I believe this Fairline Targa 65GTO will be perfect for a select number of you who truly enjoy the raw power and feedback that shaft diesels provide, but you also require a boat thats managable short handed for mixing it up around the a Harbour. This in my opinion is a perfect Sydney Harbour boat!

I like this Boat Dan But have little to no experience with a Boat this size. How long do you think it might take to teach someone to operate it?

It really depends on your experience on other boats. If you have zero experience driving something like this then you could either hire a captain for a few seasons and learn that way or start smaller and work your way up. The end result is so much fun operating a boat this size but you want to be doing it when you're ready and competent. You'll enjoy it more that way.

Unrelated to this boat, but do you think American sport fishing style center consoles have higher profit margins than other styles? So many sub 40ft boats that look like a carved out cantaloupe commanding north of $500k starting and I'm wondering where the money goes once they've made back the cash invested on fine tuning the hull in r&d.

Great question - I don't know the honest answer. Boat factories in general are very expensive operations to keep running with overheads that don't stop. Often you'll find the cost to build a small boat is similar to building a big boat due to the man hours involved and complexity. The Americans seem to favour the higher quality fixtures and fittings which will cost more plus if they are using Americans to build them this is also a cost when compared to building in SE Asia or China/Taiwan like most of the Australian builders now do due to the unstainable cost of labour here. When you factor in the R&D, cost of the moulds, all the parts and materials that go into the boat you are then talking about man hours which really does add up. These are not cars that are built by robots running down a line, boats are mostly crafted by people with lots of hands on work which at the end of the day costs lots of money.

No you misunderstood me Josh. We definately don't want to hit wildlife! It's a whale highway off Sydney at certain times of the year so we keep a good lookout because the consequences of hitting one on a small fast boat could be immediate. My point was it would be less severe on a big boat like that Fairline. But the goal is to never hit anything which is why we're always watching. Sometimes it's unavoidable, I have been on a racing yacht when a humbback surfaced in front of us and the guy on the main didn't ease in time for the skipper to bear away so we hit the whale. We apologised and as we were sailing it wasn't severe for us or the whale but a very real reminder of what can happen.
