After watching/listening to this interview I want to watch PS again. Every frame is a painting that speaks volumes. I wish Ravivarman holds an exhibition with PS stills. Thanks BR for letting Ravivarman do most of the talking with your amazing listening skills.

Brilliant interview! Yea, more like masterclass. As a performing artist, I have interacted very closely with visual artists, had some amazing conversations with them on lighting and audience. Hearing Ravi Varman speak about his work each time is such a pleasure. Tamil film industry technicians are simple brilliant; and this man will definitely be regarded as a genius in Indian cinema.

Brilliant conversation. I was a bit skeptical about watching it when I saw the one hour length, but this is well worth it's time. BR taking the back seat and letting Ravi Varman pick the scenes and talk about them was a master stroke. Understanding an artist's craft through his own narration is such a pleasure. I am sure, I will be watching the film again, thanks to this conversation. Expecting such a mastercalss conversation with the writers too.

Observation, Observation and Observation. Witnessing the events rather than capturing it, extends the lifetime of every frame we record and Ravi Varman seems like Aditha Karikalan for me in having the rage to push the boundaries. The fact that they managed to capture an average of 2 min. of runtime everyday, makes me wonder the kind of work that Ravi Varman and Mani Ratnam brought into the set. And you are not alone Baradwaj sir! It took me a while to get used to AK and VT !

Bro i agree technical department is the best work in ps but storytelling is the primary barrier one has to cross to appreciate artistic brilliance which is where it wobbled, nonetheless overall it is a decent dualogy

@@krishnasimhavemulapalli7124 I just don't get what is wrong with the storytelling..... The storytelling especially the character interactions are the best part of the duology

@@geetadhumane5793 there were some beautiful moments especially in part 2,that is why I liked part2 but from a neutral audience perspective like me i felt , apart those moments remaining scenes felt flat and that climax didn't help..my best scene is nambi telling AK that Ps is alive...what an actor vikram is!

@@krishnasimhavemulapalli7124 okay so u are on the other side of the Climax debate.I get that.. It's an hard pill to swallow. For me the climax worked like a charm, I am not exaggerating when I say that I teared up when I saw my favorite part from any novel ever on the big screen (Jayam Ravi crushing it with his acting❤.. Also the Yaanai Paghan scene with PS anthem.. Giving some serious goosebumps) I'll explain the POV.. I read the books when I was like 12 yrs old, but before reading them I knew the OG history and the entire Madhurantakan thing. So even at that time I was a bit sceptical abt the Sendhan twist. The only reason it worked for me was because of Kalki's God tier writing, but I always had the thought that no one else, literally no one else other than Kalki can convince that a person who has spent his whole life selling flowers, who has 0 knowledge of Rajniti and battle experience, became the King of the Chozha empire (GOT season 8 literally proved it with their ending). But still the Pattabhishekam remains my favorite thing ever, and the reason being Arunmozhi, him sacrificing the crown, doing the Thiaga Sigaram.. That is such a beautiful character moment that Kalki has made.. You can't possibly seperate that moment from Raja Raja Chozha's other great achievements. It didn't matter to me who became the king, only thing that mattered was PS gave up the crown.. Which was shown very well in the film.. (Ya they could have done it even more better.. They could have added 10 more minutes after the war as Thanjavur prepares for the Corronation when Arunmozhi and Vanathi have their proposal scene from the book where he confides in her his real ambitions of expanding the empire.. And give us a subtle hint of what's in his mind.. That he is fed up with the bloody fight for the throne, and he just doesn't want it.. We get some of that during VD's trial with all those close ups. But it would have worked even better.. Lot better if we had it sink in a bit more) But I get why people can get disappointed with the Climax... Only way I can defend Mani Sir here is by saying that no director in the world could have made that plot twist work in a film... It might be made to work in a web series (completely different discussion).. But never ina movie.. No matter how many parts you make.. There are some liberties a book gives u.. That a film never does

Interesting interview as expected again from BR and Ravivarman! As I commented in the production related interview, here also I feel sorry for the technician's work since it didn't work well in the overall muddled storytelling. There were flashes of brilliance of course, but it reminded more of MR's older movies like Ravanan (Chola fort backlit scene of AK), Iruvar (Prakashraj and Trisha scene in PS2), Thalapathy and his older movies (Trisha and Aishwarya Rai scene in steps) etc. MR's stronghold is making his movies different from his old ones, but I don't know why he preferred going back to his older best works!! In PS2 Aga Naga sequence, AK in horse, AK sitting under the statue, his funeral procession were the standouts for me and the young AK love portions were the modern MR interpretation I would have wanted in the whole movie!! Ravi varman talks about how dead AK is like Alexander. I felt that grief of their young prince dead and his eldest son killed didn't even pass to the audience as they hurry up to the court scene; even Sundara Chola didn't feel the overwhelming grief that AK is dead; this was jarring because the same King was shown to be aghast when he hears PS is dead in storm earlier in the movie🤡 War scenes were the biggest letdowns and unwanted pieces of video in both the movies. We didn't want to see them in a novel like this as well. Comparing these below par sequences to Kurosawa's Ran brought out a chuckle from me. One interesting technique that MR could have actually used (or thought of similar interesting ways may be) is the Padmavat scene of Alaudin fighting the Mongols and brings the head of the chieftain from the war dust- it's not a very important scene, but still the war is shown in a very intense and compelling manner; this scene was also very short and not painfully long as the war sequences in PS. There is no need to celebrate mediocre attempts such as this IMO

Maniratnam deliberately did that cause he didn't want anyone saying he copied Rajamouli. So he wanted to make the war sequences in a unique way and he did.

@@krishnasimhavemulapalli7124 Can't agree more. The whole movie's (including 2 parts) war sequence is completely a liability to the film (except PS 2 climax) . And they could have kept the Novel's climax. If they had done that, it would have been received well by the audience

So okay I am not trying to defend the war sequences or anything.. They were sterile and no one can change that fact... But after rewatching PS2 recently I noticed some brilliant story telling in the final war sequence (which made me feel that a little bit more work could have made them freaking amazing.) So the Sri Lanka battle when Arunmozhi's forces were landing on the shore... They were attacked by the Lankan army who were hiding in the dense forests... The arrows were coming but the soldiers weren't visible... We get a couple of Closeups of Arunmozhi keenly observing this... Skip to the battle of PS2, Arunmozhi uses the same tactics against the Rashtrakuta forces and marches only after demolishing their first line of defence.. Which is brilliant storytelling as we see Arunmozhi as the brilliant strategist which he would become in the future... There is also the use of the Elephants under Malaymaan's command.. As the Chozhas were notable users of elephants in combat.. They used to ship thousands of elephants to battle.. So a little historical touch... The stunts performed in the movie all across are fantastic and really highly dangerous.. But the sad part they weren't filmed the way they were supposed to.... The staging was great...the presentation.. Not so much

He did many unique framings in PS and I heard that the shoot was so hectic that they were not allowing for many retakes even for necessary corrections technically. And while watching the movie, mainly second part, I noticed many shots were losing their quality (sharpness). But even though, it has to appreciate Ravi sir for finding uniqueness and loving the abnormal disabilities in some shots as beautiful. It is great. I sensed that too while watching movie because I have done that decision making in my small works too and which got criticised in both ways. which is fun to hear. And I think his understanding on shooting in indie project in early times made him much more stronger to make it happen faster too.

the cinematography, color palatte, grading were extra-ordinary but I felt it was not organic.. The best shot in PS1 was VTs reaction when Nandhini was trying to get his desire of owning vanar clan's own land, climax shot division how the news of ArunMozhi's death travel across Thanjai and Kanji, interval sequence of PS2... ANDDDD & ANOTHER BUTTTT i felt he deliberately kept sun striking the faces of the main characters in many places... for eg., in PS1 when VT talks with Nandhini (nandhini ya beautiful la kamikuren nu sun light Aish mela mattum padra maari irukum), in Budhha Viharam same applies to ArunMozhi, ArunMozhi makkal kuda kalandhu nadakura maari irundhaalum ArunMozhi ya highlight panra maari irukum ithelam ethuku.. I am not comparing with Bahubali, but athula cinematography felt organic than PS1&2... ithu poga war scenes were shot in a very lame manner and particularly not to resemble SSR's picturization + ArunMozhi as yanai paagan disguise, enaku adha vida andha thundu vilundha odane the reaction from Prabhu, solidiers were all with less energy (Raja Rajan was alive nu oru sandhosame irukaadhu) + andha crowning scene in PS2 ppl who will standing giving kumbidu was literally joke + karthi under the skin of tiger escaping out of secret room in Kadambur maligai of PS2 + Oomai Rani jumping all over the palace at ease at that very old age... ithelam enna ya shotu... indha 1hr la ithelam ketkuradhila ya Baradwaj Rangan avargaleeeyyy

One of the few technicians on PS crew who did hands down a brilliant job irrespective of my criticisms for the movie. Ravi Varman, Eka & actors- Brilliant job Thota dharani - The climax AK getting killed, the hunted animals in the chamber was a joke!! Brought one outside the movie from such an intense scene. Could have been any art designer. Expected better from this legend. Stunt choreographer- consistently bad across all fights across both parts. It didn't have to be great but it surely could have been not bad. VFX - you could see all the vfx especially ps2. The thiruneer Pattai on vikram' s forehead in a crucial scene with all the sitrarasu was fully distracting. They could have left him bare foreheaded itself without correcting it with vfx. Editor - the fight scenes. Bad. Ar Rahman - no I dint want just the "en thamigh vaazhga vaazhga" line alone playing out of nowhere incoherently during the coronation scene. I wanted the song there for ps and not for Aditya karikaalan in the first 10 mins of the film when he just had 2 other songs just the minute before that !!! Mani rathnam- Pls release the scenes you have removed from the film while releasing on OTT. Didn't get to see one shot from the veera raja veera lyric video between sobitha and ravi on the ship.
