My great great grandfather was the Drum Major for the 54th Virginia infantry regiment which fought in most of the battles in the Western theater up until Johnston's surrender in NC.

My 3rd-great grandfather served in that unit! Joined up in Floyd County, Va in October of '61. He died in May of '62, probably from disease.

Thanks. My great great grandfather was from Floyd as well. I believe most of the men in the 54th were from there and Montgomery Co. I have a book on the history of the regiment, including muster roles. What was your ancestors name?

@@davide9658 His name was Samuel R Cox, he was actually from Christiansburg in Montgomery county.

I see his name in the book I mentioned: "54th Virginia Infantry, The Virginia Regimental Histories Series", by Sherwood and Weaver. It's a good source of information if you can still find it.

Nice video. I particularly liked the very short clip of the soldier doing a "manual of arms" with his musket as he did when he was a young soldier during the Civil War.

The Industrial Revolution was the beginning of the end by my estimation. Now, with computers, automation, etc. there are very few men who possess their fortitude

Governor of Wisconsin @ 7:13, Phillip La Follette. His father, Robert La Follette also served as governor (~1901) as well as in both chambers of Congress. While Republicans both, dad Bob ran for president as the nominee of his newly created Progressive Party, as did Phillip for his second term (separated from his first term) for governor. (Teddy Roosevelt did also -- his was actually the Progressive Party, not the nicknamed Bull Moose Party.) Although you hear the term "progressive" bandied about today when referring to the left, the term was originally attached to Republicans. Progressive politics was the theme of the day and Bob La Follette during his tenure in the Congress was a strong advocate who helped push Roosevelt and Taft to be more progressive in their politics. Very interesting political history of these La Follette men.
