Nice project! A difficult choice i guess. Waterproofness vs ventilation, both counteract each other. As in one fan to blow out hot air has no use until there is an opening for fresh (salty) air as well. Since the transformer is fully waterproof i would not put it in the box but outside of it. Maybe with a light coat of spray paint to protect the aluminium for salt air. One heat source gone. The Pi is another story. It will be running hot. Where used to stick heatsinks and fans right on top processors, but this can in my opinion only work if a rather big heatsink is put halfway and air tight (kitted) trough the case. Pi on the inside, with a heat transfer block attached from chip to the sink and if needed a fan outside. the only venerable part would be the fan, but easy to swap when outside the box. Well, just some free thinking here:) Like to see your choise and for sure your next project video!

Yes this is the struggle I also contemplated a heatpipe for the pie to take the heat out of the enclosure and keep it heat sealed I may still do this, I plan to add a recording temp device to track enclosure temp when operating and ambient to predict enclosure temp in the tropics Thanks for the dialogue

I am not familiar with heatpipes. But as a heatsink i was thinking in terms of the type as on the back of your Victron Orion. A big sturdy chunk ribbed aluminium that can take a blow since it is outside the box. If half inside, maybe you can use heatpipes inside to have a bit more freedom to place the board. Or use a simple flat stock copper bar. Good luck with figuring it out !! :) You will find something.

For IMUs I’d pack them into separate waterproof boxes. I’d have several onboard. You need to calibrate them by rotating in all directions. So I’d have small boxes for them.

On that big box I’d consider waterproof pressure valve vent. Like you see on Pelican boxes

With the screen you need to not only see it. You need to be able to touch. For zooming, entering waypoints, requesting weather data. Controlling autopilot etc. From nav station below deck using mouse and keyboard would be more convenient. Below deck is usually your strategic navigation planning, weather, and from cockpit your tactical navigation (for a day and hours ahead). Also does your screen have waterproof speakers for alarms?

I am thinking about a second screen for the Nav desk use a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard for route planning when below and use the waterproof screen in the cockpit as you suggest I plan to keep the waterproof box enclosed with a filtered breather vent and large finned heatsinks to cool the cabinet

@@davethemmp Google for “Raspberry Pi 5 powered aluminum industrial panel PC goes on sale”. It seems a great option in 10” for below deck nav station

@@davethemmp And for your big box I would put another industrial pi5. Also EDATECH. ED-IPC3020 Has NMEA 0183, RTC, audio in/out. Look it up

You would also need USB hub (powered, not back feeding power), Ethernet switch, travel LTE/5G router, and i2c. Are you planning NMEA 2000? I guess you should since you have Victron on it already. Then you need something to feed NMEA 2000 into pi. Can be done with esp32 Actisense protocol via USB. Or NMEA 2000 hat (Can) directly to pi. For that reason I would avoid extra hat as DAISY AIS. I would get DAISY AIS usb version

Good points, what do you think about sensors via wifi I found Yackmux they build NMEA-0183 to wifi modules not sure how to get NMEA 2K to the Pi, I have seen Hats Copper industries, and Digital Yacht builds one but expensive www.yakbitz.com/YakBak.aspx digitalyacht.ca/product/ikonvert-nmea-2000-to-usb-converter/

@@davethemmp the cheapest way to get NMEA 2000 into pi is build your own Actisense usb equivalent. I’ve done it with m5stack. It’s actually very simple. The code and instructions are in GitHub bbn-nmea2000-m5atom project. Another option (same thing) from HatLabs in Finland (has a box). It’s actually would be a good source for your connectors needs. And other options are nmea2000 (CanBus) hats. Waveshare etc. They create can network interface in your pi. So canbus becomes part of your network stack and it will be reported by ifconfig utility.

@@davethemmp I would go to NMEA 0183 to usb instead of WiFi. FTDI chip USB to RS845 dongles

I’ve replied in more details to your questions about NMEA 2000. But RU-vid removed my comments. Many of the comments just disappear. It’s almost impossible to communicate here

What charts do you use with opencpn?

O-Charts if you use a raspberry Pi buy the USB dongle it allows you to download the charts many times on multiple devices with the dongle.
