My everyday razor is a 40s Super Speed which my grandpa bought new. He used it until 1992 and I have used it since 1999. The perfect razor when loaded w Astra SP.

Rewatching this for the joy of collecting. I went down the Gillette rabbit hole: it started with the 1960s Slim Adjustable. Then there were 1959 Fatboys, the Next-Gen* Tech (ball-end), 1950s SuperSpeed (color-tips), and finally, the 1940s SuperSpeed. I even purchased a travel canister that was replated. TTO razors, especially with the notched centerpiece are reasons why I love Gillette. This truly was the best a man could get, known the world over. Even the commercials are something to behold. Props to you Matt for refurbishing these old razors and accoutrements. *nod to Star Trek

I’ve probably owned a dozen Super Speed razors and still have a nice hand full. When trying to get people into DE shaving, they are my go to handoff. Easy to use, generally mid range in aggressiveness, and they are a dime a dozen, probably their greatest attribute. Thanks as always Matt 👍🏻💈

This is what my grandfather used right up until he passed away. My uncle has it now. Growing up my grandpa was so poor he developed the ritual of stropping his de blade on his palm before and after use. I remember seeing him do it when i was young and thinking he was cleaning the blade off or something, my grandmother later told me he was honing it and could get triple the use out of the blade that way.

I have a Gillette Super Speed razor from 1949 that came with a plastic red case that, according to the date code information from Razor Emporium, the case was introduced in 1949 so I'm assuming that the razor is the original one that came with case and that both were manufactured in 1949. It also has a little fold out instruction booklet with it.

Yes, for my beard the Superspeed is the most comfortable for me! I hope you do additional videos on the different Superspeed models! The 1963 for example is my favorite and daily shaver! That’s when the head did change to a lower profile, and a little milder. Also the lower head makes it easier to shave under your nose! Oh boy do I enjoy a good morning shave the way my Dad used to! Thanks and have a great weekend!👍

Great video Matt as always. I purchased that exact complete set that you had in the cardboard box. I think it’s a nice set to have too. It was however missing the little cardboard horseshoe that held the handle, but had everything else. Mine doesn’t have the notched T-bar. Illustration on box lid actually shows you holding the blade by the ends to put it into the razor, classic. The packaging that Gillette use to use is what has always amazed me.

It makes sense they came out immediately after the war. I wonder if the barn doors were installed on the Bombay doors on an old bomber like the B-17. In this time period I could see that being the inspiration.

Bill, there is definitely a wow factor to the TTO vs the three piece razor. IIRC, the first TTO from Gillette was the open comb Aristocrat in the early 1930's. The first TTO solid bar for the masses was the 1941 Ranger Tech, I believe. Gillette really wanted to make it easy to change blades, so as to encourage the customer to do just that. The TTO design still has a wow factor even today; and so does the B-17 bomber. Amazing machines. WW2 really interrupted Gillette's plans for marketing the Ranger Tech. They made up for lost time in 1946 by redesigning and rebranding this as the Super Speed. The name is clearly a space age aspiration.

Hi Matt! Thanks once again for the informative vintage Gillette razor series videos. I have a nice 1948/49 Super Speed in the red polystyrene case with instructions and blue blades. It isn't in mint condition, so I use it. It delivers a better than average shave in terms of comfort and closeness. BBS longevity can be measure at 12 to 15 hours depending on the blade used. My biggest issue with mine is it tends to stick rather than glide on my face. I have checked the nickle place and it seems smooth and intact. A mystery to me as it is the only razor that does this.

You inspired me to do my own comparison. I compared my new rockwell 6 c with swiss blades to my gillette 3 blade cartridge. They were similarly as close but as you know the cartridges cost significantly more. This is my first DE. I hope to get the viking augustus for my birthday. I have an assortment of blades from amazon on the way to see if there is a difference in how blades affect my shave.

I suspect Gillette made the dispenser so people wouldn't cut themselves when loading a blade. Taking away that danger would increase sales.

There was also a black tip that seems to be like the original no-notch '41 SuperSpeed...is it out of order? Does it belong to the Blue, Red and Flare Tip? Why did the flare tip not have any color?

How do these compare against the edwin Jagger? I've seen some of these on Etsy for around $20.
@2010stoof
@2010stoof 3 года назад
Here is my understanding. 46-47 doesn't have notch on center. 48-49 1/2 has notch, but says "package" in inside blade tray. 49 1/2 - 50 has "pkg" inside the tray. Like he said in the video there are oddballs at beginning and end of years during change. 51-52 and even into 53 it's the "black tip" plastic TTO knob and started date codes in 51. That was the end of the 40s style. Next came the 50s style flare tips. (Silver, red, blue, but mostly silver) 70s style would be black aluminum handle. Each kind runs into it's subsequent decade i.e. 40s style ran into 50s, 50s flare ran into late 60s, etc.

Did Gillette produce the red plastic case beyond 1949? I’m asking because I just recently saw a video that shows a 1949 Gillette Super Speed razor with the red plastic case and the guy on the video says it’s a 1950 model.

Gillette was more or less acquired by valet autostrop in 1931. This is a major milestone in co history. Signaled the end of a lot of things from the original company.
