Wow, that 2 hours and $97 of getting the pieces together to build this was MUCH better than buying a dedicated knife sharpener that always has the perfect angle and fits in your knife drawer for $10. My $6 chef's knife (like the one in this video) is scratched as hell and is almost sharp now! Good tip, 12/10!
The next question would be: how long does the knife stay sharp, because the material structure is changed when sharpened hot (think of a high quality kitchen knife)... For this time and financial investment, you simply send the better knives by post to a professional!
@@stein-messerscharf I know. That's right. Your example only makes the absurdity of the idea of “sharpening” the way shown in the video more obvious. This is the instruction for damaging all knives, regardless of their price tags.
Doing so only harms the blade of the knife. Can be used for the roughest work, for severely dulled and damaged blades. The grit of the sandpaper should be in the range 600/1000
I wouldn't use that grinding wheel to do normal knife sharpening, it takes off too much material. Just use 1000 or 6000 grit waterstones. I do think it's useful if you have a badly damaged knife with many chips or if you want to change the geometry of a knife.
and right after you sharpen start cutting on a hard cutting board that instantly ruins your edge. people please dont post videos how to do something unless you know what your doing.
Oh... my... god! What has this innocent knife done to deserve such as treatment? And by that i mean both using stone as a cutting board and "sharpening" it with such an abusive method. No knife, as cheap as it can be, deserves such hatred.
@@user-kw3zw6fh7a You don't get a big pool of water using 1000 and 6000 grit waterstones. I just use a squeeze bottle and tray underneath to catch is the residue. I use to use oilstones and they were messy as hell. All this oily grit to clean up.
What you are doing in the second part is giving a knife the same cutting angle as say a razor knife or the snap off blades one. Using that angle and a small stone kept near the kitchen sink I can sharpen a dull utility or razor knife still in its holder at 10 degrees in a few seconds. I only bother to snap off the segment when the point gets so rounded it is not useful anymore. I think I will sharpen some cheap kitchen knives as you did at that angle and just dress em up before each use... things sharpened at that angle do not hold an edge but it is easy to dress em up... anyone can sharpen at those shallow angles.
Hey, that's the risk you have to take when you want a minimally sharp knife. Caveat emptor, my friend. At least he didn't glue it to anything this time. I'd call that progress! 😜
if you place back to back the 2 disks one will face the grinder rotattion and the other the oposit direction and it is extremly dangerus to engage the blade of the nife
I've been using a small belt sander (28") from HArbor Freight with similar grit 80, 100, 120, series for knives that are in poor shape then for fine work 800 -1,000 Not a handyman
