Reliving The War takes an in-depth look at the WWF vs WCW "Monday Night War" era of pro wrestling. Week by week every episode of Raw and Nitro gets covered (including every match and every promo) to find out which show was really the best.
WCW presents a monumental episode of Nitro this week live from the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. It was announced earlier in the week that Goldberg would get a WCW Heavyweight Championship match on this week's episode of Nitro, but Hollywood Hogan wants to prevent that from happenig. Kevin Greene and The Giant meet inside the ring, the Chavo vs Eddie feud continues to heat up, and nWo Hollywood's Scott Hall returns to WCW.
On Raw The Undertaker is still determined to become number 1 contender for the WWF Championship and Mr. McMahon has an announcement regarding the title. We see more Brawl For All action with Brakus vs Savio Vega and Droz vs Road Warrior Hawk, and we also see a rivalry begin between Sable and Jacqueline as they confirm a bikini contest for Fully Loaded in a few weeks’ time.

Re-watching this episode made me realize 1998 was the best year of my life. I was finishing up 7th grade about to go into 8th. That summer was some of the most fun I ever had. Hanging out friends, just walking around the neighborhood seeing what kind of harmless mischief we could get into. What a fun time to be alive.

Not gonna lie, I had to check when Goldberg's streak ended. I was expecting a DQ or some other wild madness, but not a pretty clean win for Goldberg! (Yes, this is Almost 25 years old, but I don't know all matches or title changes of that time).

The only downside is that had WCW not been impatient, they could have set an all time PPV buy rate for the Hogan/Goldberg match... Instead, to counter WWF pulling ahead in the ratings they gave it for free, yes winning the ratings war that week, but ultimately starting them down the path of of losing the war.

@Kurt Paulsen Im hindsight, yeah it would have been better to do it at a PPV & get a good number out of it, but they wanted to counter Raw because the Austin vs Kane match drew a huge TV rating. So the Goldberg & Hogan match being given away on TV was an answer to that.

Same here. Mondays after ppv's were always crucial because i had to wait all day just to find out who won and who is the champion and who got screwed. My mom let me watch wrestling on cable, but wasnt paying for ppv. So the goldberg moment being available to see live when it happens meant so much.

@richspeck8932
@richspeck8932 Год назад
@@rdrouynriv I still don't think he concussed Bret with that kick and even if he did, it wasn't what ended Bret's career. Bret continuing to wrestle for months after with a concussion ended his career. Which is incredibly stupid when you have a guaranteed contract and can sit at home and still get paid, but I agree Goldberg was being a bitch over the chops. Whipping Hall into the ropes like that could have seriously injured him just because he chopped you hard in a wrestling match
@wonder-games3579
@wonder-games3579 Год назад
@@richspeck8932 He most definitely didn't wrestle for months. He had the match with Goldberg in December 1999 and had his last match weeks later in January. Also Bret's guranteed contract, still greatly deducted his pay due to him not wrestling and he eventually got released for it.
@richspeck8932
@richspeck8932 Год назад
@@wonder-games3579 Not true. Watch his shoot interview about it. Plus he was in the NWO 2000. And still doing house shows. And he would have lost zero money for sitting out hurt. Lanny Poffo didn't wrestle a single match for WCW and collected every penny of the contract he signed. Every wrestler that decided not to do the invasion angle got paid their full contracts to stay home. I don't know where you came up with that, but a guarantee is a guarantee.
@richspeck8932
@richspeck8932 Год назад
@@wonder-games3579 And even if I'm wrong about months, it's still quite stupid to continue wrestling for even one month when you know you have a concussion. He blames his stroke on Goldberg. Maybe it would never have happened if he didn't continue wrestling and took even a week off, but he didn't. That's on no one but him. And I'm a huge Bret Hart fan. I just don't think it's very professional, especially when you pride yourself on your professionalism, to publicly blame another professional every single chance you get for ending your career and giving you a stroke. Especially when he's pretty much the only guy I've ever heard talk that way about the guy. All anyone else ever says is he was a huge mark for himself. But if we're being honest so was Bret

Thank you. You made this special because it was a special moment. I watched it live in 98. I was a Hugh Goldberg fan back then.

Another awesome upload from the greatest wrestling channel on the planet. At this time I was watching Nitro weekly. Although in my head WWF was always the better product. I just didn’t have access to the channel for Raw. I was a huge 13 year old Goldberg mark. I remember this night. The issue was, in hindsight, the Goldberg VS Hogan match really should have been a PPV match. It happened on short notice for a one week ratings boost for nitro. Perhaps they should have had a slow burn for months. Until Starrcade. Then put the belt on Goldberg. To make up for the mess which happened the year prior. There was nowhere for Goldberg to go but down after this night. It was the peak of Goldberg and after this night WCW would start to go into a decline. What other fresh ideas did they have really?

Personally, for me Goldberg peaked vs DDP & His title run was pretty good until starrcade, had he beat Nash that night and kept the title a few more months this is a whole different conversation. The booking (Kevin Nash at this point) is what ruined Goldberg.

Great episode Mr Bios, clearly Nitro deserved the win but Raw had some all time memorable moments too (DX promo and Taker as Kane). Also I'd never seen the Chavo "Eddy trap" bit before but I thought that was so funny.

RTW is perhaps the best weekly show on YT right now and Im so appreciative of you Ryan for making me relive those fun days when I enjoyed wrestling to the max. Looking forward to Thursdays nowadays feels like looking forward to Monday nights back in the late 90s. Thank you and cannot wait to relive more memorable moments of the era

Your videos always bring a smile to my face because of the great memories that come flooding back. Wrestling really was something special back in the day. I miss how good it was but I’m just glad I was around to enjoy it when it happened. Thank you for the series and I look forward to many more ❤.

One of the greatest moments in WCW history and one of the funniest moments in WWF history happened on the same night. The Monday Night Wars were something else.

I remember this like it was yesterday. I don’t know if it’s been broken, but at the time, this was the largest audience ever to see a televised wrestling event on cable television. Great work as always! Thanks for doing this man 💯

The fact that Nitro went FULL hotshot this episode and Raw was still arguably as good says it all really.

To the person that suggested not using black face, you realize they were pretending to be black people right?!?!? It wasn't black face, it was imitation and it was hilarious. Get over your feelings being hurt, the WWF then had many black wrestlers under contract and they didn't play off any black stereotypes. It was a good promo and funny. People like you have ruined America.
