Ratty Muscle Cars - THoM Extra

Austin Griggs founded Ratty Muscle Cars on the premise that old cars, regardless of their condition, need to be driven - and we agree. Get them rolling, get an engine between the frame rails, fire those suckers up and drive the snot out of them! In this episode of THoM Extra we head back to Alabama to gain a few more insights from the man himself.

I love these cars. Daily driving old-school muscle is the way to go.

Invincible Extremes Muscle Cars Garage haha yeah, you’d know. I’ve seen lots of your videos numerous times... I still can’t believe you hooked a car hauler to the Firebird in the dead of winter like you did, that’s just insane! But you make it fun, just like this fella! Barrett Jackson and Mecum ruined the classic car market. Everybody thinks they have a 30-40k car nowadays!

I absolutely LOVE that the whole ratty muscle thing took off. My 73 Charger isn't what I call ratty, but it ain't perfectly restored either. But the best thing about people like this is they simply appreciate an old muscle car being driven like a normal car, which is my goal!

I love this guy's attitude. I think this goes for any car really, not just old muscle cars. Cars should be driven around like they were designed to do.

Love this. Lost count of how many people have called by 70 Maverick with a 351W perfect when she's two toned and needs a lot of body work. I love her and apparently other people do as well. Awesome vid

Your car is awesome. I'm from Belgium and here we have a lot of regulations for cars. I love the look of your car. Regulations take the soul of a car away. When you drive your car and it is safe to drive, go for it. I like the look and the appearance of ratty muscle cars. Greetings from Belgium.

Mr. Hoekx, I am pleased to hear of your desire to freely own and operate a classic car for your self,.....I know first hand the roadblocks (laws) can and most certainly have imposed in your area........ All I can say is, "Keep one Foot in the Gutter, and one Foot in the Gole" my friend.... "If I ever find myself in Belgium,.... I will look you up Dirk." Greetings from HFD. TEJAS U.S.A.

I love straightish ratty muscle. That's what most of them looked like in the 80's and 90's, and people drove them like any other car. The ratty 3rd gen Camaros you see today were ratty 1st and 2nd gens when I was growing up.

Totally agree with you man, more people need to stop worrying what the Barret Jackson show has to say about perfectly restored cars, get out there and enjoy what you have. Dents, scratches, faded paint and all. It shows your car had a life, and its so much more interesting. Also like you said, the average person dosent have thousands and thousands of extra dollars for a 10 point, bottom up full restoration. just work with what you've got, do what you can, and enjoy it.

It's a great idea except here in Australia if your car looks ratty the cops will pull you over and go through the car looking for one fault and if something like the windshield washers or the horn doesn't work they will put you off the road with a work order and then your car has to pass a full inspection to get it back on the road!!... So we have to make them look half decent to avoid the heat!

I was looking for parts for my 1986 GT Mustang I used to drive thru the snow (until I went to move the seat one day and found 2 of its four bolts no longer had floorpan to attach to) when I found my 1968 4-4-2. Its white with black vinyl top and bumble bee front stripe, so maybe that's why it doesn't get the attention on the road this yellow car gets. A few times at car shows, it gets little respect for its cracked windshield and rust...until I explain, it has a manual valve body THM400 with the switch pitch torque converter. I can leave it in 3rd and pull away from a dead stop with 3:1 rear gears because of the variable duration lifters in the 455 and enjoy 15 mpg with no overdrive. Or I can switch from the 1900 RPM stall speed to the 3600 RPM with a push of the button on the Hurst ratchet shifter and do 0-60mph as fast as a ZR1 Corvette (the 405 hp, not the 375). The steering box is converted to 2.5 turns lock to lock, and it has the old style power brakes that sent you thru the windshield in 1969. The fuel pump (which can pre-prime the carb after sitting a long time and act as anti-theft device) runs thru the oil pressure gauge, so if OP drops it stops feeding the regulated Q jet in order to save the engine. And I paid a mere $4500 for it because the first two buyers ticked off the seller, who gave me all his manuals and his G force meter he used to tune it since he was going into electric cars and just had to take me for a ride in one before we even looked at the 4-4-2. THEN people get it. At one car show, two folks were laughing at it, until I told the story...and then I was asked to stick around to the end of the show, and those two presented me with the "busted knuckle" award. As Mike always points out...the car is only half the story. the rest of the story, is the story.

@@WyoCutlass71 Thank you, and one day I will. Before this internet thingie, I had gotten a junkyard 1969 GTO from a buddy I helped out (abusive father, family secrets, long story) in "payment". He had put in a 326/buick 2 speed, and I found an old gas station turned into a repair shop with a four door, 1971 Pontiac Lemans sitting dead in the back. For $425, he delivered it the next week when he sent an empty flatbed out my way. I pulled the dashboard out and sold that off for $400, took the 2bl 400/THM400/limited slip 10 bolt and the air conditioning (my GTO had been from NV) and gave the rest of the carcass away to someone who needed the windshield. I chopsawed the factory exhaust manifolds front to back and ported them since I didn't have the cashola for headers, worked the #96 heads just in time to find some cheap 6X heads, did a cheap trans kit on the THM400 so it shifted about as sharp as it would in a solid lifter chevy, rebuilt a $5 Q jet, wished to find an overdrive off some motorhome (never did) redid the floors with leftover carpet and sound deadener used for HVAC (cheaper even today than DynoMat, hit up your local Home Despot) painted it with rustoleum and went on with whatever parts came up in newspaper classified ads and swap meets. Don't know what it made for power, but it was enough to spin the 15" rally rims I got off a mid 1980's Formula Firebird, and it was a GTO not a hand me down minivan, so that was enough. Not pretty at all (so only one photo of it ever) but now that's popular, go figure :)
