Nowadays, it seems that we know just about everything there is to know about our favorite celebrities. They are, after all, so open about almost every aspect of their life. But this wasn’t always the case. The stars of yesteryear often kept much of their lives private and often, they kept their darkest secrets to themselves. One such actor was Raymond Burr.

Raymond Burr was best known for his roles in the television series Perry Mason and Ironside. He also won acclaim for his villainous role in Alfred Hitchcock’s film Rear Window. One thing that was constant in many of his roles is that he played a character with tremendous authority - whether you rooted for him or against him.
Yet, behind the tough guy façade, Raymond Burr actually had a rather troubled life. In fact, Raymond Burr lived his secret life in excruciating pain. He was homosexual and as was the norm for many actors of his generation, he had to keep this a well-guarded secret. Any revelation of his sexuality, whether by himself or others would likely ruin his career.
But that wasn’t the only secret he had and behind the dignity and fortitude that his characters exemplified, he had to hide his vulnerabilities. On the outside, this didn’t seem like a problem. But on the inside having to live a secret life caused him to feel immense pain.
Yet he persisted and he also paved the way for many actors that came after him. His acting career and perhaps even his personal life can serve as an inspiration to anyone. FactsVerse is proud to bring you his biopic.
So how did Raymond Burr get his start in life? How did he become such a successful actor and what were the secrets he kept?

He was a fascinating man. And what is most known about him is the fact , that everyone loved him. His co actors who worked with him loved him and stayed friends with him through our his life even knowing he was gay. Not caring about even in a time when it was taboo to be gay . I loved him in his rolls he played. When I found out he was gay I was stunned, but when I found out how wonderful he was to everyone how he stayed faithful to his partner. I had nothing but respect. And still love and miss him. Told my wife he was one of my favorites . And me and my wife still watch his old perry mason shows.

I’m not sure how valid any argument for telling ‘tall tales’ is, particularly when it’s your profession to do that very thing on screen. It was also the very early years of television, which is totally different to theatre or stage acting - maybe he just did what most good actors, and *every* great comedian does almost 100% of the time - make up stories because his life wasn’t lived such that he could recount his many happy memories and anecdotes with male partners. I’m in my early to mid fifties - I’m 53 - but as a teen and young adult, I loved watching him Ironside, he was a brilliant actor. There was something about watching older black and white films and TV Series’ that seemed more professional than some modern rubbish. I’ve never known a time with so many channels with nothing additional to actually watch; and to watch repeats of shows made in the last 5 years on several channels simultaneously, with an hour between them, or in HD and standard, is absolutely infuriating - especially as we’re still obliged to pay the BBC for the pleasure of watching FREEVIEW or Virgin Media for example!! I miss a lot of B/W films - Westerns mostly, and we played Cowboys and Indians with our fellow British friends - can you imagine playing SEAL’s vs Taliban? Or even Marvel heroes against Terrorists? With IED’s and false beards? There’d be real casualties in the name of ‘innocent fun’ instead of living virtual and completely unrealistic games that bare no resemblance to reality whatsoever, entertaining as many are, they’re bad for social skills required for adult life - said my Dad 😂 “Space Invaders”? “Pac-Man”? and what on earth do you see in trying to get a frog across a bloody motorway? What was wrong with good old Pong? Or Skeet? Ahhhh, the good old days before ‘Footy in the park’ with lads you’d never met before. Sending kids to “Play outside, get some fresh air” is a punishment now compared to getting grounded and sent to bed early - their bedroom’s are like Holiday Amusement Arcades - better in most cases when they’ve got music going and lasers everywhere 😂

Remember in the 50s and 60s in the U.S., gay employees lost their jobs just on the suspicion of being gay. Even a co-worker could report their suspicion, and you lost your job. The fact you were not married was reason enough for your dismissal. Tens of thousands were fired for this reason for both private and governmental jobs. Burr would never have had these jobs in TV and Movies if he “came out”. But here is a fact that is more interesting. Most of the Perry Mason TV episodes had no juries. This was justified as that these were “pre-trial hearings”. The reasons for this were.. 1. It saved money and time in not casting actors for juries. 2. It gives more money to Raymond Burr. 3. The area for where the juries were situated were useful for excellent camera shots of the main characters.

At this day and age, many of us wont care - we will only look at his exceptional acting - a grand career But we need to understand that a basic livlihood would have been extremely difficult- acting or otherwise had he come out Imagine having to hide everything that u hold dear - the basic of whom you are I feel sad that anyone has to be so in hiding He used to show people are horrible for blackmail and he makes sure most things aboit him were hidden till hia death A legend indeed - I DONT CARE ABOUT HIS SEXUALITY

@@FactsVerse sorry, cannot recall a full episode as it was a long time ago but there was one where he encounters a former japanese officer who interrogated him during the war.

As a gay man myself and one who hid his sexuality from the 'public' for most of his adult life i can honestly say i was never in excruciating pain as a result of keeping it a secret .Where on earth do you dig up nonsensical comments like this?

Let us leave his private life aside. Was he a great actor or not.? HE WAS. I watch his films ,especially his role as Perry Mason. Great. Actors of that era had class, had style ,distinguished themselves. Sadly it is a different story today

Raymond Burr had too much character in the face to be a matinee idol. So I think his homosexuality wouldn't have been a career breaker at all, as long as his private life were an open secret. Such a condition could preclude a person from taking political stands, or championing gay rights.

I still watch Perry Mason and as far as Mr. Burr I pray that he made peace with God for how he lived his life, no judgement because we all have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God. Jesus Christ is the righteous judge, and He alone died for all the sins of mankind, Amen 🙏

Wow! I didn't know that Raymond Burr was gay he hid it so well I'm sure there are others that didn't know he was gay I'm sure I'm not the only one but then there probably are others that he just couldn't hide his secret from they knew but didn't want to jeopardize his career by saying anything I'm sure people were quite touchy about that kind of thing back then not like these days where it is more excepted and if he were alive today I'm sure he would be well excepted and could come out of the closet with it but I don't think it's ever going to be fully excepted by everybody cause some people just plan don't go for that kind of thing like myself for instance I can't say as I fully understand these kinds of feels I mean to be able to fall in love with the same sex as yourself I mean yeah love is love no matter who it is you fall in love with but anyway I think the majority of the people have excepted it but you're always going to have those that don't and I'm not necessarily saying that I don't per say, just that I don't understand these kind of feelings.
