Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando is an unheard of success: A sequel that started production five months BEFORE the original game released; a sequel that pinpointed its precursor’s flaws and addressed them; a rare perfect sequel. But a perfect sequel doesn't necessarily make a perfect game, and Ratchet & Clank 2's development certainly shows some growing pains. Let's Lock & Load and break down one of the PlayStation 2's greatest games, look deep into its development behind the scenes, and rediscover why Going Commando is such a historic game.

Really really awesome but you forgot something that's important (my opinion) the unused weapons 58:00 appeared again but not ratchet used them the mines were used by clunk in secret agent clank (nefarious suit) the boots used by the eye (quarks space level) i know it's just a small detail but it would be a very nice addition and i also know that secret agent clank is not made by insomniac

I never made the connection between Angela's lack of a tail and her lack of balance until now, but it makes so much sense I'm ashamed I never thought of it sooner. I do wish the writing around her was more competent and she got more chances to return in the series because honestly having her as this anti-hero with somewhat looser morals and concern for legality, I think she'd be a fun ally to see from time to time. Ofc she'd have to be more about corporate sabotage and less about murdering her coworkers.
@lexij2159
@lexij2159 3 года назад
honestly the whole oozla thing can be easily remedied since it's kind of implied she was more suggesting that the thug pay on her behalf, rather than straight up brutalize the poor dude. Having that bit be made more obvious and in general leaning in more to the whole sense that she's not used to being this criminal and is kind of bumbling her way through would have made her eventual good guy reveal far more easy to believe.

Angela didn't actually feed them to the swamp monsters on purpose. If I remember correctly, she forgot he wallet and asks the thugs "Will you... take care of this?" as in to pay for it, and they misinterpret it and throw the cashier into the wall instead of paying

If I can defend the Meteor Gun for a second, sure it does suck that you lose the crowd-clearing utility of the Lava Gun, but if you look past that, the Meteor Gun is honestly pretty sick. The magma chunks do really good damage to single targets, and when you consider how fast the gun fires, its total DPS ends up being one of the higher ones in the game. I'm never sad when the Lava Gun upgrades. Instead, I immediately visit Slim to slap on the lock-on mod and start treating the Meteor Gun like a better version of the Lancer. It's pretty great in my opinion.

The question of if it’s sad or not the gun upgraded is entirely dependent on if you’ve done the ultimate arena battle yet. The lava gun is perfect for several enemy types common in the arena but as the game goes on things get healthier which makes it less effective

The therminator was fine. It was one of the few items that required you to pay attention and be precise. It wasn't fun to use, but doing it correctly made you feel a sense of mastery. You knew the potential failure states that you were avoiding by doing it properly. Also, did anyone ACTUALLY complain about having to pay bolts to access new levels? I hear this brought up in a lot of these retrospective things, but I can't relate to it at all. To me, at the time, it just felt totally normal that I would have to spend my resources to get to the next place. And I really liked the ice planet yeti hellscape. It was a challenge to overcome. I get that it wasn't balanced, but it was hard and stomping that challenge was fun. I don't want games to shy away from things like this.

I only just discovered your channel, but you already got a subscribe out of me just for this retrospective alone! I’ve only recently begun playing through the entire R&C series, in an attempt to collect all the Platinum Trophies from the games before Rift Apart comes out. Sadly, despite me being a fan of the series since I came out back in the PS2, I had actually only really played and beaten the original, and the recent PS4 reboot. And I’m happy to say I’ve made it to Tools of Destruction currently, and enjoying the series with all of its ups and downs! This is also why I’ve utterly enjoyed hearing your retrospective on the first two games thus far. I love hearing about all the background information you’ve learned, and it does indeed make the game for more interesting and enjoyable for me to know these bits of information. I like knowing how much effort was put behind the scenes for such an amazing series. These great developers really deserve acknowledgement for their hard work! So thank you for taking the time and effort for these videos, and I’m looking forward to hearing more about the rest of the series that I’m also truly experiencing for the first time as well! Stay Gold! PS- I am NOT looking forward to getting Platinum on All 4 One and Full Frontal Assault, multiplayer trophies will be beyond annoying to find a way to get.

Excellent retrospective my friend. I appreciate the work you put into this video. Going commando was the first game i bought for my ps2 after getting it for my birthday when i was young. I have many great memories replaying this game over and over. Insomniac games made a life long fan out of out. Recently played the newested R&C game and absolutely loved it. Ill be diving into your up your arsenal video soon enough! Thank you!

You mentioning the fact that the swamp boss "forces you" to strafe brings back some memories. I had one of my childhood friends who absolutely could not figure out strafing and I had to tell him every time to just strafe to make the game way easier to play. And I vividly remember him struggling with the swamp boss Strafing is definitely one of the best additions the series got after the first game, playing the first game was pretty infuriating afterwards because of that Kudos for making these amazing retrospectives, incredible amount of effort must've gone into making these videos and it's so cool to learn all this stuff that I definitely wasn't paying attention to as a child as I barely knew english back then and haven't really given much thought to the story after the fact on later playthroughs either

58:26 I have no Idea how I remember this, but those fiery boots actually did make a combat on the psp game Ratchet and clank size matters. It was part of a armor combo that made fiery tracks when running that dealt damage!

What was so fun about these old games was that they were still challenging at times. Many games nowadays are babied downs and just feel like material grind simulators. I just hope rift apart isn't completely like that.

Man, this game was my childhood. I was late to the party as i was born a year before it's release. I remember looking through my step moms basket of games in 2009 and seeing this game. the first level had me hooked. This was the first story game i had ever played and for about 10 years it was the only ratchet and clank game i knew existed until they announced the newest one. I played every game during the pandemic a hundred time and to this day nothing comes close to going commando.

Btw, little tip. You don't have to perfectly place the ice in the water complex for the pipes. Just freeze it when it's on it's way back up and high enough to get into the pipe, get to the other side, and then thaw it out. The water will raise you up high enough before the shark even notices you (I've even been right in front of it before. I think the thawing delays the AI or something?) Yeah, it's counter-intuitive, but it saves you the headache (though may give you an anxiety attack. XD)

I’m really loving these retrospectives. I grew up playing ratchet and clank, and have been an all-time fan since the start. These in-depth videos about every part of the games and your take on certain things is really interesting to watch. I am curious if you are going to talk about every title in the franchise. Even if you cut out the seperate games like all 4 one, quest for booty, and dare i even say, q-force, or full frontal assault for others, it’ll still be a pretty extensive list. As of now, up your arsenal, deadlocked (yes im counting it, it was my favorite game at the time), tools of destruction and a crack in time are the next ones for these retrospectives, not including Into the nexus, because it moreso acted as a transition game for the next game, rifted apart because it hasn’t came out as of this comment, or the movie adapted video game, because not only is it an adaption of a movie of the first game, but also because that one just was really bad.

I actually found a hidden way to get into the insomniac measeum when I was in 7th grade. While messing around on the power lines on the level before you're kidnapped, you can let yourself hit the power node. You'll detatch from the rail and start falling. By pressing and holding jump, you can activate the helicopter pack to slow your fall and glide to a random building on a small piece of land (I think its right before the glass walled construction site) i thought I was just out of the map and ran to check it out thinking I'd fall through the level but you can walk through and under the sidewalk of the buolding where there 2 T4L guards blocking a teleporter. One triangle press later and I was in. Told my buddy Mark and he didn't believe me for 5 years until we were playing metroid prime one day and I turned it on to show him and he was blown away!

If you want to bypass the Thugs4Less boss fight all together (on PS2 anyway) you can use the upgraded spider bots with the acid mod to sneak into the area and attack the boss bot without triggering the fight. It's kinda slow and tedious but eventually the acid damage indicator flash will stop and that means he's out of health. Trigger the fight and after the animated cutscene the bot will immediately blow up.
