah I get your point
