15:30 - that whistle run is not something she did in the studio version, and Mariah was only lipping to studio tracks at this point. Another giveaway is that she looks relaxed and focused, while when she’s lipping she like tenses her face/ mime in unnatural ways. The way the ending note falls off at the end is not something Mariah would leave in a lip track either.
poor girl was really struggling for this tour but the first 3 whistles were actually live, we have footage of pretty much every date of tour and they all sound different, sometimes she cracks or goes flat. the final whistle run was lipped tho and has been ever since with a few exceptions over the years, like you said, there's too much at stake and people are kinda waiting for her to f up
I would venture to say she was capable of doing the final whistles live- because she could do that D7 whistle run occasionally. 1997 was the first time she encountered major vocal problems, so she became more unsure of whether she could do it.

The 2nd whistle isn't lip sync but the final whistles were u can hear from the sound and tone diference. her voice was so tired during butterfly/rainbow era cause she was working a lot mixing with nodules, divorce, media all of it affect right? Her voice got really raspy in the Music Box tour too. What nobody seems to point out is that her Daydream tour had her only singing 1 concert per WEEK. It gave her time to sing live, have several days off, do her 24 hour vocal rest, and warm up before the show. In music box she was singing every 2-3 days for 2 weeks. Mariah isn't a regular singer, all of her songs are vocal suicide, so why are we surprised by the sound of her vocals on tour?

It is a raw footage, not edited, and was not supposed to be out, it was the Sony vault, there is no dubbed thing, but in The Butterfly Tour some parts were lipsynch like the climax on "Whenever You Call", "Breakdown" was the studio version, "Baby Doll" is the studio version, that tout was stopped earlier because of her vocal issues not for a movie that never sees the light of the day

1998 was not a great year for the health of her voice. It got considerably raspier and inconsistent but still had great moments that year. This performance she was sick and did the rest of the tour sick. Mariah’s journey is one that should be studied more. Also that whistle was not lipped she went up to the d7/eb7 on several dates instead of the f6 she did lipped the last ending ones and how she fell out of too. If she lipped she would just lipped with lower studio track. Another fact she says when vocals chords are inflamed and chest is raspier the whistles are easier to hit for her. the whistles are not lipsync because if they were they would sound the same on every live performance from that era and they don't, also her body acts diferent when lipsyncing and you can tell this are live because they sound a little bit off compare to the performances she lipsynced on this whistles
Mariah was more overworking in this period and having very little sleep. When her cords are swollen from that her chest voice is severely impacted but her whistles actually become more fluid and easy that’s why you might think she lipped those here. All the whistles in this performance are definitely live ( sustained longer, going higher, new runs and changes not in the studio version, audible breath offsets )
20:50 - everybody in the comments has been saying this is lipsynced- I wanted to point out that her body language changes, she lifts her shoulders and smiles a bit, and you can tell she’s uncomfortable with the miming skills.
Thank you for the video, you explain technical stuff really well. I just want to note that she’s dodging some of the notes to preserve her voice, because her songs are very taxing vocally, so she has to make some modifications so she can last a whole concert. She did it even on her best days. Lastly the first 3 whistles were live. The outro ones were playback, but even there she was whistling along to the playback some of the time. Her whistles were just really strong that date. Edit: I just got to the part where you said people are gonna get mad so just clarifying I’m not mad 😂 just pointing it out.
In this performance, the only lipsynced part was the last whistles. Butterfly Tour had 11 dates, and in all of her Emotions performances, the first, second, and third whistles always sounded different, but the last whistles were taken from the studio version. Her whistles cracked 2-3 times in the second and third whistles during this tour. Also, when it comes to Mariah, if her belts sound hoarse and cracked, then her whistles will sound crystal clear, and vice versa.
I truly think that whistle was live. Which is amazing.

I love your videos! By the way, the only lipsyched whistles in Emotions in that era were the ones at the end. After 98, she lipped all fuc*ing whistles of Emotions (maybe 1 or 2 exceptions)

great analysis as always and no mad at all, but Im super duper trained about her lip sync... girl she is not lip synced here not even half note..not even sing above or with a back vocal track..if you slow the video by alot you can tell,also by her double scritchy sound that her whistles produce sometimes. also If you know Mariah really well you can tell by her menarisms alone if she lipsyncs. also its not even dubbed by any means/filtered or remastered... back at that time she very rarely lipped and if she did it was mostly because of some sort of dancing like with fantasy or some very whispery songs like babydoll. also when she did lipped at that era she used to lip on bigger phrases like the first part (the whispery) of "my all". or (even more rarely) a prerecord (new vocals or studio lower pitch) of the whole song...(my all,butterfly etc). song like emotions,vision of love,make it happen never did lip them till late '10's. emotion started to lip only the whistles around the era of Obssesed. when she had some issues with whistle's live and she had some super strong belting ( I think at that time she did some procedure at her vocal cords,cause also her tone somehow changed and she said once that she thought about it,but wanted to avoid it cause it might mess/destroy her whistles... since then her whistles never been the same,studio or live and rarely do live whistles anymore...and another hint she might had planned that surgery is that prior of that new era without the whistles her voice chest was really a big mess she hardly could speak and she was making some loud and amazing whistles all over her songs like she knew she might lose them soon.....hint2.. i knew a person that knew some people from her very inner circle that told him that she has a big chronic issue with her hormones,she has already had at least 2 vocal surgeries for her nodules and also she had 2 miscarriages ... hormonal issues change alot some tonal/vocal textures of your voice also the removal of nodules or any touching at vocal cords changes a bit the voice... mariah had some eras that her voice its about the same but also like its from another person at the same time ,i don't know how to explain it better... like mariah of 1990-93... mariah 94-96... Butterfly/rainboraiah mariah super tonal change also tired and damaged sound. glitter Mariah completely different tonal colors textures..her approaches to notes..the habbit of starting to shout the notes....then charmbracelet mariah another change of the tone not by much the start of the intentional girly cracks at the end of her phrases....and starting to use a yelly mixing voice that usually she does only at the studio, the noticable lack of vibrato.... emancipation of mimi change of tone yet again not by too much...more rasp more girly intentional cracks at the end of almost every big belting that belting is that weird newish yelly mix thing that rarely to never she does live....At Angels cry she loses her Live whistles...its almost everything if not all lipped. and almost like high pitch headnotes/faltsetos rather her signature whistles that was airy and with vibrato and amazing. that with whistle holds even now but she had done some efforts for some live little parts..... after that era she is pretty much about the same but year after year her voice decline by a bit and make her even more insecure to sing live.. nowdays lip about everything...last night vegas was like 98% prerecorded (at least with some new vocals)...

In this performance her whistles are not all lip synced. The first 3 are real and the last ultimate whistles were lip synced. Also a lot of the times when her voice is raspy her whistles are stronger and when her chest is clearer it’s harder for her (most of the time) to do whistles.
I'm a big fan and well versed in all of her lipping tracks. I am pretty dang sure all whistles except for the ones at the very end are live. I dont think she ever lipped those specific whistles by this point. Her lip sync tracks are consistent except for televised performances (like an award or late night show, you will see a lot more variance here). She doesn't randomly bust out with a lip sync track and do it live other nights. It's routinely lipped or routinely live until it isn't anymore. It was maybe a few more shows into this tour or the next tour, when all emotions whistles were lipped. It's hard to tell with the butterfly tour because there is such little audience footage and the majority of the content is dubbed. These whistles here are as real and unmanufactured as she gets. Her voice was in bad shape this night. Even the whistles sound dry and small, yet somehow very accessible and comforrably free? She definitely lipped the last ones - hence, why they have a completely different texture. And also a good demonstration of how Mariah has a routine lip syncing track. Even though she probably could have done them, she was forced to lip them because it's already on the track - she will rarely cut the lipped vocals. Her voice is too unpredictable to make those decisions night by night or even song by song. Usually there will be a night or two where she simply can't do it consistent enough anymore, and most likely starts lipping it for the rest of the tour or the next one (or until she feels better about doing it again). I think that happened on rainbow after Milan. I mean I could be wrong but who really knows. I think a lot of people are citing the whole "bad chest, good whistle" rule, but even that doesn't usually hold up. There are times when both work and neither work. That has never controlled her lip syncing tracks. Her lip sync tracks have always been dictated by the decline of her voice gradually forcing her to consistently lip more and more. This tour was new territory because she had never really lipped on a tour probably ever. But definitely not systematically like this.
23:13 - I haven’t heard that interview, but I think the only times she’s actually warmed up was in the very first years, especially 1990, and Beacon 2014. She may have done modest warmups for recent 2023 Christmas shows, but it’s speculation
17:55 - I think you’re referring to the 2001 period when she said she had very little sleep. I’m not exactly sure how mental illness has affected her in 1998, but she was under emotional stress from her divorce, she was drinking, and she was definitely overworked like 1998-2001 basically. She wanted to get out of the record label contract, so that’s why rainbow was recorded so quickly in 1999, and this probably inflamed her voice. 2000riah is the queen of dodging seriously- she dodges WAY more than butterflyriah.
As we all can tell and see, she was very nervous here and insecure because she knew her chest voice wasn't fully there and she was very hoars where during this era from over promoting Daydream and going straight to record Butterfly then promote it then going straight on tour but the whisltes work and come out easier and more effortlessly.

But I appreciate rainbows use of creativity despite the lack of belting. I would say she understood voice well like 2005-2010. Then it became more inconsistent

Her voice was very great during that long period in all honesty. That’s also when she was hitting her highest mixed belts and last highest belts(G#5-Bb5/B5).
Ok so for the lipped whistle comments u made, ur half right half wrong lol. The first 3 whistles of this performance, the 2 first ones from the chorus, and the 1 from the climax were 100% live. There’s many indicators of this like the fact that she always looks like that when she does those whistles, and the fact that if u listen closely enough u can hear her breath or minor “imperfections” like the rasp or extra air getting thru, the fact that the climax whistle AND the 2nd chorus whistle were improvised, etc., those are live. However the ones at the end of the song, that last sequence of whistles is lipped. This would also make sense because she’s said countless times that when her voice is hoarse and her belts aren’t there, her whistles are, which is why she’s sometimes even more bold than normal doing these whistles when she’s hoarse, like she either takes them higher or extends them for longer, they’re easier for her when she’s hoarse.

the whistles were live, except for the last ascending ones! one of her raspier years but i personally love the late 90s vocally also it's true that because of nodules, when they're harder her whistles are easier but belting is more difficult. when they're softer her whistles aren't as strong and her belts are easier

22:15 - Mariah’s vocal decline is one of the most divisive questions in the lambily for sure. What’s sad is this “bad day” in 1998 is vocally better than most of her live performances from 2012 onwards. Yes, she has abused her voice, and I believe she feels a great deal of insecurity from it. Mariah is not a good lipsyncher, she always makes it obvious by hiding her face, exaggerating or not putting any effort at all. Plus those whistles are different variations from studio and they did sound different in the other shows from the same concert, so all indicates the first 3 ones were live. Furthermore, during that time, when she was hoarser her whistles were actually usually stronger, she have said a few times that her doctor said her nodules actually helped her whistles wich was something that made her afraid of removing them, wich I have always thought imprudent for a doctor to say, I wonder how this statement have impacted her vocal health care after hearing that. By the way, during Charmbracelet and Adventures of Mimi for instance she had a lot of ease and consistency for whistles while her belting was weaker, especially during the advetures of mimi tour.
