Hi Scott, I am the anonymous Coloradoan! What a great presentation and I learned much more about the photos than just looking at random pictures from. my mother’s collection. My mom is Susan Simpson Anderson, granddaughter of W.B. Simpson and daughter of Richard M Simpson (late congressman). I am so happy to see this history in the hands of someone who can share with others!

My grandmother had a shared rural party line into the late 60s. Each of the parties would have their own ring pattern. You would have to wait for whoever was using the line to finish before you could dial your call. You could hear people pick up and sometimes listen in to be nosey or expedite your conversation. Thanks for sharing all the history stories.

Scott, excellent video, as always. It also touched my heart. I am a long time genealogist, it runs in my blood to help preserve not just people's names but also where and how they lived, worked, events of their time. Photographs, newspapers over a 100 years old in many cases, any documents. The search never ends. It's fantastic that someone has put items in your trust to be shared and not forgotten, lost or uncared for. Thank you to that person and you too Scott

The family are close friends of mine and I am just as much enthralled with their story as they are and only recently has information been coming forth regarding their previously lost history. So I keep helping them where I can and I cannot resist telling their story.

I have been to the Raystown dam many times as a child in the early 60’s fishing and picnicking With my grandparents who lived by the dam , I remember a lot of the roads and landmarks

It is beautiful and must have been even more grand when it was secreted away as the smaller lake.

I often wonder if for the better or worse. I lean toward "worse"... I believe this county should be a tourist trap of "Pennsylvania Jungle". Just nature and natural (not tree hugger style with paved asphalt paths, the real NATURAL of a dirt path that MAYBE is lined with naturally felled trees when needed).

Great video as always Scott. I appreciate all your hard work. What a pleasant surprise, all the things you received. Yes, I would love to see a video of a ride along of the beautiful sites. Thanks again, and keep up the Great Work!!!!

This video got me wondering about the rainfall & snow totals from that event. Here are some interesting facts that I found. Even though not all of these locations are in the Raystown Lake watershed it still gives a good idea that this area was very hard hit! Hyndman and Buffalo Mills had the highest daily rainfall totals for all of Pennsylvania on March 18th: 5.18" and 4.50" respectively. Bakers Summit and Bedford picked up just over 4.00". For snowfall totals for January 1 to March 18th, Bakers Summit had 64.8", Bedford had 53.0" and Hyndman picked up 29.9". 39.0" fell in Huntingdon. I'm not seeing snow depth records for any nearby locations.

Since that time there have also been the additions of dikes, dams, overflows, redirects, etc. to mitigate water flows. BUT... they seem to keep failing on a regular basis. 1844, 1889, 1936, 1972, 1996... meaning there should be another big one during the next 15 years.

The '36 flood happened just a month before my dad was born. His parents talked about it. In Williamsburg, floods are judged by the '36, '72, and '96 floods. My dad's family come from Woodcock Valley. Very much enjoyed this! Looking forward to more! BTW...this is OXBastetXO. I changed my name to reflect my Etsy shop name.

It would be neat to have pictures of all the parts of PA affected by that flood. It must have been astounding to see all the farm fields that became lakes.

The 1936 flood must be the flood my mom talked about. She lived in Mt Union and was almost 12 at that time (birthday March 22, 1923). She said Mt Union was flooded clear up to the PRR bridge.
@ODDySEEy
@ODDySEEy Год назад
Mt. Union would have been an absolute small island during that flood. All the way down to Virginia. The mountain range would have pretty much been the only visible signs of land.
