I'm definitely getting the new Pi before anything else. But, I went to the Orange Pi site a couple of days ago. There's an Orange Pi 5+ up for pre-order. The specs are insane. 32 GB of RAM available on launch. A full size 2280 NVME. It's like they stuffed everything onto this board that they could. Too bad that they still haven't caught up in software and support. The Pi 5 is still going to be a better device overall.
@AndrewTSq
@AndrewTSq 11 месяцев назад
It also has hardware support for vp9 (youtube) and av1 which the rpi5 lacks. Saw on forum one of the rpi guys claimed rpi5 could do 1080p60 with one core of software rendering, but that looks to be untrue
@helloken
@helloken 11 месяцев назад
I thought they OPi 5+ has been available for at least a couple of months? Maybe the 32gb RAM variant is new? I bet that's it because I could not find the 32gb RAM version before. I believe that Orange Pi 5 has superior hardware full stop based on what I have seen. The gap between it and the Rpi 5 seems too large to overcome by software optimization, plus the option for 16gb and 32gb. Mind you, the RPi 5 is "likely" to get 16gb in the future I've heard somewhere...can't remember where or how credible that was... On a side note, I didn't realize the OPi 5 came in a 5B, 5, and 5+ variants...? Seems like the 5B is just the 5 with wifi/bluetooth added...not sure if that's the only change... Was really hoping for 1440p/60 from the RPi 5 so can't say I'm not a little disappointed, but I'll hold off more judgement for a few more months to let it cook a little. But yeah, it's the software and community support that makes the RPi 5 compelling...

Am still waiting to pull the trigger on the OPi 5+. Kernel is ancient (5.1 from Debian 10) on Armbian even. Perhaps this is due to driver development stagnation common at h/w vendors; anyone know? I want higher speed PCIe than the RPi 5 has, hopefully they'll get there on a larger form factor board.

You can't overcome a 2280 with microsd bs or usb ssd. Also pretty lame it needs 5V 5AMPER.. wth, this is a nuc, not an sbc.

Thanks Lee for this informative video because I differently am going to upgrade my RasPad 3 with the Raspberry V. A couple of things to note: ETA PRIME showed me that I was not -pronouncing your channel name (LEESPS VIDEO) instead of (LEE PSP VIDEO). and when you say BETA and pronounce it (BEE TA), I was yelled at by my 2nd grade teacher she would say it's pronounced (Bay TA) not (BEE TA) when I was doing (Show and tell.) 9:35 I hate to admit that my main use case for my raspberry pi has been to be a travel router using a rpi3 and a usb Wi-Fi adapter with a simple script which takes in a MAC address and an SSID. This is necessary for crappy hotels that limit how many devices you can join to their network.
@chandlerbing7570
@chandlerbing7570 11 месяцев назад
I used to do that too. Last year I had to get a cheap travel router because the hotel WiFi had a weird login page my pi 4 was struggling with. Thankfully the travel router had a hotel WiFi feature and had no problem connecting to it. The pi however made a great 720p RU-vid and Netflix machine.

The new Pi Os rocks and just highlights why you buy a Raspberry Pi , support !!!!!! My first gen Pi4 now runs just over 100 MGHz higher , cooler and rock solid no random crashes... My Pi3 B+ runs harder on cpu , gpu , core and mem .... The Pi3 B+is far quicker and far more usable although mousepad seems to have a problem starting up quickly , I found Pluma does not... The Plank dock works 32 bit system on the Pi3 B+ but not on the Pi4 64 bit system .. The one thing that is missing at the moment from the menu is the Themes option under Preferences... You can however install the KDE desktop and ever thing works great... !!!!!!! Well done Raspberry Pi Foundation.... !!!!!!!

I tried it out on my Raspberry Pi 4b 8gb. Bad news first. I definitely recommend sticking to Bullseye unless you're overclocking this quite a bit. Bullseye is a little slower at default clockspeeds, but not as much as Bookworm. Overclocked, Bookworm is an improvement when it comes to screen tearing and overall visual presentation. Cursors, windows, and scrolling webpages looks smoother in Wayland compared to x11. RU-vid and Twitter load about the same as bullseye, maybe slightly slower. RU-vid performance is about the same. The hardware video acceleration addition to Firefox is welcome too.

I doubt very much that any modern version of Android could run in 1/2 GB RAM that the Pi Zero has, unless someone did some EXTREME customisation and optimisation of it. I first used Android on a Google Nexus 7 tablet around 2012, that ran Android 4.4.2 and had 1 GB RAM, and even that would struggle as you added more apps to it.

I’m genuinely disappointed with the new Raspberry Pi 5 board. I had higher expectations regarding its hardware capabilities, particularly given the availability of other single-board computers with significantly superior specifications. In my view, the new board resembles more of a Raspberry Pi 4B+ that was initially intended to launch six months after the 4B model but was inadvertently overlooked. Yes, the software support is nice and all, but I don't feel there's a lot of room for improvements..
@terrydaktyllus1320
@terrydaktyllus1320 11 месяцев назад
So buy a used SFF PC with a 3rd or 4th generation Core i5 or i7 CPU in it and 4 GB or 8 GB RAM for the same price (or less) than a Pi 5 if you need more power. It's all very well sitting there being "disappointed" but ultimately it depends whether or not you have an "engineer's mindset" or not. If I need to build a computing solution, I work out what the end result needs to do and then choose the hardware that I need accordingly. A lot of the time, that isn't a Raspberry Pi. If you have a "gamer mentality" where everything is just about "the bigger the number, the better it is" (e.g. number of CPU cores, amount of RAM, number of FPS, number of GPU shaders, etc. etc.) then, yes, you're going to disappointed a lot. But the problem there is the self-entitled gamer mentality that is the complete opposite to that of the engineer. Likewise, if you take a family saloon car off-roading for the day, you're going to be "disappointed" when you discover the suspension is completely knackered at the end of it. But whose fault would that be? "Right tool for the job" comes to mind here.
@RazielMessiah
@RazielMessiah 11 месяцев назад
@@terrydaktyllus1320 I get where you're coming from, and your point about choosing the right tool for the job is spot on. Just to give you some context, I've already got this cluster of 8 Raspberry Pi 4B units, and they're doing the job just fine. On top of that, I've got an Intel NUC server that handles some tasks even better than the cluster. My disappointment with the Raspberry Pi 5 isn't because I'm all about 'bigger is better,' but more about my expectations given how competitive the single-board computer market has become. I mean, we're in late 2023, and the Pi 5 feels more like something from 2021. I can use OPi's latest 5B+ top model in some of my workloads without problems, but I'll need 2 units of RPi 5 to barely get the same results. Don't get me wrong, the Pi 5 has its place, and I'm sure it'll be great for many people. I just thought there'd be a bigger leap in hardware capabilities. But hey, the SBC market is diverse, and I'm looking forward to seeing more cool stuff in the future... Heck, maybe RPi will soon release a 5+ model with twice the hardware, who knows? I just hope they'll have plenty of them for everyone, at a reasonable price.
@terrydaktyllus1320
@terrydaktyllus1320 11 месяцев назад
@@RazielMessiah I don't want to come over as some kind of "Raspberry Pi fanboy" because nothing could be further from the truth. I started using Linux back in 1996, Gentoo Linux specifically as my main OS since 2003, and I am perfectly happy building Gentoo to run on anything because that's the main strength of Gentoo anyway - it can run on anything. I also use Orange Pi's, Banana Pi's, NanoPi's, Asus Tinkerboards as non-Raspberry Pi SBC's because I am a "natural tinkerer" anyway. But SBC's originate from the hobbyist maker community who themselves don't mind a bit of "tinkering" to make things work. The fact that other SBC's don't have the same amount of support that Raspberry Pi is therefore less important to that community. But Raspberry Pi is an anomaly amongst SBC's because the Pi Foundation have turned it into a "near consumer device" anyway - if there's anything you need to do with a Raspberry Pi, then someone will have made step-by-step documentation or a video tutorial here to do it. And credit to the Pi Foundation for doing that. Unfortunately, the down side of that excellent support is that it has created a community of Pi Users who do not know how to use any other platforms to build what they want to build because they are not "makers". And that's a limitation that they have that I (and other makers) don't have because we have the level of knowledge and skill to use other platforms for our builds. In summary, there's an air of the Raspberry Pi having to be an "all rounder device" that can do anything, and disappointment when some people feel it doesn't meet that role - and that isn't a Raspberry Pi problem anyway, that's them for having too high expectations in the first place.

The article suggests a clean install We have always said that for a major version upgrade, you should re-image your SD card and start again with a clean image. In the past, we have suggested procedures for updating an existing image to the new version, but always with the caveat that we do not recommend it, and you do this at your own risk. This time, because the changes to the underlying architecture are so significant, we are not suggesting any procedure for upgrading a Bullseye image to Bookworm; any attempt to do this will almost certainly end up with a non-booting desktop and data loss. The only way to get Bookworm is either to create an SD card using Raspberry Pi Imager, or to download and flash a Bookworm image from here with your tool of choice.

Would be nice to see benchmarks and comparison between Debian 11 32 bit and Debian 12 64 bit using wayland on Pi4. I have only used 32 bit systems on Pi4 until now, and i wanted to know will i get a noticeable improvement switching to 64 bit Debian.

THE IMAGER HAS ISSUES WITH NON FAT MICRO SD CARDS WHICH NO ONE SEEMS TO ADDRESS ???
@leepspvideo
@leepspvideo 11 месяцев назад
I haven’t had any issues with imager using several sd cards and usb devices overwriting various operating systems. Does it work if you erase your sd card first?
@terrydaktyllus1320
@terrydaktyllus1320 11 месяцев назад
The imager doesn't care about how SD cards are formatted because the OS image itself contains the correct formatting of the SD card and just overwrites any existing formatting that it finds. This is why, when you boot a Pi for the first time, it usually tells you that it is expanding the filesystem to fill the entire card - because if it was built with, say, a 4GB root partition then that is how it will be written initially to a 32GB card, leaving around 28GB of it unformatted.

I just updated to this on my Raspberry Pi 4 but I will say it uses way too much memory on a 2GB model. I had 31kB left of memory when trying to use firefox :) works better on my 4GB RPi4. But my Jetson Nano 4GB feels much better both in desktop and on youtube.

Here's a challenege for anyone interested: Is there any way to manually setup a dark theme/mode for the raspberry Bookworm (Wayland) OS? ... As someone who suffers serious eye-strain, I depend on dark themes/modes and cannot for the life of me find a solution to this, there must be a way, surely?....

This is a huge step in the right direction but also a huge step backwards It's good to see that RPF is finally ditching X11 and switching to wayland in general And it's even better to see them using wayfire instead of mutter HOWEVER Since RPF seems to like backwards compatibility, the decision to use wayfire over labwc is kind of weird to me They could have kept raspberry PI OS the exact same And it could have worked the same way it did before Regardless, Change is not always bad but i hope that the average pi user is ready to experience wayfire's flaws, and wayfire's shell even more I'm hoping this gets addressed by either the creator of wayfire or RPF
@terrydaktyllus1320

...and the reason to ditch Xorg (not X11 because X11 describes the protocol, Xorg describes the implementation of that protocol) is because? Wayland clearly isn't up to the task yet, it won't be for years given the developers still can't decide how to do window positioning, and Xorg leaves it to the window manager anyway. And let's not have any of this "it's no longer developed" nonsense - I've been updating my Gentoo Linux systems this week and Xorg 21.1.8 was released on 14th September 2023 as an update I have just applied. The only people that care about Wayland are gamers that think they're going to get a few FPS more in "Cybersplatt 4044" or "Starfailed" on the overpriced NVIDIA GPUs that mummy and daddy each donated a kidney for when there little Johnny demanded one for Christmas. For everyone else, Xorg "just works".
@dave7244
@dave7244 11 месяцев назад
Wayland is crap. I don't understand why people get excited about it, I wish that it wasn't being made default everywhere. I hate it how even with conservative distros you end up a constant beta tester when using Linux. I have the following issues with Wayland (that I told aren't a problem for some reason) - The settings files of your WM are hidden away 3 directories deep in .config directory. - I have random mouse lockups when I have a lot of tabs open in Firefox and Brave (so it isn't a browser issue and doesn't happen with X). - Full ccreensharing doesn't work on load of apps because of the permissions model. No I don't care that X is technically insecure, I need screensharing to work. - I use X forwarding via SSH. Been working for decades now.
@terrydaktyllus1320
@terrydaktyllus1320 11 месяцев назад
I'm not going to simply say "Wayland is crap" but it certainly isn't ready for production use and I think the big push for it is only coming from the gamer community who somehow believe they're going to get much better FPS numbers for their crappy "games as a service" games that they pay $70 a pop for just to sign up to DLC for the next 18 months to end up with a finished game. (Or three years in the case of "Cybersplatt 4044".) Xorg "just works" - and it's going to be around for a few years yet while Wayland developers can't even work out who is responsible for putting what windows where on a screen - if they can't even work that out, they've got a LONG way to go with a production-ready product.

My own opinion about Raspberry Pi OS since buying my rpi4 3 years ago is their OS is trash for me as a general user. The whole issue with having access to my own files on my own drives without all the unneeded su access bullshit is the biggest turn off as a user to this particular OS. A user should have immediate access to their drives and files even those in the boot directory if they wish without all the complicated command line crap involved in gaining that access. Just me but Manjaro makes that whole situation so much more user friendly immediately versus raspberry pi os the windows 95 turd edition knockoff clone. i mean come on. this damn thing cant even render icons properly in the task bar after a theming change. they get wonky as hell. and i booted this up hoping for a much more friendly update for a general user and sadly it was the same old crap. if you are a general user and want a working and nice experience without 99 percent of the su user access nazi overkill this bullshit has then go with Manjaro for your Pi. Skip this at all costs.

"My own opinion about Raspberry Pi OS since buying my rpi4 3 years ago is their OS is trash for me as a general user." Oh dear, I feel a rant coming on from a Linux snob... "The whole issue with having access to my own files on my own drives without all the unneeded su access bullshit is the biggest turn off as a user to this particular OS. A user should have immediate access to their drives and files even those in the boot directory if they wish without all the complicated command line crap involved in gaining that access." You do realise that you can just do "sudo passwd" and enter a root password if you want to just use su from that point onwards - that's a "Baby's First Linux Book" command, I thought *EVERYONE* knew that one! A user can do what they like, mate, because Linux is about choice - not the constraints you personally want to impose on everyone else. I was probably administering UNIX systems when you were "nothing more than a twinkle in your dad's eye" and UNIX (and subsequently Linux) have been designed from the ground up to allow the user to create the environment that they want to work in. I personally rarely use sudo, but if someone else wants to use it as an extra "safeguard" then so be it - crack on and have fun with it. "Just me but Manjaro makes that whole situation so much more user friendly immediately versus raspberry pi os the windows 95 turd edition knockoff clone. i mean come on." Manjaro is based on Arch and Arch is just "the poor man's Gentoo" anyway. " i mean come on. this damn thing cant even render icons properly in the task bar after a theming change. they get wonky as hell. and i booted this up hoping for a much more friendly update for a general user and sadly it was the same old crap." Why does a big Linux boy like you who wants his easy access to files need icons anyway? Surely you can use the command line... "if you are a general user and want a working and nice experience without 99 percent of the su user access nazi overkill this bullshit has then go with Manjaro for your Pi. Skip this at all costs." Yes, mate, and if you want even better performance than Manjaro on a Pi, put Gentoo on it that is even faster where every application is custom-compiled for the specific platform. In summary, if you don't like it then don't use it - nobody cares about your whining and if others like it, then leave them to it and keep your big nose out. You like and use Manjaro, I like and use Gentoo, others can like and use what they want without you or I giving a damn.
