I love(d) Ravi’s closeness with God to be able to articulate these complexities with such simplification. My dad went through the whole an omni God would not allow such suffering - I at a young age only had the free will argument. But I would pray to God whatever it takes... well in 2000 my dad was stricken with a terminal cancer diagnosis (March) which would not have been enough to convince him. But in April my brother was killed in an auto accident. By the time my dad died in Aug I believe he had chosen Jesus/God. Certainly not the path I would have hoped for, but will be grateful one fine day when we are all together in His kingdom.

Many people have allowed themselves to be martyred in SERVICE to a greater good (saving lives for instance). Also, his and your claim that free will is the highest virtue, which is demonstrably true, but is a very America way of viewing the world. Given that your god sets the rules, designs our brains to value or not value things, he could easily have configured us to value security and love, and not to care about free will whatsoever. To give us free will then murder us for using it, knowing already HOW we would use it is the action of a madman.

​ @Mat Broomfield Hey, so in this video the speaker is saying that the highest virtue is love(he uses Oscar Wilde as an example), not free will. The reason it ties into free will is because it's impossible to have the love we all want without also giving us humans complete, freedom of the will. I don't really see it as God giving us free will and using it as an excuse to murder whoever he chooses. In my perspective(I'm christian), our values aren't randomly created. The bible states that humans are created in the image of God. So that means we hold love as the highest virtue simply because God does. From how I see it, humans have a natural reverence to whoever created them(like how children obey/respect their parents that brought them into the world). That should be the natural state of the world if nobody went against it. Just imagine if there was actually an almighty God, the goal if nobody misused their free will is: humans giving God the praise he deserves, simultaneously, a world without pain. We're able to enjoy the highest virtue, love, so that means we also have free will. But in this world there is evil that sees to use this free will as a good opportunity to deceive/destroy humans, leading to all the unfair pain in this world (like the innocent man referenced in the beginning of this video). What if the gun was placed in your hand by god, who knows you will pull the trigger. To not pull the trigger would be to prove god wrong(impossible). To pull the trigger is to go with gods plan. How is either free will?

@@konroh2 The difference is, i went out and bought my gun. I drove to a place that i was able to shoot it at. I was trained in the potential danger before i ever owned it. Never at any point did someone leave a gun laying around for me to pick up, only to then have someone else come by and tell me "ya go ahead and pull the trigger". My decision to shoot my own gun was not influenced by anyone. The decision to eat the apple, was heavily influenced by god and by satan. God made the decision for them by placing the tree in the garden, and by letting satan in to trick them.

@@Vaioplayer88 Let's examine that. Surely you're familiar with the idea of giving someone a choice. Paramount in the narrative is that God gave them a choice. Were they capable of obedience? Did Satan force their hand? At any moment we all know that we have the choice between good and evil. At no time can we say we don't freely choose evil. Are you saying it would be better not to give them a choice? With our own children, we want them to choose the right thing, and we teach them to independently do so. We stop holding their hands and let them cross the street themselves. This is the loving thing to do, to give them the choice to freely choose the good.

@@konroh2 But also as parents, we dont leave guns laying around to see what our children will do. We stop holding our children's hands only after we feel that we have taught them enough. The difference between how you handle your child(assuming you have kids), and how the situation from the bible plays out to me, is that god knew satan would be there. You would never allow your child to come in contact with a drug dealer as a test to see if they would try drugs. Now i would understand if your child goes off somewhere and tries drugs and you find out. But to set up a situation where you placed drugs on a table, and allowed a drug dealer into your home to trick your kid(who starts off saying "mom/dad told me not to"), then you get pissed because your kids were tricked, makes you(not YOU, but you get it) a bad parent. The worst part is you knew all along that that was how it was going to play out in the first place. I understand the story and i understand what its supposed to present in the bible, i just dont agree with it being an example of true free will or love for that matter.
