What an iconic voice Eric Carmen has.He gets nowhere near enough credit for his early work with the Rasberries.
@lauraallen55
@lauraallen55 Год назад
Right?! He was so very talented and pretty young when he wrote all the songs for the Raspberries, then for himself and then others. He had a fantastic voice, and I read that he wrote this with the girl's dialogue being suggestive rather than the guy's in order to get past censors. He also said that he asked himself what makes people like songs, and the answer was a catchy chorus. So, he made the verses really short and the choruses really long. He had aa piano as the only piece of furniture in his living room for years. He wrote prolifically from the age of 21 or so to 26 to fill up 4 albums for the Raspberries. I get a Roy Orbison vibe from his voice. He wrote the hit song Almost Paradise sung by Mike Reno and Anne Wilson. Oddly, he did not write one of the songs that became a hit for him later on: Hungry Eyes.

Sometimes, songs are meant to just be fun. They are not written to save the planet, stop all wars, bring about the rise of Capricorn in the night's sky or give you the whitest teeth. This song rocks and then slips into a suggestive and sensual lovers' decision. Eric Carmen did himself proud when he penned this.

It's 10.30pm Tuesday night 12/03/2024 and I've just flicked the T.V. over to Ch 9 in Sydney. They were showing The Raspberries "Go all the Way" I thought "Why are they playing that?" "Is Eric touring soon?" Then I thought "Oh no he hasn't died" "Has he?" My fears were confirmed by the news voice over person. "Eric Carmen was 74" Now I can't stop crying. Not only did Eric help create one of the greatest, mind blowing Guitar riffs in Rock history, he then composed some of the most tasteful Ballads of all time. Good quality Ballads are extremely hard to write. Thanks for the great music and the brilliant singing voice Eric. Eric lived a successful existence and died peacefully in his sleep. "Come on Baby!!!" RIP - Eric Carmen

They don't write 'em like this anymore. The production, arrangement, and performance are second to none. You begin with that bad ass rock riff that rolls into that smooth Elvis-like verse to an undeniably catchy chorus with backing vocals, back into that power riff and change with other great changes and bits to the end. That Beatle-esque Come on! Come on! COME ON! Wooooo whoooo who! So Paul! GREAT stuff.

Melodic, Beatlesque, power pop...I was 12 when this one hit the charts. Didn't have any direct, older musical influence yet, being the eldest...so AM radio pop charts/TV were it. Had this track on K-Tel Records, Believe in Music compilation. My tastes would take an abrupt change in only a couple years, meeting my late, best friend. Memories...regardless, that Guardians of the Galaxy, movie/soundtrack, introduced new generations to old school cool❗️ ☆ Always loved this ear candy👍🏻 🇨🇦

I was 12 when this came out. Wasn't the song lyrics for me then...it was that key and guitar riff. That's the year I told my parents I wanted to play guitar. Now, at 63?, I'm playing guitar in our church worship band. But...those three opening chords....light reverb, perfect tone. STILL great today! Yep...I, too, hear Elvis, Freddy and Roy, too. If I were sitting in a room striving to write the perfect hit song...this would be it. :) I actually found your site searching on this song.

Hey, as one said that they thought the Raspberries were saying " Please Don't Go Away ", it is important to note that, 50 years ago, the only way to know for sure what the lyrics were was to buy the LP and read the included lyrics. Back then we , in some cases, guessed having no tools like today to find out immediately...but we enjoyed singing along just the same. 🙃

You like it because it's a fun song. I recall they were slammed for sounding too British (even though they were from Cleveland, OH). When it was released it played everywhere in Ohio on radio and blew up nationally as well. That was summertime between my sophomore and junior years in high school. I was taking driver's education in summer school. And before the end of the summer, I had a license and was jamming out to this song in my car. Great memories. Also remember fondly the girl I had a crush on at the time. Never dated her, though. But we became good friends during the final year of high school. She sat beside me in senior English class.

This song combined the subject matter of Shirelles 'Tonights the Night' and Carole King's 'Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow' with Free's 'Alright Now' guitar riff. Genius. Eric Carmen had the same issue as BIlly Squire. Both were looking for solo careers but made bad choices in presentation, so they were cut short.

"I'm trying to explain it. It's like, I have, like, no words, really..." -- Angela "Talking about music is like dancing about architecture" -- F. Zappa. It put you in a good place. What else must it do? I've always really liked it too. This one is one of the cornerstones of Power Pop, as far as I'm concerned. And that's high praise. Eric Carmen's (the lead singer here) "All By Myself" is probably not so much in that category, but it's very good, nonetheless, and was also a hit a bit later. If you like this, folks will suggest that you listen to bands like Bad Finger, Big Star, or even Cheap Trick -- and you definitely should.
