I am really happy that you are back! I missed your amazing quads and flying and I can't wait to see what you will create next! I would really love to get some of the motors because my friend just started out in fav a couple of months ago and he is ready to upgrade to a 5" quad but docent have the money to do so and if I could get the 1750kv set of motors I would build him up a quad and I am 100% certain that he would love it and use it every day! Thanks and I just also wanted to say as a 13 year old pilot who has been flying for just under a year now, you area HUGE inspiration to me fr building insane quads and trying out new things! Thanks!

Good to have you back Bob. I'm interested in the lower kv motors to build a fast 7 inch to chase drag racers. I can keep up with a 5 inch, but I have to dive the starting line, it's incredible the acceleration those monsters have. I'm trying to build a quad that has, a little more punch, and a higher top speed, I believe their hitting 100-150 in the 1/8 miles. My goal is to take off a hair after they take off, but beat them to the end to get a shot from the front of the finish. I know it's going to have to be really fast to accomplish this. I also would like to help test anything you would want built with a set, and give feedback. I been around for about 4 years, (Papadoc fpv before the name change) glad to have you back.

I am so glad to see you come back, as an engineer your videos just resonate with me and I cant get enough of them. I can't believe you've got Smoox 1750kv motors! That is the perfect motor for me, from my testing I have found that I prefer lower kv for the way I fly, 1700kv felt too extreme, 1900kv felt too much and 1750kv felt right on the money, it gave a little more low end throttle control over 1700kv whilst still giving me very good feeling and proximity precision. The smoox motor is the best one I have tested so far but the high kv makes it unsuitable, I can fly it but I just miss that grunt of the low kv, so to see that motor at 1750kv is perfection. I would obviously like to win them, I cant say I would do anything fancy with them but they would absolutely be going on a 5" and I can say from my testing they will become my main quads motors until I break them and cant replace them. I would even offer to buy them off you. PS. The Sonicare is SUCH a good looking quad!

interesting; I am in the process of building a 450 "Dead Cat" from the old days, with modern equipment, for the same extended flight reasoning, sorta. My goal was to chase a fixed wing from takeoff to landing, a 2-3 LiPo affair with my 5" fleet. I plan on Molicel 21700's in a 4s2p (and up) config, as those cells have rejuvenated all of my fixed-wing fleet. Looking forward to seeing more/learning more. Thanks!

Left off playing with 10inch and went to 6s on 3115 and 640kv motors for a cruiser. Goal was to rebuild with 8s ESCs to make use of plentiful 4s packs to run in series to put me back around a 900kv range for performance. 900-1050kv on 6s with a 10inch was a rocketship but I ran into tuning issues I could not fully tune out, probably filtering issues. At 640kv I was locked in and immediately happy. Went back to playing with the cars instead of FPV after starting to play with something stupid large.

Welcome back bob! Out of curiosity... Have you experimented with some kind of wing shape for providing more sustained thrust for your go pro carrying use cases? Especially since you're moving that fast and our quads are just flying bricks .. I'm curious if the increased surface area = more friction and will slow it down or the lift provided will actually make it more efficient.. Either way, good to have you back!

I fly 6-15+ batteries a day on the 2.5" whoop platform for work and i'm always pushing them to be better and more stable. I've built multiple cinelogs, Qav-pro 2.5's and snapshots. I would love to test the octo 2" and compare it to the existing platforms I currently use daily. This sounds like it could be perfect for the types of work I am currently doing. Side note I just thought of. Being able to slow down even more for indoor would help a ton in lowlight since you don't have to worry about shutter angle vs frame rate as much.

On wings I've noticed the taller stators put out more top end speed but are less efficient , throw some of HQ 8x5 biblades on your 3106.5 and you should get great speed/efficiency.... You always get more efficient on larger props but you'll lose some performance(slower roll/pitch rates) , I would go for a 1800-3300mah 6s on 8" depending on flying style needed

Took a tolerance break from fpv as well. Really cool experiments with the X8. Would like to see a toothpick scale version for the heck of it. Currently running 5s with 2150 kv motors but would be interested in building a semi lightweight 6 inch with those 1880kv motors. I think I would get good efficiency out of them running biblades and can achieve higher cruising speeds. Only thing is I only have 1550 mah 5s lipos so flight time would be around 5-6 minutes. Need to find a lightweight 6inch frame that is still durable enough for high stress flying.

The plus config at the end looks very cool and promising! I was even thinking on smaller props (and motors) for rolling since whoops don't need that much agility. Then, get the true performance from the larger props front and back. It would also make it more compact for smaller gaps (lateral), an less noisy since props wouldn't overlap as much

well as much as id love the bigger motors i dont fly anything but micros being a cancer survivor twice over I was left with a brain tumor and a seizure disorder and unable to work so I now live on a very small fixed income and in all honesty just cant afford to fly bigger quads no more not that i dont wanna its i really cant i have a hard enough time keeping my 3 in and smaller quads in the air. the 2 inch octo would definitely be up my alley as i have nothing but time and i love to tinker and work my brain out. so if ya ever need any help in the micro,whoop,toothpick,twig class stuff id be 100% willing and very thankful to do what ever i could to help. thanks for all you do Bob i have been following your channel for years now the naz32 board is how i found you and have been hooked ever since cause you go above and beyond to try to change the game as we know it and i truly admire you for that so again thank you Bob for all you do

nice to see another video. its a shame that the coaxil effect slows them down, cause it looks like a great platform if only it were faster

I have been working on an entirely 3d printed tpu material frame and looking for a motor that would give me better efficiency but still have the robust power I need to make it perfect for freestyle. It's running a mamba 75 amp race esc and a mamba mk2 fc. It's currently running dys motors but I know there is more room for improvement. Thanks kabab for everything you do in the fpv community. Your work really makes me think about what kind of innovations and improvements I can come up with to contribute to the community. 🤟

Tpu frame is gonna be really difficult because tpu is really heavy/dense. It's also a bit elastic so it'll wobble a fair bit. Maybe if it's really small and light?

My FPV sweet tooth has been hurting, where ya been doc? Lol. Miss your in depth looks at…..everything quad. I too love experimenting with motors and frames, (on disability, so I can fly everyday) but I have to tell you, I’m down to winding my motors that are still alive. Yes, even my 2 and 3 inch tiny motors , try that, fpv’rs! Ok, it doesn’t always work 🤷🏽‍♂️

With everything getting a little sketchy with RMID and all that. I’m wanting to build me a a sub 250 5” and those motors would get put to use on that. I love the innovativeness. You should get with Derek over at KinFPV. He’s got a wonderful brain too. Nice video man. Keep up the good work. Glad ur back!

I understand the logic behind different size/pitch props top/bottom on coaxial setups, but what's the actual train of thought for using different kv motors? Having a higher kv motor on the bottom surely doesn't 'make' the bottom prop actually spin faster than the top, because it's still the FC that's going to spin each motor exactly how fast it wants to (regardless of kv). If the FC does in fact end up telling the bottom motors to spin faster, then using a higher kv motor just reduces the throttle/pwm values sent to those bottom motors compared to the top, right? Is the thinking that in this situation a higher kv motor is more efficient operating at a comparatively lower throttle/pwm value than a lower kv motor would given an otherwise identical setup?

@Kabab 2 года назад
The FC doesn't actually know what motor is what kv. There will always be an rpm difference between the top and bottom. You really don't need to have different kv motors however. You can do it in software, the command just isn't really clear at the moment. Overall, without the FC involved, you want an 8-12% difference in rpm between the top/bottom for somewhat more efficient operation. We're talking about maybe 10-15% more efficient. Not really much but also not insignificant. This can be completely ignored and it doesn't matter but what's more important here is that changing props on top/bottom doesn't really do anything to help either. What does help is having a light craft and turning off the top or bottom but that sort of doesn't make sense to do. If this worked out, I actually had plans to create air brakes of sorts. Spin the top props backwards to slow down the craft without changing altitude....it would be a bit complicated but would actually work to some degree.

@@Kabab Ah I think I get it - my confusion was thinking about flat setups where the FC can (effectively) determine how much thrust it's producing from each motor because there is only one motor at the end of each axis. With a coax setup, the FC has no way (ignoring any sort of telemetry) to determine how much thrust is being produced from top vs bottom motor on any particular axis, so will send very generally similar PWM values to both (assuming a flat hover scenario with no yaw). So by using a higher kv motor on the bottom, we ensure that we actually get the 8-12% higher rpm on the bottom even though the FC can't detect the lower efficiency/thrust of the bottom motor & react appropriately by explicitly sending higher pwm values to the bottom motor? I've been flying Arducopter Y6 for years, but never really given too much thought to the whole subject of top/bottom wrt props/kv. I honestly build them because I like how they look 🤷

nice video and welcome back. I am not sure what level of attraction is required to receive a set of your give-away motors. My interest is smooth flying with a reduced noise level. I am trying to accomplish this with non linear filtering. The current outcome is promising.

Hi Bob, great to see you posting again! Interesting findings as always! I'm a 15 yo fpv pilot and I have been working on a new design of an ultra lightweight and low drag 6" drone to keep up with full scale aircraft. So far I have been flying my fr7 long range drone, but it tops out at around 80 witch isn't quite enough to keep up with some of the aircraft I want to chase. Would love to test out a set of those motors on the frame!

I'm building a 7inch x8 - I'm still finding it unclear what kv differential for the top and bottom. You said the 9% difference is best for efficiency but 1450 and 1250kv is a 16% difference. Which is best?
@Kabab
@Kabab Год назад
Realistically the difference between 9% and 16% is undetectable. If you want to have a difference, aim for that general range and you can expect minor improvements.
