A Denver police internal affairs investigation into an allegation of inappropriate use-of-force during an incident in a Denver high school in April concluded that the officer did not act inappropriately, according to a conduct review report released to 9Wants to Know.
The complaint against the officer was first filed by Lucas Ketzer, the principal at RiseUp Community School.
On April 24 of this year, multiple Denver police officers arrived at RiseUp in search of a student who police believed shot at another person the night before in Lakewood, according to records provided by Denver police.
Upon entering the school, body camera video and police records obtained by 9NEWS show that officers spoke with a teacher and asked to speak to the student.
The principal then came down to speak with officers and told them the school’s policy is to inform students that police wished to speak with them, but if the student did not want to talk to officers, then the school would encourage the student to talk to officers later to take care of the issue, Denver police records show.
However, body camera video released to RiseUp reveals that police quickly interpreted the principal and other staff members’ actions as “uncooperative." At one point, an officer is heard referring to the principal as a “lib-tard.”
