READ THIS BEFORE BASHING ME!!! What I present here is a super simplified explanation. None of it is actually accurate. It's just a quick way to conceptually begin thinking about these numbers. Helps the new-intermediate user get started.
I love how u try to be helpful to the masses but also have to explain urself to any negative feedback. I value ur opinions because they are unbiased and feel like my perspective. keep making videos and I always floss thanks to you!!
When i first started tuning my quad i've gone from 0.6 to 1.8 on D Weight because someone had those values on his video. My quad was shaking a lot, i tought my pids was bad untill i realized that my fingers were twitching a little and that caused my quad to wobble all the time, my motors were hot as hell and i couldn't find a good reason for that. Now i'm sticking with 1 D weight and 0.5 D Transition, it's just comes natural to fly acro with these numbers for me. But hey i've been waiting for a video like this and i clicked it immediatly when i saw it. Worth it, new subscriber for you mate. Keep it up!
Hey, just dropping by to say that I enjoy watching your style of informational videos and have been following them for a while. The way you share your knowledge and opinions... keep it up man!
Thanks! This is one of the best videos I have seen that explains rates in a logical way that makes sense. Two of the things that I think improved my flying was INCREASING yaw to be more sensitive than pitch/roll, and setting the D setpoint around 1. I never thought to do that for some reason, so it was a little counter-intuitive. Seems to have really improved how the quad feels to me though.
Was just about to head out when you posted this so had a tap around quickly in Betaflight to set another profile, it made alot more sense and nicer to fly with informed tweaks. Thanks mate.
it's very funny, I sometimes don't get your rationale for how you arrive at some of your conclusions, but I have to admit, your are correct much, much more than you aren't. This is another example of that formula ... Like other times, I have blindly decided to to give your suggestions a try and behold, your spot on again. So ... without further adoo, I have decided to give you max props!!! This little mod has done wonders with my overall feel and I can't begin to understand why, not that it matters. You are a genius my friend and I'm so glad that I chose to follow you and view every video you make. Thanks much ... dave (Hawki)
I notiiced that you set you Rate very high and super rate low, This is backwards, if you want smooth flying try setting your rate to below 1 like .93 and super rate to 83 which gives you a full stick rate of 1023 deg/sec but you still have mellow response with light stick movement. This is a trick I learned from Stingerswarm. Also adding Expo diminishes your resolution and can make coming out of fast flips and rolls harder to do without overshooting or undershooting the move. get rid of expo, with soft Rate settings you will never miss it. Great video bro.
yeah that was the old mentality. I used to do that. Try the more recent way that BF have done it if you're on BF. You might be surprised. I know I was...
This is very fascinating! I'm going to give this a shot right now. The Stingy video you're referring to, is it "Tuning with Stingerswarm"? I've had it bookmarked, will have to check it out. I hadn't ever thought of adding expo as a resolution diminisher, but I can totally see that by watching the curve when I adjust. I also agree about this video though, very helpful!
Always wondered why one of my quads flies more locked in than others, d set point was at 2.0 whilst others where at 1.0. Moved the others up:) Thankyou
Thanks for the reply. I know it takes a lot of time too.. Keep up the good work. I fly in up state NY ( Endicott). There is know one around me that's fly's so, lots of trail and error.Your videos are informative.
As Oggy said Beautiful explanation shared to my pages ive always set my RC Expo to 30 now i know where im going wrong EPIC also the setpoint weight and transition explanation has me plugging in my quads to change them round :)
Huge help!!!! Thanks!!!! I just started messing with betaflight and had no clue what half of that meant. I do know that pids from cleanflight will not equal the pids in betaflight. Lol.
Very good addition to your previous video :) I could notice that your "D Setpoint Weight" was slightly more higher back in the day! If i could lilke this video 10 times i would have done it for sure! Great stuff! Have a great week and keep on flossing!
ABMNS PRODUCTION ya it was higher back than but now the quad flies much better so I can smooth it out some. too high past 1 makes the quad feel nervous.
PauL TerL these ones are for M4 threads. My 4 yr old taranis plus has m3. I epoxied them on and love them. I think this gets them lower than screwing them on like they're supposed to be.(happy accident!). www.progressiverc.com/frsky-gimbal-sticks-m4.html
MrEbySan FPV I've gave a look at them. They appears pretty nice. What they add to the piloting? Maybe I'll get them, but if I can know if yhey will fit on me QX7. I hope they even can come in green. hehe
I'm going to give some a shot. I've had my thrumb slip off the stick before and i just never ordered them. Today is the day. Amazon has them in all different threads for $7
Cool video and you bring up some issues that I (as a pinch pilot) have experienced and noticed. Most radios aren't that friendly to us (pinch pilots) still there are a few that I have found to be better, Spektrum DX7 (smaller radio body and stick travel) and Multiplex (allows to rotate the gimbals to an angle and make it more comfortable). As for increasing rates I do the same, but I've been to try and set the radio or the FC to reduce reduce the detected gimbal travel. Still one last problem remains (at least for me) the tendency to bind gimbal movements, for example I know that when I do a fast throttle movement I tent to unintentionally add some yaw as well. And I think that is here that the usage of RC expo was used in the past, that and the fact the radio gimbals weren't' that great and had bad centering. Deadbad was a solution but depending on much is needed it may make the center area quite jerky.
ha, I thought I was uniquely weird with this sort of grip. Back when i flew only fixed wing, I used left stick with only thumb, and pinched on right stick. But quads require so much more resolution on the throttle axis that I transitioned to a hybrid pinch on the left side
I have quite a few quads but still am not good enough to tune myself. Some of my quads are good and some need some serious tuning (motors get way too warm) so I need to figure out how to tune asap before I smoke a motor. I find it a little frustrating when companies build BNF quads with stock BF tune in it. Thanks for doing this
Man I've been doing this for maybe 4yrs now and I still can't tune anything. The code has gotten so good you don't really need to anymore. With the next wave of code and the Helio boards coming out soon, I don't think anyone will tune anymore unless they're doing something really out of the ordinary
I'm afraid that I started flying with thumbs, and for some reason, pinching just gives me hand cramps. I'll see if I can move to a hybrid pinch (thumb on point of stick, finger on top side) once I get a bit better.
Awesome vid man, I have been asking around about pinch/thumb rates. Coming from a competitive gaming background where we use different sensitivity settings based on people who just use their wrist vs people that use their whole arm when moving the mouse. Would seem to make sense based on dexterity
btw - 1 correction. This is not pinching. Pinching is when the sticks is BETWEEN the thumb and the index finger. In your case - its some sort of hybrid, which is totally fine. But it's not exactly pinching.
At 3:46 i think its wrong. Of course rcexpo changes the center part. You clearly can see it. It changes the middle part too, of course, because it must connect to the end. Meaning of expo never changed and has always effected the center smoothness.
I know this is old... but I'm fairly new. I have all the same issues, especially with the qx7. For a pincher, the gimbals are in deep wells, and the sticks are long... I think if they weren't so recessed, and the sticks shorter, and the switches relocated, then it would be great for pinching, and you wouldn't feel like you have to travel a continent to get to full deflection. I like more of a flatter curve for yaw. It feels unorthodox based on videos and screenshots all over the internet, though.
Nothing wrong with setpoint weight below 1. It's all just preferences. I'd probably hate the way your quad flies and you'd probably think mine sucks.... but I also like 2". Lol To each their own. Anyway, I think of it like a fourth region of expo for the tiniest of movements very very close to center stick. Good video bro.
NotFastEnuf below 1 is good for certain things I think. just doesn't work for me and I gave my quad to others to fly and they said the same thing. feels super loose even though it flies well.
Agreed. One of those things ... particularly in my case ... is when you suck at small precision movements and your fc just takes what your fingers do as a suggestion. Hahaha. It really smooths me out after a double shot of espresso or a red bull. 😅 Keep up the good work man. You're the last guy left who I still look forward to releasing a new video.
Dont you think, your new QX7 controller with stiff springs has to do with how the rates and setpoints behave? And if you do adjust the setpoint and setpoint percentage, would you also recommend adjusting D gain or just leave them tune to 1 or 1.1? Great tutorial by the way appreciate the update on this topic. Im learning.
1. Install betaflight 3.2 2. Set Dterm lowpass to PT1 3. Disable gyro notch filter 1 4. Disable gyro notch filter 2 5. Disable D term Notch filter 6. Turn on Dynamic Filters 7. Go fly and check to make sure motors are not hot. 8. Profit!!!
@Paul It's when your craft is traveling through air that has already been through the props. Think about having the throttle low, falling, and then increasing the throttle to bring yourself back up. That causes the craft to travel through its own propwash, and it can cause a not-so-well-tuned craft to wobble a bit.
hey sorry I know I'm a pain in the ass..one more question if you could help me with..i have the boxed spectrum goggles and are they good I don't know what's really good looking for something with nice distance..i mean I have not tried mine far in flute like maybe 40yrds and are fine..basically what I'm asking is should I just stick with these..or get something I can trust on distance something else? I mean is just to make a buck for the companies or are they really that much better for instance clarity distance and reception..there is three good one that people mostly use first is the fat shark witch just about everyone has then there is aomway and also skyzone..thats the ones I'm looking at what you think?
Thanks for addressing these factors, not enough advance pilots talk about these factors enough. Having said that, I fell your explanation is still kinda ambiguous (for me) maybe you could try a different approach to explain rates? thanks again
well it's difficult to explain to someone that hasn't really played around with them at all. I'd say the best way to learn is to start from default and move numbers around one by one. Nothing else will teach you the understanding faster. It's just an annoying amount of work.
Darrel Martinez depending on your motors, a higher d setpoint weight can make your motors hotter. I've done a lot of testing, and essentially it makes your D kick in harder, which gives you the more locked in feel kabob talks about. This also can cause more heat though. Just gotta experiment
Add rcsmothing for all channels and it should not make motors too much hotter. I run 1.5 setpoint weight which is the 3.0 default and what i like and didn't really make motors any hotter than running 1.0. But when i went to 1.9 motors came down noticeably warm i put this down to dterm kicks from the fact that 3.1 onwards smoothing is only on pitch and roll.
+Mr Steele thank you FrSky. I use it because the radio module on my Plus is going bad. If the darn new crossfire module would actually make it to the shop I might be able to use it again.
I think this depends a great deal on your pinching "posture" and hand shape. I have super long fingers, and the qx7 is heaps more comfortable than the x9. The front panel switch layout is a pain in the arse though, gonna have to blank off the two outer 3-position switches to stop them hitting my knuckles on full deflection
so in some earlier video you mentioned that your 2inch bulds do not feel as locked as your 5 inch. i must say my brushed micro feels as locked in as my 5 inch. but i cannot do acro with it as the motors can not react as fast. what i discovered when i first started flying brushed micros is that the smaller crafts especially brushed need much higher P. i ended up with my P at 10 which now would be equal to 100 on Pitch and Roll. i moved on to 5"now but would be interested in building a 2inch quad as light as i can with a runcam split on top. like the flexrc micro frame that can hold a 20x20 and 30x30 at 45deg angle. would you try your 2inch on double the P gains?
Egi FPV that's exactly what in working on. smaller brushed builds. my theory is that it's the lighter weight that's more proportional to the prop size that gives that really locked in feel
Kabab FPV i build a brushed micro hex on 2s for winter :) can do flips and rolls in my living room but very hard to tune out bounceback and sucks outdoor but might be better with new bf. will try it maybe. used these motors on 2s www.google.no/amp/s/m.fasttech.com/p/amp/3363100 on a brushed hex micro frame with no topolate just main plate. but the problem with brushed motors is that they end up with your prop shaft breaking out the motor base on every crash. i cut the shaft by approximately 2mm but still made out of cheese. i can not recommended anything powered by a brushed motor as it is just to much maintenance.
I like my yaw with a really high Rc Rate 178 and Super Rate at 38 or so makes it completely linear in Yaw so i don't have to move my Yaw much for cross coordination maneuvers (;
awsome..i was just gonna ask you about the yaw..for a tighter inter touch..its like I have to go all the way up down and left to right and its a pain..so yea a tighter in for a faster response..thanks bro
So I'm a beginner.. and I've decided to only fly in acro mode now! WOW am I bad at it! It's so frustrating! That being said.. why does my roll left roll so much faster than my right roll? In beta flight and flying. The left roll is much much faster at rolling? I can't see how to make them both roll at the same speed. Any ideas on how to fix that?
Kabab FPV hey I wanted to let you know. I finally just recalibrated my QX7 and it fixed it! I couldn't believe it! Thank you for responding and trying to help me! Subscribed ✅
Eric Dunlap I only put it up as a response to Brian. I don't want that garbage to live on. I let it get a thousand more views than his video than dropped it.
yes, had a couple of conversions on race events regarding "Race Rates". The most people fly between 800 - 950 dec/s, but some like it more "direct", some other like to move the sticks more.
Anti-thumbite! I have never tried pinching, but it is true that pinchers like higher rates. Trying to do a slow roll with a pinchers taranis was a real chore for me, it just kept rolling over. I'll have to do a my first pinch video.
mooosestang I do somewhat half and half. I put my thumb on top and my index fingers on the sides, and that feels the most comfortable (same as Mr.Steele)
I've been told i have excellent control. I don't think pinching will do anything for me, it just doesn't feel natural, but it's worth trying just to make a video comparison.
Hey how are you?maybe you can help me with this issue I'm having..i have a spektrum transmitter and my reciever is a spektrum satellite..i would be flying for like a minute or two or sometimes even longer and all the sudden I lose connection with my quad and it drops to the ground..i go to give it throttle again and everything is fine till it drops or loses connection again..i just don't get it..
Peter Lech range issue most likely. all these shitty controllers have horrible range. look into the new TBS Crossfire. I won't run anything else when I get mine.
Peter Lech You have something else going on that's not a range issue, I fly spektrum and so do may other professional pilots, without any issues or drop outs. Check your Antennas, see if they un clipped from the ufl connector or have a bad connection, Also are you running a genuine spektrum receiver? if so which one? Also it sounds like your FC is resetting not a drop out and has nothing to do with your tx and rx. Obviously Kabab didn't even come close to answering your question, idk if it was he didn't want to or he just didn't know how to help you. But nothing is wrong with your system you do not need a TBS crossfire idk why he is even trying to push that on you rather than trying to help you, Come on kabab that is in no way how you help someone with a frustrating radio issue that can happen with any system.
yes you are so right sometimes the reciver lights goes out its the spektrum fpv serial racing reciver 3.3 autobind..and thank you so much you are the man..finally i get someone that can help me..I mean is it better to solider the reciver on the fc or just use the connector or it does not matter???
Peter Lech It doesn't matter but i like to use the connector if the FC has one, I fly kiss so i use the plugs just makes it easier and you know it will put out 3.3v for sure. If you are using the connector check for bad connection, Also what FC are you using? And do you have the Radio refresh rate set to 11ms? if its at 22ms sometimes it can cause it to reset. And you're welcome :)
Hyperlite 2307 2522kv for general use 5"-6", 2307 2722kv for light blade 5" race only lower AUW. I personally think they're the best motors available right now. Otherwise any of the Brother Hobby 2207 variants including the Hyperlite 2207 2522kv.
so i only fly freestyle, and my quad with everything like the hd cam and battery weighs 601g, do you think that the Hyperlite 2307 2522kv will carry the weight better than my current emaxx rs2205?? also will the higher kv drain my battery faster? and one more thing are the Hyperlite 2307 2522kv motors tourchey? i like the possibility of running any prop i want
Yes it will absolutely drain your battery faster and what's more it will make it sag more and in doing so lower the torque. It's stick with 2450kv or less.
@@Kabab Damn! Glad your able to do everything you do now. I sure would miss your channel. You explain the technical stuff better than anybody. Thanks for the education. 👍
You kinda mixed up RC Expo and RC Rate; at least in your explanation of them, not your understanding of them. RC Rate is the linearity of the stick acceleration across the whole mid range into where Super Rate starts having a higher effect. In other words, RC Rate tunes how quickly your rate ramps up as you push the stick farther and farther, until you hit your max degrees per second dictated by your Super Rate. Then RC Expo effects just the small movements made around center stick. The difficulty is that you can achieve very similar rate setup using a combination of any two of the three options. Like you can use a combination of just Super and RC rates and tune that to be very similar to a combination of just Super Rate and Expo. You could even use a combo of just RC Rate and Expo, but you would need to use some aggressive numbers to get the feel right. The most important number, at least in my opinion, is RC Rate. This is what will most affect your stick feel across most of the stick range. RC Rate is what you want to dial in first. Then use Super Rate to dial in just how fast you want to rotate at full stick. Then use Expo to get the sensitivity you want with tiny stick movements.
No worries. I read your description before commenting. I wasn't trying to correct you, ust wanted to add more info for people browsing the comments. And commenting on videos helps RU-vid's search algorithms. Just trying to help everyone out yo
