Rare one owner classic British car barn find discovery

Sorry for the clickbait. It isn't a barn find, it's just a shonky garage. But it is mighty rare and was a highly enjoyable experience to unearth this car from its tomb after 4 decades. My friend Tim at Roadhouse Motor Co roadhousemotor.co.uk/ shares my guilty pleasure appreciation for Austin Allegros and was looking all over the UK for the rarest model of Britain's most hated car. It turns out there was one less than 100 metres from his house, buried in an overgrown garage. Time for some urban ex and some towing.
The Allegro club international www.allegroclubint.org.uk/ say there could be as many as 7 Allegro 1750 SS models left worldwide, with 3 actually functioning on the road. We found a totally untouched one owner 1750 SS and Tim hopes to get it back on the road.
If you don't live in the UK then consider this as a British version of what the American AMC Pacer. A classic car with irony that now houses some '70s nostalgia. The Austin Allegro launched May 1973 as replacement for the Austin 1100 and 1300 - the NEW DRIVING FORCE FROM AUSTIN. It lasted until 1982 and the early series 1 cars are considered the rarest and most desirable.
Thank you for watching. Please do subscribe and contact me through the carpervert.com website if you have something that could be interesting to feature on #carpervert
Filmed by Jonny Smith and Tim Glover.

In 1979 my Dad talked about buying the allegro. I said dad dont do it. He did, we were the laughing stock. I packed a bag and left home, i was 13. Ive never seen my family since.

you leave your house and family just because of a car, it’s kind of overkill. And after all why this car is so bad, I've seen several reviews of this car, and for me it's just a bad economy car, but nothing to be ashamed of, at least you have a car.

@@averagecarguy420 Clearly you don't know what sarcasm is, sarcasm must be directed at someone else and usually means the opposite of what was said, that is, if he had written "in 1979 my father bought an Allegro, I loved that car" inside of the right context would be sarcasm, but as a text with no previous or posthumous context it will be misinterpreted as a fact. And by the way i am 90% sure that this story is false, i just used it as an excuse to question why this car is so hated, since i am neither british nor european.

I don't like them either, but I also don't think they were THAT bad as to get crowned the worst car England ever produced. They look sort-of ugly, and the quatro steering wheel was a horrible idea, but other then that.... I have driven one, and I did not think they were that bad a drive, really. But then, I am a British car fanatic, so there are not really any that I DON'T like, at least a little bit! ;)

I’d seen this before but still watched it again! Every old car deserves to be saved if possible in my book. 👍

It certainly looks fairly solid, definitely worth saving. Myself, I drive a 1972 Avenger, it's also a fairly unloved model but I think they look great and the handling is spot on.

Great video, I bought one in 1980 when my 1275 Clubman got written off. Loved the car for its comfort but p/xed it for a new Metro when they were launched. Interest rates on mortgages at 15%. Happy days!

The very first car I owned when I was 18, before I passed my driving test, was an Alegro with a quartic steering wheel and I LOVED it. I paid £100 for it in 1984. The temperature gauge didn't work, the idler gear was chewing through the gearbox casing and the back seat springs had broken. I had it about 6 months and then the cooling system had a leak but I didn't realise because the temperature gauge was broken so the engine overheated and blew the head gasket

I learnt to drive in an Allegro, I recall the instructor telling me to watch the bonnet lift as the clutch bit.

Brilliant, I had UBL686M an Allegro 1750 Sport for a few years back in the 70's. It did go very well with the 1750cc engine and 5 speed box, but ate rear suspension mounts for a past time. Went on to get a Maxi afterwards, great car, loved the ability to get a flat loading bay with all the rear seats down. Happy days!!

@@andrewnorris5415 I don't live in the epicentre of the outbreak here. Where I am people are being sensible and not going out unecessarily and mostly wearing masks when they do. I also think that under the circumstances, the authorities here are doing a good job of containing the virus, as well as keeping people informed.

The winter of 1984 I used my Dad's mustard yellow vandal plas estate with added yellow velour interior to get to work in when it snowed, I made it in no one else did, ever since then I've had a soft spot for the Alegro. It's just proper old school car, PS if you ever want to use the choke you'll need a clothes peg to hold it out :0)

Loved watching this guys. Thanks for making and sharing. Once again Austin/Morris/Leyland missed the boat with this car by not making it a hatchback, same as they did with the 1100/1300. Shame because the suspension was a thing of wonder and beauty.
