Fun facts 1) In order to properly animate Linguini's wet clothing, a Pixar employee jumped into a pool while wearing Linguini's uniform. 2) Real rats don't have a gag reflex. Linguini's soup was so awful, it forced Remy to evolve one for a comedic gag.

@@venusxaino I believe that was Linguini's hat. Skinner didn't know for certain that Remy was controlling Linguini at this point, only that he saw rats everywhere, so the "it came back rodent" line was just to spook him even more.

When Colette trains Linguini she says “You can’t cook like Mommy.”, but when Remy cooks for Ego it is the reminder of the cooking like Mom that brings him back and makes him love it. One detail I love is how Ego is so thin as he says “If I don’t like it I don’t swallow”, but once he receives good food he starts to put weight on by the end. Also the fact that Ego is voiced by legendary actor Peter O’ Toole makes him even better!

"you can't cook like mommy" just refers to professional cooking and how techniques such as mise en place, knife cutting skills, etc. have to be fast and consistent to serve hundreds of people each night... but the homecook doesn't have to be as fast, precise, and clean/organized/prepped. That's why Colette teaches him about keeping his station clean, not being too slow, keeping his arms in tight so that he can work on the line shoulder to shoulder with other cooks without getting in the way, etc.

This is my most favorite Pixar movie of all time, as a kid, my family was having money problems and life wasn't that good for me overall. I would just watch this movie over and over as a comfort during those times, the music from this movie is such a comfort to me also. I think I remember reading somewhere that the reason Remy is able to control Linguine is because he's barely in control of his body anyway. Notice how throughout the movie he's really clumsy and constantly stumbling over himself and his words, with such little self control and discipline it made it easier for Remy to control him. So Remy probably couldn't control Collete since she's a lot more composed.

The irony is that Linguine actually does have control over his body while on his rollerblades. The idea isn't that Linguine is universally clumsy, just that he, like many people, need specific contexts for our best qualities to shine: he was clumsy because he was not playing to his strengths.

Part of Anton's flashback is in reference to Collette's speech about cooking, how its not a cute job like mummy in the kitchen. Remy was able to prove her wrong by making gourmet food that reminded Anton of how his mother used to make Ratatouille. He was able to put the "soul" into his food while still being rigorous enough to keep up in the kitchen, which is even signified by the kitchen lighting. At the start its very bright and sterile, but when Remy is cooking the whole kitchen has this soft warm glow.

I do agree with some of Collette’s points. Cooking on the line requires a discipline that is much more hectic than just cooking for 4 people who are okay if you are a little late with the food. I watch a lot of Bar Rescue and Kitchen Nightmares. Each job even if it doesn’t have restrictions, indeed have requirements.

@@bluecoin3771yes, it's important to remember cartoons never reflect reality 100%. it's incredibly important for a chef to have passion for what they do, however, the difference between a good home cook and a professional chef with a lot of experience is extremely large. the experiences you get from the two are also extremely different. the standards, timing, efficiency needed are in two different ballparks. In the end both collette and remy are correct, knowing how to make food that feeds not only the stomach but the soul, and having the skills, standards, and efficiency one can only acquire through being a professional chef are both important.

I had Hodgkin's Lymphoma Cancer when I was 7 years old, and every time I would go in for Chemotherapy, I'd ask them to play this movie. Holds a special place in my heart, and was a good distraction in a rough time.

Everything about Anton Ego is just amazing in this movie...his design, name (pretty on the nose considering what he represents), his typewriter shaped like a skull, office like a coffin and those lines and comeback are legendary ! @@michael2rutherford238 I first heard about it back in 2010 on some NatGeo doc and it blew my mind when I came to realise food Michelin is the same as tyre Michelin. Also it's only 3 star max per place(which according to the original guide was "worth a detour" ). Today the Michelin inspectors are always on the road and remain completely anonymous. Even their families are told a cover story and don't know what they do.

@@jessicaross7288 I don't know if you're referring to the "Old lady in the beginning is Ego's mother" theory but apparently that's been debunked by the director, they were just re-using 3D props. However at the end of the day it is a movie (=art), so it's totally down to interpretation!

Fun fact for 16:39 There really is a shop in Paris with dead rats hanging on the display called Aurouze. They have 21 dead rats hanging by their neck, crushed by steel traps. They’ve been there since 1925.

My favourite fan-theory from this movie is that the woman at the start, whose house the rats are living in, is actually Anton Ego's mother. She clearly likes cooking and food, having numerous cookbooks and watching the cooking channel, and I think people have worked out that during the flashback that we see to Ego as a child, the house seems to match up.

There is also a similar shelf for vegetables and fruits that is in the background when she appears and when Remy is in the old ladies kitchen. But that might just be recycling background(the shot of Dory swimming up to Marlin and saying "It'll be okay"in "Finding Nemo"is the same both when she meets him and when they're in the whale, so recycled.)

There's also a theory that it's Linguini's house too. Meaning they're brothers. Or half brothers. The house that an animated short were two aliens try to abduct a very gangly young man but fail, only making him go all over the place in the house with the tractor beam controls, shows how maybe Remy was able to control him. And the house looked similar to the one at the beginning of the film

Ratatouille is a rather simple dish in the grand scheme of things. It's basically stewed vegetables with olive oil, garlic and herbs. The simplicity of it makes it easy to tweak it however you like.

This is one of my favorite Pixar films. In the ending the critic doesn’t say a rat cooked it, just that he loved his meal. Theoretically he wouldn’t know there were rats in the kitchen unless he went to check or the health inspector shut them down. His reputation stays in tact.

Let me add this: I love how the whole theme about food driving you back in past memories fits perfectly with classic french litterature. In Proust's "à la recherche du temps perdu (Searching of the lost time)", the author explains how the taste of petite madelaine takes him back to his childhood, like an attempt to win a battle with time. Ego gets the same feeling and it fits so nicely since its set in Paris. Also, I like how Remy is choosing a "peseant" dish. He knows his roots and he knows how to cook just like Anton's mom since he grew up and learnt how to cook in french country side. A chef with so humble roots reminding one of the top critics that kind of country side comfort but in a more gourmet, haute cuisine way presented. It adds to the whole "a great artist can come from anywhere" since Paris and haute cuisine/high society is famous for it's snob manners where someone could be treated as less worthy because of his less fancy origins.

The decision to have Remy narrate the scene where Anton Ego meets the chef after trying the ratatouille is so much better than if it had been done through dialogue. Patton Oswalt really has a comforting way of delivery, even for dramatic moments, and the Pixar animators of the time carried the rest of the scene through nonverbal communication wonderfully. And Peter O'Toole's critical review of criticism is so perfectly delivered, I'll never forget it.

The ratatouille dish was created by Chef Thomas Keller based on a dish called confit byaldi. Anthony Bourdain is in the "special thanks" in the credits and the montage of the cooks is very similar (at least in tone) to his description of the "pirate crew" of cooks he worked with in Kitchen Confidential.

Fun fact: the dish they cook at the end is technically not a Ratatouille, but a Tian, the difference reside in the fact that in a Ratatouille the vegetables are cut in big dices (like what we saw in the flashback), while in a Tian it's in thin slices. Stil one of my favorite movies despite that.

They explained why they did the hair thing in the commentary. They basically experimented with a bunch of options. Remy talking to him, running around his shirt, etc, and it did play out quite right. So they came up with the idea of him being a puppeteer using hair to make it work. So they basically wrote the process of them figuring it out into the story as Remy trying to figure out how to control Alfredo.

For anyone who finds joy in the creation of the arts in any of its forms, this is definitely a must watch. The creativity of the story, the fantastic cinematography, the beautiful setting, the animation, the music the charachterisation and every tiny intelligent and well thought out detail of this combined is spectacular. I will happily say that although this film wasn't my favourite pixar film as a child, as an adult I realise the many subtleties of this film add so much value to the story and that this film majoritively was written with an adult tone (of course kids can enjoy it too). What a masterpiece.

Still one of my favourite Pixar movies of all time, up there with Wall-E, Incredibles and Finding Nemo. For some reason my eyes get a little leaky every time I rewatch the ending, it's such a powerful message

So ratatouille is traditionally a type of stewed vegetable dish popular in rural France, created in the late 17th century where farms had to maximize the use of what they couldn't sell so they would make ratatouille because it would feed a large family but could be made of cheap leftovers

i feel like it’s worth mentioning that ratatouille (the dish) is considered a “struggle meal” of sorts. in fact the dish in Anton Ego’s flashback is what authentic ratatouille looks like. essentially it is a stew made out of whatever you can find in the fridge. that is why Colette was so surprised when Remy told them what he wanted to cook for Anton.

This movie and Food Wars gave me such an appreciation for the art of cooking and not only chefs but anyone who makes an effort to cook. I love how Food Wars and this movie shows how meaningful food can be for people an that its not restricted to the upper classes but can be enjoyed by anyone

@@f1rst_musician_bootmaker291 I had the pleasure of seeing it in theatres when it came out and it blew me away. Instantly bought it on DVD after that and have watched it countless times. It's such a treasure trove of inspiration. There was a period where I was vegan and my family fully supported me through it despite not being vegan themselves. My Aunt made me a vegan ratatouille dish and I ate it while watching the movie. It was delicious. I still have such great feelings attributed to both this movie and the meal itself, now. That childhood flashback scene rips me apart because this *movie* has that effect on me at the age of 32 and that scene pulls it out of me. Unreal. One of my GOATs for sure.

Honestly, probably my favourite animated movie and I loved watching your reactions to it. Other than Ego's still relevant final review, I think the bit that gets me most is after Linguine gives his passionate Disney-esque speech to the staff - who don't know they're in a Disney movie, so they do the smart thing and walk out. That is the Pixar difference, for me.

Ego’s ending speech is amazingly impactful, and I get teary eyed when I hear it. This movie is so beautiful, I love it. Definitely my favorite Pixar movie.

27:20 Ratatouille usually looks like it does in Ego's memory -- stewed vegetables (zucchini, eggplant, bell peppers, tomatoes). What they made here is confit byaldi, an elevated presentation of ratatouille, developed by Thomas Keller. I saw this movie in the theater with my little sister (who was 9 at the time), and she asked me to make the dish for her. She liked it, so I must have done something right.

This movie, Cars 1, and The Incredibles are easily the top 3 Pixar movies I used to watch on repeat as a kid. Ego’s ending monologue STILL gets me to this day, “Not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist CAN come from anywhere.”

This is my favorite Pixar movie. I love Up, Inside Out, Incredibles, Monsters Inc, Toy Story, etc... But Ratatouille makes my heart smile the most and doesn't make me emotionally drained like the others. It's truly a film I put on when I'm having a bad day.

The ending of this Pixar flick is a tear jerker. In a way Ego’s personality was that of Remy’s father. A male figure who, through life experiences, has calloused into the character we meet. At the end you see both of them relaxing (one finding purpose staring at the stars after a nice meal, the other finally enjoying what he use to critique for a job). Amazing!

I’m in awe even more everytime I go back and rewatch Ego’s speech. I think it’s quite possibly the greatest scene in all of cinema considering it is literally about how we define art and what it means to be an artist.

Truly the best of pixar's works in my eyes, its an absolutely stunning film that uses the medium to the fullest to tell a thematically rich story and immerse you in the incredibly lush and extravagant atmosphere of Paris. Glad you guys had a good time with it.

17:03 There was a special feature on the DVD called "Your friend the rat" that exposits that it was the fleas that hitchhiked on rats that spread the plague, and not the rats. And in fact, rats weren't even the main carriers of the plague fleas and other insects, it was humans...

I didn't know who Patton Oswald was before this movie. It was really entertaining with the concept and characters, but that moment the critic ate the ratatouille and went back to his childhood, OMG. What a moment that made the movie for me.
