Geusteau: *burnt out* “What happened to us, Skinner?” Skinner: *deadpaned* “We woke up.” I love that because is shows both Skinner and Geusteau in a very different yet vey human way. Geusteau may be a wise man and master of cooking who sees cooking as art, but he’s also a naïve idealist who stuck in the past. He’s so passionate about cooking that he can’t comprehend that franchising his name is the only thing that’s allowing him to keep doing what he loves. Now he’s a burnt out wreck trying to hold on to and barely grasping what little dignity he has left. Skinner may be a greedy opportunist who only ever saw others for what use he could get from them, but he’s also a jaded realist that lives in cynical reality. One who only saw cooking as a form of income which gave knowledge Geusteau will never have. So when the restaurant was headed towards finical ruin he had Geusteau franchise his name to keep the lights on another day. Now he just doesn’t care anymore so long has he makes money. Geusteau is a passionate idealist but wants to live in a fantasy, where Skinner is a cynical prick living in cruel reality.

Seeing Gusteau in the state he was in must've really shattered Remy. Because HE WAS inspired by the man, but as a rat he can't reach out to comfort or reassure his hero with communication. That is something a lot of Artists struggle with, or people who set out to make something greater in the long-run. It really does feel like nobody cares and you influenced nobody. If you guys know anyone who is suffering creatively, please for the love of God reassure them. It might be what saves them.

I wonder what the original cut of the movie would’ve been like with Gusteau alive….

@@osmanyousif7849 In the early version of the film, Gusteau would have been the one that tasted Remy’s ratatouille and would have been transported back to his childhood, reigniting his love of cooking. However, once Brad Bird took over the film and killed Gusteau off in order to cut down the amount of stories being told, the film’s climax was given to Ego.

I wonder if they could have done something similar with Skinner and one of the other chefs in the final product. It would foreshadow when they burn the frozen food cardboard cutouts, as we as give some more character to the man. The sad thing is, while I get Skinner is supposed to be the bad guy (and he's certainly the least sympathetic after Ego lets go of his...ego), a lot of people end up like this, essentially prioritizing making sure they get by financially, even if they're not thought of as Great artists as a consequence. The man's a jackass, but he also had the unenviable job of managing a high class restaurant after its famous owner was shot down by a critic and died in despair. That's not a position anyone would want to be in, and I suspect more of us than would admit it would likely crack under that kind of pressure.

100% agree. I think that Skinner and Geusto's relationship definitely could have been explored more, I wish we got to see them interact a little bit before his death, perhaps in a flashback or something.

Was he really a bad guy? Sure he got away with what he did in the end, even shutting Gusteau's down. But at the same time, if you found out that your food was made by a bunch of rats in the kitchen (even if they were clean...) I still think the restaurant would have been closed regardless.

Gotta say they nailed the objective with the new scene of the first one they talked about, It always stayed into my mind that initial scene of Remi just exploring france and then exploring the kitchen with that brief look into the restaurant contrasting how quiet it was compared to the kitchen

What about Marion Cotillard? Would make more sense since she's French as well.
