I often hear in Maggie's comment section that how she's better than Chris, Jeremy or every other reviewer. I won't deny that statement because common It’s her. I do though want to point out there is no need for comparison. They're all doing this because of their passion for cinema, Jeremy is a funny man, Chris Stuckmann does more accessible reviews, more terse to garner more audience, Maggie on other hand is more egregious in her reviews, and she knows how to structure her reviews in apotheosis fashion. She does have this no bullshit policy on her channel which is why she stands out from the rest, but that doesn't mean all those other reviewers are beneath her, I'm pretty sure she respects them. It’s up to you people, what you want to watch, you want to be entertained have a good time watching Jeremy or you want to be challenged (in case Maggie) be questioned what you just watched, revisit that particular piece and discover something new, she's a fine wine. It’s all art people, that's why we're here, Enjoy. Reply if you agree with me lovely Maggie :)
Thanks for the comment! To be honest I try not to pay attention to other reviewers because I don't want to be influenced by anyone currently. So I don't know either reviewer very well at all. But yes, I agree. Each reviewer has a different taste and you just gotta watch what you prefer. It's all opinion anyway. haha :)
Thanks for replying. You can't be influenced by anyone Maggie you have a very strong personality so it's totally ok to look at other people's works. Movie people get inspired from each other all the time, nothing wrong with that. Of course in this case they should be inspired by you, I remember in one of your old videos Chris actually commented saying he love your work, he must've been reverse stuckmannized by you (it's a internal joke among his fans). It's all opinion right about that. Can't wait for you to hit million subscribers, but never stop talking to us like they have :) love you :)
They are just not doing the same job. I watch their reviews from time to time and from what I have seen Stuckman is not a critic at all. He doesn't think enough in general and/or before giving his judgment hence his reviews being quite poor, his arguments are often basic, irrelevant or to scarce. He hasn't developped his thoughts enough in order to be a "genius" as a critic. To me all critics should be able to make it seem like he/she has worked on it at a thesis level with a very large approach on the subject. Stuckman often focuses on details and lacks a general vision. He his not a critic. He is just like a cinema school student with a lot of passion but nothing more. From the few vids I have seen from Jahns, he seems to have more potential, a better basis, then he adapts to a certain public and it is ok. Again from what I have seen. Of course teenagers need something Stuckman's style before upgrading to Maggie's work, I just wish he was more pertinent and benevolently sow the seeds of exigence in the viewers'minds. But he doesn't and often supports bland blockbusters and so. They don't need someone to praise them or saying they are ok. They need criticism to get better, to put real genius artists being the cameras, to force the studios to take risks instead of applying formulas. The only real author Disney hired for their blockbusters is Waititi (special mainly for his humor, not the biggest risk). Edgar Wright on Antman? Yes but no let's fire him. Gareth Evans is a genius for filming action scenes and works with almost no script or basic ones? Perfect! But let's hire the Russo brothers again instead. Fuck! Just compare the fight scene in the staircase during Bucky's rescue in Civil War to any fight scene in the Raid and check out which choregraphy was sublimed and which one was spoiled. Disney's productions are mostly garbage and Stuckman doesn't say shit about it : "This one was perfect! This one was good! This one not that much but still go see it it's fun!". The last decade was a nightmare in terms of creation. One of the worst decades of cinema for most critics but he welcomed it with a smile. A real critic would point it out and try to have an influence on his viewers so they expect more from Disney and Co in the future, so the next Spielbergs or Bayonas can express themselves and make extraordinary movies! It is better for cinema and for people. Movies and video games are the best way to learn to think, to analyse and understand the world, others and yourself, to learn criticism, to learn to open yourself to new things etc etc etc because everyone loves to watch movies and play games. Imo teenagers should receive classes about cinema as early as possible so they can learn step by step to have open minds, to analyze, criticize, be as free as possible. With this kind of people maybe truth would prevail and our everyday lives would be more meaningful. Yes Stuckmann transmits passion and makes people discover different kind of films but you can't be a good critic if you smile and say it is okay when Disney is teaching a whole generation to accept mediocrity, to be docile no brainers while cinema can be one of the best way to elevate people. He is closer to being a docile consumer than a critic. He is not the great teacher he could be for his younger audience. Maggie is not perfect on the form (too much restraint to make reviews 100% orgasmic) but she is exceptional because she spends a lot of time thinking, working and developping her talent so the content is amazing and perfectly structured. She is better than almost all of her "competitors" because her work is the result of a long process. She has become special. She is a real specialist. She can claim herself as a true critic. Stuckman is just a reviewer on youtube, a very sympathetic one, with qualities, but just a reviewer on youtube. Note : if you think the system works the best as it is with people only following trends and marketing laws etc, then alright, I admit my argumentation depends on an ideology you might no share!
i loved this review -- so thoughtful, well-articulated, and i appreciate your perspective. side note: where did you get all those books with the letters reversed? anyway, subscribed.
Just rewatched it. Amazing film. Almost a modern day fairytale, told in the way fairytales used to be told; no prettifying. Growing up the hard way. It reminded me, sadly I haven't seen anything this artfully visceral in a while. Some of the shots are just fantastic! It also made me think, why did I waste my time going to see 'Immaculate', recently?
so glad to hear you love this movie too! a few of my friends i went to see it with couldn't understand why i liked it and i thought it was such a deep and immersive film
funny you said you don't recommend eating afterwards because my friends decided not to finish their snacks and i was grateful to eat it for them. maybe i'm just a weirdo haha. definitely a film in my top 3 for best movies of the years so far.
I've seen the movie twice and both were pretty different experiences. The first time I saw it was at Fantastic Fest where it played like a pitch black comedy. It was still very intense and powerful, but people weren't afraid to laugh at the lighter parts. The second time was in a regular theater and people were not as amused haha. I'm curious as to how your viewing experience was? I loved the fact that it was able to tell such a powerful story in a way that was both shocking and darkly humorous, but I know people can love things for different reasons.
I saw it in a theater late at night with someone. There were probably only two other people in the entire theater, so I didn't get to really experience a true audience reaction.
I think one of the best things about this movie is that it's not a ... "traditional" horror movie. So you can enjoy it with or without that audience experience. My second time with the regular movie goers was actually a bit more stressful because I could tell they weren't ready for how "French" it was, hahaha.
Man Jim Williams really leaves such a mark on all his projects, the soundtrack was abit similar to A Field In England yet unique in its own way with Raw. Really has me curious for what he did in his second project with Julia Ducournau in Titane
Hey deepfocuslens! Love your reviews, was wondering if you've heard of the website, Letterboxd? It's pretty much a social network for film buffs, where you can follow critics, write reviews, log all of the films you have watched and make lists etc. It's a really cool and social place where you can discuss films with like-minded people and see what your friends are watching, I highly recommend it for anyone who is really into their films!
I read this whole movie as a story of a young woman who didn’t know what she exactly was and what her family members were. Not just cannibals but a slightly altered offshoot of humanity. Do her parents not insist she adhere to the vegetarianism in order to prevent her from changing physically and realizing her true nature? Are her rash, cravings, and behaviour not physically triggered by the original rabbit kidney? It’s one hell of a mental reaction otherwise. Her father’s shirtless body is a testament to her mother’s true nature. I thought it was all a nice metaphor for the normal parental feelings of parents not wanting their children to grow up and become fully realized adults but in this case it is a problem because they become feral killers when their meat levels drop once they initially indulge. Prion disease is a problem if you eat other people... I hear. Mad cow disease happens when cows ingest the brains of other cows or cow blood tainted with the disease so I just assumed this movie was going along those lines and the traditional cannibal families generationally progress to genetically become something slightly different, something relentless in their need to consume human flesh which starts from the first moment they eat meat of any species. Kind of why I thought they had her cough up fur balls more or less like a kitty cat or person with that disorder where they consume their own hair. I did not think the whole movie was mostly a dark metaphorical take on the coming of age thing like Carrie. If that is the case then she has a different family problem, they’re all mentally ill to the nth degree as is very well expressed by their car stalking behaviour... too me the metaphorical stuff is secondary and the need to feed creature like behaviour is um, primal? If the director said those things you mentioned questioning cannibalism’s acceptability then I would suggest two things: 1, she’s European, so take that with a grain of salt, and 2, she’s probably as good at marketing films as she is making them. I loved this film. It’s my second favourite horror film of the 2000s after the movie May. May, Raw, and Teeth make up a trilogy in my own head where the running theme is beautiful young women come of age and start chewing up their sex partners. Teeth involves vagina dentatis which sounds like a Police album... Don’t Stand So Close To Me... Teeth is a brutally dark comedy but basically is a story of a teenage girl becoming a woman who’s full of surprises. Teeth is not as great as May or Raw but it’s very good in its own right so I recommend it to anyone who could handle the masticating mayhem of Raw. Thanks for making videos. You rock.
You pronounced it very well ;) Otherwise very interesting and genuine review !! I'm surprised that this movie sparked off so many reactions (quite positives by the way) outside France. That's quite encouraging for this kind of movie :)
Great video! I love listening to your point of view after watching a movie, you're one of my favorite reviewers on youtube, for sure. I also caught on the nuance in writing/directing female characters that is much more prevalent among female filmmakers while watching the movie. I am usually not a fan of the grotesque/gory side of the horror genre, but I don't regret watching this one. It felt very purposeful, very focused on what it wanted to tell, and very well made in general.
I love the interviews with the director shes such a film nerd and the way she discusses real cannibals inspired me to watch that vice interview with the cannibal back in 2012 I believe
Hey, thanks for this review. I was a bit on the fence about whether I should go watch this, but when you said that this *felt* like a movie written by a woman, I knew I had to watch this. It is both boring and disappointing how the horror genre (and movies in general) lacks a diversity of non-white male voices, so adding more movies being made by 'the other' is always welcome. As a white(ish) male myself, art is one of the very few tools through which one can truly understand and empathize with the lived experience of those 'others' who are not the center of our cultural narratives. We've had some pretty great movies like this in last couple of years (Get Out, The Babadook and A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night being my personal favorites), but we still need more, so I'm quite glad to see another movie being added to that list.
Substitute alcohol for raw meat. It is about addiction. That is not about 'discovering yourself.' It is about madness. Anybody who has personally dealt with addiction would get that. I don't think the director/screenwriter got that. Anybody who thinks a drunk is discovering himself doesn't get it.
I see it from the standpoint of my own recovery, so I find it annoying. However, I don't think that the average addict recovers. Most adapt their lives around their addiction. The addiction in the movie made alcoholism look like child's play, so the girls seem pretty consumed by this. The mother has tried valiantly to recover and save her daughters, but she has had limited success herself. So, I take back my first comment. It actually is a good movie about the monstrousness of addiction.
This film is good but it doesn’t seem realistic in the slightest, nobody gets in trouble for anything. You’d think a security camera or something would see them doing mad stuff and kick them out of the vet school? I don’t like to nitpick but I couldn’t get that outta my mind the majority of the film
With your high praise, I'll definitely look out for this one. I'll see it one way or another - probably stream it, when available. It sounds deliciously demented.
I loved the movie and it was not disturbing! Movie is movie. We should see the movie from the third person perspective. No problem at all. No pressure on viewers at all. Masterpiece Body horror movie. After David Cronenberg genre. She is the best.
Very overrated and silly plot and not as shocking as it could have been. The original martyrs is superior and has many layers to it and is really extreme
Hey there deepfocuslens, this was a really awesome review and I enjoyed it a bunch, new subscriber now so keep those reviews a comin. If you happen to get 2 ticks Id really appropriate your thoughts on my channel, on how I could improve or grow it to the extent you've managed. Thanks again!!!
Glad you enjoyed it, and I'm all for disturbing movies, but something about A Serbian Film comes off as mean-spirited. For a week after watching it, I didn't even want to have sex... whatever that means. It definitely gets in your head, but I would never recommend it.
I've always wanted to try human. On practical grounds. There should be a legitimate, accepted way provided for whoever wants to pay. Even to sample different parts which may have varying flavor. If it all turns out to be way too gamey for the palate that would be good to know. Say in our lifetimes there is post apocalyptic chaos that deteriorates into, eventually, the only available protein being human. A scenario more likely now with The Donald at the helm. I have no idea how it tastes. I've stockpiled various steak sauces in case. It's ridiculous that I have to do that if it's not necessary. The money could be spent on stuff like extra-extra flashlights and cognac.........................I really enjoyed the movie although female cannibals is rather extreme for me personally. One of my deepest, darkest fantasies is to be killed by an attractive woman. But I could do without the feeding frenzy part..................I also implore any and all fellow responders not to engage in juvenile double entendre jokes about female cannibals. That's beneath even me, which is a sure sign it's way out of bounds.
