Ratchet & Clank is a series of action platformer and third-person shooter video games. The franchise was created and developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for PlayStation consoles, such as PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5, with the exclusion of Size Matters and Secret Agent Clank, which were developed by High Impact Games for the PlayStation Portable. The series is exclusive to Sony platforms and the intellectual property is owned by Sony Interactive Entertainment. An animated feature film adaptation was released on April 29, 2016.
By July 2006, Ratchet & Clank had sold 1.1 million copies and earned $31 million in the United States. Next Generation ranked it as the 49th highest-selling game launched for the PlayStation 2, Xbox or GameCube between January 2000 and July 2006 in that country. Combined sales of the Ratchet & Clank series reached 4 million units in the United States by July 2006. As of June 30, 2007, the game sold more than 3.7 million copies worldwide.

I really liked Ratchet's personality in the first game. He wasn't a pushover. And I'm glad they actually let him get revenge on Qwark and it didn't lead to some tired, worn-out moral about how revenge is wrong.

Well it's not that kind of game. But ultimately, the game is about space exploration and Racthet's maturity over the years aged well becoming more selfless, especially when every person he encounters actually are more of a survivalist than a hero. At least Ratchet for one is a thrill seeker.
@synysterdawn8913
@synysterdawn8913 10 месяцев назад
It still does present Ratchet’s pursuit of vengeance as wrong though, and Ratchet admits that himself in the game. Like he still gets to kick Quark’s ass, but it ultimately didn’t do anything for his development and was just a selfish waste of time.

@@synysterdawn8913 Why is it selfish? Why does Ratchet have an obligation to save the galaxy? Why can't other citizens get their asses of the couch and fight Drek then?
@synysterdawn8913
@synysterdawn8913 10 месяцев назад
@@imafreakinninja12 I mean, don't take it from me, Ratchet himself is the one who says he was being selfish and that the situation with Drek is far bigger than him and his personal vendettas. It wasn't until the latter 3rd of the game or so that he decides somebody needs to stop Drek and that he's the best guy for the job. And given the way the PS2 games satirized hyper consumerism and capitalism with Ratchet being the outsider able to cut through the bullshit with his genuine attitude, he was in the best position to stop Drek and took it upon himself once he pulled his head out of his ass. Even after beating the game, the helpdesk robot acknowledges that Ratchet is Gadgetron's most valued customer now that Drek is gone, so not even the most powerful corporation in that galaxy was willing to do anything about it because they still profited from Drek's actions. And not many other citizens had a little robot fall onto their planet with an infobot detailing Drek's plan who can also start their hand-built ship for them to go on a planet-hopping adventure. Plus Drek was being actively antagonistic towards them from the very start of the game to the point where he's going to personally destroy Veldin, so it's not like there isn't any personal shit there. Also, does it really need explaining why going on a personal revenge trip is selfish when you could be stopping a guy from destroying entire planets, who then also later reveals that he's doing it all purely for money? "WhY iS iT sElFiSh?" like c'mon dude, you ever heard of Spider-Man? Great power, great responsibility, all that jazz?

This is one of my favourite things about the original games. My biggest gripe with the reboot was that Ratchet wanted to be a hero from the start. He was already too pure and innocent. And that's another thing, I miss the adult jokes and innuendos that were *abundant* in the original trilogy. I love the plot, and the depth of the story and the character arcs, in A Crack in Time. But in the newer games, I just miss what made the original trilogy so special. I need more of Ratchet's sarcasm - and his original design.

It make sense with the first game that ratchet became more than happy to be a hero, but you could still see that selfish side of him in the older games. Deadlock come to mind with that. It's why the reboot is just bad, it take what made the first game good in term of character and remove it.

Combat was great in the first game. The two can't even be compared, really. Ratchet and clank is is one of the few games that was a masterpiece AND had a masterpiece sequel. A very rare thing. Both voice actors were great and suited the personality of ratchet. In the first game ratchet is just minding his business and who can blame him, he's just one guy, a mechanic at that trying to save the galaxy before becoming a reluctant hero simply because he can't afford to ignore the problem, to let somebody else deal with it... However only he can do the impossible and in the second game he's a little more cocky because of his training and previous experience and the voice actor (Johnny test guy 😂) does a perfect job of acting that out. One of my favourite games and they still hold up to this day

It's such a shame that such a unique and iconic franchise lost everything that made it special, opting to try and do the same thing as everyone else. Especially It's style, personality and context that communicated the character's role in the universe. It's commentary on selfishness and greed in a widespread future of people desensitized to the tyranny of corporate control. But DEFINITELY It's characters more than anything else, have been wrung completely dry of substance and... edge that makes sense for the world that they are meant to interact in and embody. I'm so sick of people defending the modern writing in the franchise when it's contributing to killing something I have cared about for years. Rift Apart and 2016 look objectively terrible and people are like "I mean it's still Ratchet so it's ok" these characters are becoming generic, cardboard archetypes when their initial concepts were anything BUT generic. "E for EVERYONE" doesn't mean "for toddlers." I'd say "for kids" but there are probably kids' shows that respect the intelligence of their audience more than modern Ratchet and Clank does. It's ironic that Ratchet and Clank has become the very thing it's made fun of for years: the peak of soulless corporate lies that are shiny on the outside but lack integrity beyond making money. Shameful. But you do an awesome job of showing what made this franchise so great, and what Insomniac needs to learn to ensure this franchise doesn't go the way of it's siblings, Jak and Sly. Thank you for making this. The more people that demand better, the better these games will be.

so *this* is why the reboot bothered me so much! having played the original at such an early age, i kinda passively absorbed the story and never had the deeper understanding of the writing. when the 2016 reboot came out, the whole thing felt kinda... flat? it puts the duo on much similar footing, and rather than the jaded smartass and naive emotionally driven characters we get in the original games, ratchet is this starry eyed underdog who's primary motivation is to prove himself and clank's the sense-talking straight man. in that sense, their writing is kinda inverted. much of their interactions in the original games' riffed off of their first characterisations - the kind of quips and digs that friends who forged a bond as the result of some shared hardship make. the reboot? they were kinda already a unit as soon as they met. they were already a team. working together. the reboot kinda just bins all that development.

I'd say ratchets attitude was more about being a mechanic dragged into combat, betrayal and being a forced hero all because clank wanted to find quark. I'd be annoyed at clank naivety too but its this dismissive attitude that then turns aggressive before accepting he has to save the galaxy that makes his personality great and makes the bond between ratchet and clank great, sure they got on each others nerves but in the end they never really hated each other

Of course Banjo and Kazooie were way more timid, while kazooie made some really dark jokes especially in tooie. if they had an argument with one another they would totally be in the same boat however they split up without that and you notice how their movesets relied on another especially when you first do it in witchy world

Ratchet Deadlocked Proved Ratchet didn't need Clank. However, it also proves Clank is a bot of his own. In Crack in time it even proves that Clank is powerful on his own right and simply joins Ratchet for the sake of being with him in an adventure. The thing is, they're partners and treat each other as equals. Overtime, Ratchet didn't need to rely on Clank explaininh Sci-fi stuff. And Clank can even be given an upgrade to fight just like Ratchet like in the 4 Player Games. They just stayed together for the sake of being together as best friends.

That one Canadian short from a few years ago was really god damn annoying to watch because the constant fighting gives me the idea that this is what writers THINK the original dynamic between Ratchet and Clank was. Just "Ratchet is a whiny bitch" without any of the context or nuance that justifies the actions and general jadedness Ratchet has in the original game. Like yeah, Clank was on the right side of the argument but that doesn't mean Ratchet isn't justified in being selfish after finding out that the world outside his "rock" sucks and then getting nearly killed because of Clank's naiveté. It also gives his character an edge that a lot of other leads don't seem to have, at least in scrimblos. He's a blowhard, he's a wiseass, he's impulsive, but not in a "Haha isn't he so funny???" way, more in a way that makes his character interesting and memorable.

If Ratchet was still interested in being friends with Clank, why did he just start walking away telling Clank “well good luck lol” before turning around acting like Clank walking away afterwards was silly? Unless Ratchet changes his mind shortly after walking off screen, then it comes across as a cheap way of eliciting an emotional response from the audience Otherwise GOATed game and fantastic video

@@megamillion5852 Huh, I guess that makes sense. Maybe that implication flew over younger me’s head and I still didn’t get it 🤷‍♂️

I just subbed as this video was really nice, and I would be interested to see a video like that about deadlocked, I loved that game as a child and when I replayed it recently I loved all of the undertones I couldn't catch as a child. It's what made ratchet game special and it's why I really dislike the 2016 remake of the first game, it took out all of the good parts of the story by making ratchet into his post ratchet 1 mentality.

yeah, just keep on making videos, that's better than a "2k subs special!!" that so many other youtubers make, and those kind of videos don't really add or do anything so just make a video like always and that'll be great

Unfortunately a lot of braindead fanboys get a jolly out of thinking they made a channel successful

Please do a video on Deadlocked. Apart from the original trilogy, it’s my favorite game of the series.

Good video. I enjoyed the different outlook compared to other channels. I'll drop you a sub and a like for that.

Also, this lack of dynamic in the 2016 reboot is what makes it suck

Ratchet only came back because he realized he would be stuck on that planet without his robotic ship starter.
