In this episode Steve gets to road test & examine Australia's best 1958 series 1 - 107 Station Wagon. These are wonderful and rare Land Rovers, only 36 of them came to Australia in 1958, we own the last one (Australia's last Series 1). Great to get some quality documentation of this car that was restored to original some 20 years a go by Stephen 'Rolly' Robertson.

Only a true Landrover enthusiast would call a S1 Station wagon a "stunner" and comment on the smell. "A bit under powered" Understatement of the year. You are a true connoisseur sir.

The smell of an old Landy is unique, this one was restored with as close to original internal fabrics as could be found, that plus the Castrol 90 smell once everything warms up is better than any chemical induced high.

I can only hope mone comes out half as well. I saw one for sale in Wales that was a lovely car and 'only' 20K pounds.. it was for sale for ages, not sure why it was not snapped up (had a 200 tdi in it).

Very first hunting trip NT . . when we rocked up . . was other side of Berry springs , with this old landrover we bought up from Mt Isa . . old man an old Europe vet , did't help the morale when we got a bit lost around these swamps & he said that in the Africa Corp . . they shot soldiers who got too thirsty . . it put a spring in our step . . my brother & I

Hey Stu, Rolly was a great friend of mine, I've spent many an hour in and under that Landy. Not saying it's slow but with a 2 Ltr engine the South East Freeway out of Adelaide is a water bag trip. It was a great blast doing the Bay to Birdwood run, with him.

I'm about to start the restoration of my 107" pickup and looking for inspiration. With the price of diesel at the moment i may have to hurry up and get it done as the Defender costs a fortune to fill. Slowly working my way through your videos. Thanks for uploading them..

i had a 1956 series 1 107 inch Station wagon, which I drove for 25 years, bought it in 1972, it was ex SMA, it was a love-hate relationship, Never lost it in car parks,

@@VintageRestorationsAustralia Sold it to Land vehicle spares out of Silverdale N.S.W. in 1999 for $500.00, he then sold it to a chap in Riverstone apparently he got it less the freewheeling hubs, forward control rear-end drum to drum, spare gearbox and transfer case, Springs plus all the other LR junk , if you go to Instagram gregellis9476 atthe bottom of my photos you will see it

Years later I bought an SW 107 Rag Top for parts and chassis numbers were about 4 apart and they came out on the same ship Mine went SMR and the ragtop went to lend-lease Arthur Garthen had all the info on who what and where of series 1 to Australia

Great video - came up in recommendations and now subscribed. I am in Aust and have an equally rare 57 Series 1 88" Station wagon. Requires a complete restoration but one day I hope to have it on the road. Hasn't got the heater but inside is pretty much the same as this LWB but a lot shorter, no rear bench seat but has four individual seats in the back. I look forward to catching up on your other videos.

Wow! That's a very rare series 1. Is the doubble roof to reflect the heat?

Sure is a rare one Martin. The roof is a 'tropical roof' crates shade on the actual roof which keeps it cooler and makes it look cooler too :-)

With the wind blowing through in between the Safari Roof (as it's called in Africa) and the main roof it cools it down as well, also "stopping" water coming in through the air vents in the bottom roof.. What a lovely old 107". Mine needs a lot of TLC mechanically, but the buckets full of patina on the body will not be disturbed... Regards from Hermanus, the Land Rover Capitol of RSA 🇿🇦 🇿🇦

Standard S1 gearbox, no syncro on 1st or 2nd, he had fitted a couple of new gears and bearings to the box just recently.

I have one of these rare 107inch station wagons,its 1957 but unfortunately will be on market soon to concentrate on my swb sw.I love the iconic look of these machines but space at new property is dictating my decision.Ive had alot of interest from UK,one of these just sold down the road to French buyer.😔😔

How slow would that be with a full load of passengers and camping gear up a hill? Still love it though.

I found my 109 painfully slow at first, now I just chill and enjoy the pace. Took the door tops off on the weekend and that makes them feel a little faster :-)

The later models were fitted with a single whiper on the rear window to wipe off bugs that flies into it from the back... I had a plastic bag overtaking me on a downhill in light windy conditions in my 107...but what a pleasure, more a journey, everytime you get into it... White knuckles on the steering wheel, biting your lips, concentrating on gauges, smells, (electrical and oil) noises, whining of gearbox, transfer case, humming of diffs, and then the brakes.... The breaks or brakes??? The only thing that changes when you slam on your Landie's brakes is the expression in your face.... Love them to bits 🇿🇦

Base model, nothing fancy, good old work horse. Still go anywhere that your hundred thousand plus toyota snowploughs would be struggling to go. Pull the ass out of the titanic.
